A large crowd came out to protest the Alberta governments cuts to the disabled and seniors programs, privatization of care, and layoffs of public servants. The audience waited to hear addresses by Glen Scott, Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) vice president; Jason Hale, MLA; Mark Sandilands from the NDP party; and Val Rappel from the Happy Gang. In 2009, the provincial government promised Strathmore 35 long term care beds and an expansion to the existing hospital. Guess whatit broke its promise. Instead, it announced it would close the 23 long term beds that would provide excellent care, seamless treatment and an opportunity to for seniors to spend their last days in their community, said Scott. He commented that the vacated hospital rooms will be sitting empty. He condemned the government for giving close to $21 million to private for-profit healthcare operators, with a less than perfect care record, making money off the oldest and most vulnerable in the community. He said it has also cost 60 residents employment. Those employees were locals who live and contribute to the Strathmore economy. Now seniors have become a commodity and the demand for a bed will be based on the market, which is very high due to many years of under- funding. We have to keep sending the message to the government that Strathmore seniors are not for sale. Strathmore will not allow this government to use it as a testing ground for private forprofit long term care, said Scott. He is encouraged by the numbers of people that have been out to support that message, and said that continued pressure will cause government to re-evaluate its decision on this. He said this issue, in this community, is where the line in the sand is drawn. Standing our ground will deter similar situations happening in other communities. Jason Hale said he is working hard by bringing up constituent concerns in parliament. He thinks that regulations in seniors accommodations under private care need to be tightened to improve protection for seniors. He said we need to hold the government accountable for what happens in the private facilities. Continued on Page 2

At 3:30 a.m. on June 5, robbers stole a truck in Langdon and drove to Carseland, where they used the vehicle to smash through the front door of the Carseland liquor store. Owner Sam Pyo said he saw the incident on the news, prior to opening shop the next morning. He has been a business owner in Carseland for over 15 years. Pyo said he felt so bad for the person who owned the truck. Its just sickening, said Pyo. The thieves took ten bottles of vodka and the float that was in the till. He said that he has insurance that will cover the damages, but he will be out the $1,000 deductible. He expects repairs will take several weeks to complete, but he is keeping the store open for business. Pyo said residents told him they heard two vehicles racing shortly before the break-in and reported one man wearing a mask. The vehicle was abandoned east of Carseland on the highway. Residents from Carseland called the RCMP and said they responded by 5:30 a.m. RCMP requested a statement from Pyo and they are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information on the break-in can call Strathmore RCMP at 403 934-3968.

Fine Arts night recognizes talented, artistic students

Johnson is currently one of the Final 3 in the MuchMusic Coca Cola Covers Competition. Another talented student is celebrating her first novel I Didnt Know that was published just after Christmas this year. Danielle Hauck received the Grade 9 Creative Writing Award for all the hard work she spent this year finishing her novel.

The rally held in Kinsman park on June 8 drew a large crowd of supporters angry at cuts to programs made to social service programs and eliminating jobs. Left: Jason Hale hears stories of maltreatment of elders and concerns for lack of regulations. Right: Picketers want to work in Strathmore.

Government cuts seniors programs

Continued from Page 1 To ensure wherever you are at, you are going to get top notch care. Our seniors deserve nothing less. The reason we have this beautiful province is because of the hard work our seniors have done, today and yesterday. We take a lot for granted. Many soldiers died in the war for our freedom, so we could have this great country and great province. If you are shuffling your seniors off, so you dont have to look after them anymore, that is totally wrong, said Hale. He said there is money that can be redistributed to supply these needs. He commented on $250 million dollars the government is spending for a rooftop gardens that in the Conservative MLA office building and increases of eight per cent in wages. He said he needs the community behind him, to fight for what is right. Sandilands said that the public healthcare system has been undermined for years. He said conservatives are pushing the Lethbridge model, which revolves around closures and privatization. He said that designated assisted living do not have adequate standards and regulations. He said there is an ongoing record of broken promises. They broke these promises, so they dont have to tax millionaires, oil companies and large corporations said Sandilands. He said that with just a two per cent increase in taxes 11 billion dollars could be raised. He supported union organizations and reminded the audience that the working conditions we enjoy are due to efforts of unionized

organizations. He said the government places financial recording conditions on the unions, but dont require them for themselves. Val Rappel said the Happy Gang has 128 members. She has lived in metropolitan and rural communities. She moved here because of its proximity to a hospital and the quality of life in Strathmore. She is dismayed at the ambulance service changes, closure at the hospital, and people losing jobs, and it inspired her to get a petition going against these measures. We have to fight back my friend. I am not sick right now. I dont need a hospital, but I want to be able to go in a hospital that will look after me, not a care facility that has no regulations to tell it they have to have nurses at hand, said Rappel. She said we need to ask ourselves some hard questions about the healthcare decisions being made in this community and consider what will happen in the future, being we are so close to a major city. Town Councillors Dave Hamilton and Rocky Blokland lent their support to the message. County Councillor Don Vander Velde was also at the demonstration. Hamilton said that the time for talk was over and it was the time for action. Many people took action by signing petitions, set out for everyone to sign, and promising to send letters to Premier Redford, which can be accessed at www. strathmoreseniors.com. Scott said that protests will continue well into October. Local news staff and television media were on site.

Meeting contains a fiery debate

Leanna (Biggar) Simon & Concerned Citizens of Carseland Politics, passionate views of community members, past disagreements and unresolved financial problems, all came to a head on the night of June 6, at the Carseland Community Hall. Carseland and area residents, Carseland community organizations, County of Wheatland officials and Strathmore Rural Fire Fighters Association (SRFFA) representatives gathered to discuss recent changes affecting the Carseland Fire Department. Rumours, concerns and hurt feelings had been circulating the hamlet, explains Jackie Ferraton, President of the Carseland Public Benefit Club. In the recent weeks, SRFFA suspended Fire Chief Curt Emde, Fire Deputy Chief Ryan Hauswirth, Officer Rodney Dunsbergen and one other fire officer. SRFFA also removed Carseland Fire Departments emergency response truck from Carseland and moved it to the Strathmore Rural Fire Hall, a vehicle that the Public Benefit Club and other Carseland organizations had raised over $16,000 to purchase. We were not only disturbed by these series of events, said Ferraton, we were also worried about the functionality our hall and the safety of Carseland and the surrounding area. The community meeting, attended by about 150 residents, opened with speeches showing huge support for Carseland Fire Department from local residents, businesses and associations. Attendees were advised that there is no intention now or at any time to close the Carseland Fire Hall and that Carseland has a mutual aid agreement with other halls in case of a major event. Wheatland County and SRFFA representatives reassured Carseland residents that the fire hall is still in service under the interim fire chief. Community members also gained insight into the decision to suspend several of the Carseland fire fighters on May 29th, and learned that the members had been suspended because they had failed to report an alleged incident to the SRFFA board. Emde, Hauswirth, and Dunsbergen were asked questions by community members at the meeting, and said that the first time they were informed of the incident was when they were given their suspension papers. The men held exceptions to the incident reporting and the way the suspension process was handled. SRFFA president, Bruce Rande questioned their response to the incident. Both parties seemed to have gaps of communication with each other and unanswered questions. Questions were put to Rande by community members, but not clarified, leaving people feeling frustrated. Moving forward, community members wanted to know if the suspensions were permanent. Rande reassured community members that it was not permanent and that the men could be reinstated if they fulfilled the terms indicated on their suspension forms, and the board unanimously voted them back. Rande also explained that any equipment used by the Carseland Fire Department, including the emergency response truck, is property of the SRFFA. Rande stated that the truck had been moved for insurance purposes and had to be stored within a structure. However, unsettled residents were unable to receive clear answers whether or not the emergency response truck was being stored properly at the Strathmore Rural Fire Hall, or what plans SRFFA has for the vehicle. Various community members had tough questions for the County, about whether or not Wheatland County could intervene in the SRFFA, to help resolve some issues, or if the County could implement a completely separate Association for the Carseland Fire Department. Reeve Glen Koester, of Wheatland County Council, as well as Carseland area representative Councilor Donald Vander Velde clarified that the fire associations within the County are contracted and they manage and govern their own Association. Therefore, the County could not interfere with decisions made by fire association boards. Reeve Koester, also informed residents that Wheatland County has begun a review process of all fire associations within the county and that Council would not consider if a split was feasible, until theyve received all recommendations from the review committee. When community members were asked whether they desired a separate association there was an overwhelming majority of hands raised in favour of the action. With the meeting heating up fast, Chair Rita Kruger, Carseland Ag Society President calmly drew discussions to a close. Community members left the meeting with mixed feelings. Some uncertainty had been cleared up, but there were still many questions left unanswered. We can be upset, we can be outraged, and we can be frustrated, but our fire hall is not at risk of closing, confirmed Kruger. Kruger encouraged concerned community members that if they still had questions about the emergency response truck, the suspension of the fire fighters, or any other SRFFA related issues that they should attend the SRFFA public meetings. She also stated that the Carseland Ag Society will be accepting letters from community members to be handed over to the fire association review committee. Strathmore Rural Fire Fighters Association public meetings are held on the last Monday of the month, at the SRFFA hall in Strathmore, with the next meeting scheduled for June 24th at 7:30pm. To attend the meeting a person must notify the board 10 days prior. Letters regarding the fire fighting service in the Carseland area can be sent to president@carselandalberta.ca or they can be mailed to Box 187 Carseland, AB T0J 0M0.

