All the way from India

The Ancient Romans were intrigued with entertainment; in fact, they felt that the most important part of their day was an evening at the Coliseum events. There were gladiator battles, naval ship battles, chariot races, and animal fights. People typically showed up for the evening shows where exotic creatures from around the world show their strength against a human or another beast. Every year, hundreds of animals were shipped to the Coliseum; whether they were from Asia or Africa. Most of them were large cats. Lions were the trademark, but occasionally there would be a tiger or leopard tossed in the mix. One such voyage brought back to Europe the most influential tiger of all time. Her name was Tigress. She was born in the Indian jungle. Her mother, Dandi, had experience with the Romans who came to India once a year. She had lost her first litter of cubs that way. Out of wisdom, she saw it necessary to be over protective of Tigress, never letting her out of sight and always fight ferociously if something should threaten her. The poachers arrived at the southern tip of India where they typically found most of their game. Tigers often stay close to the water, but once they saw the boat, they quickly scattered deep into the jungle. Dandi was among one of them. She was down there giving Tigress a bath when she saw the humans coming. Unfortunately, she found herself cornered between the bottom of a cliff and the poachers. Dandi was absolutely helpless. The men knocked her out by clubbing her on the forehead. Then they brought her and Tigress to the boat where they were thrown below deck with the rest of the animals. The boat had returned to Rome three months later. Nearly starving from their journey, Dandi and Tigress got their first glimpse of Europe; rocky, isolated, and full of people. Dandi feared that such a human-infested environment would endanger her cub. Brutus, the game keeper at the Coliseum, came over to the dock to inspect his shipments. Are these my new beasts? Yes sir, one of the poachers replied. All the way from India. In this crate, we have a healthy mother tiger and her young female cub. Brutus peeked inside. Healthy? You can see their ribs. Didnt you feed them during you sail? Of coarse, but they barely touched the meat we gave them. They better get use to it, because they wont be served fresh meat. Take them to the Coliseum and settled them down in their own cell in the chambers. Make sure you leave cells for the lions that Im expecting. When are the African ships due, sir? They should be arriving today. If not, tomorrow. At this point, Dandi was losing it. The men were careful not to let her out until the crate was securely inside the cell. When they let out however, she was frozen with fear. One of the gladiators had to force her and Tigress out of the crate so they could proceed with the other animals. Tigress was confused. Where are we, mommy? I dont know, dear.

I dont see any trees, and where are all the other tigers? Were not in the jungle anymore. Were in the human world. There are no trees, and there are no other tigers. Realizing their situation, Tigress planted herself into Dandis warm tummy. This place is scary. I want to go home. I do too, sweetie. Theres nothing I can do to help you this time.

Felix rescues Tigress

The new African animals that arrived shortly after Dandi and Tigress were two lions: Titan and Bellona. Titan was larger than the average sized male, and Bellona was more vicious than five hyenas during a feeding frenzy. Since the Romans praised lions, these two were what was known as the public favorites. One day, Dandi was dragged out into the arena to face Titan. The crowd cheered wildly as the two cats embroiled. It didnt take long until the skirmish became a blood bath. Titan and Dandi were both mortally wounded, and neither of them could be spared. Brutus had a dilemma on his hands; Tigress was too young to survive without her mother. No one had the time or patience to care for her, so he had a decision to make. Instead of experimenting whether or not she would survive without a mother, he decided to put her down. Arbus, could I see you for a minute? he summoned one of his soldiers. What is it sir? There is some business that needs to be taken care of. The little tiger cub cant survive without her mother. If we dont do something now, the poor thing will die of starvation or disease. What do you have in mind? Take her to the back room. You can figure out the rest. Very well sir. Arbus opened the door to Tigress cell, lifted her with one hand, and brought her to what most animals call the door of no return. He tied her up and aimed a crossbow at her chest. Thats when another gladiator came into the room in search of his uniform. He was stunned to see his colleague getting ready to kill a helpless infant. What is the meaning of this? Damn it Felix! Cant you see Im busy? Go back to the palace where you belong and leave us peasants to do our business. Why are you going to kill that cub? What did it ever do to you? Brutus told me to do it. Its mother was killed during this mornings fight. Felix stepped in front of the crossbow. Youre not killing this cub. Get out of the way! I have a job to do! Then youll just have to quit. Im not letting you kill this innocent creature just because Brutus told you to do so. Excuse me, but it will die anyway. What makes you so sure? Animals cant be without their mother at a certain age. This cub is far too young to be uncared for. Have any bright ideas, or can I proceed?

