Political Composition Per Executive Order 36 issued on September 19, 2001. Region XII now includes the provinces of Cotabato, Saranggani, South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat, and the cities of Cotabato, General Santos, Kidapawan, Koronadal and Tacurong Land Area Region XII has a total land area of 19,196.57 sq. km., which is about 18.5% of the total land area of Mindanao. Among the four provinces of the region, Cotabato has the biggest land area at 6,019.78 sq. km., which is about 30.4% of the regions land area. The smallest among the provinces is Sultan Kudarat with a land area of 4,401.06 sq. km. Among the five cities of the region, General Santos City has the biggest land area at 668.49 sq. km., with Tacurong City as the smallest with a land area of 161.96 sq. km. Population The population of Region XII in 2000 was 3.222 million persons. This was almost 18% of the Mindanao total population. The average annual population growth rate from 1995 to 2000 was placed at 2.68%. The population density of Region XII increased from 138 in 1995 to 168 persons per square kilometer in 2000. Cotabato City and General Santos City are the most densely populated areas in the region. The population density of these areas was 1,108 and 616 persons per sq. km., respectively in 2000. Transportation The region has a relatively well-developed transportation system, which is critical in strengthening its ties with other economic growth centers in other parts of the country and the world. It is served by an international airport located in General Santos City and a trunk line airport in Awang, Maguindanao. The port of General Santos City is the biggest seaport of the region, which was categorized as port of entry, and caters to large inter-island vessels for passengers and cargo. It also accommodates international vessels from Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. The region has one sub-port located in Cotabato City and 2 municipal ports located in Kalamansig and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat Province. Communication Aside from the transportation network, the region is linked with the rest of the world via modern telecommunications facilities. Major private telephone carriers are serving the region, such as the PLDT, Bayantel, Smart and Globe, among others. Cellular sites, as well as, Internet service providers, are generally present in urban centers of the region. However, it is recognized that these services should also reach the rural areas for increased accessibility to centers of economic growth.

Economy Region XII is endowed with rich natural resources and has the potential of becoming one of the fastest growing regional economies in the country. The provinces of South Cotabato, Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat, as well as, General Santos City (SOCSKSARGEN), had been provided with modern infrastructure support under SOCSKSARGEN Area Development Project. The province of Cotabato and neighboring provinces are recipients of the Malitubog-Maridagao Irrigation Project. All these initiatives were meant to support agricultural activities in the region as a major food supplier to domestic and export markets. The cities of Cotabato and General Santos serve as the regions major financial, business, institutional, education and service centers. The economy of the region grew at a slower pace of 2.3 percent in 2005 from a 5.8 percent growth in 2004. The deceleration in the 2005 economic performance was largely attributed to the slump in Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry (AFF).

Major Crops Rice, Corn, Coconut, Pineapple, Asparagus, Cassava, Sugar, Banana and Rubber The total value of investments generated in the first semester of 2006 amounted to P2.767 Billion, or 7.3 percent higher than last years record of P2.578 Billion. The total export earnings of the region in the first semester of 2006 was US$177.1225 Million, which grew by 6.8 percent compared with last years earnings of US$165.876 Million. Gen. A considerable increase in visitor arrivals by about 36 percent was noted from 299,492 visitors in the first semester of last year to 407,041 visitors this semester. The average inflation rate for the first semester of 2006 dropped to 6.0 percent, reflecting a decrease of 1.9 percentage points from last years estimate of 7.9 percent. Employment rate during the period was estimated at 94.1 percent, which translated to a total of 1.498 million employed persons. Underemployment rate was estimated at 29.7 percent or a total

of 445,000 persons.

Geography
SOCCSKSARGEN is also known as Region XII. Its name is an amalgamation of the names of the 4 provinces that make up the region. They are SOuth Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and SARangani plus the city of GENeral Santos. It is located in the southern part of Mindanao. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of Lanao Del Sur and Bukidnon, on the east by Davao Del Sur, on the south by Mindanao Sea, and on the west by the province of Maguindanao. Hills and mountains make up most of Sarangani, South Cotabato, western Sultan Kudarat, and the northeastern part of North Cotabato. The eastern part of Sultan Kudarat and the southwestern part of North Kudarat are part of the vast plain of central Mindanao. Highest peak is 2,958-meter Mt. Apo in the boundary of North Cotabato and Davao Del Sur. Other notable mountains in the region are: Mt. Matumtum (2,293 meters) in South Cotabato, Mt. Busa (2,083 meters) also in South Cotabato, Mt. Latian (1,612 meter) in Sarangani, Mt. Magolo (1,450 meter) again in South Cotabato, and Mt. Tianlud (1,220 meter) in North Cotabato. Lake Buluan in Sultan Kudarat and Lake Sebu and Lake Maughan both in South Cotabato are the well-known lakes in the region. Sarangani and the southern part of South Cotabato receives rainfall more or less evenly throughout the year while in the other parts of the region, seasons are not very pronounced but it is relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.

