On June 15, Strathmore RCMP are inviting the community to come out and get to know them, and their jobs, a little better. For the first time since Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly has been in Strathmore, the detachment will be holding an open house at the station. Its geared towards members of the community, both the town and the rural, but were hoping to have a large amount of kids and families come. Thats why its on a Saturday, to try and get that involvement and see and meet us in a different light than you normally deal with us, said Reilly. Its something I have been thinking of trying to do for the last few years. I think its a good community event, it allows people to get involved and meet some of the police officers outside of the working environment, which doesnt always create the best relationships, and it involves community and families which is what its all about. The day will start out at 11 a.m. The tour will begin at the detachment with a short three to five minute video of life in the RCMP, followed by a tour of the office. Well have that in the training room so people can kind of see what happens in training and through your career. Then theyll get the tour of the whole office. Probably the highlight for most of them is going to be the cell block area, where well show them cells and all that, said Reilly. The open house will include a number of outdoor things that will keep families entertained all day as well. We have the dog section coming out and were hoping to get them to do some demonstrations. The RCMP helicopter is going to be here, just as a display, said Reilly. The Explosives Disposal Unit, commonly referred to as the bomb squad guys, are booked to come down and theyll be doing demonstrations. Not blowing up stuff, but they have robots (they will demo) that are used to get to a dangerous area or suspicious package, so that they (the squad) dont have to walk in there in case something does happen. Students at Wheatland Elementary School got to sample a bit of western life, at their 13th annual Western Days on May 31. The day included a petting area, with sheep and horses, an opportunity for students to sharpen their roping skills, and of course, a pancake breakfast. One of the top draws at the event was a trick riding demonstration by Bradi Dunn (shown here) and Kirstie Rougeau. Doug Taylor Photo

Who is covered on your home/tenant insurance policy?
With the economy being the way it is, I have come across some different types of living valancy mitchell situations when I am writing Account executive homeowners policies. The basic rule of thumb is, H Home if your roommate is related H FArm to you, or is a dependent H AuTo under the age of 18, they will be covered under your H GrouP homeowners/tenant policy. ProGrAmS -If you are married or if you H CommerCIAl have been living together for H reCreATIon more than 3 years, you could be considered common-law. H lIFe If you have a child together, H TrAvel then you would be considered Take ACTION common-law. - if your child is going to Against High college or university in a Premiums different town, they could be eligible to be covered under your homeowner/ tenant policy If the person living with you is a friend, then they will need a separate tenants policy. Sometimes these situations can get a little complicated. It is always best to ask your broker, to make sure everyone and everything is covered correctly!

Youth Club continues to offer great programming

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The thought of leaving your child home alone can sometimes invoke images of things going wrong, just like the classic Home Alone movies from the 90s. While the movies are a bit of a far stretch from what can happen on a day-to-day basis, the Youth Club of Strathmore is offering a course that should help alleviate some of those fears. At Home Alone is a course for children ages 10 and up, that teaches youth about home alone safety. The course helps build confidence through safety, first aid and comfort skill with instruction by ChildSafe Canada. Just because a youth reaches a certain age it does not mean they are ready to stay at home alone. There is no legal age in Alberta where a youth can be at home alone, said Colina Clark, Program Coordinator for the Youth Club. That decision is between the youth and the parent, based on the youths confidence and skill level. And this course may provide an opportunity to open up that dialogue between youths and parents. The At Home Alone course will be held at the Youth Club centre, on June 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Youth Club is quickly filling the month of June with a variety of events to please most. On June 6, there will be a Fusion movie night, for students in Grade 7 and older. They will be showing OzThe Great and Powerful at the centre. June 7 marks another Fantabulous Friday. Tech is the theme and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Minds in Motion, from the University of Calgary, will be bringing in their LEGO Mindstorm. They are a very popular Lego theme that uses robotics. It goes beyond blocks. For a boy, its a great opportunity to work with them as the Mindstorm robot is very expensive, said Clark. For all the young anglers out there, the Youth Club is now offering a fishing workshop on June 11, 13 and 15. The fishing workshop came about because of interest expressed by youth in the community and is being delivered by a volunteer whos a recreational fisherman himself, said Clark. The two classroom instructions will be held at the Youth Club and will be followed with a field trip to the Stavely Reservoir, to put the newly learned skills into action. There is still more room for registration into the fishing workshop. Its $20 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

RCMP open their home

Continued from Page 1 There will be demonstrations held every hour from the Police Dog Services. At the end of the day there will be a demonstration of a high risk vehicle take-down scenario, involving the dogs and three members. The Strathmore Regional Victim Services will have a booth set up, explaining who they are and what their role is in the community. Reilly said Victim Services also play a large part in the day. The identification and forensics services will also be doing demos, on how finger printing is done and their role in the force. We certainly cant fingerprint all the kids, but at least they can show them what they do with that, said Reilly.

Some of the demonstrations, including the ones with the Police Dog Services, will be held on the Westmount Elementary school field. There will be a display of police cars, including the retro police car. Some of the members will also be set up with their own cars, explaining the mobile workstations and letting kids sit in the back seat, if theyre interested. Emergency response team members will be there with their tactical gear, and of course there will be members in Red Serge, and much, much more. Everything will begin at 11 a.m. on June 15, and is scheduled to run until 4 p.m. There will be a free BBQ and drinks for the first 1,000 people. Reilly said parking is limited, so they are asking people who live in town to consider walking to the event.

Spring Fest overflows with colour and activity

Thanks to the beautiful sunshine, Strathmores annual Spring Fest was a great success. The festival was held at the Strathmore Curling Club this year, where over 40 venders showed up to show off their goods. Angie Hitch was on hand to do her famous face painting. As well, live entertainment was on the Encana stage and Liquid Light among the many artists. Visitors could explore local venders inside and out the curling arena, as well as have lunch and watch the kids have a blast in the bouncers. Spring Fest organizers Rose Hamrlik and Barb Narajiwsky were happy to donate $300 worth of proceeds to the Strathmore Scouts, in support of their 2015 World Scout Jamboree that will take place in Japan.

Wendi Tashlikowich Times Contributor Sharon Blanchard and the family school resource councilors with Golden Hills Drug and Alcohol program were at Brentwood Elementary on May 28. This program has been running through GHSD for 10 years and is brought to the schools to introduce awareness and information surrounding drugs and alcohol. The younger kids are taught right from the start how to say no, explains Blanchard. All grade levels are involved and learn age appropriate curriculum. Grade 5 and Grade 6 students from Hussar and Standard were invited to participate in the May 28 activities, which included Smokies Cafe. The term off-label drugs refers to the use of a drug for a condition its not approved for. A good example of this is using a drug used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure to relieve the anxiety of going on stage. Another is using an anti-malarial drug to treat night time leg cramps. Diphtheria, a serious, contagious disease, has largely been eradicated with only two cases being reported this century. A German physiologist, Emil von Behring, won the Nobel Prize in 1901 for his work in developing an anti-diphtheria vaccine. Allergies are common at this time of year. Can you outgrow an allergy? About 20% of people do. Many children outgrow their allergies to milk and eggs by the age of five. If you have an allergic child, check with an allergy specialist who can test for allergies and tell you the severity of the allergies your child has. Its ironic that society equates a tanned body with good health. However, as Health Canada says, theres no such thing as a healthy tan. Tanning is a sign of skin damage and excessive exposure to the sun can cause skin cancers in the future. If you want a quick, tanned look, you can try those quick tan lotions. Remember, they do not protect you from the sun. They are just cosmetic colourants.

