Small is beautiful
“Small is beautiful,” the legendary phrase by the economist Leopold Kohr, which later went on to become the
subject of a book by his student E.F. Schumacher, has for long embodied the fascination of the IT world for
squeezing all that complicated technology into a tiny little space. Whether it is cell phones, video cameras,
computers, or computer chips, when it comes to IT, beauty lies only in smallness.

But how small can ‘small’ really be? Well, quite a bit actually! A strand of the human hair is just about 0.05 to 0.1
mm, or as they say 50,000 to 100,000 nanometers (one nanometer is a billionth of a meter). Now imagine
working with technology on a scale less even than 100 nanometers. Put simply, it is size less than 0.0001 mm.
That’s what is called nanotechnology – working with and developing materials and devices less than that size.

But what could one possibly develop at such a small scale? And how on earth does one even work at scales that
defy human imagination? Thankfully enough, for most of us our livelihoods is not dependant on getting the
answers right to such scary questions. After all, shouldn’t these things remain confined in the dark dungeons of
scientific laboratories and high-tech research centres? What possible use could nanotechnology have for an
average Indian like us?

The answer might come as quite a surprise. According to some estimates, there are already more than 800
manufacture-identified nanoproducts that are publicly available, with new ones hitting the market every 3-4
weeks. While most of these cater to industrial and technical use, a few do find a way closer to our home.

There are so-called ‘nanopants’, stain-resistant jeans made of fabrics that contain nano-sized whiskers to repel oil
and dirt. Then there are nanocycles that are made from carbon nanotubes. These are stronger and lighter than
regular steel cycles we use. In all those lotions and creams that we use as beauty products, nanotechnology is
put to use for giving you that elegant and everlasting look. And what’s more, nanotechnology even found its way
in our chocolates. Chicago-based O’Lala Foods incorporated nanoscale crystals in its chocolate gum that
modified the surface morphology to give the gum a creamier texture and chocolate flavour, and prevented it
from falling apart.

And one need not necessarily restrict oneself to taking a literal interpretation of the word ‘nano’ when it comes to
technology and everyday use consumer products. Talk about the cult status that iPod nano enjoys amongst
music lovers the world over. The maverick CEO of Apple computer, Steve Jobs, had his marketing plans clearly
cut out when he decided to make a statement about the compactness of his latest offering by riding high on the
wave of world’s fascination with nanotechnology. The same holds true for Tata Motors, which recently launched
the much-awaited Nano car this month.

Whether in the form of actual usage as nanotechnology, or in the guise of branding gimmickry, technology in the
avatar of ‘nano’ is fast becoming a part of our consumption habits. With advancing technology, and of course
with more ingenious marketing, this role is only bound to increase in the coming years.

In this issue of Live IT, we explore some of the ways in which the nanoworld is trying to develop and take shape
around us and how best we can embrace it to our benefit.

made up of genes, and it’s these genes that carry the

information which gives organisms their specific
characteristics, including physical appearance (such as colour
of eyes or leaves) and physiological functioning (such as
drug-resistance in bacteria), etc.
Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM)
means changing the DNA by transferring genes between and
within different living things. For example, you could take a gene
from a fish that lives in very cold seas and insert it into
strawberry DNA, so it can survive the frost.

Why is GM food produced in India?

One of the major reasons for promoting GM food is - food
scarcity and the fact that hybrids of GM crops with added
nutrients will help the poor. GM crops are promoted in
developing nations due of high yields and the

conventional filters do not take care of disease-causing viruses,
there is tremendous scope for developing a filter made of
nanofibres capable of removing viruses from water, which would
effectively mean an end to water-borne diseases.

Conventional sources of energy are simply not enough to satisfy
the needs of a rapidly growing global population. To this end,
nanotechnology could well be the savior. Nanobattery increases

Aerospace engineering
Nanotech in aerospace engineering could be the key to making
movies like Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey a reality in
the near future. Space flight is slated to become more practical,
low-cost and more efficient. Carbon nanotubes would
significantly reduce the weight of spacecraft while increasing its
structural strength. Carbon nanotubes used to construct light

Electronics
Probably the one area where nanotechnology has already shown
astounding development is that of electronics. While computer
sizes have drastically decreased to sizes inconceivable a few years
ago, nanotechnology is looking at providing even more efficient,
light-weight and less power-consuming electronic devices.
Electrodes made from nanowires enable flat screen displays to

weeks progressed, it was apparent that continuously playing

with the Wii improved physical fitness and stamina –
something never before seen with video games. The Wii
acquired a cult following.
The Wii was released in India recently, and it is worth a look if
you are interested in turning your exercise into a game.

