Paulding County Fair begins June 10

PAULDING - Now that school is out, the kids are scrambling to put the finishing touches on their 4-H and FFA projects. The Paulding County Fair is right around the corner, ready or not! This years edition runs Monday, June 10 through Saturday, June 15 and has lots of new venues to enjoy as a participant or onlooker. Once again, admittance is free. Continued maintenance and improvement projects have been underway this spring. Grounds improvements range from renovated bathrooms to reroofing on several buildings and residing projects to remodeling the secretarys and fair board offices. Games and rides are being provided by D&D Putting and Amusements Inc. All will be open from 1 until 10 p.m. daily. Grenko Pony Rides and Games will also be represented all week. GMH Snyder Farms will have a mechanical bull on the fairgrounds June 10-14. Seven rides will fill the grassy area of the midway. Also available for a fee are putt golf and carnival games, which will be along the racetrack. The arcade has been moved to the concrete apron at the Youth Leadership Building. Space formerly taken by the arcade will be part of the old fashioned fair area. Paulding County Senior Fair Board president, Tim Shafer, is excited about this years fair. Were getting bigger and better every year. If youre not here, youre missing something. There is something for everybody. All throughout the day activities are going on with multiple events in the evenings. Harness racing at the Paulding County Fair is a long-standing tradition. Races begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 1213. Plans are for six heats each evening. Trotting bred pony races will be run between heats on Wednesday night. Organizers are again planning a parade of Kentucky Derby-style hats for Thursday night before the races start. Winner of the parade will get the honor of riding in the starting gate that evening. Pull-in and weigh-in of junior fair animal projects are on Sunday, so all entries will be ready for opening day 8 a.m. veterinarian checks. We might be a small fair, but weve got everything the bigger fairs do, said Shaffer in closing. And thanks to our corporate sponsors, we dont have to charge.

Thursday, June 13 Veterans Day

MONDAY Opening day activities begin at 9 a.m., but reach a climax in the evening when the junior fair royalty takes center stage. A prince and princess contest is followed by the junior fair parade around the grounds at 6:30 p.m. Immediately following will be the coronation of the junior fair king and queen at 7 p.m. Evening entertainment includes pony pulls, corn hole tournament and Morse Family Gospel Singers. TUESDAY Senior citizens will be honored as June 12 is slated as Senior Day. Special activities await them in the Brenda Thomas Senior Pavilion throughout the morning. the evening. Winners will qualify to compete at districts, state, and eventually nationals. Classes are set by age groups. Sign up is the day of the event. Thunder of the Night band show makes its second annual appearance in front of the grandstand. This year all three schools will be represented in the concert, acting as the opening act for the featured grandstand act, Jamison Road. Jamison Road is a three-person group that performs country that rocks. They are from the Cincinnati/Kentucky area. Ticket giveaways including all access passes are currently underway through 105.7 The Bull radio, which will provide a DJ as emcee for the concert. Evening entertainment will also include comedian and ventriloquist David Crone.

WEDNESDAY The days slate of events is stuffed full of junior fair shows and judgings before harness racing in the evening. Also providing entertainment that evening will be John Currant and the Renegade, a country band from Fort Wayne. THURSDAY Veterans Day activities are planned in the senior pavilion for June 14 through early evening. New this year is a choir show in the pavilion at 3:30 p.m. as part of the veterans day event. Several groups from local schools will entertain. The always entertaining open swine show gets under way at 6 p.m. Of special interest are the Over and Out and Peewee showmanship classes. Harness racing and a performance by the Muleskinner Band

close out the evenings entertainment. FRIDAY Junior fair judgings and shows come to a close this day, climaxing with the Showman of Showmen contest at 4 p.m. New this year is the Paulding County 500 Race. This will be a drag race involving pedal cars for kids of all ages. Trophies will be presented to the winners of age categories 5-8, 9-11, and 12 and up (including adult). Sign up is the day of the competition, held along the road west of the main gate. Evening events include an open beef show, Tri-State Diesel shootout truck pull and a Junk Yard Band concert. SATURDAY Hungry fair goers can visit the Farmers Care breakfast sponsored by the local Farm Bureau in the pavilion. Junior fair animal projects will be taken through the sale ring during the annual auction beginning at 9 a.m. Polls will open for the director election at noon in the fair board office and will remain open until 4 p.m. The much anticipated mud volleyball competition, and open rabbit and goat shows fill the afternoon hours. Closing the weeks activities will be the always popular Paulding County Idol followed by country singer Matt Enik in the pavilion. Enik is a 19-year-old native of Parkersburg, W.Va. now living in Nashville who working with Capital and Sony records for a possible contract. His local appearance is part of his United I Stand concert tour. Mixed Motor Sports from Van Wert will be conducting mud races with a $2,500 purse at the grandstand beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Information released for domestic dept. fair entries