County to use Municipal self-assessment tool kit

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor County councillors accepted the use of the Municipal Sustainability Self-Assessment Toolkit, put out by the Alberta Government, at the May 21 council meeting. It is mandatory for municipalities to supply the government with planning and financial information. The toolkit supplies recommendations and guidelines to standardize the submitted information, and can be used as a tool to evaluate the municipalitys financial health and planning initiatives. The information collected also gives comparative feedback to other similar municipalities. From what I can see, we are in really good shape, compared to some others that I have seen, said Alan Parkin, Wheatland County chief administrative officer (CAO). The Municipal Affairs website stated the implementation of the standardized information might be challenging for some municipalities. It developed the toolkit to assist municipalities in reaching the targeted goals. The format was developed by many of the impacted stakeholders. Members of the Alberta Chapter of the Government Finance Officers Association volunteered many hours of their time and expertise in the development of the recommended guidelines and other project materials. Wheatland councillors praised Wheatland staff for their due diligence, because many of the requirements were already in place. I am proud reading this and I compliment staff. It makes us look good and they keep council up-to-date on these kinds of things, said Councillor Ken Sauve. Part of the reporting includes areas of collaboration with other municipalities and grant applications. The government is making collaborative projects one of the deciding factors in awarding upcoming grants. Once this is in place, it will be a good step stone for obtaining future grants, said Reeve Glenn Koester. County Financial Officer Pat Leitch reviewed financial indicator graphs with the councillors, which were compiled by Municipal Affairs from financial information sent to the ministry. She clarified the information that could be gleaned from the summaries and comparisons. She also asked council if there was any beneficial information that could be added. You are the ones these financial reports are for, said Leitch. She added that she hoped the reports were helpful to their management and decision making processes. She cautioned that there may be differences in parameters for operations and reporting by the various counties. For example, there might be differences in goals, priorities, taxation, population, industry and geographic parameters that would affect the results on the graph. She said there were some factors that may skew the results slightly or introduce anomalies. Leitch expected those would be ironed out in future reports. Koester asked if cost sharing or cooperative projects between counties were recorded and Leitch replied that those were not indicated on the graphs. Councillors indicated that more breakdowns under each area may be helpful. They gave suggestions like a breakdown of transportation costs, taxation dollars per person and replacement costs versus new investment costs. They also thought employee wages and benefit comparisons would be helpful. Leitch felt that the government would be open to the suggestions offered by council, and she would ask to develop
PLEASE ADOPT FROM A RESCUE, all of our cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped & health checked before being adopted into their new forever homes!!

them on future reports. She summarized that the County had higher transportation costs, due to the number of kilometers of road system in Wheatland County. The lower debt load and higher surplus funds put the County in good financial shape by comparison. She suggested the County had a high reliance on tax revenue compared to other revenues and other counties, and it may be an issue to address in the future. Leitch indicated that the County might want to consider specific designations for the funds in the Capital surplus. Koester qualified that the County did not require as many municipal funding grants as other counties. He suggested it would be nice if the province offered financial incentives for fiscal responsibility. He thanked the CAO for the information, and Council approved that the information be included in their financial packages in the future. It is one of our duties here to understand this information. We need to take the time to review this instead of just relying on our staff to provide it, said Koester.

The first of four CD release parties was held for rising Country Music Artist Drew Gregory. It was a packed house at Standards new community hall on Friday evening. The new album includes his current radio hit Truck, Beer, Girl. The other release parties were held on June 4 at the Ranchmans in Calgary, June 5 at Fandangos in Edmonton and the last at Billy Bobs on June

Standard was fortunate enough to hear Wildflower, an Alberta-based country acoustic duo (www.wildflower-music. ca), with Jennie Clark and Dean Selby. Although the newest album is influenced mostly by his Southern Alberta heritage, Gregory is hoping to expand his music into Manitoba, Saskatchewan

and Ontario, continuing his career momentum in the country music industry. From the release party in Standard, Gregory said, I can not thank everyone enough who came out to the CD release show in Standard. The town and this County has given me some amazing support from the start and I am very grateful. Connecting the past with the present

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter

Its Our

John Godsman, Strathmore resident and writer, has put together a compilation of his Remembering Our Roots articles into a book of the same title. Remembering Our Roots Volume One contains 55 articles written from May 2010 until December 2012. Some of the people that I have seen over the last two years, three years whatever, have been pushing me to put this into book form, so that they could give it to their grandchildren, said Godsman. The book is filled with interviews and history from Strathmores residents, outlining how they came to be in the area, and what they are doing now. Godsman and his wife Anne, moved to Strathmore in 2000, and in 2002 he retired. He joined the seniors club and spent the next four winters playing cards throughout the day. After four years, I decided there had to be something better to do in retirement than sit and play cards all day, said Godsman. He was reading a history book Strathmore: the Village that moved, known as the green book to many, that had been printed in 1986, when an idea sparked. He wanted to know who was still living in the area from back then, and see what they had been up to. Bob and Jan Giles were his first interview for his new column. Godsman said he only ever interviewed one person that he found in the green book. It was Art Eeles. After that, he spoke with members of the Wheatland Whirlers, and members of his congregation, until he was given a list of names to contact.

John Godsman and his wife Anne are excited about his new history book release called Remembering Our Roots.

What originally began as a winter project has grown to become bi-weekly articles in the Strathmore Times. When I started the project I thought it might last six to nine months, and in May it (was) three years. The articles have evolved, initially I started off with 250 to 300 words. Now I am up between 600 and 900 words, because Im talking to older people who have a longer life time to talk about, said Godsman. Ive thoroughly enjoyed doing this, its been wonderful. I wish I had done it earlier, I have so many people I want to see and talk to. For the first printing run of the book, Godsman had 100 copies made up, and he has the option to order more at any time in the first year. Theyre going like hotcakes, I can see Im going to sell 100 no problem at all, said Godsman. Volume Two is scheduled to come out in 2015, with 52 articles. For now though,Volume One is available for $40 per book. To purchase the book contact the Strathmore Times at 403-934-5589. There will also be books available for sale at various locations around town. On June 8, Godsman will be at the Strathmore Municipal Library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to share his book and story.

