THE
Summer 2013
Responding to Gods Grace in Christ, we Welcome all people, Prepare disciples, and Live faithfully through worship, spiritual growth, and action.

Why Share Your Faith?

I once attended a workshop sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Utah during which the leader asked the 200 or so people gathered if they viewed the word evangelism positively. Maybe one brave soul raised a hand. Then the facilitator asked the same crowd how many of them came to the Episcopal Church later in life, i.e., are not cradle Episcopalians. Pretty much the whole room raised their hands. The take-away lesson for me: mainline Christians are allergic to evangelism however much they must have been evangelized at one time or another, or else they wouldnt be Christians! Im a cradle Lutheran who has been reflecting on why I stayed in the Lutheran Church as an adult. My best reason: because I believe that the unknowable God has become known in Jesus, and what is known is that God is full of grace. And that makes a huge difference to me in the world of tenthousand things as Lao-Tzu called it. Under every decaying leaf in my yard, or shimmering red cardinal perched outside my office window, or even amid every tragedy I see in the hospital consultation room, I know that the God of infinite, unconditional grace and selfgiving love is there. Weeping with those who weep, rejoicing with those who rejoice. This is the God who, as Julian of Norwich put it, will make all things well, even if at any given moment all evidence runs to the contrary. The tomb is still empty. And that gives me hope. Thats a wordy reason why I have faith. What is yours? And what difference does it make to you? And what difference would it make to someone else? Who in your life needs to hear it? How you answer those questions is your own individual evangelism program. Evangelist Billy Graham anecdotally once said, Of all Christians, Lutherans have the deepest grasp of the gospel. The only problem is, they dont want to tell anybody. As much as I like Billy, we need to prove him wrong. And I know we can and do. Lets not tire of sharing the gospel. After all, God does not tire of us, and thats really good news! Christs Peace, Pr. Joel

Hello St. Paul Family, I'm excited that next month the Hunger Leaders' Gathering - a national ELCA event - will take place in Des Moines at St. John's Lutheran July 1114! I'm excited about it because I see this as a great opportunity for us in Iowa to host the larger church and to showcase some of our state treasures in the area of food production. Jessica Fairfax and Mikka McCracken from ELCA Hunger have asked for some local help with the gathering. There are a number of opportunities to help with this event, from registration to set-up to take-down, and tasks in between. The synod's Hunger Team and it's Church in Society Commission are also involved in helping and finding help. I see this as an opportunity for you to meet others who are interested in faith and food and to learn about how we can respond to Jesus' command to "feed my sheep". Thanks for considering this request. If you are interested and available to serve in a shift or two, please contact me via email or phone. Thank you for your prayerful consideration! Peace, Joel

Sometimes a prayer for friends or loved ones entreats God to protect or heal them, but sometimes a prayer can also be a note we write, a call we make, or a pie we bake. Reach out, with all kinds of prayer, to these and others, to show them they are loved:

Gifts of Talent
On Sunday June 9, we welcome ReCreation. Winterset teacher, Matt Kiger was once a member of this group, and some of you may remember us hosting them in the past. The members of Re-Creation are not paid for their service, and they spend a year or more traveling the country entertaining the men and women in our VA medical centers. A big thank you to the Scott, Dodd, Dick, and Nau families for hosting the members at their homes on Saturday evening. The group will join us for a potluck lunch after the 10:30am service, so bring a dish and join us for lunch!

To meet our budget for 2013, our weekly general fund need is $4537/week. Our general fund pays for salaries, facilities, administration, insurance, utilities, education, worship, & program expense. To meet our 2013 pledge of $8500 to the SEIA Synod we need $163.46/week. The Pool of Siloam serves local benevolence and is matched dollar-for-dollar by a very generous donor.

Education Opportunities
Summer Program The Way
Join us each Sunday morning this Summer at 9:30am for our intergenerational education program The Way a DVD series by Adam Hamilton. Using videos shot on location, Hamilton takes viewers on a virtual journey to see the greatest landmarks of the Holy Land. All ages are invited to participate, and families are encouraged to participate together. We will start each discussion with an overview to what well be seeing, watch the video, then have some discussion afterward. Ideas and activities will be provided for parents to extend the discussion with their kids. This is a different kind of program than we have offered in the past, and we look forward to your participation and feedback. Our first Sunday was wonderful with all ages participating and enjoying the program! Easter Morning was a whirlwind of fun with dyed eggs from the God Squad kids, a fabulous Easter Breakfast, & an Easter Egg Hunt for the little ones. A special thanks to Candi Dole for coordinating the eggdyeing & the Easter Egg Hunt!

