Aluminium materials and articles in contact with food There is no European legislation on metal materials and articles intended to come into contact with food up to now. A Council of Europe guideline for metals and alloys as food contact materials (amongst others also a Guideline on Aluminium) was published in March 2001. It is currently revised. The current draft can be provided on request. There are three standards existing for aluminium in contact with foodstuffs: EN 601 EN 602 Aluminium and aluminium alloys Castings Chemical composition of castings for use in contact with food Aluminium and aluminium alloys Wrought products Chemical composition of semi-finished products used for the fabrication of articles for use in contact with food Aluminium and aluminium alloys Specific requirements on the chemical composition of products intended to be used for the manufacture of packaging and packaging components Aluminium and aluminium alloys Special requirements for anodised products for use in contact with food

Further Council of Europe Resolutions and Guidelines on food contact materials The Committee of Ministers has adopted the following Resolutions: Resolution AP (89) 1 on the use of colourants in plastic materials coming into contact with food Resolution AP (92) 2 on control of aids to polymerisation for plastic materials and articles Resolution AP (97) 1 on ion exchange and adsorbent resins used in the processing of foodstuffs (superseding Resolution AP (89) 2) Resolution AP (99) 3 on silicones used for food contact applications Resolution AP(2002) 1 on paper and board materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs Framework Resolution AP(2004)1 on coatings intended to come into contact with food (replacing Resolution AP (96) 5) Resolution AP(2005)2 on packaging inks applied to the non-food contact surface of food packaging materials and articles intended to come into contact with food

Since the coating industry feels that the Resolution AP (2004)1 is not applicable in its present form, the European Council of the Paint, Printing Ink and Artistss Colours Industry (CEPE) developed together with other trade associations a Code of Practice for Coated Articles where the Food Contact Layer is a Coating. It can be downloaded from the CEPE website (www.cepe.org). Since the printing ink industry feels that the Resolution AP(2005)2 is not appropriate in its present form, the European Printing Ink Association (EuPIA) has produced a Guideline on Printing Inks applied to the non-food contact surface of food packaging materials and articles and an inventory list of packaging inks raw materials applied to the non-food contact surface of food packaging. The documents can be downloaded from the EuPIA website (www.eupia.org ).