Trina Lloyd Strathmore Montessori Society The Strathmore Montessori Society is running a Silent Auction fundraiser from June 10-24, 2013. Chinook Credit Union and Gold Key Insurance have generously donated space in their lobbies, where numerous auction items will be available for bidding until 2 pm on Monday, June 24. The auction items include: a one Day Family Pass for four to Tyrrell Museum, Calloway Park-Single Entry Pass for four, West Edmonton Mall-one Day Family Pass, Luggage and a Pentek Reverse Osmosis System and much more. All funds generated by the silent auction will directly benefit the K-3 Public Montessori Program, at Wheatland Elementary School in Strathmore. Supporting the Montessori Program at Wheatland Elementary is the parent-run charitable organization, the Strathmore Montessori Society. As an Alternative Program in Golden Hills School Division, the Montessori program receives funding for teacher salaries, but this financial support covers neither the cost of Montessori materials nor Montessori-specific teacher training, required in addition to a degree in Education. The SMS serves as the fundraising body to ensure these facets are addressed. Fall 2013 will mark the ninth school year for

Wheatlands Montessori program. The Grade K/1 and 2/3 classrooms are characterized with specially designed, manipulative materials inviting students to engage in learning activities at their own pace. Under the guidance of a trained teacher, children learn by making discoveries with the Montessori materials, cultivating concentration, motivation, self-discipline and a love of learning. A significant benefit of the Montessori philosophy is the way it allows students to learn at an individualized pace, providing enrichment, which can even challenge students to progress beyond regular grade level. It is important to note that though the way in which the students learn differs from a mainstream classroom, the curriculum set out by Alberta Education is followed. At present, there are still a few spaces left in the Montessori Kindergarten program at Wheatland Elementary School, which runs mornings Monday to Friday. If you are interested in registering your child in Montessori at any grade level, or would like more information, please call Wheatland Elementary School at 403-934-3318 and ask to speak to Principal Kevin Lane, or Associate Principal Michelle Silver Rushford, or you can contact Strathmore Montessori Society president Mandy Gillespie at 403-983-9880.

Breaking bread with Charlie Butler and his Band at fundraising dinner
Diane Berreth Hope Community Covenant Church On Saturday, June 15 at 6 p.m., Hope Community Covenant Church will be hosting a fundraising dinner for families in financial need in Strathmore. Hope has always wanted to be a relevant community for the Town of Strathmore and many of the initiatives run by the church are aimed at directly helping the people of the town and surrounding area. This includes initiatives such as School Fuel , a program aimed at feeding hungry kids in Strathmore elementary schools or the Step One Housing, which provides household items to families without. Hope will be hosting a fundraising dinner to further raise funds for individuals and families who are struggling. Every year, Hope is approached by people who have hit hard times and need a hand up, and thought a fun evening of entertainment and great food might be a way to get the whole town involved. Charlie Butler and his band will be providing the music. Originally from Philadelphia, Charlie has travelled the world extensively, entertaining in Europe, Asia, Caribbean, the United States and Canada. He has just returned from a seven month international stint. He is a singer-songwriter who began his career at the age of eight, beginning with the violin, and soon after his love for the guitar developed into his funky, bluesy, jazzy style unique to Charlie. His repertoire encompasses a diverse range of music from smooth jazz, blues, R & B, classic rock, reggae and a little country. Throughout his career Charlie has performed with the likes of Grover Washington Jr., Brook Benton, Donna summers, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and fellow Canadians: Jeff Healey, Murray McLaughlin, Amos Garrett and Rita McNeil. Drive my car
Pat Fule Fule for Thought Recently, I was driving in the Walmart parking lot, and a strange thing occurred to me. I dont know if you feel the same way, but it seems like we all lose our driving IQ there, and strange things happen. Its like all normal rules of driving go out the window and it becomes survival of the fittest! Its not even just the drivers, pedestrians going in or coming out of Walmart just go. Theres no looking both ways, theres just go! People also dont care too much about the intended roads in that lot, and they fly around cutting through the lot as if it was just some big track The Walmart 500! That got me thinking about driving, and things that happen behind the wheel, or even riding shotgun. In 1974, my older brother was stoked to get his drivers license, as most teenagers are. In those days, you had to get into Banff for the road test. Now in Banff, driving can get a bit crazy, as its a real tourist town. Gary had read his manual, passed the written, and only had his road test to finish. He was doing really well (or so he SAYS), until that fateful left turn on to Banff Avenue. Banff Avenue is the main road right through the town and has a lovely boulevard up the middle, to separate the streets. My brother, however, turned left on to Banff Avenue, but cut the turn a bit tight. Yup, you guessed it, he was now driving down the wrong side of the boulevard INTO oncoming cars! In fact, he had a long block to continue down, and the tester said calmly, you know youve failed, right? At that moment, my brother only wanted to get off that side of the road, and not wreck my dads new 1974 Dodge Monaco! Of course, driving with my brother was WAY more fun after this, you know and I reminded him of this, on any left turn! I shouldnt be too cocky, as I failed my first test, as well. It was a busy July day, and I was turning right onto the same stupid avenue. I did not realize that if youve started to turn right, and someone steps off the curb on the other side of the street, THAT would cause you to fail. Its no wonder some people dont like to deal with pedestrians! In fact, you just have to look here in Strathmore. I dont know if Im overly sensitive, but doesnt it seem to you, that young people feel they not only have the right to cross any road, but they dare you not to stop! Sometimes its a bit tempting to give them a little vehicle nudge, but Im too old to go to Prison! Sometimes turning onto a street can turn in to a wonderful family memory. We have friends who were driving around with their two little kids in an American city. This was before GPS or cell phones, and they turned on the road they needed. What they did NOT know, was that they had just become one of the many vehicles in a gay pride parade! They were now in the parade, and many of the side roads had been barricaded. All they could do was smile and wave, frantically looking for an escape! I wonder if their kids wondered why so many spectators were looking so stunned, as they waved BACK! It was 1985, Deb and her mom had been commuting daily to Calgary from Canmore to complete a Summer session. Deb was finishing her B.ED. and her mom, a M.ED. Debs mom had just gotten a new red Mustang as a congratulations gift, and they were driving in Calgary. They raced to an intersection at 16 Ave. N.W. and Pat had braked. She had gotten out a bit far in the crossing, so she had to back up a touch. The young person next to her smiled and revved his engine. Pat must have been feeling her oats, and she revved back! The light hit green and both cars took off Deb and her mom, backwards! She had left it in reverse, and had to slam on the brakes! Another guy in a car yelled, giveer Momma! Deb slowly slumped into the passenger seat, while her mom sheepishly giggled. My son Brennen had a fun thing he liked to do with a pal, while driving. Sometimes when hed see a group of girls standing on a sidewalk, or even better, a parking lot, hed pull his car up close to the girls and on the passenger side. Then hed put the car in park, put down the power window hold the button down, and just sit there waiting. Sure enough, his buddy would be mortified embarrassed and sit there blushing. I guess it was Brennens favourite driving game! Driving can definitely have its share of laughs and embarrassments! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. Letters to the editor