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
VBS will be July 29 to August 1st. This year's theme is "Remedy", based on 1 John 4:10, "This is love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." We are in need of people to house counselors, donations of food and snacks during the week, and supplies. VBS is for kids age Pre-K through 6th grade, and older kids and parents are needed as helpers. Please mark your calendars and join us! To register use the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9NNP6PW

God Squad Finishes the Year with FUN!

On one of our last evenings of God Squad, Kristin Myli led the 4th and 5th graders in preparing and serving dinner for everyone, including the kindergarten through 6th grade God Squad students, the 7th and 8th grade confirmation students, and all the teachers. Together, this is about 70 to 80 people. They had fun and served with a smile!

Quilt Raffle Tickets for Sale

The quilt now hanging in the fellowship hall was originally pieced by Ilene Kagarice. Based on when she started assembling the blocks, she estimated that some of the fabrics were from the 1930s and 40s and up. The quilting was done by Peggy Freligh, who bound and trimmed it in black and white to showcase the colorful array of fabrics. Ilene and her family were very happy with the finished quilt, and shortly thereafter (in February), Ilene passed away. Raffle tickets for this quilt are available for $1each or 6 for $5. The winner will be drawn in August at the Table Affair Dinner. Talk to any of the quilters about purchasing tickets.

Opportunities
Automatic Giving
Monthly giving at St. Paul tends to decline over the summer due to lower attendance. However, our bills remain constant. If you would like to provide an offering to St. Paul during the summer even on the weeks/months when you travel - please consider signing up for automatic transfer (or Electronic Funds Transfer - EFT). Just go to the church website www.wintersetlutheran.org and click the Electronic Giving link on the front page. From there, you can choose to set up recurring payments on a weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly basis . . . OR make a one-time donation. It can be done through your checking, savings, or credit card accounts. Thank you for your support, no matter how you give it!

Table Affair Coming August 24!

News From The Kitchen Crew!

Its been a very busy spring for us in St. Pauls kitchen, starting with the "Republican Dinner. After that we had four dinners in April all in one week. They were the Winterset Alumni, the Madison Co. Hospital volunteers, sorority dinner, and the confirmation dinner. We also had two dinners in May. Madison County Health Institute and Madison County Leadership Forum. So far in June we have two scheduled dinners. One is a camping group from DesMoines and the other is a tour bus from Arkansas. As you can see we keep pretty busy! Thanks to my crew for all they do! Pat, Dorothy, Erlene, Cheryl and Linda. Also Starr is helping us when she can. We really appreciate all of you that help us when we put out the call. I'm beginning to plan for our annual Table Affair which will be August 24th. Since this will be our 5th anniversary of this event I want to make it a little more special. It's going to be called, "Table Affair/Family Affair." All themes will deal with the family. What you did as a child growing up or what you do with your family now. We have some really fun themes so far such as "Family Vacation", "Family Camping" , "Family Pets", "Building A Snowman", "Ice Skating", "Fourth of July Party" "Family Game Night" "Friday Night Football" "All Things Wild" just to name a few. I have a good start with ten hostesses. All I need is five more. If there are some of you that are thinking about being a part of this event just give me a call. We need you! I have some neat things planned so you won't want to miss this one. It will be an evening to remember! Ticket sales are going well. As you all know we are selling tickets on a beautiful quilt. It's hanging in the fellowship hall for all to see. A lot of work and love has gone into this quilt so take a look and don't miss your chance of winning this quilt. We will also be giving away a $500 gift card from Best Buy. It can be used for anything at Best Buy, from electronics to T.V. to appliances. It's your choice. Be sure and get your tickets now! They are $1 each. or 6 for $5. You don't have to be present to win! The drawings will be at the Table Affair. Anyone wishing to help out with tickets sales such as taking them to your work place or family dinners just let me know and I'll get tickets to you. Thanks to everyone for supporting us in our many endeavors! ~Connie Weidman

Ministry Team Updates

What is the SPRC?
The mission of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee is to serve both the congregation and the church staff by listening to the concerns or needs of the congregation and providing support to the Pastor and staff. The Committee serves as both "blanket" and "sandpaper" to the staff. This means that the SPRC provides the care and comfort of a blanket, as well as the gift of difficult feedback to "sand" off any rough edges. Committee meetings offer time for open dialogue, problemsolving and reflection. This year's committee consists of Ann Bartelt, chair; Jason Darling, Karen Meyer, and Lorrie Drake, with an additional member to be named by the Church Council. Meetings are held every four to six weeks throughout the year. The congregation is urged to contact any member of the committee at any time.

