Hellboy. The stories were weird, the character memorable and the mythology

The first book that I distinctly remember that got me into comics was

complex and intricate, it was the perfect gateway to get a teenager addicted to comic books. From that point on I knew that comics would be an integral part of my life. I grew up with comics around my entire life, when I was little my mother

would bring back Asterix comics from her trips for me to learn how to read. When I I tried to incorporate comics into a majority of my artwork. Also in high school I

was in high school I was the president of an afterschool extracurricular art club and would go to library to read comics on beanbags. My love for comics has grown into a need to foster a community in the form of being vice president of UCSD comic book club. Which now leads me to write this statement for Comic Sutra Over the years Ive read a variety comics ranging from DCs imprint Vertigo,

long form web comics and critically acclaimed manga. Comics themselves have become a core part of my personal identity and one of my favorite forms of

of habits when reading comics; I preferred to read comics from talented authors rather than following specific series, comics form Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis,

Ysuke Murata and Mike Mignola had wider appealed to me. I also started to notice

the intricate details of comics such as panel layout, color use, composition and I took

special notice of lines used to indicate movement or action. I think about that time I began to seriously consider myself a comic book fan. Lately I have taken my comic book love and turned it into fostering a

community in the form of being the vice president of UCSDs comic book club. My

goal for the club was to create a physical space at UCSD that appreciated comic and

encouraged everyone to be vocal about loving comics. It has been challenging work every club meeting, scheduling comic book shop outings and just being consistent every week. The club is always looking to enrich UCSDs comic book selection and draw attention to new and exciting comics. Sometimes it just feel really rough Im

Its my honest hope is that after I book club. graduate UCSD, Ill be able to return five years later and still see a functioning comic In my personal reflection of my own work I noticed a few themes that come

to mind. I enjoy using framing and panel layout that is grossly similar to manga. Also in composition I also enjoy the crudeness of small press and old comics, one of the at DC. I have a focus on fantasy based character design meaning that character I larger influences I take from would be Jack Kirby and his work during his run over usually use all have odd costumes or interesting but impractical clothing. With that said its unsurprising that I prefer sci-fi or modern fantasy setting more than other genres. I believe that one my biggest themes for stories and overall narrative is loops, endings that are beginnings, things that change but are still very much the

same, Im obsessed with the idea that people all behave in certain conventions and my hope is that by drawing attention to these behaviors readers will have a reminder to reflect on their own lives and grow as a result. But that is the hope of what my work will do, I still have a long road to get to that point but Im learning every day.

In the end this is just another step in a wider path set out before me, starting

Im highly grateful for all the opportunities I have to show off my work and to make friends who also make comics. Comic sutra, Cat 124/125 and everyone who I have met in the class just reaffirm that this is a positive step in my life.
