SHANNON CAULFIELD/The Medford Sun
Medford resident and Rider University student Emily Mazzio speaks with Becca Gutwirth, director of education and outreach AT the Wood-
ford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge, while holding a resident owl. Recently, Mazzio created a mini-documentary about the refuge. According to
Gutwirth, the response to the video has been nothing but positive. People just dont know were here, even as close as Medford, Gutwirth
said. Some people get on the Facebook page hoping to see a photo of an animal here or there, but with the video get an in-depth look at what
we do here.
Resident creates refuge mini-documentary
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Medford resident and Rider
University student Emily Mazzio
didnt expect to make a large im-
pact after creating a mini-docu-
mentary on the Woodford Cedar
Run Wildlife Refuge.
The final project, which she ex-
pected only her class and profes-
sor to see, has become popular on
the animal refuges Facebook
page.
Additionally, the video is used
during classes and events outside
the refuge, and is listed on the
refuges website, according to
Becca Gutwirth, director of edu-
cation and outreach.
Mazzio was around 8 years old
when she visited the wildlife cen-
ter for a frog program, which al-
ways stuck with her and eventu-
ally inspired her five-minute doc-
umentary.
People love animals and you
can get right up close and person-
al with them, Mazzio said.
Mazzio filmed during volun-
teer day, when the refuge is
packed with kids donating their
time to help the non-profit organ-
ization.
I thought it was amazing. You
see so many kids sitting indoors
and playing video games, and
here they were cleaning up the
area and seeing the wildlife,
Mazzio said.

T
he unofficial start of summer
has come and gone. With Me-
morial Day weekend in the
rearview mirror, the focus now is on
brighter days ahead the beach, the
sun, vacations and relaxation. Presi-
dent Obama and Gov. Christie got in
the spirit last week when they toured
the Jersey Shore to assess the recovery
from Hurricane Sandy.
Even the weather is playing along,
with temperatures in the 90s last week,
and heat advisories being issued
throughout the region.
New Jersey coastal towns are hoping
and praying that the storm or other
outside forces does not affect the
summer season. And all New Jersey
residents should hope for the same, as
the summer Shore business is a huge
part of the states economy a $19 bil-
lion industry, or half of the states total
tourism revenue, according to esti-
mates.
The state is planning to spend $25
million in federal recovery money on
an advertising campaign to attract vis-
itors to the Shore. A campaign,
Stronger Than the Storm, with the
Twitter hashtag #STTS, promotes the
states coast in part by providing guide-
lines and tools for people looking to
plan a New Jersey beach vacation.
A recent AAA survey says that the
Shore will be just fine, as almost 80 per-
cent of people from New Jersey and
the Philadelphia region say that Hurri-
cane Sandy has not affected their sum-
mer travel plans to the Shore.
The proof will be in the pudding,
though, once turnout can be assessed.
So, as we said in this space a few
weeks ago, make sure you travel local
this summer and visit the states won-
derful beaches. Theyre cheap, theyre
close, and theyre a lot of fun.
And while youre doing it, dont for-
get about us, either. Send us your vaca-
tion photos, and well let all your
neighbors know just how much fun
youre having.
In the meantime, enjoy the sun!
Sun-splashed summer success?
Heres to hoping all goes well at the Jersey Shore
Dont forget about us!
While youre vacationing this summer,
dont forget about The Sun. Send us
your family or friend vacation photos,
and well show everyone in town.
IRS cant keep your tax
records confidential
Besides the Benghazi and AP wire tap-
ping of journalists, there is the IRS scandal.
President Obama claims to learn about
these scandals in his government by reading
the papers.
President Obama and his campaign sup-
porters called for the IRS investigation of op-
ponents, the very actions taken by the IRS
against this very public enemies list.
The IRS scandal undermines the very le-
gitimacy of government, especially the ille-
gal use of the IRS to threaten and chill politi-
cal activity of opponents that potentially af-
fected the outcomes of elections despite
being asked by Congress.
While mostly centered on organizations
with Patriot, or Tea Party in its names or ed-
ucation groups advocating constitutional
limited government, the IRS harassment
also included religious groups viewed as op-
ponents, such as Catholics, the iconic Billy
Graham and Jewish groups.
It was not just denying or delaying non-
profit tax status to political opponents, the
criminality involved leaking of confidential
tax information to a third party group, Prop-
ublica a liberal journalism project, that con-
firmed using such materials to write dis-
paraging articles.
If the IRS cannot keep your tax records
confidential, how do you expect them to keep
your medical information when they begin
enforcing Obamacare?
The IRS unit leading that effort is led by
the same person who oversaw the IRS tax ex-
empt division!
By the way, how could anybody think it
was OK for the IRS, or anyone in govern-
ment, to demand under pain of perjury,
records about what you read or lists of who
you may have associated with or taught, past
or future, and even what is in your prayers?
Worse, there was no one at any level of
government bureaucracy who thought this
was wrong.
Isn't this governmental culture more dis-
quieting than any individual act of malfea-
sance?
Unless you actively oppose these injus-
tices then you are supporting them. Demand
complete answers now, while you still can.