Major concerns with rural fire issues

To the Editor I am writing to express my disgust with the recent conduct of the Strathmore Rural Fire Fighting Association (SRFFA). I am a tax paying resident and citizen of Carseland and have been trying to join SRFFA, because Im concerned that those of us in the south hall protection area are not fairly represented. There are several things that have happened recently to support my concern. The SRFFA required non-members to attend three consecutive meetings to sit on the Board. Feeling that I could contribute to the Board, I had attended meetings and the May 27th would have been my second. However, I, along with all other non-members were ousted from the meeting. New rules for eligibility to join are being created ad hoc. I understand that SRFFA has now been informed that banning us non-members will not be tolerated at future meetings. However, that doesnt get rid of the feeling that those of us representing Carseland are not welcome on SRFFA. I expect to be guaranteed a seat on the SRFFA and I expect any willing resident within the Carseland protection zone to be permitted to be a member of SRFFA, unless guilty of criminal conduct. Secondly, this association is managing monies from the public purse and should be open to scrutiny and better oversight from Wheatland County. Prior to the decision to remove non-members from the meeting on May 27th, we were privy to a board discussion, regarding a requirement in the bylaws for an annual audit of the SRFFA financials. The members of the SRFFA agreed that a self audit would be acceptable. I say the SRFFA is using corrupt practices, especially in light of the recent funding problems within the association. Thirdly, our Fire Chief Curt Emde and his Deputy Chief, Ryan Hausworth, were dismissed due to not reporting an incident regarding an alleged harassment of a community member. The allegations were found by the RCMP to be unsubstantiated. The dismissal left the Carseland community members afraid that adequate coverage was not being provided and it did great damage to good men who have given our community many volunteer hours. Will a formal public apology and re-instatement be forth coming? Lastly, the Emergency first response vehicle was moved from the Carseland Fire Hall to the Strathmore Fire Hall. Again, it left residents angry and afraid that coverage is not being provided to our area of the zone. I understand that there is an on-going review regarding the feasibility of separating the Carseland Fire Association from SRFFA. The decision-making procedures of the SFFRA continually deny us a voice. Carseland citizens are continually subjected to unreasonable treatment from the SRFFA. I want these issues resolved. Carseland needs to separate from the SFFRA and start their own Fire Association. Alternatively, if Wheatland County makes the decision to keep Carseland Fire Association under the heavy hand of SRFFA, the current SRFFA members should be removed and a board consisting of all new members should be put in place, using a fair and democratic process. The residents of Carseland/ Speargrass and area should be guaranteed an equal number of seats and votes. Regards, Tina Scott Carseland

Important changes to shelterbelt

To the Editor Thank you for the opportunity to provide my information on the Prairie Shelterbelt Program. The agriculture scene on the Canadian Prairies has changed over the past few decades. It is important that these changes be recognized and government programs are modified so that they are effective and efficient. The Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) was established in the 1930s to take care of environmental issues at that time. It has done a good job over the years, but for the most part, those initiatives have been taken care of and corrected. The federal role in providing trees to farmers can be traced back to the early 1900s with the need to help people immigrating to Canada to shelter their homes and farms from the elements. Later on, when the federal government needed to intervene during the combined emergencies of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl conditions of the 1930s, helping farmers to plant shelterbelts was an effective way of dealing with the severe soil erosion occurring on the Prairies. Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada (AAFC) is actively exploring opportunities to transfer staff and all associated assets to interested third parties who could acquire ownership of the distribution program. AAFC is making every effort to ensure that the closure of the Prairie Shelterbelt Program is done in a manner that maximizes the future economic and employment opportunities for Indian Head, Saskatchewan. AAFC will continue to develop agro-forestry science, technology and genetic materials at the site in Indian Head to help ensure the future sustainability of the agricultural land resource base and improve the competitive position of the agriculture sector. While shelterbelts continue to be useful to farmers, modern farmers can make decisions about soil preservation and land management without getting free trees from the federal government. The Agro-forestry Development Centre (visit: www.agr.gc.ca) continues to offer advice and information on planning, establishing and maintaining Shelterbelts. Wheatland Council, along with other municipalities, certainly could become involved and work with a coalition looking to continue a shelterbelt program at Indian Head. The Government of Canada will no longer be involved after December 2013. Since the announcement of the end of the program in 2012, non-government organizations, coalitions, farmers and other supporters have been encouraged to come forward to continue the operation. Sincerely, Kevin Sorenson, MP (Crowfoot)

Did You Know?

The traditional birthstone for June is the pearl? It is a symbol of purity and is the only gem that comes from living sea creatures. The flower for the month of June is the rose? Roses are a symbol of love and appreciation. They are also known as the flower of passion.

Letters to the editor

Correction
On page 15 of the May 31 edition of the Strathmore Times there was a mistake in the article, Summer reading program returns. It states that the program runs from July 23 to August 23. The correct dates are actually July 2 to August 23. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Putting an end to theft

To the Editor Regarding the issue of April 18, involving the loss of my tool case which included specialized tools needed for my work of Piano Technology, I do want to pursue this issue ... this loss has affected my livelihood and my life immensely. There must be more exposure to this violation and others, which, as I talk to more and more people, these violations are happening all too frequently in our neighborhoods ... all over town ... with very limited restitution. Many are affected but many of these crimes actually go unreported. I believe that it is important to keep the details of these issues alive and exposed, rather than being so complacent with the attitude of what happens, happens ... theres nothing we can do. We, as society, should not be so complacent - these and other violations will only become more rampant. The attitude of helplessness and ultimate acceptance of being violated by so many truly disturbs me, as bad seeds are being nurtured here. As a kid growing up I was taught with strong encouragement that if its not yours, do not touch it! The Golden Rule in everything - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Im hesitant to point blame to the youth of our community ... but there has been witnessing by many of youth being out late at night/early morning with nothing better to do. Walking the streets, some perhaps seeking entry into vehicles, homes, garages. Even if a door is left unlocked, rite of entry is not warranted without the owners permission. We have to be comfortable to trust. As our community/town continues to become more populated it is even more important that awareness be broadened in homes and schools, and to discuss and discern how we can make this issue one of vital importance to help eliminate crime in Strathmore to make it a safe and appealing town to live in. Regards, Kathie L. Zakresky Strathmore

Pass the Salt

As I was reading this week, my mind moved to some of the wisdom expressed in Ecclesiastes 3:1 - 8: To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. A time for giving birth, a time for dying; a time for planting, a time for uprooting what has been planted; ... a time for mourning. a time for dancing; ... a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking; ... a time for war, a time for peace. Looking around our world, from individual household to the international sphere, these things can be appreciated in todays life. Babies are born and elders pass on around us. The Circle of Life keeps rolling on. Seeding is just about complete hereabouts, and weeding and spraying will try to save the good crop for the harvest while reducing the confounding weeds. Celebrations can and do happen to mark milestone of life, whether the celebration of the life of a friend as in a funeral, or the milestone passages for children, graduates, marriages, childbirth, and wedding anniversaries among us. That people stay safe and experience joy while doing this is something I pray for. Holding ones tongue at times, and speaking up for what is right or the oppressed or the weakest among us are both good things. Discerning when to do each is a skill requiring much practice. We can take solace that we have not endured war in our land in over 100 years. Pity the areas of the world in active conflict these days. Blessed be the Peacemakers should be on the mind of all of us. With these thoughts in mind, let us savour the pleasures, and endure the pangs of life in our community these days in this season of spring renewal. Trinity Open House success

On May 29, Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy held an open house, to show off their facility to parents of school aged children living in Strathmore and surrounding area. The Academy first opened its doors in the 2008-09 school year and at that time had 56 students. Now, as their fifth year comes to an end, the student count has grown to 115, ranging from pre-kindergarten through Grade 9. Parent volunteers Janine Lassu (l) and Jen Neufeld join teacher Kristen Odegard at the Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy open house on May 29.

Cool end to school year

Christopher Cool celebrates the year coming to an end for the preschoolers at Hope Community Covenant Church. On May 28, the three and four year old classes, along with their parents, assembled to watch Christopher Cool do his thing. The kids were thoroughly entertained, but sad to see the year come to an end. Christopher Cool (back) and Spencer Johansen.