Why not be thinking about the Paulding County Fair and becoming a participant rather than just an observer? Preparations are set for several events housed in the Grange Building during the Paulding County Fair. Domestic arts department is always looking for more entries. These areas of competition include cooking, baking, all kinds of sewing and needlework, artistic endeavors and photography. We want to see the Grange Building FULL, said department head Ellie Townley. I want to see people take an active part in the open completion. The county fair is all about displaying local talent. Bring it out and well display it, she continued. Entries in all areas close at 5 p.m. on Fri., June 7 in the fair secretarys office. Items for submission should be brought to the Grange Building between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 8. Entries will be released between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday, June 16. Entries removed without permission will forfeit premiums. COOKING AND BAKING Divisions within the Provisions department are Canned goods, Breads, Yeast breads, Cookies, Candy, Mud pies, and Cake. Canned goods are judged on eye appeal, good seal and content quality. They are not opened and are returned untouched. Entries may be from 2012 or 2013. A Red Star Yeast baking contest is being held in the yeast breads division. All participants receive free yeast packets. Top three placers are to be presented with measuring spoons, an oven mitt or a plastic pastry sheet. Best of Show (BOS) in canned goods wins a $5 premium and BOS in baked goods gets $10. Department organizers are also looking for the best looking cake. There will also be a special category of best decorated cake, which is not edible said Townley. Only the decoration will be judged, created on whatever form the artist chooses. We hope for some beautiful ideas and examples of wedding and birthday cakes. An additional $10 goes to the BOS for decorated cakes. Mud pies is a fun division for kids. All participants get a ribbon with $3 going to the BOS. FLOWER SHOW Four themes have been selected for this years flower show artistic arrangements participants to work with. Summer Flight should feature birds, bees, butterflies, kites, airplanes or anything that flies. Lemon Shakeup is to include flowers of yellow hues. Tea Time calls for an arrangement in a teacup. The saucer is optional. All About Me is the last. Participants are to weave things about their hobbies into the arrangement. These are all easy enough that anybody can do them. You dont have to be a professional to make any of these, said Townley. ANTIQUE SHOW Id like to see more antiques come out, said Townley. Its the only way the youth and young people can see how things have progressed over the years. Some unusual items displayed during the past have included hair receptacles (for collecting hair), flat irons and chamber pots. If you have a unique trinket grandma or grandpa had, bring it out. Well give it back, teased Townley. BOS in this department is $3. MISCELLANEOUS Best of Show cash prizes will also be awarded for the

following: needlework, $10; machine sewing, $10; hobbies and crafts, $5; scrapbooking, $10; photography, $10; and art, $10. Townley noted major improvements have been made to the display building this spring. A new roof and siding have really spruced up the buildings outer look. New paint on the inside brightens the interior. She said all entries and displays will be behind chicken wire framing with double padlocks. Competing for the honor are Dalton Thomas, Matthew Klopfenstein, Alexis Howell, Justin Carnahan, Luke Spangler and Abram Klopfenstein. Thomas is the son of Kenny and Stephanie Thomas of Oakwood where he is a member of the volunteer fire department. The 2013 graduate of Paulding High School is a member of Paulding FFA and the junior fair board. He shows steers and feeders at the county fair. Matthew Klopfenstein is a 12-year member of the Blue Ribbon Workers 4-H Club and a third year member of Wayne Trace FFA. He is also a National Honor Society member and is on the junior