Tour of Alberta
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The Tour of Alberta Festival gained $31,500 from Town Council, taken from the Stabilization Fund. A budget was provided to council regarding where the funds would be spent. The largest amounts were for policing, road signage, washrooms and festival expenses. This is going to be a remarkable event. It is an international event and we will have more press looking at Strathmore than ever before, said Councillor Bob Sobol. The event will have 140 elite cyclists competing, and all Council considered the investment provided by the Town will be multiplied by the number of tourist dollars and advertising it will generate for businesses in the town. Eight media outlets will be giving coverage. There is a documentary being filmed on the Town and the race. Organizers indicated that bookings for one of the motels in town, the weekend before the beginning of the event, have been valued at a $10,000 increase over normal bookings. Organizers say that up to 100,000 people have attended the event in the U.S. No comment was made by council on how the town would handle an influx of that many people, or if we have the restaurant or overnight facilities to accommodate that many people at once. To sit or not to sit Council reduced attendance to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to one councillor and the mayor, at their own discreation. I didnt find it very productive whatsoever, said Mayor Grajcyzk. I dont want Council to force me to go. It was debated that it was a way to network with other municipalities, but others believed it would be more economical to network electronically, or through information gathered from other media. Many felt the FCM content was geared to larger cities. Councillor Best disagreed and voted against the motion. Councillor Bob Sobol felt that they should have representation on the Calgary Regional Partnership Transportation Committee. He felt that it was a way for Strathmore to have a voice at the table. There is a direction they are going that will see CRP purchase the capital items for the Regional Transportation Committee. If we are not at the table, those buses certainly wont be coming to the table, said Sobol. The mayor said that he didnt think buses were needed in Strathmore, until 10 years down the road. He doubted how Strathmores transportation needs would work into the CRP plan. He said operation costs for a bus system are out of this world. He feared if we sit at the table, it will signal we are committed to developing a bus system. However, Council voted five for and two against, ensuring Sobols continued participation. Godsmans book goes to Council A copy of John Godsmans book called Remembering our Roots was given to Strathmore Town Council on June 5. Earlier this year I approached the Town of Strathmore and asked them if they would be interested in donating funds for a book commemorating our roots. Today, I would like to present you with this complementary copy, said Godsman. Godsmans book is a compilation of historical stories from Strathmore and the surrounding areas. Godsman is an active writer in the Strathmore community. Readers can find his current articles in The Strathmore Times. After the presentation, he was off to a local book reading. Fortis holds Town electric service Council agreed to retention of Fortis as energy provider for the town, for another 20 years. The decision is really a formality as there is currently only one provider available. Council had previouly speculated that the future might open new suppliers and types of energy production. They asked adminstration staff to look into the ramifications of getting out of the contract if needed. Administration indicated they would have to have a material breach or default on the contract, or the town could purchase the distribution system from Fortis. However, they felt service had been good and there will be no need to default. There were concerns that developers who place electric structures in place, turn them over to Fortis for free, once the developments houses are sold. However, to date there was no other mechanism to deal with the practise, unless the Town becomes the provider. A letter was signed and sent to Alberta Utilities Commission about Councils intent to sign the contract and have AUC advertise the intention to sign the franchise agreement. Coalition signs storm management contract A Cooperative Storm Management Initiative of the Regional Collaboration Program was agreed to by Town Council. The County of Rockyview is submitting an application for a grant and the Town will be partners and abide by the terms of the grant process. Previously Council had proposed we continue our participation in a cooperative storm water management initiative and part of that is a partners application for the Regional Colaboration Grant, said Jesse Parker, Town The grant is for $250,000 and will be used for a regional storm water program. Sub-system drainage goes into Eagle Lake and Serviceberry Creek, utilizing in part the WID drainage ditches and their equipment and crews for some of the work. Partners include WID, City of Calgary, Chestermere, Rocky View County, Strathmore and Wheatland County. It is anticpated to save millions of dollars and be more effective than having each partner establish their own program. Municipal reserve kept Council agreed that the strip of land along Centre Street, between Kinsman park and the Ranchwood modular home park will be kept as Municipal Reserve and set July 3 as the date for a Public Hearing on the matter.

Daddy and me time

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Several fathers and their children enjoyed making a spring kite together at the Hand in Hand Parent Link centre on June 7. Aspen Social Services offers the Hand in Hand Parent Link program in Strathmore, to provide support to parents in their role as their childs first and most influential teacher. Rhonda Rhys-Doering said that a fathers role with their child is very important. A childs bond with their father establishes healthy behaviour, said Rhys-Doering said. Some of the research regarding fathers and their babies indicate babies learn their fathers image and smell

early on. They equate those to a time for play and interaction. Those playful interactions help the baby develop good brain activity. Fathers are also good role models for children teaching them self-confidence, taking initiative, humour, and taking safe risks. Healthy father-child bonds decrease acting out in later life and discourage teen pregnancies. Both parents provide protection and provision, but children often equate it as a male role. Hand in Hand Parent Link has a lot of educational resources for parents. They often collaborate with other community agencies and professionals to provide referrals and interesting programming. The centre is located on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Second Street in Strathmore and it is kid friendly, but all generations will enjoy the interesting activities offered through ongoing programming throughout the month. There are programs for new parents, toddlers and preschool children. Many of the activities will prepare children for kindergarten or play school activities. All activities are free of charge.

To register for activities call 403-9830076. The fathers present on June 7 said they really enjoyed coming to the centre with their children. One dad said it gave his wife a welcome break. Another father said that sometimes single or divorced fathers dont have toys or spaces that they can play with their children, so Hand in Hand Parent Link is the perfect place to come to play. Rhys-Doering said that the centre has also provides a place for supervised visits for families involved in custody issues. Play at the centre is so much fun, it sometimes spills outdoors. There is engagement with people of all ages in the Walk and Roll program, which meets at the sign for Kinsmen Park on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. Leonor said that interaction of the children with each other and community members improves their socialization skills. Anyone can check programs out on the Town of Strathmore website www. townofstrathmore.com and get more information about the agency at www. plcstrathmore@aspenfamily.org.

Sharing history with our future

Strathmores history book writer, Paul Sonsteby, was at Westmount on May 29, to speak with the Grade 1 students about the Town. Sonsteby wrote 100 Years of Memories in 2011, in commemoration of the Towns 100th birthday. Sonsteby showed the students photos and spoke to them about changes the Town has seen.

Just a reminder that during the summer days and youre spending the day outdoors, even when its cloudy, still apply sunscreen. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun cant be seen or felt and has nothing to do with temperature but still can burn even on cloudy days. Heart disease is 8 times more deadly than breast cancer and it kills more women each year than all cancers combined. Sometimes, the symptoms of a heart attack in women are different from men. There may be shortness of breath, sweating, unusual fatigue and may include chest pain. Waste no time calling 911 if these symptoms are happening to you. Brittle or cracking finger nails is often due to loss of moisture in the nails. A clear nail polish can help reduce moisture loss even for men. Historically, people used to take gelatin capsules for this problem but it doesnt really work. Gelatin contains protein but it doesnt contain the two amino acids, lysine and tryptophan, two important building blocks to making protein. Food protein sources are best. Swimmers ear is an inflammation of the outer ear canal caused by prolonged wetness of the area during swimming. Symptoms include pain, itching and a feeling of fullness. A home remedy you might keep on hand is a mixture of equal parts rubbing alcohol and vinegar. Instill a few drops into the ears after swimming and it helps to dry out the area. Auctioneers competition
Kim Proust Calgary Stockyards Last Friday, June 7, the Calgary Stockyards & Team Auction hosted the 2013 LMAC auctioneer Canadian championships. We had 20 talented auctioneers from all over Canada compete in our event including two auctioneers from the Calgary Stockyards. Each auctioneer sold eight lots of cattle in the first round. When the first round was done the top 10 were selected including our very own Cliff Pahl. In the final round each auctioneer sold seven lots of cattle and one black box item. Saturday night there was a banquet honouring the auctioneers and announcing Travis Rogers of Westlock the winner of this years competition. We are very proud to announce that Cliff placed second. We would also like to thank The Town of Strathmore, Strathmore Golf Coarse, Strathmore UFA, Harry Turner (Western Connections), Elite Transport and The Road House Restaurant all from Strathmore for your very generous donation to our black box items.