& Mission
Easter Baskets Benefit 78 Children
Thank you to everyone who helped with the Easter baskets by making them or donating items for the baskets. A special thank you to the trust fund for donating money to purchase items for the baskets. A total of 78 baskets were made. The baskets were delivered to the following places: Hope Ministries Homeless Families Shelter, Freedom for Youth to satellite programs in Stuart and Mitchellville, and teen parents and local families in Winterset. Some really great things came out of this project . . . besides 78 kids receiving baskets that reminded them of God's love for them: 1. Our congregation received an open invitation from Hope Ministries to visit and serve a meal at their shelter for homeless families. 2. More connections were made with Freedom for Youth. Many of the baskets that went to Mitchellville were given to children of the women prisoners. 3. The Stuart Freedom for Youth leaders said that they had prayed for members going to Africa and asked us to continue to pray for Blessman Ministries and the people who travel to Africa to help. 4. Julie formed a partnership with her cousin Jenny and Alabaster Ministries in Winterset helped deliver the baskets this year and may help next year. A special thanks to God Squad for always working on this project so enthusiastically! ~Sonya VerMulm and Kim Patience

Health, Wellness, & Healing

The Health, Wellness, and Healing team sponsored the St Paul Walks program again during Lent. It was a great opportunity for our members to add some physical exercise to their daily routine. This spring we also sponsored the End of Life series again, which was extended to the community. We brought in speakers on various topics including funeral planning, hospice, and financial planning. We hope to continue to offer opportunities to help nurture the physical and spiritual wellness of St Paul's members.

ELW Hymnals
Mr. Dean Bartelt and an anonymous donor have generously offered a combined $1000 designated toward the purchase of the new red hymnal, the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book. The council considered their offer and decided to proceed with purchasing 50 copies. If you would like to adopt a hymnal and memorialize or honor a loved one, please sign up on the kiosk. The cost is $20 per book, made payable to St. Paul, and funds from these donations will be used to purchase additional copies. Altogether, we hope to purchase 60+ copies. This new book contains hymns and liturgies that are familiar to us, as well as a wealth of new service music and hymns. We are excited about this new opportunity and very grateful for the donations!

HyVee Nutrition Tour

The HWH team is also sponsoring a Nutrition Tour at the West Des Moines HyVee to learn about healthy eating. Well be touring with the dietician and learning more about our favorite grocery items. Two tours are scheduled: Tuesday, June 11, 2pm or Thursday, June 20, 6:30pm. We will meet at the church to carpool one hour before the tours begin. Space is limited, so please call the church office to indicate your interest. This is a great opportunity to learn how to take care of our God-given health. Questions? Contact: Lori Blythe, 249-2096

Disaster Response Team

I am looking to form a Disaster Response Team at St. Paul, and I am seeking others who may be interested in helping me get it organized. This team would function as a central point of information and action when a St. Paul family is in need of serious help - ie: after a house fire, tornado damage, flooding, etc. There tends to be a lot of confusion and miscommunication when these types of events occur, and it would be very beneficial to have a team here at St. Paul prepared to offer assistance coordinating help for the family. Please contact me at 468-5263 or ajnau4@gmail.com if you are interested. Once I get a group of interested individuals we will plan an initial meeting. Thank you for your consideration! ~Annie Nau

For this world is not our home; we are looking forward to our everlasting home in heaven. Don't forget to do good and to share what you have . ~Hebrews 13:14,16 Stewardship has been really growing at St Paul Lutheran! Congratulations to the confirmation class on raising $699 for CRISP summer program. Also, a BIG thank you goes out to Chris Brown for researching & correcting the leaky drips we have been dealing with in the church building. The congregation enjoyed a wonderful program given by the youth involved in God's Squad & Sunday School. We are grateful for the children that participated and those adults who helped with teaching, making meals and providing music activities. Julie has been doing an excellent job of promoting automatic giving. We thank everyone who has signed up and hope that more individuals would consider doing the same. Special thanks to Jared Patience for mowing the grass again this year (& for mowing Pastor Joels lawn!). We appreciate the new faces helping with the church services. We are also blessed with some exciting summer programs put in place by our planning committee. We truly are blessed with the gifts of stewardship. As usual we soon will be planning our Fall Festival to show our appreciation for the acts of stewardship given in our congregation.