Residents get last kick at the MDP

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The County is asking residents and ratepayers to speak up on initiatives put forward in the Draft Municipal Development Plan (MDP). All municipalities over 3500 people are required by the government to have an MDP. It is a thirty year plan which is reviewed every five years. It guides County policy on development issues of future land use, municipal services, infrastructure and facilities. They can be expanded to include guidelines for financial planning, social, physical, economic, cultural, and environmental development and programs. So, once initiatives are placed in the final draft and the bylaw is drafted and approved, residents will have to abide by its rules for another five years. This is your opportunity to tell us if you agree or disagree with the draft, and tell us what you would like to see instead, said Alex Taylor, Project Manager from Dillon Consulting who compiled the draft MDP. Taylor combined information for the draft from: Alberta Government requirements, reviews of the previous MDP, results from discussions with County Council and Development and Planning staff, and all the feedback given at open houses held in the community, or submitted in writing. He presented a clear, organized summary of the suggested draft at open houses held in Cheadle and Rosebud on May 27 and 28 respectively. The various levels of planning were outlined, and Taylor showed where a MDP fits in. He described the various plans and policies affected by it, right down to an individuals decision to build. He clarified more detailed information is developed in levels below the MDP, such as the Area Service Plans (ASP) and Land Use Bylaws. Taylor said the previous MDP had more context and this review is more specific and includes more policies. There is one third to one half new content in the revised MDP. The whole presentation and the previous 2006 MDP is posted on the County website www.wheatlandcounty.ca for residents and ratepayers to review, or they can pick up paper copies at the County office. Residents have all summer to review the plan and submit input for inclusion in the final plan, which is scheduled for presentation to Council in September. Other stakeholders, such as WID, School Boards and area industries will receive a copy of the draft for consideration at this time. The old MDP plan will be amended or replaced through a newly written bylaw, which must pass three readings and one public hearing. Rosebud School of the Arts offers support to left-out MRU arts students
Laureen F. Guenther Times Contributor Earlier this spring, when the Alberta government delivered a seven per cent cut, rather than the expected two per cent increase to the provinces post-secondary institutions, Calgarys Mount Royal University (MRU) responded by eliminating its art programs, stranding their current and prospective arts students. Paul Muir, Education Director at Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), wrote to MRUs board, urging them to reconsider their decision. He referred to the quote from Gabrielle Roy, featured on the Canadian twenty-dollar bill: Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts? Heres something that is significant enough to go on our $20 bills, yet its one of the first things that gets cut when cuts are being made, Muir says. The way we know not only ourselves, but the way we know ourselves from generation to generation, is through the arts. Its through storytelling ... Our whole cultural identity as a province is held in our storytelling. Muir says storytelling happens through music, visual art, theatre and dance. It might seem RSA would rejoice in the reduced competition brought on by the MRU program cancellation, but Muir doesnt take that perspective. In no way are we interested in being vultures, he said. His emphasis is on the cancellations harm to the arts community. With fewer places to train, said Muir, ultimately, youre still hurting the (arts) industry. Obviously, we care about the students who now dont have a place to go that were going to MRU. Rosebud School of the Arts plans to express that support for MRU theatre students at a two-day Open House in the Epcor Centres Learning Arts Centre (across from the Baraka Cafe) in Calgary, from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., on June 13 and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., on June 14. Its for the public, but we really do want to make a special invitation to the MRU students to say hey, we care about the fact that this cancellation is happening, and we care about you, and we care about arts training in general, said Muir. If Rosebud School of the Arts does pick up a few students, of course it benefits Rosebud School of the Arts, but my hope is that the greater benefit actually is for the student. Our philosophy toward education here at Rosebud is that it actually is all about the student. A highlight of the Open House will be a free lunchtime concert starting at 12:15 p.m., featuring the Cotton Patch Gospel band, currently performing in Rosebuds summer musical. Muir said everyone will enjoy the bluegrass music regardless of their usual musical genre. Youre going to be tapping your foot to it, even if (bluegrass isnt) your cup of tea, Muir said. I would just encourage people to come out. There will be Rosebud actors and instructors there. I think it will just be a really good thing for people to have a chance to talk about what Rosebud is, what we have to offer, and actually find out directly from the people that work here. The day before the Open House, RSA will participate in a rally planned by Save Our Fine Arts (SOFA), to be held in the Epcor Centres Max Bell Theatre, at 7:30 p.m. on June 12, organized to protest the deep provincial cuts to postsecondary education. Were a private institution. We dont receive public money anyway, Muir said, but supports the cause in spite of their funding. RSAs wish is to express support for the staff and students of institutions that are affected. I hope it feels like a response that is in solidarity with our colleagues at Mount Royal University, and that we really do want to partner with them. In fact, 10 to 15 percent of people who have a TIA will have a stroke within three months. Symptoms of a TIA are sudden and may include confusion; difficulty speaking or understanding; numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, particularly on one side of the body; vision trouble in one orboth eyes; trouble walking; dizziness; and/or loss of balance or coordination. Interrupted blood flow to the brain is often behind a TIA. A lack of blood and oxygen in the brain often leads to the temporary symptoms described above. Should you or a loved one exhibit any of the aforementioned symptoms, seek medical help immediately, even if the symptoms feel or appear as if they are subsiding. A quick response might just prevent a full-on stroke.

A transient ischemic attack, often referred to as a mini stroke, is an event thats similar to a stroke. When a person has a TIA, the symptoms are just like those of a stroke, but they last less than 24 hours before disappearing. However, that disappearance does not mean a person is in the clear, as a TIA is a serious warning sign of stroke. According to the National Stroke Association, up to 40 percent of people who experience a TIA will go on to have an actual stroke, and studies have shown that nearly half of all strokes occur within a day or two of having a TIA. But even those people who do not have a stroke within 48 hours of having a TIA are still at

Over the hill and liking the view

Colleen Best & Janet FitzGerald Submitted Have you ever wondered why so many older people are smiling? Lets think about that for a moment. Most seniors have a warm place to live. The kids are grown up and out of the nest. They only work if they choose to, and they are finished with having other people tell them what to do! True, they might have a few more aches and pains, but when your most burning question is What will I do today? a sore knee and a slightly leaky bladder are mere inconveniences. Most seniors have a sense of satisfaction and anticipation around their newfound freedom, because theyve paid their dues and now they get to sample life from a huge smorgasbord of possibilities. Forrest Gump once said, Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what youre gonna get. But thats okay, as long as you enjoy chocolate and surprises! This wonderful attitude is what we refer to as positive aging. Even if every day isnt a bed of roses, most seniors are thankful to be on this side of the grass, or as one put it, Id rather be over the hill than buried under it! Its not so much about having a big wad of money in the bank, or even having 100 friendsits more about learning to let go of the things that make you feel old and move on with a fresh look at life. While doing some research on positive aging, we discovered a book entitled From Aging to Saging: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. It is described on www.amazon.ca as a book in which Reb Zalman shares his journey to find a way to turn aging into the most meaningful and joyous time in his life. The author shows readers how to create an aging process for themselves that is full of adventure, passion, mystery and fulfillment, rather than anxiety. By harnessing the power of the spirit, as well as explaining exactly how to become a sage in their own community, he gives readers a helpful and moving way to use their own experiences to nurture, heal, and perhaps even save a younger generation from the prison of how we typically regard aging. Positive aging is: Taking advantage of opportunities to become contented and fulfilled as we age because we have experienced much and now know better what to do and not to do to be happy. Learning to relax demands placed on us by others and ourselves. We dont feel the need to be super heroes. Forgiving ourselves and others more easily because we have learned it is more work to carry a grudge. Taking chances more frequently, as we dont fuss over a failure. Who cares? Try again. Acknowledging that smart eating and frequent exercising are good choices, which will help us live longer and have a better quality of life. Realizing that getting involved is more fun than being bored, and it opens doors for us to communicate and grow. Doing things that bring us joy, peace and fulfillment and not wasting time on negative stuff. View helping others, learning and growing as opportunities not obligations. What does positive aging look like? You go to a party and you feel out of place, but you still accept and like yourself for who you are. Its learning to SKYPE on the computer so you can keep in touch with your grandchildren. Its buying a bicycle so you can ride downtown on Saturdays. Its volunteering at the local school to help young students with their reading skills. Its taking a road trip with your best friend, to finally see the Rockies up close. You go to a meeting and finally have the guts to stand up and say what you really think. Being grateful that wrinkles dont hurt. You fall on the stairs and hurt your ankle, but are grateful that you didnt break both legs. You finally take that painting class that youve been putting off for years because you were too busy. When youre beyond the shame of asking a person their name when youve met them several times before. Going to the hairdresser and deciding to try a new haircut or a new style.