fair board and student council. His livestock projects have included market lambs, dairy feeders, beef feeders and market steers. He is a son of Roy and Deborah Klopfenstein of rural Haviland. Howell is the daughter of Daniel and Debra Howell of Paulding. She is a member of the Flat Rock Junior Farmers and Junior Leaders 4-H clubs and has been a camp counselor. She is also active on the junior fair board, and Paulding FFA and FCCLA groups. She will be a junior at Paulding High School this fall. She shows rabbits, hogs and pygmy goats at the fair. Carnahan is a member of Brown Bettys and Buster Brown 4-H club, junior fair board, Paulding FFA and Boy Scout Troop 19. He will be a senior at Paulding High School this fall. The son of Douglas and Deanna Carnahan of Oakwood, he shows goats during the fair. Spangler, the son of Mark and Laura Spangler of rural Oakwood, is a 12-year member of the Leaders of Tomorrow 4-H Club. He has shown market lambs, market steers and beef breeding projects. He finished homeschooling this spring. Abram Klopfenstein will be a sophomore at Wayne Trace this fall and is a member of the Leaders of Tomorrow 4-H club. He shows feeder calves and sheep. His parents are Jerry and Cherry Klopfenstein of Paulding. Winner of this years trophy will be announced during the Showman of Showmen competition which begins at 4 p.m. Friday, June 14, in the show arena.

Open animal shows at this years fair are swine, beef, goats and rabbits. The hog show is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 13. Beef will be shown beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, June 14. Goat show will get underway at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 15. All are in the show arena. Rabbits will be shown in the rabbit barn beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. SWINE SHOW Entries for the swine show close at noon on Wednesday, June 12. All animals must be on the grounds, identified and weighed by 4 p.m. June 9. Barrows and gilts of any purebreds, crossbreeds and grades are eligible to participate. All breeds will show together. Classes will be divided by

weight following weigh-in. Weights must be delivered to the fair secretarys office by noon June 13 or the entry will be disqualified. Trophies will be awarded for grand champion and reserve champion overall market hogs, Over-and-Out showmanship (for those over 18 and not involved in the Junior Fair) and Pee Wee Showmanship for 8 year olds and under. Plaques will be presented for showmanship 9-13 year olds and showmanship 14 years and up. Entry fee is $5 per head with the exception of showmanship classes. All exhibitors must purchase a $10 exhibitor ticket. Junior fair exhibitors may show their hogs in the open show. Animals not shown in the junior fair program are not allowed to go through the livestock sale, but may be sent to the packer at market price. See fair book for more information. BEEF SHOW Feeder calves and steers from dairy or beef breeds of cattle are able to show in the beef show. Entries are due by 4 p.m. June 14 and all animals to be shown must be on the grounds by that time. Class divisions will be determined by weights and the number of entries. Shows will consist of feeders 750 pounds and under, both dairy and beef; and steers of either variety. There will be three divisions of showmanship per type, beef or dairy. The divisions are beginner, ages six to ten; junior, ages 11-13 and senior, ages 14 and up. Entry fees are $20 per head with showmanship fees $3 per person. Grooming is allowed. This is a pull-in show. Any out-of-state exhibitors must carry completed health papers for their animals. All pull-ins will be dismissed after the shows. No straw is allowed for bedding, and the stalls must be cleaned before leaving for premiums to be paid. Kenny Thomas is the superintendent for this department. Caleb Schlatter is his assistant. Consult the fair book for further information. RABBIT SHOW This youth and adult show has entry registration beginning at 4 p.m. up until the breed class starts. Entry fee is $3 per rabbit. Classes will be determined once entries have arrived at this American Rabbit Breeders Association sanctioned show. Cash prizes will be given for best of show overall and reserve overall. Camping during the Paulding County Fair is available to exhibitors and their families. Sites are set up in the south and west sections of the fairgrounds. At least one adult must be staying on a campsite who is responsible for the actions of all those on their site. Cost of camping is $80. It includes electrical hook-up with air conditioning to those who have it, and a parking permit. All fees must be paid by Friday, June 7 in the fair secretarys office. Some of the rules of the camp ground area include: Fire lane must be clear. Midnight curfew is enforced. Permits must be prominently displayed. No tents. After the first vehicle, all others must be parked across the street in the north parking lot. Refuse is to be put in garbage bags then into the provided garbage containers. Three-prong plugs with a ground are required. Campfires are allowed if in a chimera or an above ground firebox. Camp site request forms are to include the name of the exhibitors 4-H club, FFA chapter or other organization; name of the responsible adult(s); and a list of all people who will be staying on the site. Although a particular site may be requested, campers are not guaranteed that spot, or the same spot yearly. Attempts to accommodate the requests will be made however. Members must attend a Quality Assurance program that teaches members how to properly care for their livestock. Skill-a-thon is the final requirement. Members must attend skill-a-thon, where they demonstrate their knowledge learning the different parts, breeds and medication labels for each species of animal as well as a completed

