The DRS PS880 PhotoScribe Imaging Mark Reader

The PS880 is a high-speed double-sided automatic Optical Mark and Image Reader. The PS880 - a robust, reliable reader designed for high duty cycles, is suitable for a wide range of large volume data capture exercises including examination processing, complex elections, electoral and refugee registration, ID cards, census work, pathology lab data processing and other large scale surveys.

The DRS PS880 offers access to optical mark reading and imaging through a seamless integration of the two technologies. It is primarily used for applications benefiting from traditional OMR for category data as well as drop-out imaging. Utilising the very latest in contact imaging head technology, the PS880 captures high quality, full duplex, bitonal and greyscale images and clips. The PS880 Reader Gives the ability to clip multiple regions from a form and save them to disk (or capture to memory) in individually selectable formats. Bitonal clips have independent threshold levels and the compression levels of greyscale clips can also be set on an individual basis. Both OMR and barcode capture are available simultaneously with image capture giving total flexibility at full rated throughput. Clipping regions on the fly reduces storage and post-processing costs. Relevant data is available immediately. Clips can be captured and stored in the correct orientation regardless of the orientation of the forms when scanning. Drop-out imaging ensures OMR compatibility and masks non-vital parts of the form, this further reducing storage and post-processing costs.

Application Software DRS SOSKitW software is available to quickly configure the PS880 for a particular application and to process OMR forms and booklets with the added benefit of imaging. More specialised applications can be created using the developer plug-in capabilities built into DRS SOSKitW. DRS Data & Research Services plc Established in 1969, DRS has over thirty years experience in automated data capture, and provides a range of products and services: OMR forms design & print: ISO9002 accredited print facilities make DRS one of the world leaders in specialised OMR and data entry form and booklet production. Mechanical & Hardware Features 600 sheet passive input hopper 600 sheet passive output stacker 100 sheet passive alternative stacker Front & rear 200dpi contact image sensors illuminated via LEDs (red or infrared options other colours available on request) Passive retard pad to aid separation of sheets as they are picked Doubles detector to prevent double sheet scanning Servo controlled open path paper transport Optional interactive transport printer Context sensitive push button (on/off, purge etc) LCD display 2 lines, 32 characters for operator feedback and status messages Integral NT-based PC (specification dependent on fitted options) OMR Capabilities European standard. 5 tracks p/inch, 40 data tracks USA standard. 6 tracks p/inch, 47 data tracks Custom track densities can be configured for specialist forms DRS SOS decodes are supported to provide backward compatible OMR interpretation Vertically orientated barcode (track based) Image Capabilities Simplex or duplex imaging Images captured at 200dpi, 8bit greyscale Reduction to bitonal (black & white) via grey-level thresholding Clipping of regions of interest (ROI) under application control (multiple clips/pages, including whole page) Automatic saving of images/clips to memory or disk as 8bit jpeg or 1,4 or 8bit tiff rle group IV Transfer of image to application programme while sheet in scanner Barcode interpretation - any orientation Greyscale images available at 2, 4 and 8bit colour-depth (4, 16 and 256 grey-levels) Maximum image width is 215mm

Throughput & Performance A fully configured PS880 maintains a throughput of up to 7500 full duplex A4 forms/hour while reading OMR data and capturing bitonal or jpeg clips to disk. Large clip areas (eg full duplex) can reduce throughput. Typical throughputs in different scenarios:
Traditional OMR 7000-7500 forms/hr

OMR & collect image clips 5000-7500 forms/hr (depends on clip total area and image format) Capture & save full duplex bitonal A4 tiffs (no OMR) Retrieve & correct images on-line (specialist application) 4500-6500 forms/hr

1000-5000 forms/hr

Rates assume application is checking data on every sheet and conditionally routing them to output hoppers as appropriate. The PS880 seamlessly integrates all of the benefits of OMR with the flexibility of images. Any given application can use the best of each to achieve a particular goal. The DRS PS880 means that there is no longer a need to trade accuracy for flexibility. Form Dimensions Maximum form size at rated speed 325 x 227mm Maximum form size at slower speed 356 x 227mm Minimum form size 150 x 85mm Maximum form weight 130gsm Minimum form weight 70gsm