Wheatland MDP set to protect agriculture and rural lifestyles

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Alex Taylor, Project Manager from Dillon Consulting said combined voices in the county are calling for a focus on agriculture and preservation of our rural lifestyle. Taylor draws his conclusions from the combined input given to the new Municipal Development Plan. The MDP draft suggests a clear process is needed for development projects, including provisions for water resources, environmental protection, good roads and infrastructure systems. All developments are recommended to be sustainable and hold their own on an economic and financial basis. We developed a renewed vision for the County. We believe it should strive for what everyone in the county wants and all the goals and policies should stem from that vision, said Taylor. The new vision statement was based in part on previously approved mission statements used by the County. It is: Wheatland County seeks a balanced approach to sustainable, wellplanned development, which enhances and protects our agricultural and natural areas and resources over the long term. We will promote a quality of life that reflects our rural heritage, and ensures a County that we can all be proud of. Sustainable levels of services and infrastructure will help our communities to grow for the benefit of all, promoting our community spirit. The key policies which support that vision hinge on three goals: the preservation of heritage, management of growth and development of County services. Heritage preservation begins by preserving farmland, so residential development will be encouraged around existing residential areas. Agricultural values will be promoted by developing more variety in agricultural use and encouraging responsible farming practises. The prior MDP allowed only one parcel subdivided from a section of land. The new plan suggests increasing subdivision to five parcels per each section. At first glance, this policy seems to contradict preservation, but Linda Henrickson, Wheatland County Project Manager says it really discourages overdevelopment. The intention is to limit residential, so in general a three acre parcel is what is preferred, because it makes sure there is enough for another field (septic) if your field fails. If it is beyond that, five to 10 acres, it becomes an agricultural small holding rather than a residential parcel, and beyond 40 acres it becomes agricultural general, said Henrickson. The change was in response to demands for more flexibility. In the past, families wanted to provide opportunities for family members to build independent residences, yet stay on the family farm. They also wanted options for un-farmable areas, or wanted opportunities to sell small portions for economic relief in times of financial hardships. County planners considered that beyond five parcels, the requirements for an expensive Area Structure Plan and municipal servicing would discourage the property owners from considering residential development and keep land in agricultural use. An ASP can cost anywhere from $12,000 to over $30,000. The new MDP recommends removal of Subdivision Credit Application Transfer (SCAT) program for un-farmable land, as it is not feasible under a five parcel policy. It would be replaced by a Transfer Development Plan (TDP) that is based on land credits, which could be sold to others, or transferred for equitable compensation. The TDP is used in the U.S. and by the County of Big Horn in Alberta, but exact details about provincial plans for a similar program havent been released. It is expected to be implemented within five to 10 years. We are making sure if the provincial government comes forward with that in the next few years, the County will be able to follow in that direction, said Taylor. Natural areas were to be preserved from development encroachment, by incorporating environmental reviews and protection for environmentally sensitive area and native vegetation. Suggestions for strong water policies included making inventories and maps of groundwater, surface water, riparian and wetland areas. Naturalized and low impact plantings were encouraged on borders to surface water, and good storm water mitigation plans were suggested. Strathmore and Eagle Lake have been designated as the largest potential residential growth zones, followed by areas surrounding towns, villages and hamlets. Potential industrial and commercial growth was suggested to follow along currently established corridors. Tree planting and use of naturalized landscapes within developments was also encouraged. Communal water and wastewater services are discouraged; instead, they should link into existing infrastructures. The MDP continues the policy of discouraging private wells for areas that are already have servicing. So, in the hamlets that have servicing, no private wells are permitted in those areas and water trucking discouraged, said Taylor. Water and wastewater plans would be required for new developments, with suggestions that County water services are metered, keeping in mind conservation and Green practises. Composting plans would be encouraged. New policies were needed to develop the Countys historic and rural identity. Promotion of agro-tourism for economic development was listed. Historic building reconstruction, encouraging historic housing designs in new developments and the naming of streets after historical figures, and developing a historical site inventory were recommended. Promotion of tourist attractions stemming from a tourism inventory was introduced. The development of partnerships would encourage parks and recreation opportunities within communities and new developments. These areas could include pathway and trail development. Health and safety of residents would be provided and developed through service delivery partnerships; and needs would be targeted through periodic assessments of emergency services. Encouragement could be given for new developments to use environmental design to discourage criminal activity. Hamlets and municipal communities were recommended building sites for institutional complexes and it was recommended they situate close to others already established within the County. Effective long term planning for development and maintenance of roadways could be delivered through coordinated asset management. Retail and Commercial development is encouraged as an economic base for hamlets. Industrial development would develop in the current established areas along Hwy 1, west of Carseland and along Hwy 21 with buffers set up for residential areas. Increasing transportation accesses with visual, noise, dust and traffic mitigation policies were suggested. Agro and home-based businesses could be encouraged. Mitigation policies would also apply to natural resource development within the County jurisdiction. It was recommended that mapping of natural resources within the County take place to facilitate better management practises. Any natural resource development was suggested to be clustered, to prevent adverse impacts on environmentally sensitive and residential areas. Development of sustainable and community appropriate energy plans were encouraged, with suggestions for impact, setback and decommissioning studies. Emphasis could be placed energy conservation practises. The entire MDP draft is available for review on the County website at www. wheatlandcounty.ca and residents are encouraged to submit any suggestions or comments until September.