It was debatable whether or not to put Tigress down, but Felix couldnt find it in his heart to let a cub die before it even had a chance at life. Let me take her. What are you going to do with a cub? Youll be too busy protecting the royal family to take care of a wild family. I wont be responsible for the cub, but the princess will. Like she would want a filthy animal. She loves animals. Do you really believe the king will fall for such a proposition? I dont know, but he will let his daughter have anything she wants. If she truly wants to take care of the cub, then hell have no reason to stop her. Besides, today is her eleventh birthday, and it will be the perfect present for her. You better tell Brutus before you just waltz out of here with her. Believe me I will. Brutus was dumbfounded when Felix told him that he was going to give Tigress to the princess as a gift. Princess Alana wont be able to raise this tiger as its mother. Animals have special needs that humans cant give them. This is a bad idea. Please sir, just let me give the cub to her and see what happens. Who knows, it will probably grow up to be a healthy, powerful tiger. I still dont think it will work, but if it does, would you promise me that it will return to my Coliseum once its strong enough to fight? I wont be robbed if the damn creature somehow pulls through. I dont know sir Youre job is not to think, its to follow orders. If you cant make a deal, then I order you to bring it back to me if it lives. Yes sir. I want it back here the moment it transforms into a behemoth tiger. Felix didnt know how to comment on Brutus request. He did know that Alana would get attached to Tigress, and that it would be heartbreaking to separate them.

Alanas surprise
Alana was a gentle girl who loved all living things; big and small, dumb and wise, and furry and feathered. For her birthday, she received jewelry, gowns, and sandals. They didnt please her as much as Felixs gift. She was sitting in the throne room with her parents when he brought forth the tiger cub. King Antoine tilted his head, for he couldnt come up with an explanation as to why one of his guards was walking around with an animal cradled in his arms. Why do you bring a tiger into my palace? It belongs in the Coliseum. Sir, hear me out. Brutus ordered this cub to be killed because it has no mother. Its too young to survive on its own. Then why do you bring it here? Its for Alana. This is my gift to her. Alanas eyes lit up. Oh daddy, can I have her! Shes so adorable!

Silence! Felix, I dont think giving my daughter a tiger would be considered a gift. Theyre dangerous! Bringing that thing in here has endangered us all! Its only a baby. Babies grow up, and it may even form a taste for humans. Sir, this cub didnt do anything to deserve a death sentence. All I ask is to give it a chance, and maybe it will grow up to be friendly. Antoine looked at Alana. Her hands were folded and her bottom lip was extended. Please dad. Please Alright, you win. Thank you daddy! I promise Ill take good care of her! Felix, I want you to help Alana in raising this cub, make sure nothing goes wrongs with its health. Yes my Lord and Lady, Felix said as he put Tigress down. Thank you so much, Felix. Shes the best gift anyone has ever gotten me, Alana said. Youre welcome princess, and happy birthday.

The bad news

Alana immediately took Tigress out into the garden to play. They romped around the rose bed, playing hide n seek among the statues and fountains, and gazed at the clouds to see what shapes they could discern. Antoine and queen Attina stood at the entrance gate watching their daughter enjoying her new best friend. Ive never seen her so happy, Attina commented. Yeah. She really loves that little tiger. We should leave them in peace, let them bond. I dont think they need to take much more time in doing so. Id say theyve already bonded. Arent you glad your daughter finally has a friend she could play with? After all, she has lived eleven years without one. Of coarse Im happy. Theres just something inside me that says this is a bad idea. What if the tigers animal instincts kick in and she becomes blood thirsty? I wouldnt worry too much about that, especially now. Let the girls enjoy the time they have together while it lasts. As they laid back in the grass, Alana started talking as if she was having a conversation with another person. Tigress listened attentively. You know Tigress; Ive never known what it was like to have fun with someone. I never had any friends or siblings to hang around with. Not to mention that there is no one I can really talk to. My parents never understand the things I want to share with them. Felix came into the garden. Good afternoon princess. Just thought Id come by and give tigress her lunch. How has your day been? Are you two having fun? Tons of fun! Weve been playing for hours! Good to know. He tossed down a piece of meat and Tigress tore into it. So, what have you been doing for so many hours?