Dance Dance Revolution

Dance Dance Revolution is a Japanese arcade game that allows
players to compete in a very unusual way – by dancing! The
players stand on a special platform, and the game plays some
catchy tunes. The screen tells them the steps they need to dance
to in order to keep up with the time and the players try to follow
along as the tempo increases, until they simply cannot dance
fast enough.
The game created a sensation first in Japan, then in the
U.S., with crowds at the arcades watching enthusiastic
players drenched in sweat, as they played the game. Video
arcades in India too have the game, and it’s a perfect
example of how a video game can be designed to involve the
player in an active way.

Gamercize
What about the other extreme – turning the video games you
already have into a fun-filled exercise? A UK-based company
called Gamercize aims to fulfil the aim. Its products include a

Or, may be you have a great uncle

many iPod users but you can probably get the video file

your iPod.
To help you covert video files for your portable devices,
there are a number of easy and hard ways using specific
applications. myMovo is one such web application that
allows you to search, download and convert videos from
the Internet into suitable file types for your iPod, Zune,
cell phone, or Pocket PC (compatible with Windows XP

and Windows Vista but not with Mac). The difference

between other similar software and myMovo is that the
latter helps right from searching a particular video clip,
download, convert and finally help to transfer the video to
your device.
myMovo brings a wide variety of video content from news to
sports to music and entertainment videos from an array of sites
like ABC, Fox, CNN, Discovery channel, EOnline, ESPN, MTV,
Yahoo!, YouTube, etc. for your handheld devices. The
application streams videos through your computer and onto
your media player.
You can download this web/desktop application from
http://www.mymovo.com/downloads.html. Once the
download is complete, install the software and register for a
free account online to get started. Now, log in to your
myMovo account with your username and password and set
up your profile. Next, select your media player (for example,
iPod, Nano, PSP, Zune, iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia, Motorola,
and Samsung) to which the files are to be transferred. Check
the configuration for required options before starting to
convert. This would tell you how much space the application
can use on your hard drive for temporarily storing video files
for conversion.
Many people will have some favourite personal videos
stored on their computer. Using myMovo you can transfer
and carry them on your mobile media player as well. The
conversion of video files from one format to another may
take a few minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the
size of the file being converted. myMovo has a special
feature that comes handy to help you schedule the
conversions at a time you prefer.
Yet another in-built capability of this software is that it works
with iTunes, Zune and Windows Media Player. In case of
iTunes, myMovo can sync videos to your iPod automatically.
Nowadays, latest news comes forth in the form of ‘Feeds’,
which is a great way of keeping in touch with the latest
developments happening in the area of your interest. myMovo
also allows users to subscribe to RSS podcasts and it will
automatically convert any new video files to the format

is a method that’s quite useful if you want to hide a folder or file
and you’re pretty sure that anyone who is using the computer will
have no idea how to unhide the data. But, if there’s someone a
little more computer savvy, there is another way to create a secure
locked folder without having to buy any third- party software.
The software involves using a script to morph the folder into
something completely different so that it’s still visible, but nothing
inside the folder is accessible. Here, if you want to view the data,
you will have to run another script to morph it

the folder to be a shortcut.
Here are a few steps to create a protected folder in

Olympus
Mju – 1030SW

always gets a little smarter and tougher with each new
model. The 1030SW is a top-end 10-megapixel model
with awesome specifications and features. This digicam
can be truly termed ‘rugged’ as it can withstand any
damage even when dropped from a considerable height.
It can even make a scuba diver gape with awe and
surprise as the waterproofing is extended to 10 meter
deep. The Olympus Mju-1030SW has a wide-angle 28
mm lens for extreme outdoor conditions. Some of its
other features include face detection and shadow
adjustment technologies, which are worth an inclusion,
but a bit ineffective as compared to other cutting edge
cameras. With tough looks and a user-friendly menu
system, it is genuinely a robust camera for both amateurs
and expert photographers.

Tag Heuer
Formula 1 Watches

Heuer Formula 1 collection is an all-round

luminescent material, adorns the hands and
hour markers, assuring excellent readability.
The Tag Heuer Formula 1’s sapphire crystal
is three times harder than mineral glass and
is resistant to scratches. A 200-meter depth
rating ensures fumble-proof visibility on land
and sea. Its polished fixed bezel with 12-hour
scale for alarm function is one of the best
features. The stainless steel bracelet has a
double safety clasp with an extension system
to fit over a diving suit.