New coach, new program

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Dan MacDonald has been appointed as the new head coach of the AAA Midget UFA Bisons. A previous scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning and head coach of the WHLs Red Deer Rebels, MacDonald is not only excited to be joining a competitive hockey team, but a program that is now combining the Bisons with Strathmore High School to study and to train. Its a really unique experience for the players, MacDonald said. Its going to be way better situation for them because they wont have to travel so much, we can spend more time together, and they can gain from the school experience so they can feel part of the school as a group. Strathmore Highs Associate Principal Doug Raycroft agrees, that the school experience will present leadership opportunities, ability to share resources, and take their student athletes to another level. I think it really goes well with what we try to do, said Raycroft. Were all about trying to help our students to be successful, in every wayathletics and academics. Raycroft was unaware of any other AAA Midget teams that offer a similar program, a large advantage to the Bisons, but did say some parents could have some concerns. What would happen at the end of the season, when the student wants to return to their hometown school? Were small enough that we know everyone, but were big enough that we offer a full gamut of options and core classes and AP classes, Raycroft said. So for us

to transition or communicate with the school theyre going back to, and making an easy transition, it shouldnt be an issue at all. Dan MacDonald himself was a teacher at Red Deer College (leading the schools hockey team for three years), and also coached the citys AAA Midget team for five years. In those five years we did really well, we went to four national championships, MacDonald said. So I certainly know the needs of the players, and what they need to work on, and how to work with that group. Thats what I bring. Thats why they asked me to do it. Among his many accolades, MacDonald was named Alberta Junior Hockey Coach of the Year in 2008, and Alberta Major Midget Hockey League Coach of the Year in 1995. He hopes to win a league championship in the AMHL, then possibly move onto the Pacific Championship and Nationals (which hes made it to - twice). MacDonald knows he can lead some Bison players to the AJHL, where he once coached for the Olds Grizzlies and Okotoks Oilers. Thats what the kids want to get to, he said. You still have to play as a team theres not doubt about those things but ultimately were trying to push on as many players as we can to reach the highest heights they can reach as hockey players. Thats what the first goal is development. Second goal would be, we want to see them succeed in their academics, and thats where the school partnership comes in. The third goal is to win a championship. I think you always play to win.

Anniversary recital for Expressions, the Dance Gallery

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Coming into its 30th season, Expressions, the Dance Gallery will be celebrating with a 30th Anniversary Showcase Recital, on June 22 at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Heather Thomas, artistic director and owner of the dance studio, runs all types of dance styles for dancers, ages three to 19: tap, ballet, jazz, musical theatre, contemporary, modern, acrobatics and hip hop. A few clients drive to Expressions all the way from Calgary, where Thomas used to own a previous studio. Some of them have been here all their life; even some of our teachers started when they were three, Thomas said. Our faculty sort of comes up through the ranks, so they know how we like things taught and the standard in everything that we do. Its great. If coaching doesnt appeal to the students, many of Thomas prodigies have gone on to do cruise lines, circus acts, aerial arts, and professional shows such as Second City and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. One Expressions graduate even placed top eight in So You Think You Can Dance Canada. Theres lots of things for kids to do once they graduate from this studio, it depends upon what their interests are, Thomas said. Registration is open this month for the upcoming season. Tickets for the Anniversary Showcase Recital can be purchased at the Dance Gallery for $26. All 170 students will be in the show, which begins at 4 p.m.

Local schools place at Zones

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Both Strathmore High and Holy Cross Collegiate sent athletes to compete at the South Central Zone High School Championships for track and field, at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary, on May 28. In spite of a little bad weather, SHS had 38 students compete, and finished with 136 points overall; Holy Cross sent less athletes, and finished with a point total of 63.38. Schools in the South Central Zone came with their best. It was an excellent meet for Strathmore High School, with three athletes and a relay team moving on to provincials, said Kyle Larson, Associate Principal of SHS. As a school, we placed seventh overall, which was an outstanding finish for the team. For track and field provincials, a team or participant must finish first or second in their event. The Girls 4x100m Relay, at the intermediate age, just missed out on first, with a total time of 54.13, but Jessica Murphy, Cassandra Fisk, Carter Jones, and Jade Balance will be representing Strathmore High once more at the next level. A score of 1.45m on Girls High Jump (Intermediate) qualified SHS Jessica Murphy for second place, moving onto provincials. Fellow teammate and highjumper Karly Larson also finished second to qualify, with a score of 1.35m she also tied for third in the Jr. Girls division with 20 points in all of her events. In the Boys Jr. 400m, Kyle Foster of Strathmore High School came in second, with a time of 55.66, and will also be representing his team in Alberta finals. The students were excellent representatives of their school, and the community, Associate Principal Larson said. From Holy Cross, Christopher OLeary placed second in the discus throw, with an accomplishment of 32.43m. He will join the three athletes and the relay team from SHS at Foothills Athletic Park once again, for provincials on June 7-8.

Elite Hockey Camp registration now open

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Five years ago, after a previous hockey school folded, Doug Raycroft recognized the towns need and created the Elite Hockey Development Camps. Now available for the entire month of August, are two programs: one for novice to peewee, and one for bantam to midget. We have the kids coming out from different age groups, and its developmental, so were teaching them and instructing them, but its also kind of a conditioning. Its high tempo stuff, to get them ready for the season, Raycroft said. Raycroft played junior hockey himself, and received a college scholarship to the United States. Afterwards, he coached junior, and has been helping with different hockey schools for over 20 years. Anyone is able to join, with roughly 25 spots in each program. Well take anyone that wants to. Its not really a learn-to-skate program, in the older group theres a lot of really good players, Raycroft said. We have quite a few that went onto the AA teams. Now theyre starting to go into midget and stuff and some have made junior hockey. So we have a lot of success stories. There is more to come, according to Raycroft. Hes confident some of his students will end up with college scholarships, just like he did. Sign up now, and visit www.elitehockeydevelopment.com for more details.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who came out to the 2nd Annual Spring Festival held on Saturday June 1st, 2013, as Mother Nature was kind enough to give us a beautiful day. A special thank you to Sobeys for donating water as part of our fund raising for Celebration of Lights, Brassard Greenhouses and the Pea Patch for donating the flowers for the raffles, Jane and Del Smith for the chips, Triple J Farms South for the Donuts and muffins. Thank you to the Vendors that came out that day for the event and Angie Hitch for doing the face painting. Strathmore Scouts parents be proud we appreciated all your help with set up and putting everything away. You are an amazing organization. Also to our volunteers who helped with the day. $1330 raised for the local food bank to help end hunger! The Encana Stage was rocking for 6 hours to help the food bank with the incredible talent of R&G Group, The Ampheads, Magesty, Liquid Light, Murray Cummings and Treble Sphere with Matt Hood from Moderately Adequate. These artists came from all over Alberta with their family and volunteers to benefit our food bank, at their own cost, we are very fortunate to have had them. The talent that they possess was incredible and we thank you all. We were enlightened at the colorful political tunes of the The Raging Grannies, thank you so much. To our volunteers Rick Clarke, Rhonda Leger, Matt Hood, Bobbi Jean Vickerage, Braydon Murphy, Wayne Johnston, Rheese McQuarrie, Suzanne Adamson, Brian Murphy, Rose Hamilik and the Strathmore Agriculture Society, without all of your support we could not have surpassed our goals, we are in awe of your efforts and very humbled. We held a raffle and silent auction to benefit the Wheatland Food Bank. We would like to thanks our sponsors, the Strathmore Times and Nuvision. Thanks also to all the following businesses and individuals for their donations. Days Inn, Mike Yeoman, Tinas No Frills, No Frills Gas, The Station, Napa, the Strathmore Times, Suzanne Adamson , Strathmore Golf, Dennis McNeill, Real Canadian Liquor, Travelodge, ATB, Queens Nails and Spa, Oxbow Golf, Runway Hair Design, All Genres DJ, Crowfoot Liquor, Boston Pizza, Home Hardware, Walmart, Lammles, Sobeys Liquor Store, Canadian Tire, A&W and Botsford Deli of Langdon. Strathmore Thunder U16 Girls have gone undefeated in league play, winning all twelve of their season games against players up to the age of 19.

