Create inferences from pictures.

I Do Input (1-2 Key teaching points): Check for Understanding:

Students will be inferring job roles and meals from pictures. Students will be sitting at the carpet at level zero and they will participate in any attention getters. One student will be called to answer the question of what does it make to infer. Students will be watching as I make inferences on the pictures.

Ok boys and girls by the end of the lesson you will be able to create inference by looking at pictures. First before we move on I want to review what inferring is. Can someone tell me what it means to infer?.... Yes, inferring is when you use your background knowledge, schema, and the evidence from the text to create a new idea. By the end of the lesson you will be able to create inferences from pictures. First you are going to watch me as I make inferences about what job this person does by looking at some things that they may wear to work. I will look at some pictures on the iPad and I will show the students. The pictures will be a firefighter hat, fire pants, and a firefighter coat. So, I am looking at these pictures and I am going to take some think time. Now I know to infer, I am going to use my background knowledge and I know that when I would see people on television and in books that I read that they save people or put out fires and by using the evidence from the pictures if someone were to put these put these clothes on that they are probably a police officer. Now if you agree give me a thumbs up, if you dont agree give me a thumbs down. I will then select a student to tell me their respond. Why do you not agree?... Yes, because police officers do not wear these type of clothes, firefighters do. How do you

know? Yes, because police officer protects people they do not fight fires. Excellent job! Now we are going to do one together.

Students will be sitting at the carpet at level zero and they will participate Ok, I have another set of pictures that I am in any attention getters. I going to show you and when you are done you are going to select A.) a waiter Students that are cold called when B) a chef C) a hostess. If you think a youre answer questions that will be asked. going to give me a one at your chest, if you Students will hold a discussion based think b youre going to give me a two at your chest, and if you think c youre going on the check for understanding ask, ask, ask and gestures. to give me a three at your chest. I will then cold call students to do a check for understanding on what they are supposed to do doing. Ok, now I am going to show you the pictures and I am going to give you a few seconds to think about your answer when you hear the timer go off you are to put your inference at your chest. Afterwards I will show the students pictures of an apron, a serving tray, and restaurant tables. Show me your answers boys and girlsI will then select students that may have gotten the answer wrong and they are to explain their reasoning. This will be done by me asking questions like: How did you make that inference? How did you use your background knowledge? If you agree give me a silent applause if you dont agree give me a uh-uh. I will then cold call a student to tell me why they disagree by doing ask, ask, ask. Great job, we inferred that it will be a waiter because we used our background knowledge and evidence to infer that these pictures are these things that a chef needs. You Do Independent Practice: Students will be sitting at the carpet Check for Understanding: at level zero and listening to directions of their independent work. Ok, now its your turn to infer pictures. You will be going to your desk and you will Students will be directed to go to their

being making inferences just like we did up here together, but when you are on your own you will be making inferences about what will be made for dinner. For instance, the first box has a picture of noodles, pasta sauce, and meat balls. This could be A) pork chops B) Tacos or C) spaghetti. I do not want you to answer now but I want you to use your inferring tools which are background knowledge and evidence to make your inferences. Students will be directed to leave the carpet and go back to their desk and work at a level zero.

desk and do their activity while the teacher walks around and assist.

The exit ticket will consist of three pictures and the student will have to infer where the person is going.
