World Red Cross Day Celebrations.


The World Red Cross Day is the annual celebration held on the 08 th of May to represent the 7 principles of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement. It was on this memorable day that the founder of the Red Cross, Sir Jean Henry Dunant was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Every year the volunteers of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) get together on this memorable day and organize celebrations in the memory of Sir Henry Dunant and this year the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is celebrating a 150 years. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, Colombo Branch organized a walk in the Maharagama Division to commemorate the World Red Cross Day where our volunteers walked from the Wivekarama Junction to the Nawinna Raja Maha Viharaya and a Bodi Pujawa was organized by the Mahragama Division and the Kandawalawaththe Unit in the respective temples in the area. The Heraliyawala unit in the Homagama Division organized an Art Competition where 58 Children at the age of 6-11 participated in the competition and the subject of the pictures that were drawn were regarding volunteer services. Meanwhile a street drama was organized by the Junior Red Cross (JRC) Circle of the D.S. Senanyake College where 50 JRC members were involved in organizing this drama. The Drama was about the educating the students on Red Cross and Health, this was later followed up by a lecture on education for A/L students. Blood Donation Programmes


Blood Donation Programmes were conducted on the 04th and the 19th of May 2013 in the Ambalangoda and the Siyambalagoda Red Cross Units. 60 pints of blood were collected from the Ambalangoda unit and 62 pints of blood were collected from the Siyambalagoda Unit. The main objective of this programme is to encourage the existing donors to regularly donate blood, encourage new people to donate blood on a voluntary basis and promoting the protection of individual health. Mugs were also distributed by the SLRCS Colombo Branch to all donors and a total of 122 mugs were distributed.

Shramadana Campaigns
Shramadana campaigns were organized by the Red Cross units as mentioned below. The main objective of this campaign was to make sure that the community of the Heraliyawala area have dirt free area and also increasing the awareness of re cycling & re using solid material to create a greener future for the future generation. During dissemination programmes the history of the Red Cross, its seven fundamental principles, our humanitarian services along with the Geneva conventions are mentioned and described in detail to the community to give a better understanding about the Red Cross movement. 01 dissemination programme was done for a total number of 16 students in Colombo district schools during the formation of the Junior Red Cross Circles (JRC). Dissemination exams were also done to make sure that the students have a proper knowledge on the Red Cross. 03 Numbers of Dissemination Programmes were done in the Private sector where a total number of 45 participants were present for the dissemination.

Branch Annual General Meeting


The Branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on the 26 th of May 2013 at the Royal Restaurant in the Branch Premises. The AGM was observed by one of our Hony. Central Governing Board (CGB) Members Mr. Anton Victoria. Our Branch Executive Officer Mrs. Kumari Kothalawala conducted a presentation on the monthly unit selection criteria, the 2 year branch budget and progress report which educated the 84 numbers of delegates present from Homagama, Kaduwela, Maharagama and Moratuwa Red Cross divisions. The Branch also selected the best Red Cross Units for the Month of March and April 2013 where the Heraliyawala Unit was selected as the best Red Cross Unit for the Month of March 2013 and Lahirugama was selected as the best Red Cross unit for the Month of April 2013, an award and a gift of Rupees 5000/= was individually given to both these units. Health Awareness Programmes


A Health Awareness Programme on Nutirition was conducted by Dr. Gnanaka L. Pandiperuma on the 29 th of May 2013 for the community of the Heraliyawala area. The main objective of this programme was to give awareness to the community on types of food which contain good nutrition. Meanwhile a Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) Awareness Programme was conducted on the 18th of May 2013 at the Megoda Kolonnawa Temple for the community of the Megoda Kolonnawa area. The main objective of this programme was to educate the community on the prevention of such diseases.

Sponsorship Programmes conducted by E3X Global (PVT) Ltd.


E3X Global one of Sri Lankas leading Software Company, donated 10 numbers of DVD players and Self learning English language kits to be distributed in Schools in the Colombo District. The equipment was handed over to the Hony. Chairman of the Colombo Branch Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe by the Chairman of E3X Global (PVT) Ltd. Mr. Amila Kankanamage.

Collaborative Programmes
A collaborative programme for the No Tobacco Day was conducted with the Alcohol and Drugs Information Centre (ADIC) and the SLRCS Colombo Branch on the 31st of May 2013 in the Heraliyawala area. Leaflets and stickers were distributed regarding the prevention using tobacco in the community, the main objective of this programme was to educate the community on the effects of Tobacco to the Human Body and the diseases it causes.