Protesting cuts to programs

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland seniors and disabled citizens are under attack, while saved tax dollars are being put in the pockets of private companies. A great gulf has been opened between mans material advance and his social and moral progress, a gulf in which he may one day be lost, if it is not closed or narrowed, said Lester B. Pearson, who implemented universal healthcare in Canada, during his time as Prime Minister. The Alberta government is enlarging the moral and social gulf, by placing a material value to health care dollars saved through washing its hands of responsibility, and passing our vulnerable citizens off to private businesses. If private providers raise their fees, charge for service, employ inadequate help, cut staff hours and services, the government, like Pontius Pilate, will wash its hands and issue press releases stating government doesnt dictate terms to private business. Seniors needing chronic care are being moved from the hospital to Sagewood. This week, home care providers were cut to 10 agencies province wide. By July 31, the private company Bayshore Home Health will be running Wheatland Lodge and home care services in Wheatland County, again displacing workers and unsettling clients. Extensive cuts were also made to programs helping the disabled. This PC government continues to show how out of touch it is with the priorities of patients and everyday Alberta families, said Heather Forsyth, Health Critic for Wildrose. Wheatland residents confirm Forsyths allegation. Ongoing pickets on the streets of Strathmore over the last month, by health care staff and concerned citizens, were wake-up calls about unjust government. A protest advocating a stop to health cuts, support for the disabled, support for seniors and displaced medical staff was held in Kinsman Park on June 8. MLA Jason Hale, Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Vice President Glen Scott, local politicians and seniors representatives joined over 100 supporters in the rally. The Canadian Charter for Human Rights prohibits discrimination on the basis of age and disability. If pickets, letters and rallies dont work, votes will. Until election, perhaps it is time that taxpayers placed their taxes in a holding account, released when the Alberta Conservative government admits these program cuts are discriminatory and endanger health. Hold the funds, until they restore programs and transparently account for all the retracted or reallocated dollars. In the 90s, when the Alberta government tried to implement user fees and extra billing for medical supplies and services, citizen outcry forced the Federal government to step in to stop the erosion of health care. The Federal government withheld Canadian Health Transfer (CHT) dollars. The Alberta Government divesting health care to private providers is another run around tactic, to achieve what they set out to do the in the 90s. Under the CHT program and the Canada Health Act, it is stated that continued access to quality health care without financial or other barriers are critical to maintaining and improving the health and well-being of Canadians. The primary objective is to protect, promote and restore the physical and mental well-being of residents of Canada and to facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers. Mapleleafweb: The Canada Health Act: Provisions & Administration Another provision in the CHT is that insurance plans must provide for reasonable access to insured services on uniform terms and conditions, unprecluded, unimpeded, either directly or indirectly, by charges (user charges or extra-billing) or other means (age, health status or financial circumstances). Will private providers provide care to those without adequate insurance? Will seniors or disabled be getting the same care as other citizens? The Alberta government is no longer the healthcare provider when they have passed clients into private hands, and so are they technically even entitled to CHT taxpayer dollars? This step is the first in the ultimate decline of health care provision. Before universal healthcare started, Malcolm Taylor wrote that most Canadians daily faced potential catastrophic physical and financial consequences of unpredictable illness, accident, and disability, and any providers unwilling to deny needed care for those who needed it had growing bad debts. Universal healthcare is woven into the fabric of Alberta and Canadian society. We are known throughout the world for our concern for our fellow man. When we cease to care for one another, society will cease to care about us. Alberta government officials need to look at cutting their own material comforts, reawaken their moral and social values and walk a mile in these peoples shoes. No one gave these seniors a profitable retirement bundle that will supply all their retirement needs, but seniors and all Alberta taxpayers does give that to government officials and more. Albertans expect their elected officials to find a way to provide for and honour the citizens that built this province. Through many years of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, they have earned the right for exceptional, not just adequate and definitely not inadequate, healthcare. We need to make them listen or their hardships will be our own.

tail about what we went through with basically no help, but I worked, went to school and two years later almost had myself together by myself, a feat I am very proud of. I ended up in an abusive relationship and just recently I was able to get out and come home to Calgary. The only place available was at a friends, where my daughter and I shared a room. My son stayed with my mother until just recently I have gotten our own place. Well again I am renting room and board and so its not quite our own but we are together. This was the first time I had to beg to receive assistance as they do not provide help to someone who moves from a different province with no secured employment. I had only asked for the 4-6 weeks to help until my medication had time to balance out. Well I was cut off in four weeks with no way to even get more medication. Without my medication I am unable to even leave my house. I have serious social anxiety and severe post-traumatic stress due to the fire and other unfortunate life experiences. I have been begging and pleading with welfare since and was told as soon as I found full time employment they would help me. Still I am confused with that thought process for if I had full time employment I would not need assistance nor would I qualify. I have obtained part time employment with an opportunity for full time and only because I had worked there before. In a small town right now there is no other full time employment available for someone with my limited mental capacity and honestly horrible teeth. Both of which assistance could help me with and have me be a productive member of society instead of a very hard working, single mother who wakes up every morning hoping the struggles a lil less that day. As of now I have been given benefits for my medication only. Once again I have had to be off and now back on my meds causing even more anxiety, to the point of hospitalization. As it stands Im a mess and so close to just giving up all hope. Again I am a single mother putting herself and her children threw school, working part time and living daily with mental health issues so extreme theyre disabling. Here I am fighting not for assistance anymore but for my dignity. My name is not Joe. Jennifer Hellstrom Standard

Injustice in the welfare system

To the Editor I have a story that needs to be shared, more so an injustice. We live in a province where welfare aka assistance is handed out to any Joe who has a friend to write a rent report. Where Joe knows a guy who owns a company and so with a business card can again receive assistance for work equipment. This Joe that I know received $2,000 for work equipment he doesnt have a job for and another $500 for rent he doesnt pay. My names Jen and I have a job. I dont get assistance for any work equipment because it is part time job. Moreover, I have rent to pay and food to buy for my children. Yet Im honest and so Im told to use the food bank, which barely covers necessities for more than a week, and to plead with family members for help. Now sure I could go out and find full time employment and not need assistance. Isnt that what everyone receiving assistance wishes for? Unfortunately no; hence why now a single mother with two children has to fight for every ounce to get help. Degrade herself to begging with tears for 4-6 weeks of assistance. Yes! Originally that is all I had asked for. And again they argue just get a job. If it were truly that easy I would be on it. Im going to share part of how I ended up in this situation, not for sympathy more importantly for understanding. Two years ago my two children and I lost everything including our pets and nearly my daughter to a house fire. At the time I worked for a friends dog kennel, which was supported by her husbands rebar company. The morning she called from out of town to tell of the closing and falling apart of the business was the morning of the fire. So when I say we were left with nothing it isnt an exaggeration. The RCMP, in Quesnel B.C., who came out to the fire expressed concern and mentioned Victim Services as they would provide assistance to help get back on my feet. Now because of the towns high rate of marijuana grow ops, the RCMP officer in Victims Services took three weeks to reply with an Im sorry theres nothing we can do. My house was definitely not a grow op. On the property were two houses, which originally were a part of a bible camp; put together by volunteers and not up to code. The main houses electrical had been updated. Mine was next. Im not going to go into de-

Senate reform
Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Many of you have contacted me following the Senate travel and expenses scandal involving four Senators, three from our Conservative Caucus. I am very disappointed by these revelations. This looks like the culture of entitlement that we have been fighting against in successive elections. I have consistently stood for accountability and safeguarding taxpayer funds, as has our Conservative Party. Going forward, as your Member of Parliament, I can assure you that our Conservative government will hold all senators to account. Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed the National Caucus saying, we have worked hard, collectively as a party, as a caucus, and as a government, to dramatically strengthen accountability rules in Ottawa and to apply those standards to ourselves. I need not remind you, that in 2006, this government was first elected to clean up the Liberal sponsorship scandal, to ensure the rules are followed and to ensure there are consequences when they are not. Our Federal Accountability Act, the toughest accountability legislation in the history of this country, forever changed the way business is done in Ottawa. We have: strengthened the powers of the Auditor General; toughened the office of the Ethics Commissioner; reformed political party financing; dramatically tightened lobbying rules; and, beefed up auditing and accountability within government departments. The Hon. Marjory LeBreton, Leader of the Government in the Senate announced tough new rules governing Senate travel and expenses proposed by Conservative Senators. Forty-eight hours after unveiling them, on May 28 they were adopted by the Senate of Canada. Included in the 11 new measures, we will: remove the presumption that a senator acts honorably with respect to expenses; clarify residency expense claims; require specific purposes for travel when claiming expenses; require mileage logs; mandatory taxi receipts; restrict per diems; reduce the travel-point system; restrict a Senators designated traveler to a spouse or partner; require monthly reports on travel patterns; amend travel categories; and, limit international travel. Our Conservative Government has been working on Senate reform since 2007 and has consistently introduced legislation to change the Senate. On Feb. 1, we launched a reference on Senate reform to the Supreme Court of Canada. We look forward to receiving the Supreme Courts opinion on what specifically is required to reform the Senate and what is required to abolish the Senate. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are now investigating and Senator LeBreton is calling for the Auditor General of Canada to conduct a comprehensive audit of Senate expenses. Our Conservative government will continue to advocate for and push for Senate reform. We will continue to protect taxpayers from abuses of public trust. New staff at Strathmore RCMP

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly gave a service update to Town council on June 5 including the introduction of two new graduates from RCMP depot, Cst. Erin Peters and Cst. Adam Arendas. Mayor and council, thanks for inviting us and I wanted to say thanks for being given the opportunity to work with council, the Mayor and Town Administration in the future as the new detachment commander. I look forward to the new opportunity and challenges, said Reilly. He presented a summary of initiatives taken concerning traffic on Hwy 1. A meeting was held with the Mayor, CAO, traffic unit, sheriffs and Reilly, to discuss the problem and develop a set of initiatives to address them. Reilly said he has encouraged officers for the last several months to monitor the roadway. Regular patrols spent one to two hours sessions at different times of day issuing tickets for infractions. There were 75 violations tickets written, four warning tickets, one suspended driver which led to the seizure of his 18 wheel cattle liner, one vehicle seized for lack of insurance, and one red light violation. They also monitor speed violations. We have got some good feedback from people in the community and the Town management team. They have seen us out there more and we have gotten a lot of help from integrated traffic and sheriffs, said Reilly. Drug complaints since January 15 were 17 complaints, five charges and five investigations are ongoing. The detachment is putting on an open house on June 15, a project that has been in the works for several years. He has invited people from the town and rural areas, contacted the schools and invites everyone to attend. There will be many exciting activities on display and the Mayor and Jason Hale will attend.