Just goof off. Theres nothing more exciting than roughing it in the garden. You really are becoming attached to Tigress, arent you? Yes sir. Shes my best friend. I couldnt imagine having a better one. I can tell her anything; my secrets, my fears, and my dreams. She seems to understand me. Listen, I need to tell you something. What is it? Felix wasnt yet ready to tell Alana about the deal he made with Brutus. Never mind, its not relevant right now. Please tell me No. Forget about it. Ill tell you some other time. Where are you going? Im going back to my post. You and Tigress continue having fun. Alright. Ill talk to you later. Alana waved Felix goodbye and then turned to Tigress. Gosh, I wonder what that was all about. He looked upset when he was getting ready to tell mewhatever he was going to say. Like he said, its probably nothing important if he didnt have time to tell me. Antoine and Attina were in the lounge when Felix returned. Did Tigress enjoy her meal? Attina asked. Yes my Lady. Can I talk to you two in private? The looked at each other with confusion. Is there something wrong? Yes, and it has to do with Tigress. What did she do? Is Alana okay? Antoine asked. Yes sir. Its something else important. Please, could we go somewhere private? Of coarse Felix. Well go into the bedroom chamber. The maids should be finished making the beds by now. The three settled down behind closed doors. Not a butler or made was in sight. Okay Felix, tell us the situation with Tigress, Attina said. Theres something I shouldve mentioned to you before I gave her to Alana, but I didnt want to break the poor girls heart. Brutus, the game keeper, asked me to return Tigress back as soon as she grows up. I thought you said he was the one who tried to kill her. True, but that was only because he didnt think she would survive. If Alana and I successfully raise Tigress, shell become strong, which would be perfect fighting material in the Coliseum tournaments. Do you honestly believe she would have those killer instincts if shes pampered like a palace pet? Antoine asked. I dont know, but she will still be powerful enough to proof her worthy. You cant take Tigress away! Alana has already too attached! Attina cried. Thats why I could bare tell her. So you think its wise to leave it till the last minute? Thats not it at all! I was going to tell her, but she and Tigress were too busy having fun. I have to schedule the perfect moment to tell her the bad news. You better tell her soon before they become inseparable, Antoine added. Yes sir. Ill make sure I tell her before its too late.

Negotiating with Brutus

Of coarse Felix never told Alana. Tigress grew up just as predicted, and she was the strong, healthy tiger that Brutus said she would be. The bond between her and Alana was ten times stronger than when she was a cub. They continued to play in the garden, and Tigress was big enough to act like a giant, plush toy for Alana to cuddle with. Antoine, Attina, and Felix were worried; not only did Alana not know about the bad news, but Tigress was too gentle to be Coliseum material. This isnt good, Felix said. We cant separate them now. Its all your fault! Attina replied. If you had told Alana a year ago like you shouldve, they wouldnt be so close! Now we cant do anything about it! I know! Every time I tried to talk to her, she would be holding Tigress close to her chest like a fluffy pillow. I couldnt tell her. They were meant for each other. You shouldve thought about that before you gave her as a gift! Brutus didnt make the deal with me until I was almost out the door. I couldnt avoid it no matter how hard I tried. He wouldnt let me take Tigress if I didnt make the promise. Im sorry; this has all gone too far. You have to tell her now, Antoine said. Alright, Ill do it. Felix went into the garden slowly. He cleared his throat to get Alanas attention. Can I talk to you, princess? Of coarse. What is it, Felix? Do you have something for Tigress? No, not right now. I needed to tell you something important, so I need your undivided attention. Tigress, go run around for a bit. Felix and I need to discuss something. Tigress disappeared into the vegetation. Alright Felix, now we can talk. She needs to continue running around to stretch her legs. Weve been relaxing for a while. Theres something Ive shouldve told you the moment I gave you Tigress. Brutus, my other boss at the Coliseum, told me I had to bring back Tigress once she became an adult. What? Alana started hyperventilating. Im sorry; I didnt have the heart to tell you. Wait a minute! You said Brutus wanted to kill Tigress! Why would he want her back? She belongs with me! Shes an adult now, and adult animals need to be in the Coliseum. Shes too big to lounge around the palace anymore. Its also dangerous; she could revert back to her wild behavior if you keep her. Why is locking her up any different? She deserves to be free and live in the lap of luxury! Calm down No, I wont calm down! I will never let Tigress go! Alana stormed off, and Felix stayed seated on the stone wall. Attina came by. I had a feeling she wouldnt take it well. I wish there was someway I can allow her to keep Tigress. I will have a talk with Brutus. Im the queen after all. If I tell him that my daughter deserves to keep Tigress, then he must obey my orders. Trust me; Ill take care of this.

Attina marched straight to the Coliseums animal storage where Brutus and the other guards were tending theyre freshly caught game. They all bowed down as soon as they saw her. What a pleasant surprise, my Lady. To what do I owe this wonderful visit? Brutus asked as he groveled. I need to speak to you about Tigress. The little tiger cub I gave Felix for your daughters birthday? Thats the one. In that case, have a seat. Whats the little tyke been up to? I hear you want her back? Is she all grown up and strong enough to withstand a battle? Yes. Then youve heard correctly. I would like to have her back. Thats not fair! You gave her to Felix! My daughter has grown attached to the gentle creature! Youre not taking her back! Madam, I wont be chiseled out of having my set of tigers. Im one short for the tournament and your pet will make an excellent addition. Im the queen, and you are the citizen! You have to do what I tell you, and I want to keep Tigress so that my daughter wont be broken hearted! As you wish, my Lady. You can keep the tiger. If anything should go wrong, feel free to send the brute here. I appreciate your understanding, Brutus. You may proceed with your work. I trust Tigress will have no reason to come to this awful place. Alana and Tigress were still outside when Attina approached them. Dear, do you have a minute? Yes mother. I just want you to know that everything is settled with Tigress. I talked to Brutus, and he ha agreed to let you keep her. Really? You mean it? Yes dear. You wont have to worry about giving her up anymore. Thats wonderful news! Thanks mom! Antoine overheard everything. He appeared out of nowhere and startled Attina. So, Brutus says that Tigress can stay with us? Honey, you scared me. Where were you? Ive been out here making sure the girls dont get into trouble. Dont think I didnt notice that you were nowhere in the palace. Felix said that you were going to the Coliseum this afternoon to straighten things out. You better believe it. He told me that Alana can keep Tigress. Unfortunately there was one little detail I didnt mention. Let me guess, he still wants Tigress and formulated a plan to end up with her if something should happen? Precisely. He said that if there are any disciplinary trouble, Tigress should be sent to his little zoo as soon as possible. Just goes to show that hes not about to give up. He still wants her badly. I told him he had to do what I say since Im the queen. Im just relieved that we wont have to worry about prying Tigress away.

