New road
ordinance
addresses
safety
By NICK COHEN
The Shamong Sun
The residents of Grassy Lake
Road have seen progress in their
effort to make the road safer. Now
an ordinance has been intro-
duced that will go even further
toward achieving that goal.
At a township council meeting
on June 5, a new regulation was
passed to make the section of
Grassy Lake Road between Indi-
an Mills Road and Stokes Road a
no passing zone.
The township engineer had
been reviewing options the coun-
cil could enact quickly to appease
resident concerns.
Initially, the township had
posted several temporary red and
white 25 mph signs on the road
and placed a speed monitoring as
well as a driver feedback device.
The Sun previously reported
that at a township meeting on
May 7, residents of Grassy Lake
Road came out in full force to
make a plea for safer conditions
in their neighborhood. Residents
had said they regularly wit-

Burlington County College re-
cently announced that it has been
awarded more than $4.5 million
from the state for its proposed cap-
ital and equipment projects.
Gov. Christie and the Secretary
of Higher Education Rochelle
Hendricks announced the list of
the 176 approved higher education
state-supported bond projects sent
to the Legislature. All of BCCs
projects were among those ap-
proved.
I am very pleased that the col-
lege will be receiving these state
funds for much needed technolo-
gy upgrades, said Burlington
County Freeholder Director Joe
Donnelly. We look forward to
working with the college to assure
that our students have the latest
educational resources to help
them succeed.
To help the college secure the
grant funding from the state, the
Burlington County Board of Cho-
sen Freeholders, under the advice
of Donnelly, agreed to match
funds up to $500,000 for the tech-
nology projects.
I would like to thank Gov.
Christie for his support of higher
education and especially county
colleges through the funding of
these grants, said Donnelly.
The projects, which include the
Next Generation Enterprise Net-
work, Next Generation Educa-
tional Technology Project, and
Center for the Advancement of
Science and Technology, will be
funded through three state-sup-
ported bond programs adminis-
tered by the New Jersey Educa-
College awarded funds

nessed cars driving more than 15
mph over the posted speed limit.
They also reported several inci-
dents of trees and lawns being
damaged by drivers losing con-
trol of their vehicles due to exces-
sive speeding.
They claimed that walking or
bike riding near their homes had
become impossible.
In speaking with residents,
they appreciate the steps the
township has taken so far.
They praised the quick re-
sponse the council had in getting
the speed-monitoring device on
Grassy Lake Road and for the en-
gineers evaluation.
They do feel that there is still
work to be done and it may only
come with a strong enforcement
push from the State Police.
In other news
The council also intro-
duced new legislation to estab-
lish and update certain fees.
The Sun previously reported
that additional fees the township
would consider include the sell-
ing of alcohol, road-opening fees,
escrow, solicitation permit fees,
rabies clinic fees and animal li-
censing fees. Shamong currently
charges $360 a year for
establishments serving alcohol
and $330 a year for the liquor
store.
The township had discussions
to work on the possibility of
charging businesses incremen-
tally over a number of years
until the state maximum is
reached. In some cases, the exist-
ing fees have not been changed
for 20-30 years.
The township will use a
grant from the Department of
Transportation to complete the
repaving project of Old Indian
Mills Road. The council now has
approval to advertise for bids.
Second readings and public
comments for both of these
ordinances will take place at the
next township council meeting
currently scheduled for Wednes-
day, July 10.

The Shamong Sun
On June 4, Indian Mills Ele-
mentary School welcomed state
Department of Education Com-
missioner Christopher Cerf.
As commissioner of education
Cerf oversees 2,500 public
schools, 1.4 million students, and
110,000 teachers in more than 600
school districts throughout New
Jersey. Needless to say, face time
with the commissioner is at a pre-
mium, especially for a smaller
school like Indian Mills.
Were lucky to have had him
here, school board president
Melissa Ciliberti said. We only
had a limited amount of time
with him but I definitely think we
made an impact.
Cerf mentioned that he had
wanted to take time to tour some
of the schools in Burlington
County that may not have gotten
the attention in years past. Sha-
mong School District wanted to
ensure it used his time effectively.
We wanted to show him some- thing that we were really proud
of, and for us that has definitely
been our full-day kindergarten
program, interim superintend-
ent Dolores Szymanski said. We
know they have a strong desire to
have the kids entrenched in their
schools and full-day kindergarten
helps with that.
Along with Cerf were, execu-
tive director of the school board
association Larry Seinsod, presi-
dent of the New Jersey school
boards association John Bulina,
and state board of education
member Joseph Fisicaro. The
group stayed for a presentation
made by kindergarten teacher
Theresa Gibbons.
Gibbons presentation focused
on the life cycle of a butterfly and
integrated both science and read-
ing projects as well as lessons the
children had learned throughout
the year.
It was an extremely upbeat
and energetic presentation,
Ciliberti said. It was fun for the
kids. They definitely enjoyed it.
The visit was arranged by
members of the state board of ed-
ucation to see the highlights of
what the school had been working
on this past year. Cerf was at Indi-
an Mills for more than 30 minutes
before departing to visit Seneca
High School. He had come from
visiting schools in Evesham
Township.
Ciliberti said that Cerf did not
say much during his visit, using
the time to observe the students
and what they were working on.
Its a great opportunity for a
little school like ours, Ciliberti
said. Helps put us on the map, so
to speak.