Borrowed tree clippers

To the Editor On Saturday, June 7, we were doing our yard work. One of the tasks included trimming some low-hanging branches from the tree in our open front yard. We try to be good citizens and those branches might brush against a pedestrian walking by. The clippers we use were a gift from a dear friend and are especially nice. They have a great length so we can tackle the older trees in our yard and are just the right weight, length and the edges are sharp. We use them a lot. Someone stepped onto our lawn and borrowed our clippers where they were left by the tree. We have trees that need trimming in the back yard so you can imagine our dismay when we found the clippers had disappeared within a few minutes of setting them down. Please bring them back when you are finished trimming your trees. You can leave them by the tree and there will be no questions asked. Thanks. Heather Roberts, Strathmore

Marriage un-advice (for the ladies!)

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Recently, my daughter and her friend raced (and beat) me to my Man Cave! Ive already mentioned this on Facebook, and my pals gave me a lot of ideas on what to do next time it happens. I know, I know, youre thinking about the race between me and the younger gals and youre right, it wasnt pretty! I was cleanly beaten. I did try to reason, and I thought I was gaining ground until Breanne said: you can stay Dad, watch Magic Mike with us! The thought of watching a whole movie about male strippers with my daughter was way too creepy. They even started painting their nails in there right in front of my bar and my 6-foot Elvis cut-out! Was nothing sacred anymore?! Ive raised a devious person, I thought. This also got me thinking of offering more bad advice for relationships, only this time for the wives/girlfriends. So, hopefully if you pay attention ladies, these steps may be of help. Remember, like the too small labels on any deadly pills we have, read carefully! 1.) Tell your guy everything about your day. Thats right, we guys like nothing more than to be filled in on every little detail about what happened, who did what, who said what, and we really want to know about your feelings! This makes us feel like were with you for almost the whole day, and that daily epic story will bring us closer together! 2.) After the story of your day, dont let us try and help. Thats right, if youre going through so much strife, and youve told us this, we know that youre not looking for any solution, or an easy fix for a problem you just want to be held. We already know that the really long detail-filled story doesnt need an easy solution, we just wanted you to know we were listening to the whole story! 3.) Tell us constantly what to wear. We know we have no possible way of dressing ourselves, and we really need that constant feedback to keep us on the right track. I think our favourite comment at a time like this is: youre not going to wear that, are you? Not only have you helped us with our wardrobe, youve taught us an important lesson on sarcasm, and we love to learn! 4.) While getting ready to go out, take as much time as you need. Weve heard the Brad Paisley song, and we LOVE waitin on our woman, especially if theres a set time to be somewhere. Wed much rather have you try on many outfits so that our trip to a darkened pub has just the right amount of style! 5.) Take just as much time to say your goodbyes when were ready to go home. We know how important it is to nurture friendships, so if you need to stop and say hello or goodbye to each table in the pub, well, thats just fine. This helps us widen our circle of friendships, and thats way more important than the overtime period of a big hockey game. 6.) Send us on errands and check up on us. Theres nothing guys like more than to pop out of that soft, comfortable couch we were on, so that we could pick up some invaluable grocery items. Its good that you get us out into the real world, so that we can learn how to interact with the other husbands whove been sent out, too! Whats really important to us, is that you keep the communication lines open. When weve been gone for just a few minutes, phone us on our cells so that we can illegally talk while driving. We understand how important that call was, and were happy to just chat again on the phone. 7.) Remind us constantly of things we need to do. Thats right, this may sound wrong, but men dont know when the grass is the right height to be cut, or what day the garbage gets taken out. We need those little but constant reminders so that our minds dont stray to other things, like that overtime hockey game! While were on the topic of advice and errands that involve driving, tell us wheres the best place to park! Its so hard for us men to know just which parking spot at the mall is that one special one youve been picturing. By telling us this, at that right moment just before we shut off the engine, we can move our vehicle to the correct, and perfect spot! So, I hope todays column really helps you and your guy connect. These steps could lead you on to a whole new relationship. Now if youll excuse me, I have to watch Band of Brothers on NetFlix, to try and cancel out the estrogen in my Man Cave! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Remembering our roots

Irene Dougan
John Godsman Times Contributor

Irenes maiden name was Shrumm, and her Dads family moved from Ontario to Coaldale, Alta around 1907, where they farmed. Her dad, Claude Shrumm, was two years old at that time, the youngest of three children. When he was old enough to get married, he returned to Ontario and found his bride to be Olive Allen. They returned to the Coaldale area, where they were married on the farm in 1929. Irene was born on September 22, 1937, the third daughter of six girls. She completed all her education in Coaldale, before attending the University of Alberta for two years, where she graduated as a teacher. She taught

elementary grades at Shawnessy, near Picture Butte, for four years, where she lived in the teacherage. Later she moved to Lethbridge, where she boarded with three other teachers, but this required her to commute daily to Shawnessy in all kinds of weather. Her landlady was a bit of a matchmaker, and she finally persuaded Irene to apply for a teaching job in the Standard/ Strathmore area, so that she could meet the landladys cousin. Unfortunately for him, Irene was appointed as an elementary teacher to the Samuel Crowther School in Strath-

more in 1962. Through her attendance at the Strathmore United Church, she met Bryce Dougan, and they were married on November 9, 1963. This marriage produced one daughter and two sons, who have given Irene seven grandchildren, and a great- grandchild is expected any day. On the arrival of their first child, Irene became a full-time mother and piano teacher to between 30-40 children, who came to their house. Irene and her motherin-law May Dougan became members of the Womens Institute (W.I.) in Nightingale, but she let her membership lapse after her motherin-laws death in 1972. Irene has been very involved in church activities throughout her life, especial-

ly after moving to town. She became the United Church organist after Mary Mercer retired, and at the same time became the Choir Director. It was normal practice to see Irene playing the organ with one hand, and directing the choir with the other. She still plays the organ from time to time. In 1972, she joined the Order of The Eastern Star, after Bryce became a Mason. They were Charter Members of the Wheatland Whirlers Square Dance Club, which was formed in 1974, and they danced for the next 30 years. In 2005, Bryce and Irene separated. The main changes she has seen in this area is the population explosion of Strathmore. She thinks that when she moved here in 1962, the population was between 1,200-1,500! Look at it now. Irene really appreciates the community of Strathmore, for all it has done for her, and all the people involved in her life, especially her family.

Wheatland students squirm

This years spring concert held in the Wheatland Elementary school gym on June 4,was centred around things that squirm. Students showed through song and costume some of the positive aspects of our wiggly friends.

The Ojeda Family Circus came to the Civic Centre in Strathmore on June 4. Acts amazed and delighted young and old alike. The trapeze artist kept children speechless, hoping she would not fall to the hard floor below. Jario Ojeda and his wife Zonda team up with trained dogs to amaze and amuse the audience with canine antics.

A small band of circus performers entertained Strathmore families at the Civic Centre on June 4. The Circus is a family owned business venture that travels throughout Mexico and the United States. This was the second year that they have travelled to Canada. Jairo Ojeda lives in Texas and is the ringmaster. Along with his wife, there are 15 performers in the troop. The usual confections of cotton candy, peanuts and popcorn, along with neon trinkets, and clown noses were offered for sale to waiting patrons. Large helium balloons were the biggest hit. Ojeda said sales go to support the travelling costs for the show. He said there were fifth, sixth

and seventh generation circus performers in the group and some had performed with Ringling Brothers and the Shrine circus. Ojeda said the parent shows put up old-style tents and have larger animals in the act, but it is difficult to get large animals across the border. Ojedas troop uses only small animals in their act. Ojeda and his wife perform with a group of trick dogs and Ojeda does an amazing hola hoop performance. There were two aerial acts, one performed on a trapeze and another on stacking chairs, with the artist touching toes to the ceiling. No nets were used and the small crowd held their breath, fearing what would happen if there were a fall. There was a clown act, a juggler and a contortionist. After their two performances, the show was moving to Stettler.

Circus confusion
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor When a circus comes to town, there is usually a lot of commotion while acts unpack and set up. For the appearance of Magicland Circus, held June 4, at the Civic Centre, the commotion was around confusing ticket sales. The Town of Strathmore staff booked the event, posters were placed around town and Lar-Don Rentals agreed to sell advanced tickets for the event. However, Carolyn Larden began to suspect the Circus may not have been on the up and up, when she couldnt get any information about them verified, or find a contact number for the group. When they didnt appear at the agreed set up time on the day of performance, she shut down sales. Shortly before the first performance time, Larden said a man appeared at her store requesting money for the show. Larden replied if he could supply identification, to verify he was indeed with the circus, she would release the money and remaining tickets. No adequate identification was shown. I was suspicious that it was a scam, because they could not produce ID, said Larden. Larden said a little later, another man appeared; quite upset the funds were not released and accused her of fraud. Again she requested identification that linked them to the circus and it was not produced. Larden refused to release the money, suspicious they would leave town without delivering a show, leaving residents in the lurch. She said it came to her attention that attractions advertised on the posters were not part of the show. Children would be very disillusioned when what was advertised wasnt in the show. Several people complimented me for looking out for them, said Larden. Larden said the Town should be ashamed that they did not research the company better and felt the booking processes should be improved for future events. The circus troupe did provide two performances in one section of the Civic gym. The acts were acrobats, a clown and a trained dog act. The owners let people with presold tickets into the show, regardless of the dispute. Larden said the money for the tickets she sold were refunded back to any purchasers who produced tickets. She kept records of the tickets and amounts sold. There are seven yet unclaimed. She said refunds for those would be given back when the identified tickets are produced. If no one reclaims the money, it will be forwarded to charity in one year.