Something could still happen within that time. What do you mean? Shes still a wild animal, no matter how pampered she is. Alana has spoiled her so much with love that she has become more of a house cat than a tiger. Shes too gentle to be wild. I hope youre right.

Tigress snaps
A group of wealthy merchants visited the palace one evening. Antoine and Attina invited them for an annual feast where they would enjoy sophisticated dining and conversation. For the first time, Alana would have to act more like an adult. She was taught how to eat, sit, and talk properly among the other adults. Remember dear to be engaged in our conversations. Youre a young lady now. Mom, could Tigress attend dinner with us? Maybe our visitors would love to see how friendly she is. I dont think its such a good idea. People dont normally want an animal around theyre food. We do it all the time. I know dear, but thats because we understand that Tigress is part of the family. Weve been through this last year. If Tigress is a member of the family, then she deserves to be part of our activities. She deserves to know who we will be associating with. Dear, youre missing the point Okay, I wont bring her to dinner. Will Felix giver her food while were gone? Hes working with Brutus right now, and I dont think hell be back until morning. We can save some scraps from the table. Tigress was bewildered when she was left outside without anything to eat. She could hear the laughter coming from the dining hall, and she could smell the delicious cuisine the palace guests were being served. One of the servants opened the door to check on Tigress. It was the perfect opportunity for her to scoot back inside and raid the dinner table. Needless to say, the guests were frightened. They hid under the table while Tigress stuffed her face. She ate from everyones plates and even gulped down their desert. Antoine was furious. Tigress! Get off the table right now! You dont have to yell at her dad! Alana screamed. Shes ruining our evening with the merchants! He grabbed her firmly by the loose skin behind her neck and tried to force her off the table. Tigress roared loudly and refused to obey further commands. Tigress! Alana tried to calm her down, but she didnt listen. She continued with her rampage. Daddy whats wrong with her? Why is she acting like this? Its her wild instincts! This is what happens when you try to take care of a tiger; they turn on you.

Felix and Brutus were summoned to the palace. When they got to the dining room, they saw the people taking shelter from Tigress fierce rampage. Thank God youre here, Attina said. Restrain that animal and take her away! With pleasure, Brutus smiled sinisterly as he rallied up some of his other soldiers and prepared to captivate Tigress. Alana tried to stop them. Dont hurt her! Felix had to pull her back. Princess, let Brutus take her in. Shes no longer safe to have around the palace. No! She just panicked! Its my fault; I shouldve fed her before the feast. Now shes out of control! Alana! Settle down! Please dont take her away! Shes the only friend I have! Tigress mind came back to reality, and she realized her mistake. However, it was too late. Brutus and the soldiers tied her down and took her to the Coliseum where she was thrown into a small, damp cell like a criminal. She didnt understand why she snapped; all she knew was that she was sorry. Alana was in tears. How could you let them take her away, Felix? You know she wasnt acting like herself. Im sorry Alana, but you cant afford to keep her anymore. She could go into a more dangerous rampage in the future. Consider yourself lucky that no one was killed. Alana, you need to let Tigress go. I had a feeling this day would come; I just didnt imagine it would take place during our annual dinner with the merchants, Antoine said. Its not fair! You treated her like dirt! Will I ever see her again? Oh honey, I dont think thats a good idea, Attina answered. But shes probably scared to death by now. I think you better let her cool off before you visit her. The guests came out from under the table. How could you harbor a tiger in your palace? one man asked. The important thing is that its safe now. Pardon us your highness, but I think we better go. This has been too much for me to handle, a woman added. That was the last the merchants ever went to the palace. Antoine and Attina were furious. Young lady, go to your room, Antoine screamed. What did I do?! Alana yelled back. You never raise your voice to your parents. Now go to your room and think about how irrational youre behaving. Alana ran upstairs to the bedroom chambers without saying another word. Dear, why did you have to shout at her like that? She needs to learn to respect her parents. Raising her voice to us is not acceptable. She was just upset because she lost her best friend. If I recall correctly, youre the one who ordered Brutus to take her away. Yes, but I was only trying to protect everyone. I wont be able to sleep tonight because of it.

