Unpacked Benchmark, CDAS, CRS, or IL State Standards. 12.4.27 Identify simple machines (lever, inclined plane, pulley, screw, and wheel and axle) and understand how they function. Understand know how they apply forces with advantage, and identify which machine is suited for accomplishing a simple task.

Key Lesson Elements What is the Teacher Doing? What are the Students Doing?
Do Now (3-5 minutes):

State Lesson Objective & Lesson Agenda SWBAT Identify 5 simple machines and understand that they make work easier. Intro: Work, tools, simple machines make work easier Mini-lesson: Types of simple machines Simple Machine Sort Response Cards CFU Exit Ticket I Do Input (1-2 Key teaching points): Check for Understanding: Transition the students to the rug. Intro: Tell the students that every time they pick up a book, climb the stairs, or open a door, they are doing work. Sometimes when we do work, we use a tool to help make the work easier. TPS: What tool would you use to make a math problem easier? (calculator, multiplication chart, ruler, etc.) In science, we are going to learn about Simple Machines. Simple Machines are tools that help make work easier by changing the size or direction of the force needed to do the work. Simple Machines have few or no moving parts. Minilesson: Tell the students that are 5 types of Simple Machines we will learn about. Name each with examples. Lever: A bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum. A lever changes the direction of the force. Examples: seesaw, bottle opener Wheel & Axel: A wheel attached to a smaller round bar. The wheel spreads the force out over a larger distance. Examples: Cars, scooters, doorknob Inclined Plane: A slanted surface that connects a lower level with a higher level. Spreads the force out over a longer distance. Examples: ramp Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a pole. Force is spread out over the distance of the inclined plane. Examples: screw, jar lid Pulley: A wheel with a rope or chain wrapped around it. Changes the direction of the force. Example: a wishing well, flagpole Sit in position A on the rug and track the teacher.

Think for 30 seconds about the question. Share at level with a partner for 1 minute. Share answer at level 2 if called on.

Track the teacher while she introduces the 5 types of simple machines.

Objective(s) SWBAT: Identify 5 simple machines and understand that they make work easier.

We Do Guided Practice: Check for Understanding: Transition students to their seats. Explain that they will be given a picture sort in which they must sort each simple machine into its type. For example: a flagpole would be sorted in the pulley type. Give students 3 minutes to sort their pictures. Cold call 5 students to share one type of simple machine and briefly explain how they knew what type it was. Give students 15 seconds to get sort materials back into their baggies. Work in their groups to sort the pictures into their simple machine types. Share one type of simple machine and what makes it that type if cold called.

Return materials to the sort baggies.

You Do Independent Practice: Check for Understanding: Have students get out their responder cards A, B, C. Show students a picture of a simple machine on a power point slide and provide three choices for the type of simple machine. Give students 30 seconds to choose the correct answer, holding the responder card ready in their chests. Count down from 3. On 3, all students will raise their choice in the air. Scan choices to CFU. Repeat for a total of 5 examples. After each CFU, cold call student to tell how they knew the type of simple machine. Exit Ticket (aligned to lesson objective) or assessment: Five multiple choice questions that show a picture of a simple machine. Students must choose the correct type of simple machine.

. Take out responder cards at level 0.

Make choice and hold responder card in chest.

Show response on 0.

Closing/Preview for next lesson: Tell students that for the next 2 weeks they will learn about each type of simple machine in greater detail and have opportunities to work with each type of simple machine to understand how they make work easier.