Carseland Aggie Days

Sharon Alce Carseland Contributor Carseland Aggie Days is fast approaching! A small community with a lot of action! Plan to visit us on the weekend of June 21-23. We have lots of activities to inspire all ages. We continually endeavour to make this event bigger, better and exciting for all. A 24 team, SPN Provincial Qualifier, slo-pitch ball tournament gets underway on Friday evening and runs all weekend. You are invited to cheer on your favourite team or just enjoy the exciting sport and action. Take time to relax in the beer gardens or get a bite from the concession. If you would like to show off your skills, or just have a great time, be sure to register your team. Saturday entails much hustle and bustle beginning with a breakfast sponsored by our local PB Club. You will want to be a spectator or participant for the parade that gets underway at 10 a.m., this years theme is Celebrating the Bow River. All entries are welcome. The streets are lined with lawn chairs for front row seats along the route, excited children have their bags or buckets ready to pick up the goodies thrown out to them. You will see floats, clowns, mascots, horses, antique cars and more. For the kids, there is always a Friday night special activity, this year being a magician and a movie. The kids are continually amused all day Saturday at the midway and grounds where there will be train rides, games, face painting, tattoos, and blow up slides and bounce house, seed planting, digging for coins in the money pit as well as the petting zoo and pony rides. Family fun includes the Show and Shine, Antique Tractor Pull, Ball Tournament, Hot Air Balloon Rides and checking out the Trade and Craft Fair. The Lions Club provides a Beer Gardens for the more mature crowd. The Carseland Lions are a major part of Carseland Aggie Days. They began their Annual BBQ in 1962 and it still exists today. There have been many changes throughout the years with the BBQ from locations at the Bow River to events sponsored. In years gone by, they have provided such activities as horseshoe tournaments, hot air balloon rides, rides on the famous Johansen bull, and camping. In the beginning years a dinner ticket included a chance to win a brand new car. Today, a ticket to the Carseland Lions BBQ includes your BBQ beef dinner with all the trimmings, chances on a number of cash draws and a Family Dance. Usually a special attraction is included after supper, this year you will be entertained by Elton John Tribute Artist The Lions Club also sponsors the popular Show and Shine, which includes many participants and admirers. Cars, Trucks and Motorcycles are all welcome to enter. Many owners come early and take part in the parade. In addition to this, the Lions sponsor the famous Antique Tractor Pull which draws the attention of many folks of all ages. We are pleased to be organizing our Trade and Craft Fair again this year. Last year was our first attempt at making this a big part of our Annual Carseland Aggie Days and Lions BBQ weekend. Due to its success, we are continuing on with this event once again. It is looking even more attractive this year. The Trade and Craft Fair will be open for business on Friday, June 21, 5 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 22nd, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We invite you to check out the unique items from the many vendors. You will find everything from plants to jewellery, makeup, photos, woodworking, spices, wearing apparel, specialty items or how about new windows and much, much more. Vendors are also welcome. For information on any of the events please check out our web site at www. carselandalberta.ca. or e-mail events@ carselandalberta.ca.

Crowther library partners with public library

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor The Crowther Memorial Junior High School library will offer a new service to students this fall. We have joined up with the public library (Strathmore Municipal Library) to give all our students (public) library cards, said Jennifer Young, Crowthers Library Clerk. This is so that our students will have access to the Overdrive system. The Overdrive system provides electronic materials, including e-books and audio books. Through another program, called the one-to-one initiative, every student will have a laptop to call their own, Young said. We felt that this is a perfect time to give students access to e-books, since all students will have a device to read on. Believe it or not, students still love to read. However, (the way) they are reading has changed. I have observed that students prefer to read on laptops, ereaders, phones, iPods, iPads, et cetera. With the Overdrive system, students can download a book at midnight on Saturday. They do not have to visit the library, and always have access 24/7. Students have Youngs determination and ingenuity to thank for their new privilege. We looked at running our own Overdrive system, she said. It was very cost prohibitive. But she wasnt easily deterred. I called the public library and inquired if they would be willing to drop the cost of a student card, she said. After a board meeting, they said yes, and sounded just as excited as I was. Of course, the new library cards still need to be paid for. As it stands now, we are going to pass the cost on to students as part of the school fees, Young said. If any service groups in town are interested in contributing to help fund this initiative, they can certainly call me. The cards are good for one year, so students will have to pay every year. In addition to the new public library card program, and the one-on-one laptop program, the Crowther School library will continue to be the site for School Fuel, a breakfast program. The Hope Church has supplied us with breakfast for two years now and we really appreciate it, said Young. I was tired of watching students drink energy drinks and calling that breakfast. The library will always be a supervised place for students to read, study and finish projects. The library is open before school, (and during) break and lunch, giving students access to printers, computers, books, and poster supplies (scissors, stickers and et cetera), Young said. This gives the students every opportunity to finish school projects at school, as well as a safe place to hang out. Asked if she had any further wishes for the Crowther Library, Young said, I already got my wish. However, she admitted that I would like to have an author(s) come in, but that is a financial issue as well. Young is proud to say her library was recently featured on the School Libraries in Canada website: http://clatoolbox.ca/ casl/slicv31n2/312profile.html. Anyone whod like to volunteer or donate to Crowther Schools library projects is invited to call Jennifer Young at 403-934-4646.

Not in my backyard
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Lance Knapton appeared at Town Council on June 5, to ask the Town to develop a bylaw that would require the owners of trees to pay for costs that neighbours incur through leaf drift and shedding. Knaptons neighbour has 50 ft poplar trees. My issue is not a few leaves or branches. I removed 30 bags of leaves last year, on top of the branches I removed over the course of the summer. There were 10 more bags of leaves sitting over the winter that had to be removed this spring. I paid $165 for a lawn maintenance company to rake an additional 15 bags of leaves and it will cost $1,000 for trimming upper branches, said Knapton. He said the trees are also causing property damage with their sticky bud shed. He has an antique car that has been affected by buds as well. Ive got sticky buds all over my truck, all over my car, all over my steps, my back walk, all over my roof and my gutters are full. I have to get up there and clean it up, said Knapton. He brought pictures for the councillors to see. He offered to pay half the costs for clean up, or to have the trees removed. His neighbour would not agree to split the cost with him. It was noted that this is an issue all over town and in other municipalities. I appreciate trees, said Knapton. but, I feel if you have trees like that, you should be responsible for them. If the trees had been infringing on power lines, the power company would be able to trim them. It was suggested that Council could write a letter on his behalf to the neighbour, but private property issues dont fall under municipal bylaws. They are dealt with in civil court. Knapton replied he did not have confidence in the court system and it would cost a lot more. Councillors expressed sympathy for his dilemma, but denied his request for a bylaw. They asked that administration check on possible solutions used by other municipalities.

After taking a hiatus to become a stay-at-home mom to her children, Janelle got her Mortgage Broker license and spent a couple of years in that very detailed, number crunching career. When it was time to make a change, Jim Turner, President and CEO at Action Insurance Group, was within ear shot when Janelle was describing her perfect job. From there, the discussion started and it was agreed, they could work together. Janelles previous work in law, dispute resolution and detailed, number crunching jobs, all led Janelle into the insurance industry. It seemed that every job she worked in had some type of relevance in the insurance field. After 2 years in the Calgary head office of Action Insurance Group and receiving her Level 1 and Level 2 Insurance Broker license, she transferred to the Strathmore office. She loves the small town feel of the office and prefers the much shorter commute time. Jim Turner started Action Insurance Group in 2007 in Calgary. Jim himself has been in the industry for over 25 years originally starting working for his father, Dave Turner, who owned the original Action Insurance Center in the early 1980s. Dave is more recently known for his involvement with Countryside Agencies here in Strathmore prior to his retirement. In 2011, the Strathmore branch of Action Insurance Group was opened with Heather Roberts appointed as branch manager. Heather, Janelle and Valancy all live in the community and have an excellent reputation in town of providing great rates and fantastic service in all lines of business. As of June 1, 2013, Janelle is now a full time Broker, managing her current book of business as well as writing new personal lines policies. This includes automobile, home (home, condo, tenants package), motorcycles, trailers, etc. Her area of expertise and interest is definitely in the personal lines end of insurance. Janelle is ready to quote any and all personal lines business. Feel free to give her a call at any time at 403-934-2125 or email Janelle@actioninsurancegroup.com.

Introducing Janelle Pettifer

Janelle Pettifer was born and raised in Standard, Alberta. After graduating with the majority of classmates she went to kindergarten with, Janelle spent the next 10 years living and working in Calgary. Now she lives 20 minutes from where she grew up with her husband of 20 years and four children. Janelle was a legal assistant from 1988 to 1991. From 1991 to 1993, she worked for an architectural firm, mainly in their accounting department. She went back to law in 1993, where she was involved in a dispute resolution company. Their mandate was to encourage people who have been injured in car accidents and the insurance representation to consider mediation as an alternative to the court systems.