Im going to have a hard time too. I knew bringing that animal into our family was a mistake, and now we must live with the consequences. It breaks my heart to see Alana like this. Theres nothing I can do about it though.

A strange place
Tigress circled around the cell trying to figure a way to escape. She chewed on the bars and pawed at the ground repeatedly. The other animals were becoming agitated with all the she was making. Keep it down over there! a hyena yelled. Some of us are trying to sleep. Im sorry, but Im trying to get out of this cell, Tigress replied. Weve all tried, but every attempt is a fail. You might as well give up and wait for the humans to decide your fate. Truth of the matter is that I belong to the human, and I have to get back to her. I dont belong here. None of us do. Did you say you belong to a human? another voice emerged from the cell next to Tigress. Inside was Bellona, the widow lioness. Yes. Her name is princess Alana. A princess? Figures. Whats that mean? Dont any of you belong to humans? We dont belong to anyone; were all on our own. It figures that a prissy tiger would be living large in a cozy palace. Im not a prissy tiger! I cant stand your species! Tigers are all alike! You think youre so much better than us. Thats not true! I dont believe that! Save your lies! Lioness curled up in the corner of her cell to continue her nap. Whats up with her? Bellona has felt strongly against tigers since her mate was killed by one, the hyena answered. She loved Titan so much. One day the humans put him in a fight with a tiger, and neither of them survived. My mother was killed by a lion. Bellona woke up abruptly. Say what? When I was a cub, my mother fought a lion and they were both killed. Is Titan the same lion she faced? What was your mothers name? Dandi. Any offspring of Dandi must die. Youre crazy! Am I? How would you feel when your one true mate dies in battle with a stuckup, aristocratic creature, one that sees all other animals as peasants rather than equals? I told you before, tigers dont think like that! Oh please! This argument is coming from a tiger that was raised in a palace and living a life of luxury while the rest of us are rotting away in these cages.

That doesnt mean I dont see other animals as equals. Youre just like the humans. They think they own everything. They think they can abuse us. Shut up! There you go again! Telling me what to do! From the other room, Brutus could hear Tigress and Bellona roaring at each other. Knock it off! His shrieks echoed through the entire Coliseum, and all the animals were still with fear. Now youve done it! Bellona whispered. You got us in trouble. Me? Youre the one getting excited. This discussion is over. Fine with me. The tension level between the two felines remained high, but they calmed themselves down by avoided contact with each other. One was silent and the other agreed to do the same.

Alana visits Tigress

The next day, Felix brought Alana to the underground chambers. Thank you for bringing me here, Felix. Im sure Tigress is missing me. Brutus told me that she has been frantic ever since her arrival. Poor thing! I cant wait to see her face light up when she sees Ive gone out of my way to see her. Just before they got to the cells, Brutus intercepted them. Where are you two going? To see your tiger? Yes sir. How is she? Alana asked. Not good so far. She has been making a ruckus all night, and it stirred up the other animals. Especially Bellona. Can I see her? Sure, but you have to see her behind bars. I fear shes still in a troubled mood. She wont be once she sees me. We havent been apart since Felix brought her to the palace. This must be nerve-wrecking for her. Tigress was in the corner facing the wall when she heard Alanas voice. She quickly approached the bars and extended her paw through them. Felix was touched, but not Brutus. Shes playing a dangerous game. She trusts Tigress. Im sure she did during her little rampage. Youre never going to let that go, are you? No, and do you know why? Because animals belong in cages. You give them all your love and then they decide to eat you. Tigress overreacted that night. I suppose youve stated your opinion to the emperor? No sir. I didnt think so.

I admit, it was a scary moment, but that doesnt mean that Tigress is blood thirsty. I believe it was all a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding of human interaction with a wild animal. Trust me; the tiger is better off locked in a cage. Its safe to say that Brutus and Felix had different views on how Gods creatures are treated. Theyre beliefs always made them feud over minor situations, such as allowing Alana to interact with Tigress. Brutus had a busy schedule, so he left for Felix to make that decision. Its time to go back to the palace, Alana. Do I have to? Look at how happy Tigress is. She doesnt want me to go. Im sorry princess, but your father told me to bring you back in time for lunch. We cant keep him waiting. Alana sighed. Could we come back tomorrow? I dont see a problem with that. We need to run that by your father first. Im sure hell let you come down here anytime you want. I hope so. I really miss having Tigress running around the palace. Me too. Once again, the chamber was vacant of any humans. That visit from Alana made Tigress day. The goofy smile on her face was enough to confuse the other animals. Bellona was more disgusted than befuddled. You may me sick. What? Please, youre happiness is enough to make me vomit. Just because youre miserable doesnt mean the rest of us have to. Why dont you sulk in your corner and mind your own business? Thats just the kind of remark I would expect from a tiger. Would you stop with this tiger hatred already? Im sure everyone here is sick of hearing it. The other animals did agree. Fine, Ill stop, but I cant help but speak the truth. What do you have against Alana? Shes a human. Now youre going to attack humans? Why do you hate everyone? I only hate them because they make me hate them. Humans have abused me to the point where I cant stand them. A human bonding with a tiger is the all time ticket to vomit-ville. The problem is that I cant hide from it. Its a shame you never had a human to love. I would never be friends with a human even if you put an arrow to my head. Theyre savages! Not all of them! Oh please, do you really believe that Alana wouldnt one day butcher an animal? What if she becomes a warrior and participates in the tournaments? How would you feel about her if she killed another tiger? She would never do that! Dont be too sure. Humans have a way of changing. She wont be a sweet, little girl forever. When humans grow up, they become cruel. I dont care what you say.