Entitlement culture brings
countries to brink of ruin
I am going to lift the curtain on a very
controversial subject!
You often hear people say something
like, "free health care should be a birth
right.
Or, how about, "free college should be a
right for all." And the list goes on.
At what point is "it" something that has
to be earned? I can't think of two people to-
tally agreeing on where the line should be

One thing is for sure, at some
point, any entitlement program
becomes counterproductive.
An entitlement culture is what
has brought many countries in
Europe on the brink of financial
ruin.
These countries have now
started dialing back on entitle-
ments, which suggests that they
have crossed the line for what
should be free and what should
not be free.
Maybe we could learn a thing,
or two, from these countries.
Let me give you some exam-
ples of entitlements that citizens
of most European countries
enjoy:
If you fall sick, say for 10 days,
during your seven-week employ-
er paid vacation, you can tag the
10 days you were sick, to the
seven weeks vacation.
If you can get a doctor's note
(which is not hard to get) that you
were not "feeling well" through-
out your entire vacation, you can
in principle take a double vaca-
tion.
If you are unemployed and col-
lecting unemployment benefits,
you are entitled to take a seven-
week vacation away from looking
for a job and spend the time any-
way you like.
For example, going on a
Mediterranean cruise, while col-
lecting full unemployment bene-
fits.
So, how do you measure the
success (or failure) of an entitle-
ment program?
Here is a thought!
Will free college education ac-
tually be providing more people
with a college degree?
The answer is no. In countries
where college education is free,
fewer people end up with a col-
lege degree than in, for example,
the U.S., where college, in princi-
ple, is not free.
Here is another one for you!
Europeans, as do Canadians,
have free health care.
Does that mean that the Euro-
peans and the Canadians are
healthier than we are? No, they
are not!
You can go down the list of any
major disease and find that the
survival rates in the U.S. are
higher than in the countries we

I dont think people get to see
that every day.
According to Gutwirth, the re-
sponse to the video has been noth-
ing but positive.
People just dont know were
here, even as close as Medford,
Gutwirth said. Some people get
on the Facebook page hoping to
see a photo of an animal here or
there, but with the video get an
in-depth look at what we do here.
Gutwirth emphasized the facil-
ity is much more than an animal
hospital, providing tours and
classes to children on field trips,
in addition to hosting events.
Guests have the ability to visit for
a minimal fee, which is used by
the refuge to take care of the ani-
mals and upkeep of the facility.
The video did us justice,
Gutwirth said.
Mazzio is considering making
a second installment to the video.
I had a blast filming it, Mazz-
io said. I was like a little kid, just
as excited as everyone else.
Mazzio hosts a radio show
about sustainability at Rider Uni-
versity and would consider hav-
ing members from the refuge on
the show as guests.
Whats more sustainable than
saving wildlife and setting them
free? Mazzio asked.
I think its hard to get people
to notice it, from both ends of the
spectrum, Gutwirth said.
Kids living here in Medford
come and see it and kids from
Camden come see it, who might
have never been this up-close to
animals and nature like this.
Gutwirth notes the refuge is a
year-round destination. Theres
something new to discover with
each season, from the types of
trees that live through the winter
and the nests discovered, to the
uplands and wetlands to the
spring and summer, which is gen-
erally baby season for the refuge,
she said.
I think its a neat thing to see
the natural places around. Things
change so much from season to
season, you can compare and con-
trast, Gutwirth said.
The refuge provides education-
al sessions to local schools.
Students from Medford Town-
ship School District havent been
able to get the same experiences
they were afforded in previous
years, though, according to
Gutwirth, because Medfords
budget cuts reduced the number
of field trips students could go on
each year.
Theyre not able to come out
as much as they usually can,
Gutwirth said.
We were able to get a grant
that takes us into the classroom.
Mazzio emphasizes the impor-
tance of discovering the sur-
rounding wildlife and animals in
the area, and hopes more people
can make a trip to visit, especially
as the months get warmer and
school is out.
You live in the area but you
dont know, besides your neigh-
borhood, whats in the area, what
kind of plants bloom. I came here
when I was 8 and it stuck with me
so much, Mazzio said. Its really
important. One little trip out here
can stick with you for a lifetime.

Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge and to

Pineland Striders to continue its
annual tradition, Summer Classic
The Pineland Striders Running
Club, in conjunction with the Pre-
cious Gems Memorial, will con-
tinue a local road racing tradition
with its Summer Classic, the
36th annual Independence Road
Races.
The races, which will include a
5K and 10K, will start at 8:30 a.m.
June 29 at Shawnee High School
in Medford.
There will also have a free Kids
Fun Run starting at 8 a.m.
The Pineland Striders started
the summer race in 1978, an event
that has become of one of the old-
est and largest summer road
races in South Jersey.
In 2012, a total of 325 runners
participated in all the races. The
entire community pitches in to
make these races are successful
with generous cash contribu-
tions, food and beverage dona-
tions, and raffle gift sponsorships.
Cash sponsors to date include
Harrietts Energy Solutions,
Pathfinders, Quantum Coatings,
Delaware Valley Urology, the
Joseph P Kennedy Foundation
and the Beckett Wealth Manage-
ment Group.
Over the years, the Pineland
Striders developed a close bond
with the Precious Gems, a memo-
rial group created by the families
of four local young women who
were killed by a drunk driver in
1999. The races benefit the Pre-
cious Gems and its programs to

ing local high school students
about the dangers of drunk driv-
ing.

Clothes dryers are responsible for an estimated 15,000
home fires in the U.S. annually, causing over $84 million in
property damage. The leading cause of the fires was lint
build-up in the exhaust system.
COITs Dryer Vent Cleaning will help reduce the lint build-
up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours
homes air duct system, resulting in clean
fresh air and improved efficiency.

Last, but not least! All kinds of
research has demonstrated that
the longer people are entitled to
unemployment compensation,
the longer they stay unemployed.
In cases when the benefit peri-
od has been shortened, people re-
turn the to labor market sooner.
In conclusion what does entitle-
ments contribute to society?
Actually, in many cases, the op-
posite of what was intended.
Could it be that when some-

I think in that lies the answer.
Should we take care of the

By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Get up. Go to class. Study and
eat. Go to bed.
Living a mundane and repeti-
tive college schedule is what in-
spired Rutgers University gradu-
ate Mike Hourani, Stockton Col-
lege student Stephan Haller, Rut-
gers student Mike Gregory, Mes-
siah University student Jeff
Dwier and Wilmington College
student Brian Corley to change
their lives. The Shawnee alumni
started their own grassroots or-
ganization called Rewritten
Story. The group came up with
the name because it was a chance
for them to rewrite their own sto-
ries.
No one was taking time to
enjoy life or college, Hourani
said. We were tired of it. A lot of
people felt trapped. There has to
be something more.
The group navely posted an
ad on Craigslist telling readers
they could help people in any
ways they could. Most of the
emails coming through begged
the group for money, an aspect
the group didnt have nor was
willing to give away to help some-
one responding.
We hoped someone would
contact us. Surely enough, the
emails flooded in. One stood out
because she wasn't asking for
money, Hourani said.
The email stood out because
the woman, an amputee, was ask-
ing for a job. According to
Hourani, the woman lost her job
due to her disability and needed
to support her children, one of
whom was attending college.
She had the drive to do some-
thing with her life. She didnt
want a normal job she wanted
to help others in a similar situa-
tion, Dwier said. It made such a
difference for us.
Once the group dug more
deeply, they spoke to the womans
prosthetics doctor.
It turned out the doctor want-
ed to have her hold self-help
groups for amputees in his of-
fice, Hourani said. He would
pay her to do this.
The most amazing part to the
group was how little they actual-
ly did directly and how much was
accomplished for the woman.
We didnt actually do any-
thing. We just told her we would
be here for her and encouraged
her to do it, Hourani said.
Everything turned out well.
It was a great first attempt at
what we were trying to do. It gave
us a solid foundation on what we
were trying to accomplish, Gre-
gory said. In other cases, they do-
nated clothes to a man who took
it upon himself to raise children.
According to Hourani, a woman
was not able to care for them and
the older man decided he would
look after the children. The only
clothing the mother had for the
children was winter clothes for
the entire year.
He was basically asking for
some clothes and a crib, Corley
said.
It wasnt much but we were
able to help him out. He was a
very nice person, Dwier said.
It didnt cost very much either.
The group spent two summers
collecting scrap metal to help
fund the cause, the only money
with which they currently oper-
ate.
Its still new, Hourani said.
We havent used much of our
own money, its only that fund.
They also have sold personal
belongings to add to the fund.
The group has documented
some of what they have done on
YouTube in an attempt to reach
an audience to show what theyre
doing, in hopes of finding more
people to help.
It helps us look forward. None
of us feels trapped anymore,
Gregory said. The members of
the group are graduating college
one-by-one and each will be get-
ting nine-to-five jobs, which will
likely take time away from the
project.
But all agreed it wouldnt let it
stop them from trying to help oth-
ers.
We want to go out and inspire
others, Hourani said.
Every small opportunity
gives us great determination,
Gregory said.