Youth Club secures funding

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Council agreed to fully fund two part time positions, at 29 hours per week, for the Strathmore Youth Club and subsidize up to 40 hours per week for facilitors that work with the youth until December 2013. In Jan. 2014, the part time positions will become full time. The youth are our future here in the community, said Mayor Grajczyk. We are all together on looking after the future of our youth. Some of them will be sitting in this chair one day. Its up to us to teach them, to lead and show them there is a future in this community. It doesnt take long to look after 60 or 70 or 100 thousand dollars of damage from graffiti and if we keep them active, those things dont happen. The club will still exist as a charitable organization and the agreement would be similar to the partnership the Town has with the Handi-bus. Councillor Pat Fule sits on the Youth Club board and said the new partnership will give the board stability, help with grant applications and lead to future partnership possibilities. All councillors agreed it was a valuable program for the youth. The cost will be $60,000 for the balance of 2013, with funds coming from the Town Stabilization Fund. Discussions with FCSS determined that running parallel programs for the youth was inefficient and this option prevented duplication of services. In 2009, under the umbrella of the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, Summer Camp began. They registered as the Youth Club of Strathmore in September 2011. The club has provided opportunities for children to form positive relationships, strengthen self esteem on confidence and develop skills. The cost to the town was questioned as the $60,000 would double after January 2014. This is a small price to pay to secure something for the youth of this community. Whether it is $60,000, $100,000 or $150,000 it is a small price to pay. I think we owe it to them, said Councillor John Remple. Councillor Rocky Blokland said it shows we are serious about making youth a part of our community and Councillor Bob Sobol thought it would pay off in the long run.

Tree planting for community bonds

A number of community members equipped with shovels helped Strathmores Birth Forest grow by 35 trees on June 1. Seasoned With Thyme is the name of the chorus singers that serenaded seniors at the Seniors Power conference, held at Hope Church on June 6. Seniors enjoyed displays specific for their lifestyles. The day was organized jointly by Bridging the Gap and Wheatland and Family Community Support Services. Lynn Walker Program Manager of WFCSS said everything went really well. Workshops were held on Estate planning, heart health and activity levels. Wheatland Lodge celebrates their 50th year in the County and at their booth, Vicki Cook (l) and Manni Rimstad answered all questions.

KEEP oN PRAYiNg! Many worship services include a time where people together say the Lords Prayer.(Matthew 6: 9-13) If you are a bit older, you may even remember reciting (praying) it together in school. Often when we sit down for a meal we will pray. Well ask someone to say grace. Sometimes when there are big tragedies, pastors will be invited to pray at public events. And if our children are too scared to go to sleep because they are scared of the boogey man, well pray with them. But why do we pray? Is this like a good luck charm that if we rub it just right or repeat the words correctly, well have good luck? Do we think of prayer like that wish we make after blowing out the candles on our birthday cake? 1. Prayer is addressing God. The Lords Prayer begins: Our Father in heaven. We arent just talking into the wind, but we are addressing God. While it is true that we may have different understandings of who God is, we are still addressing God. We are talking to Someone we believe is bigger than the problem we are facing after all, how often do we pray when things are going well? 2. Prayer is acknowledging our helplessness. We are saying that this one is just too big for me/us to handle. As if we dont need God in the rest of our life? We are admitting that we cant fix everything. The Lords Prayer continues: Give us today our daily bread. We admit that we need God to step in, not just in the BIG moments, but in the daily moments. 3.Prayer is submitting to Gods will or at least it should be. The Lords Prayer also says: your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We dont often see Gods will being done around us. And maybe we ourselves arent too interested in doing your will. But if we are praying for Gods help, if we recognize our helplessness, why wouldnt we also see that we need to do the will of the One Whom we are asking to step in and fix the situation? Keep on praying. And expect God to step in!

Senior nominated for giving spirit

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Patricia Frederick is a well-known face about the Strathmore Community. She volunteers her time to many agencies in town. She works with patients in Continuing Care, helps at the Library, gives time to the Health Unit and aids in the Breast Health program, just to name a few programs where her energy and positive spirit make a difference. I try to help out wherever I can, said Frederick. It is a chance to give back to the community. They have been good to me and so I give a little something back. Frederick said she finds the work fulfilling and thinks that it enhances her social life and gives her interesting things to do. All her efforts gained her a nomination for the 2013 Seniors Award. The awards were given June 5 and she was among 88 people nominated across Alberta for the award. The awards are based on the positive impact nominees have on seniors and the community; the need for the service they provide; the quality, diversity and originality of their service. While Frederick certainly fulfills all of these criteria in her work, she wasnt one of the four

people finally chosen for the award. They were Dr. Zohra Husaini, Edmonton; Sylvia Krikun, Mayerthorpe; Bob Schmaus, Calgary; Bob Schmaus, Calgary and Gail Wolfe, Cold Lake. Four agencies were also awarded recognition. They were McLennans Lakeview Pioneers Society, Calgarys LINKages Society of Alberta, Edmontons Multicultural Women and Seniors Services Association, and the Stony Plain Meals on Wheels. The Premier recently moved all departments relating to seniors under the Ministry of Health. Seniors programs are under the care of Minister Fred Horne and George VanderBerg is the Associate Minister of Seniors. We have some wonderful volunteers in our province who give their time and energy every day to help support seniors, said George VanderBergs. These awards are just one way we can appreciate these volunteers and all that they do. Frederick said working with the elderly that she is dismayed at the many cuts happening to seniors programs. She is just one of many people in Strathmore that went to Kinsmen Park on June 7, to raise her voice in protest over moving seniors to private care and cutting money from Home Care programs for seniors and the disabled.

Sale success
Organizer Sam Woodley was very happy with the town participation in the first annual Strathmore Town Garage Sale. Over 70 homes were registered and published on the sale route map, and even more set up shop to participate. It was a lot of work to organize and hopefully as years go on the annual event can grow and expand. Woodley joined Kristel Lang (l) and her Dog Jog Team to donate 50 per cent of their profits to the annual Calgary Humane Society fundraiser.

Feedback from farmers on MDP

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Voices from the audience at the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) open house held in Cheadle on May 30 expressed that subdivision regulations would not protect farmland from being developed. The new MDP allows five subdivisions on a section of land prior to the need for an Area Service Plan (ASP). County Project Manager Linda Henrickson said that previously the growth management strategies were very strong policies, at one subdivision per section, and council decided to loosen up those restrictions. Since councils have changed, philosophies have changed. Five parcels out of a quarter section is encouraging these little cluster groups throughout the county, said an audience member. You say Ag is key. Someone who doesnt live here will buy a quarter and take five titles out of a parcel. They save houses from the landfill in Calgary, put them on and we as neighbours have to deal with that. Consultant Alex Taylor said the alternative is not drawing a line, which opens the potential development for twenty parcels not requiring an ASP, and one with two or three requiring an ASP. He said it is unfair to choose winners and losers. The first couple people get five parcels and the third person may not get them. By drawing a line, some of the discretion is taken from Council, it establishes the rule. Some members felt that mobile or modular homes should be restricted and there should be different rules for developing on good farmland. It is not councils place to say you have to live in a house, you cant live a mobile home. There are people that have to live in less expensive dwellings, because that is what they can afford. Its very difficult for council to step their toe over the line, to decide what kind of lifestyle people can and cant live in this County, said Henrickson. The other thing is, we used to be strictly grain farmers. Now there isnt as many grain farms as there used to be. We used to look at the type of soil. Soil to grow grain on was considered to be primo soil. Today everything is considered agricultural, because every soil and every landscape can be used for agricultural in some way. It can be pasture, or greenhouses or anything in agricultural use. Soil isnt as precious as it was. I dont know if that is good or bad. I guess that is a decision that will prove itself over time. It was clarified that what can and cant be built, or its permanence falls more under the area of Land Use Bylaws and permits, but an overarching policy could be developed in the MDP. There was some confusion over the servicing requirements. The plan encourages clustering the houses and using collective well sites, but having separate septic fields. In another section they are encouraging linking into community services and discouraging communal sites. Planners said they were using provincial guidelines and that Alberta Health was discouraging the use of communal systems. They said by limiting the number of wells, it limits further subdivision, but would defer to what ratepayer and Council wanted. There was also some confusion over Area Service Plans already in play. Land owners wondered if they would have to have theirs amended or get new ones, or if they would be grandfathered over. The response was not all inclusive, as they would be looked at on a case-by-case basis once the MDP was approved. It was suggested those that were already accepted would not have to change. There was a question over the directives used in the plan. One member asked when push comes to shove, what does the term discourage mean? The MDP policies can be written either-they must- should-or may. A lot of these are the should variety. They should, but there are no repercussions if they arent. Once they put in mustit absolutely has to, and sometimes people think thats too strong. So, it depends on a case by case basis. If you think they should be prohibited, or cannot be or if discouraged is too much the other way, let us know. We are trying to find the balance with this document, said Taylor. Another person questioned recreational provisions. Where are we on the agreement of recreational facilities with the Town of Strathmore? The more growth we have around Strathmore, we will be putting more pressure on recreational facilities and they will be pushing back for more user fees, he said. Taylor said there is nothing yet in the MDP apart from the inclusion of parks and recreation. He suggested discussions with Council should be to coordinate growth and decide where those regional recreation services should be placed. Just a general observation, on the discussion that the number one priority is agriculture for this countyif we continue down this road we are going now, of allowing all these subdivisions, then we do not truly believe that agriculture is the priority for this county, said Don Sundgaard, a poultry farmer living near Standard. Also, if you look at the future by adding more than one, two, three or six subdivisions in a quarter sectionthe demographics 10 years down the road, of the small landowners will dictate about what happens in the future forever, in this county. If we the landowners of this county support the number one priority, then some of things in this plan need to be changed. You cant satisfy everybody. You talk about winners and losers. If you continue to allow these subdivisions the loser will be agriculture. Residents and ratepayers have the summer to make recommendations and changes to the plan. The final draft will go for approval in September.