The fighting begins

Alana made trips to the Coliseum every day to visit Tigress. When she left, Tigress and Bellona carried on with their bickering. Things stayed the same for the first few weeks until Brutus finally decided that it was time to start the animal tournaments. The object was to eliminate animals until it came down to the two survivors. The final battle would be fought between them. Bellona was familiar with the tournament rules, and she was everyones favorite fighter. Tigress on the other hand had never fought with another animal. She wasnt even sure if she had the ability to do so. Her first battle was between her and one of the hyenas. At first, she didnt attempt to fight, but Brutus henchmen provoked her. They poked her with sharp rods and agitated her to the point where she would lash out. The hyena got the full blast of her rage. Alana was disgusted with the way the people were treated Tigress. Her family had to attend every event for political reasons. She never watched the fighting. Instead she found herself a seat far away from the balcony and stare at the floor trying to block out the sound of the cheering crowd. Tigress was petrified of the tournaments. Her first fight with the hyena nearly killed her. After she proved to be a survivor, Brutus brought her back to the cage where she would await her next battle. Bellona was the other champion. She pulverized every creature she came up against, even when they threw gladiators into the mix. There was no doubt that she would make it into the finals, for she was crowned queen of the tournaments every year. The brutal lifestyle of the Coliseum took a toll on Tigress. She wasnt her usually passive, gentle self. Each day she spent in the cell, she became more and more short tempered. Bellona noticed it more than the other animals, and she teased Tigress about it. Not so much fun living in the real world, is it? You wouldnt know about that because youve spent your life as a pampered cat. Tigress pinned her ears back as Bellona continued nagging. I dont want to hear another word! Admit it! Youre a palace rat! Enough already! I cant stand listening to you day in and day out. Its driving me insane! Ill tell you whats driving you insane; the fact that your own human friends dumped you in the dump. Now you have to live the life of a normal animal. Its painful being at the bottom of the status chain, isnt it? Alana and Felix arrived. Tigress wasnt in the mood for a visit, so she tried to ignore them as they approached the bars. Alana knew why Tigress was acting strange, but she didnt think that she would act introverted during their daily visit. Tigress? Its me, Alana. Please dont sulk like that. The tournaments must be getting to her. I think its best we leave her alone, Felix suggested. But what about our visit? Some other time. Come on, lets go back to the palace.

No, I came here to see how my friend is doing, and Im not going home until Ive spent time with her. Alana reached into the cage. Come here Tigress. I know youve had a rough day, and I want to make it better. Please? Tigress turned around sharply and bit Alanas hand. Felix pulled her away from the bars. Are you alright princess? No! Tigress, why did you do that? I think we better go now. Tigress is obviously in a fowl mood. Well have to bandage that hand. It was the second time Tigress snapped, and the second time she had to wonder why she did it. What have I done? Looks like you bit the hand that fed you, Bellona remarked. I didnt mean to. Forbidden visits
Antoine and Attina were shocked to hear about Alanas mishap. Dear, what happened to your hand? Attina asked. Tigress bit me, Alana replied. What? I guess she was all the fighting in the event has made her irritated. Its nothing. I still have a hand, dont I? Honey, thats not the point. Tigress has officially become blood thirsty. This is the first time she bit you. Im sure she didnt mean it. Shes my closest friend, and she wouldnt deliberately hurt me unless she had a reason. Tigers dont have friends, Antoine interrupted. They act gentle and sweet when theyre young, but then they turn on you when theyre old enough to hunt. Thats why she bit you. Now she has a taste for people. Its a good thing we didnt keep her. Dad! Youre talking like Brutus. He happens to be right. Alana, I forbid you to ever go down there to visit Tigress. Do you understand? I cant do that! Listen to me, you cant go back there. If the same thing happens, you might not have a hand anymore. She was just grumpy today. She can be over it tomorrow. As long as Brutus has her fighting in the tournaments, shell never be over it. I hate you! Alana ran to her room and locked herself inside. The maids passing by the door could hear her sobbing. They went to Antoine and asked him what was wrong. The princess is crying heavily and she wont come out of her room. Should we have a talk with her? No. Shes just upset because I told her she couldnt see Tigress anymore. How come?