Strathmore Thunder U16 undefeated at a higher level

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Theyre 12-0 in league play. Not only so, but the Strathmore Thunder Girls U16 baseball team is playing in a U19 midget division of Calgary Minor Ball. Weve gone a little bit more of a competitive route this year, said Coach Trevor Pollock. With optional practices starting last November and team practices beginning indoors in January, the girls have also been excelling at their weekend tournaments. On May 10, the girls traveled to Saskatoon, losing once and finishing third. On Victoria Day Weekend the girls played in Wetaskiwin, losing in the finals to Lacombe. The girls travel to Red Deer on June 8, and Lloydminister on June 21, before heading back to Wetaskiwin for provincials in July. A lot of these girls played in the summer games last year, said Pollock. To be really honest, I havent coached a team where the girls have gelled so closely, considering many of them didnt know each other at the beginning of the year. Theyre a real good group. Last years team won the bantam division in Calgary Minor Ball, and this years team is made partially from that roster, including girls from Strathmore, Chestermere and Calgary. Weve combined a couple of different teams, Pollock said. Theyre playing girls in the midget category, in league play this year, and then in our tournaments we play our regular category. Were trying to get them prepared for stronger pitching and stronger batting.

Four Strathmore inline boys qualify for Canada West Cup

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Wheatland Inline Hockey Association will be well represented at the Canada West Inline Cup this year, with Koadi Kozma, Tate Barnett, Matt Holkovic, and Christopher Rebeyka being named to the Alberta squad. British Columbia and Saskatchewan also gather their best 13 to 15-year-old inline hockey players to face off in the tournament; however Alberta is the only province that has enough talent for two teams. The Canada West Cup takes place opposite years of the Alberta Summer Games, which Barnett and Kozma both took place in last year. Kozma, a goalie, idolizes Tim Thomas and hopes to make the NHL one day. Hes been playing inline hockey for four years. The guys in the tryouts were really good, and fun to play with, so Im really excited, centre Tate Barnett said. Matt Holkovic, who plays

Strathmore Jumpstart
Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Strathmore Canadian Tire had an initial fundraising goal of $8,000 towards the Jumpstart program, but they surpassed that with a total amount of $8,166. Unfortunately, it wasnt enough to bring Chicago Blackhawk Jonathan Toews to town, as Dauphin, Manitobas Canadian Tire location raised $20,000 and sold a total of 10,000 Red Balls for the campaign. Although it is disappointing not to have won the visit from Jonathan Toews, placing first in our region, sixth nationally, and raising over $8,000 for Jumpstart is still a great accomplishment so I still feel like we won, said Shelley Orford, co-owner of the Strathmore Canadian Tire. She co-owns the store with her husband Randy. The community support for the campaign was fantastic. I would like to thank everyone who came out to support us on Jumpstart Day, and bought a Red Ball during the month of May, she said, also noting special appreciation to the Wheatland Kings for their appearance at the BBQ on May 25. Other locations in Ontario, Manitoba, and New Brunswick surpassed Strathmores numbers, who at one time were fourth in fundraising. Not only did Strathmore raise the most in Alberta, but the most in Western Canada as well including British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Its hard to feel like we lost when we raised awareness, Orford said. One of three Canadian families cannot afford to enroll their children in sports. Jumpstart changes that, assisting financially disadvantaged kids in recreation, by covering registration costs, helping with transportation fees, and paying for equipment. Since 2005, the Jumpstart program has helped over 580,000 kids ages four to 18 across Canada. One hundred per cent of customer donations go directly to those children in need.

forward and defense, said he felt fairly confident in himself and his teammates, as Alberta has won the tournament quite frequently. Ive played ice hockey pretty much all my life I guess, and then this is my first year of inline, said Rebeyka, a forward and defenseman as well. Its just fun. You can go to big tournaments, like the one were going to, which is pretty cool. Alberta chose approximately 12 players for each team, including two goalies. The Canada West Cup takes place July 4 to 7, in Sherwood Park.

Pre Kindergarten a Roaring Success at Trinity Christian Academy

Lions, tigers, and many other animals greet our pre kindergarten students regularly at TCA. The fun and creative Animated Literacy Program, a classroom frog to feed, watching butterflies and lady bugs hatch, dressing up in animal costumes, and taking a field trip to the Calgary Zoo are just a few of the animal themed activities taking place. This Pre Kindergarten program currently runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:15 - 11:30 and costs $100/ month. There are no parental requirements such as making snacks or signing up, however the door to Mrs. Hunters classroom is always open for parents to volunteer or prospective families to visit. The popularity of Trinitys program is growing and there are already enough students registered for the fall to have two separate sessions. Whether they will be Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday mornings or Tuesday/Thursday mornings and afternoons has yet to be decided. A strong academic program is demonstrated through the literacy program, themed months tied to letters, numbers, colors and shapes. The teaching is reinforced by stories, songs, Come and check us out at our Open creative centres and crafts. Virtues of respect, kindness and sharing are integral to the day to day interactions between students. Preparedness for kindergarten is also woven in with opportunities to problem solve, become more independent in their tasks, ad growing expectations of behaviour. The students have participated in serving others by collecting loose change ($150) to make boxes for Samaritans Purse. They have also experienced sharing their talents with residents of Sagewood Lodge that included a ride on the school bus with other Trinity students. At TCA, these Pre Kindergarten students have been able to get to know some of the older students, making gingerbread houses with Grade 7/8 class, participating in the Christmas concert with a poem and Easter chapel with a skit. The year has not gone without fun celebrations, including a Snowman party, Birthday party, Valentines party. Wrapping all these together for a positive and memorable first educational experience are a committed and caring teacher and EA, who work together with the rest of the TCA staff to create a safe place that nurtures and grows our children.

Some of the younger participants warm up before partaking in the fifth Annual Chinook Credit Union 5km/10km Run/Walk for Foothills Advocacy In Motion, a volunteer association that supports those with developmental disabilities.

Charity lamb sold

The Standard 4-H Sheep Club auctioned off their charity lamb, that was raised by Kylee Hebbes, at 4-H on Parade this past weekend in Calgary. Kylee spoke to the crowd about her past experiences she has had as a cardiology patient at Alberta Childrens Hospital. She asked people to help her give back to the hospital that has done so much for her. John and May Lockhart of Calgary did exactly that. John and May lost a son to Hodgkins Disease in 1985 at the age of 19. They started the Doug Lockhart Memorial Fund and to date has raised around $50,000. Nubby the lamb weighed 100 lbs. and he sold for $60/lb. Through their generosity Kylee and her 4-H Club were able to raise $6,000 for Alberta Childrens Hospital.

The final concert, for the Strathmore High School and Crowther Memorial Junior High School musical ensembles, was held at Strathmore High on May 31. This was the last of three concerts held throughout the school year, under the direction of Bryan Allsopp who teaches band at both schools. The concert followed a barbeque organized by the Strathmore Public School Music Parents Association, a volunteer group established to help raise funds to support music education and related initiatives.