Town election bylaw Rosebud Theatre brings Jesus

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor New changes in the municipal election act were accepted by council on June 5. Administration is bringing forward the elections bylaw. It is pretty much general housekeeping for the upcoming election in October. There is not very many changes, just some changes to reflect new legislation that has been brought forward by the province, said Jennifer Sawatsky, Town of Strathmore Administration clerk Changes were: Voters must present photo ID to vote Those running for election must include $250 with their nomination form Nomination forms with inadequate number of signatures will be automatically declined Voting hours on election day move to 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The running fee was previously $200 and it was suggested to be raised to $500.Council can set the fee at any amount. Those who are elected get their deposit returned. If the candidate gets 60 per cent of the vote, fees are returned. Councillor Earl Best debated that $500 was too steep a fee for potential candidates and it may restrict some people from running for council. Councillor Bob Sobol agreed and said other communities set fees between $100-$250. Mayor Grajczyk and Councillor Rocky Blokland felt $500 indicated the candidates were serious about running. Without being rude to anybody, I keep thinking that if you dont have $500is that unfair of me to say...how good of businessman are you? Is that unfair? Think about it folks, this is serious, serious business. If you are that popular you (can) always borrow it from somebody, if you are that broke that day. Maybe that is rude of me to say, but that is what I think, said Grajczyk. Councillor Bob Sobol suggested no-one would intentionally throw $250 away. Councillor John Rempel agreed, unless it was a strategy to to split votes from another candidate. Councillor Dave Hamilton suggested the candidate orientation would weed out less than serious candidates. The amount was held at $250 and the bylaw was passed through third reading. Council also approved the leaseof a vote tabulator and tech support cost at a price of $14,500 for the October 2013 election. Your worship I believe that at the last election results were tabulated and we had everything done by a quarter to nine. The previous years they were there until well after 2 a.m., said Councillor Best. All councillors agreed that the lease was in everyones best interest.

to Cotton Patch Georgia

Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Take an age-old story thats been inspiring people for thousands of years. Add music with the flavour of bluegrass and lyrics that are funny, specific and personal. Roll in a cast of gifted musical actors and you get Rosebuds summer 2013 production: Cotton Patch Gospel, running May 31 to August 24. Cotton Patch Gospel is the story of Jesus life set in modern-day Georgia, U.S.A. The twelve disciples have names like Rock and Andy, Matt, Jim and Judd. Televangelists and leaders of church denominations have replaced the Pharisees. And the disciples still fish or collect taxes for a living, but a Volkswagon (VW) bus has become their chief mode of transport. The seven-member Cotton Patch Gospel band tells the story as much through the light, fun bluegrass music as through spoken word, enriching it with banjo, guitar, fiddle, bass, harmonica and ukulele. This music is as creative and well-performed as Ive come to expect at Rosebud Theatre. The band includes three young women who are upper-year students at Rosebud School of the Arts Amy Burk, Alixandra Cowman, Lauren de Graaf and they all shine here. Bill Hamm, who both performs and directs the music, was inspired to feature them though that meant theyd play several male roles -when he heard them sing dinner music during previous Rosebud shows. Nathan Schmidt, Ryan Schroeder and Joel Stephanson complete the cast. I was fascinated by Amy Burks convincing transformation into imperious, jealous King Herod, but it took me a while to wrap my head around Jesus played by young, blond Lauren de Graaf. I got over my resistance, though, and

the story became very personal, as de Graaf took us through Jesus changing emotions authority, gentleness, fury, love, sorrow and hope. One of my favourite moments was Burks dancing in the aisle a.k.a. walking on water -- as Jesus disciple Rock (Simon Peter). I laughed aloud when Tommy and Tanya -Hamm and Burk sang a duet to lead-in their evangelical radio show. And I was touched when the disciples Schmidt and Burk responded to Jesus teaching like sheepish siblings, by practicing forgiveness and putting each other first. I dont usually like Bible stories transplanted into modern contexts they usually seem irrelevant and contrived, but I found Cotton Patch meaningful, timely brand new. Cotton Patch Gospel tells the story at the center of Christianity, but, regardless of faith or background, everyone will find enjoyment and inspiration here. Go to www.rosebudtheatre.com for information and tickets, which includes a delicious buffet dinner that introduces new menu items for every new show. I like to go early and round out my Rosebud experience by checking out the gift shops, wandering down the valley, and visiting an art gallery or two.

Rayanne and Shelby Laycock have both been competing since they were 3 years old. Proudly both girls got Marks of Distinction in their musical pieces. Rayanne competed in the Girls 12 and under vocal solo singing Butterflies, and her second song was The Water is Wide. Shelby performed a Musical Theatre solo in the 12 and under category with My Party Dress. Susanne Sevick placed second in the province in Piano Solo Grade 5 and 6 requiring two pieces of music. Sevicks piano teacher from Strathmore Carolyn Steeves remarked, She played first of 13 competitors from various festivals around the province representing the Drumheller Festival and am pleased to announce she placed second. The first piece was 6 variations in G major and the second piece performed was A Sauntering Tune. Mom Margo Sevick was pleased with her performance and said Susanne had fun and really liked the Adjudicator Michel Fournier who was fantastic with the kids. Chelsea Murphy from Rosebud performed well in her two categories of Musical Theatre. In her Up tempo piece named Mad Dogs and Englishmen by Noel Coward she placed second in the province, and in her Ballad piece, My Dog by William Finn she placed first. The inspiring 18-yearold from Rosebud will be attending UBCO in the fall in preparation to attend Nursing School. It is great to know that we have such wonderful young artists in our communities to represent us in the provincial levels.

with concerts, speakers, workshops and fun, that kept them going from 8 p.m. on the Friday night until 6 p.m. on Sunday. The concerts were the best part - especially Skillet, said Pettifer, referring to the multi-platinum selling group that played the opening concert on Friday night. Others enjoyed the speakers, such as Reggie Dabbs, who spoke about how Gods love and grace was the key to setting them free from past hurts and tragedies. Other speakers included Matthew Barnett, founder of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, and Bob Goff, author of the New York Times best-selling book Love Does, both of whom encouraged the youth to put the love God has for them into action for others and not to let anyone tell them they were too young to do so.

Brentwood hosts Fun Run
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Run Clubs from Wheatland Elementary, Westmount Elementary, Carseland School and Trinity Christian Academy schools joined 49 joggers from the Brentwood group for a fun (competitive) run on June 6. There were 170 students in total who ran routes of either two km or four km. This is the first time weve ever done this, with all the kids from all the different schools, said Brentwood coach Ben Sader, who has two children attending Brentwood. Its so much fun to see these kids out here running. The Brentwood Run Club made up of Grade three to six students practice at least two lunch periods each week, all through the fall and spring. Each season the group has an interclub event of their own, similar to the fun run. Theyve also competed in the Foothills Advocacy In Motion Society Run on June 1, and have raced at Canada Olympic Park. They are improving their fitness levels, and they just seem to be improving their self-esteem. Weve had comments from teachers telling us, that theyre just that much brighter and more apt to learn, Sader said. Home school facilitator at Brentwood Elementary, Lori Clarke, sees similar growth as well. Its not just the physical improvements that weve seen. For a lot of kids, this is the first team theyve been a part of, Clarke said. So I see them cheering each other on, I see a lot of encouraging each other to get out to practices, and I see a lot of friendships developing because of it too.
The Brentwood Run Club hosted their first Fun Run to Wheatland Elementary, Westmount Elementary, Carseland Elementary, and Trinity Christian Academy after lunch on June 6. 170 students ran either 2 km or 4 km. Top: The kids start strong across the field onto the race route. Each schools Run Club has anywhere from 25-50 participants, from grades three to six. Strathmore welcomes 55 Plus Summer Games

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore is expected to welcome over 1,000 game enthusiasts, when hosting the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in July 2015. Using facilities all over town, including schools and the Family Centre, a number of sports will be featured. Games Director Dennis Allen says some events are more sedentary, while others can be really active. Its quite a range, Allen said. It provides for an opportunity for people of any type of fitness level. Slo-pitch, athletics, cycling, swimming, and tennis may require a bit more physical training, whereas cribbage, bridge, pool, and military whist will require preparation, but not nearly as much athletically. Bocce, floor curling, floor shuffleboard, golf and horseshoes events will also be held. Acting Chair for the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks, and Wildlife Foundation, John Short, said the bidding committee found Strathmore to be almost irresistible: The selection committee toured this community and went back to Edmonton with a lot of good things to say. The Alberta 55 Plus Games are made possible by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, with help from the Alberta 55 Plus Association. The Foundation is supporting Strathmore with $175,000 in grants. I am super excited about what this will do for your community, but Im also excited as to what your community will do for these games, said Minister of Tourism, Parks, and Recreation, Richard Starke. The games contribute to the community, both in terms of organizational ability, and in terms for the community to gain confidence, and the legacy of the facilities that you have in the community as a result of the games. These games celebrate an active, healthy lifestyle of our province. Starke spoke of the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, the 1982 Lloydminster Winter Games, the 1988 Calgary Olympics, and the 1994 Lacombe Sr. Games; each of these communities still speak of the transformative time, and the confidence and pride their towns and cities have gained with hosting such large scale events. Most of them, he said, go on to host more. It infused a sense of confidence and an ability for the community to work together on something like this, so I am so excited for the community of Strathmore, for what you are going to be able to experience over the next two years, in planning for this, Starke said. Thats how we do things in Alberta. We do things because we gather together as a community, and we work together to make these events successful. Over 700 volunteers will be needed for everything from food to transportation to opening and closing ceremonies. Mayor Steve Grajczyk believes the participants will enjoy our friendly atmosphere and hospitality, along with our impressive facilities. Now the work beginsand we know you can do it, Grajczyk said. We are pleased to have an opportunity to showcase our community and take part in a fun-filled weekend of spirited competition and camaraderie, Proud of all that Strathmore has to offer, we are confident the games will be outstanding.