record book for the animals they plan to exhibit at the 2013 Paulding County Fair. This was a huge event and was made possible with over 35 volunteers to help assist with running stations interviewing the youths. PAULDING Residents of Paulding County have been invited to participate in constructing a quilt that will be part of a traveling display to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War next June. A special division in the domestic displays needlework department has been set up to accommodate those who would like to participate. Members of the public are encouraged to submit 201/2x20-1/2 blocks of orange fabric featuring various stitch work and some very specific information. The orange color represents exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange. The block should include a Vietnam veterans full name, rank if desired, branch of service, date of year(s) served, unit of assignment, and base or camp where exposure to Agent Orange occurred. If the vet is deceased, their age and cause of death should also be noted. Other information that would be appropriate might be the vets service nickname, picture, unit patches, branch emblem, ribbons or medals awarded, state of residency and more. Wording or lettering may be done in fabric pen or paint;

Because generational effects of Agent Orange are possible, blocks may also be submitted to honor a child or grandchild of a veteran exposed to the herbicide. To keep credibility, these squares must directly note or reference their related veteran. Quilt blocks will be displayed during the Paulding County Fair then donated to the Agent Orange Victims and Widows Support Network which hosts the Quilt of Tears Project. The local project chairperson will see that the squares are put together into a quilt, which will be displayed next June over Fathers Day weekend at Defiance College for a commemoration ceremony. More information on submitting a square for an Agent Orange Quilt of Tears, contact Ellie Townley at 419506-1275. She also has copies of consent forms required for the project. For more information on the northwest Ohio area project, contact the Defiance County Veterans Service Commission at 419-7826861 or the project chair, Ruby Schindler, at 419-6582835. PURPLE HEARTS For the third year, fair officials will be taking quilts, afghans, cross stitch blankets or throws with a patriotic theme and featuring a Purple Heart in a class called Purple Hearts for Veterans. The items must be at least lap sized (40x60), but no larger than twin sized. It is requested they be red, white and blue with at least one Purple Heart incorporated in the design. Entries may be entered in junior and senior divisions. They will be judged and prizes awarded, but those whose handiwork will be displayed are asked to sign waivers allowing their pieces to be donated. The intent is to distribute these items to veterans in Paulding County, in V.A. hospitals and nursing facilities around Ohio or across the nation. According to Lonnie Miller, who is organizing the giveaway, Paulding County veterans will get first priority. Next, veterans in Fort Waynes V.A. hospital will be served. Questions may be directed to Miller at 419-5873594. The fair secretarys office is a hub of activity in the days leading up to and during the Paulding County Fair. Manning the office this year is the team of Carole Overmyer and Della Stephey. In the office, reservations are taken for camping sites, entries are registered with the required $10 exhibitor passes, memberships to the Paulding County Agricultural Society are sold, and fair books may be obtained, as well as fair board fundraisers. Popular Paulding County Idol contest enters seventh year

Paulding County Idol is entering its seventh year with the 2013 talent competition. This year will feature an expanded format. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 15 in the Brenda Thomas Memorial Senior Pavilion. In years past, winners were determined on the merit of one song. Again this year, finalists will be determined by the first song. All contestants must bring a second song tract, for the second performance will reveal the winners. Again, the top three winners will receive cash prizes. First place will earn $150; second, $100; and third, $50. Potential contestants may continue to register until 6 p.m. the day of the event in the fair secretarys office, or mail in a registration form to P.O. Box 222, Paulding, Ohio 45879. Fourteen director positions will be up for grabs during this years Paulding County Fair, when members of the Paulding County Agricultural Society select its leaders. The election is from noon-4 p.m. in the fair secretarys office on Saturday, June 15. Membership tickets must be displayed in order to vote. Memberships are $1 and are available to Paulding County residents 18 years of age or older. They may be purchased in the fair secretarys office on the fairgrounds. Six terms actually expire this year; the additional eight are unexpired terms that were filled for a one-year time frame or vacant. Expiring terms are in Antwerp Village, Mike Molitor; Grover Hill Village, Lonnie Miller; Haviland Village, Ellen Townley; and Paulding Village, Jeff Miller; and the townships of Benton, Jason Germann and Carryall, unfilled. The one-year unexpired terms are for Oakwood Village, Kenny Thomas; and for