She was bit. Oh my Gosh, is she alright? She says she is, but if she keeps up that attitude she wont have a limb. Let her be. Perhaps shell come to her senses. She needs to think long and hard about what she said to me. Sir, dont you think youre being irrational over the situation? Felix asked. Do you think its acceptable that she said she hates me? No, but Then Im only being fair. We went through this before and well keep doing it until she learns a lesson. I want you to make sure she doesnt go to the Coliseum, seeing is how youre the one who always took her there. Yes sir. Felix went to Alanas bedroom and knocked on the door. Who is it? Alana asked while wiping the tears from her eyes. Its Felix. Could I come in for a second and talk with you? Yes. Alana unlocked the door and offered a chair to Felix. Are you here to tell me about what I did wrong? Yes and no. I thought Id give you a little pep talk. I dont want to hear anymore lectures. Im tired of people telling me what to do and telling me its because they love me. Youre father is only trying to protect you. From what? Not having a friend? Tigress is a wild animal, and they have natural instincts that protect them in environments theyre not use to. Shes from a jungle where humans are rarely seen. She doesnt know how to protect herself in our world. She was never like this when she lived in the palace. Are you forgetting what happened during your annual dinner with the merchants? That was different. She was hungry. Exactly. When tigers are hungry, they become dangerous, and you cant calm them down by throwing food in their face. Theyre born to hunt. Tigress isnt like that! Shes gentle. She wasnt gentle when she bit you. You sound just like my father! Alana, lets be reasonable. Youre father is right to an extent. Im responsible for taking you to the Coliseum, and Im going to be responsible for keeping you out. Youre taking his side? Its for your own good. How is any of this for my own good? You people are making me miserable! I want Tigress to come back home where she would be loved again. She doesnt deserve to be there and fighting other animals. It makes me sick! Alana No more talking! Get of my room! Alana went back to her bed, laid down and continued crying. Hurt by what she told him, Felix left. He went back to Antoine and told him every word of the conversation.

Going in disguise
The next day when Alana didnt show up, Tigress became anxious. Deep down she knew that she was the reason why. If only I didnt bite her hand, she would be here for a visit. Ill bet Antoine stopped her from coming here. Youre very astute for a tiger, Bellona said. The king would surely ban his own daughter from visiting the one friend she had. It makes perfect sense to me. Do you have any idea what kind of a man he is? He didnt even want me in the first place. He told Alana that it was a bad idea. I suppose he was right. As soon as they find no use for you, they bring you here. Theres nothing for you to correct. Attina stood outside Alanas door begging her to come out. Honey, youve been in there all morning! The next event is in two hours, and you have to be there. Why? You know I dont like watching animals fight to the death. I dont either, but were obligated to show up. The royal family must always attend civilian festivities. Maybe I dont want to be a princess anymore! Honey! Listen to yourself! I am mom. Alana heard them leave. It dawned on her that Tigress would be fighting that day, and she wanted to see her before something happened. With her parents believing she was going to remain locked her room, she would be clear to sneak to the Coliseum. She peeked out of her door and saw the that the hallway was empty. She went all the way downstairs into the guards chamber. Only Felix was present because the others were busy guarding the front gates. He was preparing himself for the tournament; Brutus told him that he was going to be facing Bellona. Before he could put on his armor, one of the servants called him. Mr. Felix, could I see you for a moment? Once he went back upstairs, Alana put on the armor. She wore the breast plates to give her body the appearance of a man and she used the helmet to cover her face. She scurried outside where she drifted into town disguised as a gladiator. Felix returned to find his equipment gone. Wheres my armor? he asked the servant. I put everything on this table. Are you sure? Positive. Attina went back to Alanas room an hour later. Are you ready to go, dear? There was no answer. Honey? Are you even speaking to me anymore? She pushed on the door and noticed it wasnt locked. The room was empty. She went to the guards chamber and found Felix searching for his armor. Thank goodness I found you! Whats wrong? Alana isnt in her room. Have you seen her? No. In fact, my armor just went missing. You dont suppose They stared at each other for a long, awkward moment. Oh my God. Shes going to the Coliseum!

A mistake
Alana had no trouble getting to the underground animal storage. With the disguise, the other gladiators thought she was one of them. Tigress was lying down trying to forgive herself about how she behaved when Alana found her. She lifted the face cover of the helmet. Hey girl, its me. Tigress perked up. She cautiously walked over to the bars and allowed Alana to pat her. You didnt think I would miss our time together, did you? Tigress purred. Bellona watched them with discuss like she always did. Brutus entered the room and saw Alana, though he didnt know it was her. Felix? What are you doing down here? The people are waiting for you to appear in the arena. Alana was beside herself, but she didnt say anything because she didnt want Brutus to know it was her. Get out there! Yes sir, she said in a deep voice trying to resemble Felix. Brutus game her a sword and led her to the ring where thousands of people were watching her. She stood in the middle and waited for her opponent. Oh no! Theyve mistaken Alana for a gladiator. We have to do something! Tigress started to panic. I think its rather intriguing. She could be killed.