People
Like Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN is home to many cultural groups. Among them are the Cebuanos, Hiligaynons, Ilocanos, Tagalogs, Manobos, Tirurays, Maguindanaos, and Maranaos.

Economic Profile
The main economic activity in the region is agriculture. The chief products are rice, corn, coconut, banana, and pineapple. Rubber, sugarcane, and coffee are also grown in the area. Poultry, hog and cattle raising are widely done as an alternative source of income. Being the tuna capital of the country, fishing is a multimillion industry and tuna has become the chief export product of the region. Manufacturing consists mainly of processing farm outputs such as rice and corn milling, tuna canning, pineapple canning and rubber processing. The region contributed more than 3% to the national economy, the 8th largest, not bad considering the peace and order image problem of the region in particular and ofMindanao in general. 'Hinugyaw' is an Ilonggo term for merrymaking. During the last week of August until September 1 every year, the province of North Cotabato celebrates the Annual Foundation Day. This boisterous celebration has become known as the Hinugyaw sa Cotabato. Activities include the Hinugyaw sa Kalsada which is actually an ethnic dance parade of people wearing colorful costumes. The agro-industrual fair showcases the province's major products such as tropical fruits and exotic plants, furniture, handicrafts, and food products. Hightlight of the celebration is the search for the Mutya ng North Cotabato. Simultaneous with the Hinugyaw celebration is the Kavurunan Festival. It is a sports competition which includes traditional games and is participated by all the ethnic groups in

the province. The aim of the festival is to Unite all the people despite the inherent diverty in culture and tradition.

SoCCSKSarGen is an acronym that stands for the following provinces and one of its cities: South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City. Region XII or SoCCSKSarGen is located in central Mindanao and covered a total land area of 22,466 km2 with a total number population of 3,829,081 (as of 2007).

The region has a total number of 5 Cities, 45 Municipalities, and 1,194 Barangays. The regional center is located at the province of South Cotabato and it is Koronadal City. Cotabato City is an independent province in the region, though in nature its within the boundaries of Maguindanao, still it is part of SOCCSKSARGEN. The province of Manguindanao and Cotabato City is once part of the original Cotabato province. Region XII has wide-range of seashore, valleys and mountain ranges. Most of the people living in the regions are Muslim and a few others like Christian and a group of Maranao. The dialect spoken is varied within the region like in Cotabato City is the only province that spokes Tagalog, while other dialect is English, Cebuano, Tboli, Blaan, Cotabato Manobo, Tagabanwa, Hiligaynon, Manguidanao.

The region is known for its river structure that is why it is also called as the catch basin of Mindanao. This is structure is a very good source of food and potable water and energy supply. The soil of this region is suitable for a variety of crops like banana, coffee, nuits, cabbage, potato, beans, coconut, abaca and other good vegetables. The regions means of living is agri and fishery and they harvest abundantly of rice and corn.

The rice supply is come from this region and it is also known as Kamalig ng Palay sa Mindanao. Fishing is great in the region and is a quick growing industry. First-class tuna and tuna products are came from the region and exported to Japan, Europe and other country. Cottage industries such as rattan, woodcrafts also played importance rules in terms of economic activities. Industrial business includes logging, African oil palm extraction plant, feed-mill, rice bran oil extraction plant and refinery.

Lots of attractive and striking beauty of places can be found in the region. The tourist attraction, which the region can, offers to the visitor. Places to go especially during at its peak of abundant season the Lazones Forest, the Fishport complex in Gen. Santos City, the Kalaja Eco-Tourism destination, Maitum Cave and many others.

Going to the region is not a problem since it is accessible by air, land or sea. In General Santos City base the second largest airport in area and had one of the most moderate seaport in the country. The regions provide easy access to the key cities of the Philippines. Traveling by air is not a problem the General Santos International Airport is the major Airport in Mindanao. It is capable in managing spacious bodied jets like Airbus 340 and Boeing 747.

It caters direct flights to Manila and Cebu via Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific. Reaching the region by sea is also best way to travel seaport always welcome the visitor. Shipping lines like WG & A, Negros Navigation and Sulpicio Lines provide the route. Inbound and around the region land travel is a fast and handy ride. Shariff Kabunsuan An Arab missionary landed along the banks of Rio Grande de Mindanao and introduced Islam to the natives.