3rd annual Hershey games

The third annual Strathmore Hersheys Track and Field Games were held on June 8 at Wheatland Elementary School. Elementary school students from different schools in town gathered to compete. The games, sponsored by The Hershey Company, promote a healthy active lifestyle and offer school children an introduction to track and field. The top four participants in each of three events; track, softball throw and standing long jump will move on the provincials to be held in Edmonton on June 22.

Strathmore Rodeo shared via webcast

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) has paired with iLink Media and Rogers Media to present webcast and television coverage of six events: the Daines Ranch Rodeo, the Wainwright Stampede, the Ponoka Stampede, the Medicine Hat Stampede, the Strathmore Stampede Rodeo on August 5, and the CFR Rodeo Championships in Edmonton come November. The Canadian Finals Rodeo is very excited about the most recent announcement pertaining to TV and webcast coverage of the CFR, said John Windwick, CFR commissioner. Its an opportunity to share all six performances with rodeo fans across Canada and the world. This is the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Finals Rodeo, and with this new presentation, awareness for the sport is expected to rapidly grow, as will Alberta Tourism. The CPRA has been working very hard the last couple of years to try and expose rodeo to as many fans and potential fans as possible. Working with a group like iLink and with Rogers brings a whole new level of exposure for us, said CPRA Rodeo Administrator, Kynan Vine. Cowboys and cowgirls work hard all year to make the finals in Edmonton, and not all of their dedicated fans can make the performances, so this is just another way to help people watch the sport they love, and maybe promote the sport of rodeo to a new audience. The website (www.roadtothecfr.com) went live on June 10.

Left: Ciara Ennis (r), with two STARS volleyball participants from the youngest session. Above: The kids practice their serving with the assistance of the coaches. The lower badminton nets help with their smaller statures.

STARS; volleyball for life

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter In 1995, the STARS basketball program began in Okotoks and spread throughout Western Canada, teaching the fundamentals of the game to kids who normally wouldnt learn until much later. Eventually interest grew for badminton and volleyball as well. STARS volleyball is now in their 10 year in Strathmore, with Pat Fule organizing sessions on Monday nights at Wheatland Elementary. We teach them the rules of the play, how to hit, and how to serve, Fule said. Then we get them into mini volleyball games with coaches on their teams, and because theyre Grade 1, 2, and 3, we have them play on the height of the badminton net. Fule hopes programs like this will encourage the children to like the sport at a younger age. Because the badminton net is the right height for them, they can actually jump and hit the ball down. So they learn the footwork, the arm swing, and then they learn how to play some volleyball, Fule said. We teach them how to spike right away in the first lesson; they love doing that, especially if they can hit a coach. The volunteer coaches junior and senior high students were once STARS volleyball kids themselves. What theyve done is theyve stayed with us, normally until they start playing junior high. Then they play on the junior high teams, and from there they sometimes go onto club volleyball, and then obviously high school volleyball, Fule said. We try to give them the right foot in the door so they know how to do the basics early on. A perfect example is 15-year-old Ciara Ennis, who played for five years with Fule. She credits her passion for volleyball from the program; shell be playing club volleyball next season with the Spruce Grove Ravens. I really enjoy helping out, and volunteering; its a lot of fun, she said. Visit www.jetsathletics.com for more information. There are three different sessions available: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for Grades 1 to 2, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30p.m. for the Grade 3 to 5 students, and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for Grades 6 to 9. The cost is $150 for 10 hours of instruction, a t-shirt, and a lot of funI hope, said Fule.

Lucky cyclists to ride with pros

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Fifteen cyclists will ride along with former winner of the Tour de France, Alex Stieda, on the Tour of Alberta route come this September. The riders will follow the five main stages of the course each race day, just like the pros, including Strathmore to Drumheller on Sept. 6. Any experienced road cyclists - men or women - comfortable drafting in a group formation are welcome to apply. If you have a beautiful road bike, have shaved legs that have endured some long, hard rides, and you know what the terms drafting, echelon and prologue mean, this is your kind of ride, said Stieda, who now lives in Edmonton. Not for the weak of heart, this is a bucket-list experience for anyone who wants to know what its like to be a pro cyclist in a major stage race. The amateurs will stay in the same hotels as the professionals, and will have VIP access - including tickets to the opening and closing galas. Over 900km will be covered by the pros and the 15 riders, and both will have access to mechanical support, massage therapists, and meals. They need to be riding at least three times a week, and on the weekends, at least a three, four, five hour ride, by the end of August, Stieda said. Im their guide, and well definitely be riding at a hard pace, but the idea is for us to stay together, and work together as a team in order to stay ahead of the pro racers, who are starting about four hours later than we are. Most of the professional teams to compete hail from the U.S.: Garmin-Sharp (including Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, 2012 Giro DItalia Champion), BMC Racing (lead by world champion Phillipe Gilbert, and 10-time Tour de France stage winner Thor Hushovd), Team SmartStop, and Optum Pro Cycling. The Champion System team from China has 2012 Canadian National Champion Ryan Roth on their roster, as well as Ryan Anderson of Edmonton. Other featured teams include Blano and Argos-Shimano of the Netherlands, Cannondale Pro Cycling of Italy, and Canadas own Equipe GarneauQuebecor. The remaining six groups will be announced later this month. Stieda was a large part in bringing all these athletes to the Tour of Alberta, the first major stage professional race in Canada. Thanks to Alex Stiedas commitment to the sport of cycling, the lucky few who will be a part of this event will not only have a first class experience but will also get some world-class coaching and training along the way, said Duane Vienneau, the executive director of the Alberta Peloton Association, the group that organized the tour. Participants are required to bring their own gear, and the total cost is $9,500, with half due on the deadline application of June 30. Submissions can be made to alex@stiedacycling.com.

Reds to host tournament at Kinsmen

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore Reds AA Midget Baseball team will welcome local Alberta teams for a tournament the weekend of June 15 and 16 at Kinsmen Park. This is the second round tier of four divisions in total to go towards Provincials on July 19. Sitting at 2-4 in league play, the boys have started to come together after the second week of the season, where they won their tournament in Lethbridge on May 18. We had a bit of a weaker start we had a couple of arm injuries to some pitchers, said Head Coach Ross Quennell. And we do have a very young team, a lot of our core came out of bantam last year. That same core won the bantam silver at the Western Canada tournament last year, an experience at a high level that will certainly benefit the Reds come provincials. The younger core is actually a big impact on the team, even though they are 15-years-old, Quennell said. Its been a natural talentmost of them are just naturally athletic boys. Quennell has been coaching pretty much half the team since mosquito baseball, he said. I feel like Ive watched these boys grow up. As for the tournament at Kinsmen, the Reds believe Stony Plain Royals will be their biggest competition, based on their record. Stony Plains bats have been strong this season; they had 18 runs in their second game of the year against Edmonton. Quennell doesnt feel that his boys are at much of a disadvantage. Our hitting is a big part of our game, he said. Our defense is coming around very well right now, and our pitching is probably the strongest point of the team. Strathmore takes on Okotoks at 11 a.m. and Leduc at 5 p.m. on June 15, facing off against Stony Plain the following day at 4 p.m.

Bergquist,
Arthur John Robert
June 27, 1923 June 3, 2013 Arthur Bergquist was born in Calgary Alberta on June 27, 1923. His father homesteaded a farm in Carsland, Alberta, Canada where Arthur grew up. He was the youngest of six children. He went into the Canadian Air Force at 17 years of age. He was married to his first wife Eleanor from 1946 until her passing in 1979. Arthur graduated from the University of Alberta as a Petroleum Engineer. He worked for Canadian Superior Oil in Calgary AB and Lockheed Offshore Petroleum in Vancouver, BC and Houston, TX. His career took him to almost every continent in the world. Arthurs three girls have been his delight. They are Sharron Eshpeter (children: Jordan/Elizabeth, Travis/ Jillian, Chelsey) Gwen Bergquist, and Diane Kurtenbach (husband Ken). Arthur had an appreciation for music and was a beautiful piano player. He also loved nature and going for long drives in the country and always enjoyed a spectacular view. Arthur and Berta have been married for 33 years. When he married Berta he became a loving stepfather to Bertas three children. They are Heather Roberts (husband Wayne; children: Diana Lange, Meagan/Andrew Birch, Lyndsay/Jesse Ratson), John Davison (wife Donna; children: Tina, Freddie), Patty Muhlert (husband Ted; son Quentin/Stephanie). They also have 9 great grandchildren. Right from the beginning Arthur and Bertas lives became an adventure. Arthurs work took them to Israel for one year and then to Denver, CO. They spent 10 years in full time ministry with Youth With A Mission and took outreach teams to the Philippines and China. Arthur was one of the founding members of North Sound Church in Edmonds, WA where he enjoyed serving as an elder on the board for 7 years. His gift for teaching was evident in the Bible Studies he led and the people whose lives he invested into over the years. His passionate love for Jesus and faithful witness to others never wavered even through his battle with a fractured leg, hip replacements and prostrate cancer. Jesus took him home peacefully on June 3rd, 2013. Loving husband, faithful father, dearest friend and will be missed by all. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Revelations 2:10) Memorial Service will be held at North Sound Church, Edmonds, Saturday, June 15, 10:00am.