T
he late U.S. Sen. Frank Lauten-
berg wasnt even in his grave
yet, when the political maneu-
vering began.
The death of the 89-year-old New
Jersey Democrat on June 3 presented
Gov. Christie with several options, but
he has chosen one that will cost tax-
payers wallets dearly. Instead of al-
lowing voters to choose Lautenbergs
successor in the Nov. 5 general elec-
tion, hes ordering a special election
less than three weeks before on
Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The cost of an Aug. 13 primary and
an Oct. 16 special election is $24 mil-
lion. Since the governor has already
chosen New Jersey Attorney General
Jeff Chiesa as the interim replace-
ment, we wonder whats the harm in
saving taxpayers a bundle by allowing
Chiesa to hang on to the job three
weeks longer so that the cost of a spe-
cial election can be avoided. Democra-
cy is priceless, but is something else
going on here?
State Sen. Barbara Buono, whose
gubernatorial campaign against
Christie might have benefited from the
coattails of a strong Democratic U.S.
Senate candidate on the same Nov. 5
ballot, wasted no time taking the offen-
sive.
Earlier this year, the governor
cited money as to why he vetoed early
voting, Buono said in a press state-
ment, referring to Christies May 9
veto of legislation that would have let
people cast ballots during a 15-day pe-
riod before Election Day. However, de-
spite costing millions of dollars, Gov.
Christie made the cynical and arro-
gant decision to call a special election
in October.
Buono may not be without her own
political motives in this controversy,
but she makes a valid point.
As the governor, Christie has the
right to take advantage of the power of
his position, and he did just that. We
just wish it wasnt costing so much.
Christies costly move
Special election for Lautenbergs replacement will cost $24M

College reflects success of baseball, softball season
With the end of softball and baseball sea-
son, Burlington County College reflects on
the successes of the Barons and a major
first for the BCC softball team.
The ladies secured the first National
Junior College Athletic Association Divi-
sion II Softball National Championship
berth in BCCs history and the baseball
team captured the Region XIX Division II
runner-up position with two impressive
wins in the tournament.
Both teams had players named to the All-
Region and All-Conference teams this year
and the ladies had an All-American.
For the Lady Barons, the win at the
NJCAA Region XIX Division II Women's
Softball Tournament earned them a spot at
the National Championship in Clinton,
Miss. for the first time in BCCs softball
team history. The ladies played well in the
championship against the other 16 commu-
nity colleges, but ultimately did not bring
home the championship.
On May 15, the ladies played No. 2 seed
Phoenix College and were defeated 9-1.
The team played the elimination game
on May 16 and lost 12-4 against No. 10 seed
Sauk Valley Community College. No. 1 seed
Louisiana State University Eunice brought
home the championship title. Melissa
Rustemeyer of Colonia was one of 13
women in the nation named to the NJCAA
Division II Softball Second Team All-Amer-
ican. She is ranked 16th in the nation for
home runs and 40th in the nation for RBIs.
Rustemeyer, along with Krystine Rice of
Marlton, were named to First Team All-Re-
gion and First Team All-Garden State Ath-
letic Conference for Division II softball.
Gina Gryniuk of Marlton and Krystal Pear-
son of Sayersville were named to Second
Team All-Region and First Team All-GSAC.
Lisa Kosteleski of Cherry Hill, Taylor
Hamliton of Willingboro, and Carolyn Grif-
fin of Marlton made Second Team All-
GSAC. Griffin, a pitcher, was also recog-
nized as the Region XIX Division II
Women's Softball Tournament MVP.
The mens baseball team entered the re-
gion tournament as the No. 3 seed and de-
feated No. 2 seed Lackawanna College 2-1
and No. 1 seed Mercer County Community
College 2-0 on May 10.
They advanced to the finals on May 12
and fell 9-10 and 12-13 to Lackawanna. They
ended the season as Region XIX Division II
baseball runner-ups with a 17-27 overall
record. DeVon Hedgepeth of Mount Holly
and Eddie Stiles of Lumberton were named
to First Team All-GSAC and Second Team
All-Region for Division II Baseball. Taylor
Place, a South Carolina native, made Sec-
ond Team All-GSAC.

and transfer to four-year institu-
tions and premier research uni-
versities with sophisticated and
state-of-the art programs.
BCC received a total of
$4,573,881 from three state-sup-
ported bond programs including
the Higher Education Technology
Infrastructure Fund, Higher Edu-
cation Equipment Leasing Fund
and Higher Education Facilities
Trust Fund.
Through the funding, BCC will
upgrade the colleges technology
infrastructure, provide better ac-
cess to instructional technology
and resources in the classrooms
and establish a science and tech-
nology center in the Lewis M.
Parker Center, located on the Pem-
berton Campus.
The HETI funds and a $500,000
grant from the County will go to-
ward BCCs NGEN project, which
will provide the necessary tech-
nology foundation needed to sup-
port the continued growth of stu-
dent, faculty, and staff-based voice,
video and data traffic on BCCs
network. BCCs existing network
infrastructure at its primary loca-
tions, Pemberton and Mount Lau-
rel, is nearly 9 years old and can-
not compete with the network
technology available today. The
NGEN project will replace the ex-
isting core and edge network
switches, as well as the existing
wireless network access points.
Leveraging BCCs NGEN, stu-
dents and faculty will reap the
benefits of a true digital learning
environment with increased
bandwidth, faster network and ap-
plication response, and seamless
Bring Your Own Device support.