Dont worry, Ill take it easy on her. What are you talking about? Today is my day to fight. Apparently shes my opponent. I was expecting a more challenging gladiator, but at leas this would be a guaranteed win. If you harm her I will kill you. Oh Im so scared. You should be! Dont they have sarcasm where you come from? No pampered, palace rat is going to scare me. Not in a million years. Thats because youre not wise. Be that as it may, you will not interfere with my reputation as being champion of the tournaments. Is that all you care about? What can I say, I enjoy a good game of survival of the fittest. Brutus went into Bellonas cage ant put a chain around her neck. She didnt struggle, for she was looking forward to the battle.

Tigress vs. Bellona

Attina and Felix went to the Coliseum. They found a couple of gladiators by the animal cages. Excuse me gentlemen, but have you seen my daughter come down here? She might have been wearing armor as a disguise. As a matter of fact, we noticed a rather small soldier. I wouldve never guessed it would be the princess. Where is she? If that was her, Brutus sent her to the ring to fight Bellona. Felix, we better hurry and get her out of there! Bellona was restrained by shackles to give Alana the advantage. She held her sword high, but she never attempted to swing it. Harming an animal, even for protection, was something she couldnt do. Bellona on the other hand wanted desperately to tear the princess limb from limb. With her brute strength, she yanked on the chains and they gradually started pulled away from the ground. Stay here your highness, Felix ordered. That lion will eat you alive! Its worth saving your daughter. Dont worry about me! Bellona finally broke free. She pounced on Alana and knocked off her helmet. The entire crowd gasped at the sight of the princess. Antoine, who was on the balcony, turned ghost white. Alana! he screamed. Guards! Get her out of there! Felix ran into the arena. He slashed Bellona with the sword, but this only angered her. Without his armor, he didnt stand a chance. Bellona clawed him multiple times and threw him to the ground like a rag doll. The other gladiators who went into the arena couldnt control the beast either.

Tigress heard the screaming. She paced the floor and made a steady, low growl hoping that someone would release her. Attina was standing nearby. They both need help. Tigress will have to do. She opened the cage and Tigress bolted into the arena. Bellona was about to finish Alana off when Tigress jumped in front of her. Get out of my way! If youre going to kill her, you have to kill me too. No problem. Like the beginning of every dual, the two felines looked each other in the eye until one made the first move. Bellonas mighty jaws locked onto Tigress neck, and two embroiled in the most brutal fight anyone ever saw. Felix crawled over to Alana. Come on, we have to get you out of here, he said. Alana didnt want to leave Tigress behind, so she stubbornly refused to move. Tigress was getting tired. She would raise her paw with her claws erected, but she didnt have the energy to use them. Bellona wasnt about to thrown in the towel. She shoved Tigress onto a weak part of the arena where the only think keeping the ground level was a couple of boards covering a ditch. The boards cracked when she hit them. It ends here, Bellona said. She pounced, and the weight of her landing on Tigress made the boards collapse. The chain around her neck got caught on one that was suspended in the dirt, and she hanged herself. The audience, Attina, Antoine, Felix, and Alana saw the whole thing. Tigress! Alana screamed. She wanted to see if her beloved pet survived the fall, but Felix grabbed her cloak. Wait! Its not safe! I have to see if shes alright. Im afraid shes gone. Realizing the circumstances, Alana fell back to the ground and cried. Felix tried to console her. Im sorry princess. My poor Tigress. She saved us, and now shes gone. A noise arose from the ditch. Everyone watched with anticipation as Tigress emerged. Alana was still crying, but the sound of the cheering crowd hinted at the miracle. Alana, it looks like Tigress made it. Tigress, with a slight limp, walked over to Alana and gently rubbed her forehead on her. Im glad youre alright! As the two long, lost friends embraced each other, the people applauded. Antoine went down into the arena. Alana he said sternly. Father, Im sorry I disobeyed you. I deserve whatever punishment you give me. The important thing is that youre safe. I thought I was going to lose you. Youre not mad? Not as much as I am relieved. About Tigress Please dont punish her for what I did! She didnt do anything! Relax! Im not going to punish her. Tigress returned to the palace, and she lived the rest of life with her best friend. Most people believed that she was the only tiger to die at a peaceful, old age. She left behind an influence that made people view animal fights as inhumane. Alana eventually became empress. She enforced a law that would restrict animals from being used in any tournament that involved death. She opened her palace as a haven for all the animals that couldnt return to the wild. Just like with Tigress, she gave them love and affection. Her philosophy was that animals had feelings that meant as much as anyones, and that they should be respected. The Coliseum events eventually came to an abrupt end once the Roman empire lost its greatness. Was it the end of animal cruelty? In a world where humans are the land lords, animals would always succumb to torture and inhumanity. For that brief moment in time, they were equals. End.