This year, the Ohio Farm Bureau in Paulding County is conducting a Farmers Care, formerly Farmers Share, Breakfast. It will begin at 8 a.m. June 15 during the Paulding County Fair to express appreciation to the community. It will be served until food runs out, usually about 9:30 a.m. The meal is available for a free-will donation in the Brenda Thomas Memorial Senior Pavilion. According to Jen Wilson, local organizational director, the new concept was developed because it is getting harder to determine the farmers share, due to prices varying so much. Were taking time to give back to the community for their supportFarmers are providing a safe, abundant food supply to consumers. What theyre doing is about producing a good product, and providing an affordable breakfast to show they care, she concluded. Now in its 13th year, the event has been well attended each time it is offered. Menu items this year are sausage gravy with biscuits, pancakes, fruit cup, sweet rolls and muffins, coffee, juice and milk. The farmers, whose efforts supplied the basic ingredients for all these breakfast items, have been making about 50 cents for their share of the whole meal for the past five years. Store prices above that come from others in the food provision chain. Wilson said 81 cents of one food dollar goes somewhere else with 19 cents to farmers.

Special days set for seniors, vets, alumni

Members of the Cloverbud 4-H group met with the Master Gardeners of Paulding where they had a program about tree planting. The members also planted flowers at the entrance of the fairgrounds.

The Cloverbuds 4-H Club met May 4 at the extension building at the Paulding County Fairgrounds for a Master Gardeners Volunteer program. The program included information about the inner structure of trees, planting new trees and the importance of trees.

Following the program was a question and answer period on trees. Corn hole games were played and then the members went outside to plant flowers in the raised flower bed at the entrance to the fairground under the fair sign. Refreshments were served

and then club members were given a Red Maple seedling with instructions to plant at home. The Master Gardeners presenting the program were: Brenda DeLong, Nila Clementson and Pauline Boroff.

Each day of this years Paulding County Fair, June 10-15, has been assigned a special significance with special coordinating events. Monday has been named Cancer Awareness Day. Members of the Flat Rock Junior Farmers 4-H club are hoping to turn the fairgrounds pink for Cancer Awareness Day. They will be selling pink tshirts in support of the Paulding County Relay For Life. Tuesday is Senior Citizen Day. Free admission is offered to everyone 60 years young and up on Senior Citizens Day, Tuesday, June 11. Brenda Thomas Memorial Senior Pavilion will house the days events. Beginning at 8 a.m., seniors will be a breakfast of sausage gravy and biscuits, courtesy of The Gardens of Paulding. Games will be played from 10-11 a.m., including bingo and a play money auction. The complimentary boxed lunch, served at 11:30 a.m., will be prepared by the senior center. Those who plan to attend need to contact the Paulding Senior Center at 419399-3650 or the fair board secretarys office by 4 p.m. Friday, June 7 to reserve a

meal. From noon-2 p.m., Kenzie Clemens will entertain. Transportation from the parking area will be available. Senior Day is sponsored by the fair board and several area businesses. Wednesday is 4-H Alumni Reunion Day. A reunion tent will be set up behind the Grange Hall 4-H Alumni Reunion Day activities. There will be a giant cake to share. People are encouraged to wear 4-H shirts and to look over memorabilia and pictures to peruse and reminisce over. Thursday is Veterans Day. Snacks and drinks will be available to veterans and their spouses throughout the day, beginning around 2 p.m. These are provided by the fair board, Paulding County Veterans Service Office and Wetzel Motorcycle Club. A ham and bean supper will be served by the Paulding VFW Post 587 in the Senior Pavilion. Serving starts at 4 p.m. Friday is FFA Alumni and Flag Day. FFA alumni from the county have lots of fun activities in which to participate. At 11:30 a.m. in the show arena there will be a livestock

judging contest. Following, at 1:30 p.m. in the reunion tent there will be a meet and greet of former and current FFA members. Those wishing to join the alumni organizations, as well as members of the groups, can sign up for a drawing. Prize is a wooden table constructed by FFA members. During the same time there will be free watermelon to enjoy and feed sack races to participate in. FFA advisors say alumni and current FFA members are welcome to participate in all but the giveaway, which is strictly for members of the alumni groups. An array of flags will be displayed around the fairgrounds for Flag Day. Saturday is Safety and Scouts Day. Safety Day activities begin at noon. They will take place in the vicinity of the pavilion, reunion tent and the bottom grounds. They will include a Life Flight landing, Ohio State Highway Patrol simulator, and displays for farm, water, electrical and home safety. Scouts Day will consist of demonstration by local scouts and sign-up information in the tent.

