I. DESKRIPSI MATA KULIAH This course provides students with basic skills in comprehending simple oral discourses through recorded voice of native speakers. It is focused upon a variety of English sounds (vowels, consonants, and diphthongs), stress patterns, and intonations. Materials are presented in a variety of short functional texts with exercises covering sound recognition and discrimination as well as stresses and intonation and their meanings. Students learning activities include individual work, pair work and group work, and listening to authentic oral English texts available in the mass media. Evaluation on students achievement is based on classroom participation, home assignments, the mid-semester test, and the final test. This course is given at the first semester as the students have limited or no basic skills of listening comprehension which are needed for the next levels of listening comprehension. II. STANDARISASI KOMPETENSI MATA KULIAH At the end of the course students are expected to possess: 1. an ability to understand, identify and produce sounds, stress, and intonations in English 2. an ability to comprehend the gist, details, topics, attitudes of the listening passages 3. positive attitudes toward the learning of English listening and all activities done to support the listening comprehension