Junk Yard Band, a five-man group from Fort Wayne, will play music from the 50s, 60s and 70s during their concert beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 14 in the pavilion.

John Curran and Renegade will take the stage from 8-10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12. They will perform in the pavilion.

John Paulding Days reaches out to all interests

By JIM LANGHAM Feature Writer PAULDING At first, the thought of being grand marshal for John Paulding Days was humbling but not thought-provoking to State Rep. Tony Burkley. However, as the days have gone by since he and his wife, Nancy, were first chosen to be this years co-grand marshals, Burkley has become more humbled at the thought. I guess when I started to think about past grand marshals like Herb Monroe, the thought of being selected started to really get to me, said Burkley. I told Erika (Willitzer, executive director, Paulding Chamber of Commerce) that you would think that with the kind of business Im in, I would be more confident about this type of thing. This is a real honor for me. When I think of grand marshal, I view some of the people who have held that position before. I dont feel like I am someone special like some of them, continued Burkley. This is quite an honor; you never think of yourself as deserving something like this. This years event kicks off on Thursday evening, June 6, with rides and concessions by D&D Putting & Amusements opening at 5 p.m. and the grand parade at 7 p.m. Following the parade, from 8-10 p.m., there will be a free Family Music Fest sponsored by the Salvation Army of Paulding County and the Compass Youth Center of Defiance for all three days. Other festival sponsors are City Beverage, First Federal Bank, Paulding County Hospital, A Plus Propane and Time Warner Cable Business Class. Once again on Friday, things will get under way at 5 p.m. with the opening of rides and concessions. The free Family Music Fest will also continue from 5-10 p.m. Also on Friday, at 6 p.m., children from the community will be invited to participate in

MISS PAULDING COUNTY TO BE CROWNED Eight high school girls from Wayne Trace and Paulding high schools will vie for the title of Miss Paulding County Pageant during a pageant held during John Paulding Days. The third annual event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7 in the Paulding High School Auditeria. Competing in this years pageant are, front Felita Guyton, a sophomore at Paulding; second row Olivia Hoisington, a senior at Paulding, and Kylie Bishop, a junior at Paulding/Vantage; third row Mackenzie Haney, a junior at Wayne Trace, Hayle Simonin, a freshman at Paulding, and Alex Chandler, a sophomore at Paulding; back row Lauren Speice, a junior at Wayne Trace/Vantage, and Mayah Nance, a freshman at Paulding. Over $500 in scholarships will be awarded to the winners, with a 50/50 raffle for the audience. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door, from contestants, or by calling 419-302-3845.

Kids are invited to line up around the lawn of the courthouse and when we say go, they can walk around the lawn and pick up sweat treats, said Willitzer. Willitzer noted that anyone wishing to donate bags of candy can do so by dropping them off at the Paulding County Senior Center. One of the big moments of the festival is the crowning of Miss Paulding County at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Paulding High School Auditeria. Eight girls from Paulding High School and Wayne Trace High School will be competing for the crown this year. Contestants include Felita Guyton, Paulding; Olivia Hoisington, Paulding; Kylie Bishop, Paulding/Vantage; Mackenzie Haney, Wayne Trace; Hayle Simonin, Paulding; Alex Chandler, Paulding; Lauren Speice, Wayne Trace/Vantage; and Mayah Nance, Paulding. Over $500 in scholarships will be awarded to the winners, with a 50/50 raffle for the audience. Saturday morning, the fun of the festival will be incorporated with the Paulding County Hospital Health Fair, from 7:30-11 a.m. at the hospital. Those tests available to be performed include comprehensive health panel, thyroid screen, hemoglobin AIC and PSA. Those who participate in the testing are invited to take advantage of a Relay For Life fundraiser breakfast that will be held at the hospital dining room after the blood draw. The cost is $3. On the square, John Paulding Days wraps up with rides and concessions open from noon-10 p.m. Special pricing will be in effect for Kids Day. The free Family Music Fest will provide live entertainment from 5-10 p.m. When villages have this kind of activity, it gets communities involved in things where they come in contact with people they wouldnt have otherwise, said Burkley. Its sort of a front porch mentality where you get to know your neighbors and other people in town. It also draws in a lot of people that come to visit during that time. It might not be a large endeavor like much larger communities have, but it is a homecoming of sorts, Burkley said. Its another opportunity to highlight the community and its businesses.
