JUNE 2, 2013 THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

CHRIST
THE

KING

For centuries todays feast was called Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and was observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday. In many countries it has now been moved to Sunday, so that more people may participate in its celebration. In its present form, the liturgy of this day focuses our attention on the meaning of the Eucharist that we celebrate so often. Todays reading from Genesis tells how Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine and prayed over Abram. Though it took place nearly two thousand years before Jesus, this event has long been used by the Church as an ancient foreshadowing of the Eucharist. The reading from Pauls Letter to the Corinthians is the same one we hear proclaimed on Holy Thursday, retelling the story of the first blessing and sharing of bread and wine at the Last Supper. Lukes tale of the miraculous feeding of the crowd in todays Gospel is also clearly intended to evoke the Eucharist. Thus todays readings give us three opportunities to deepen our appreciation of the Body and Blood of Christ. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Summer Church Attire

As we approach summer, I see already a change in dressing for Mass. * Please no shorts, short slacks or tank tops, for men and women, in the congregation. * All ministers of the Altar, adults and children, only dress shoes, when you serve. * It is always nice to see our ushers wearing a tie and dress coat for their ministry. * I personally will be more mindful of myself in wearing a suit coat when I come to church. It is always a joy and privilege to preside at Mass for the parish family. Rev. Peter P. Jarosz, Pastor

As often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. ~ 1 Corinthians 11:26

Year of Faith: Catechism Corner

The Church is one because of her source: the highest exemplar and source of this mystery is the unity, in the Trinity of Persons, of one God, the Father and the Son in the Holy Spirit. The Church is one because of her founder: for the Word made flesh, the prince of peace, reconciled all men to God by the cross,... restoring the unity of all in one people and one body. The Church is one because of her soul: It is the Holy Spirit, dwelling in those who believe and pervading and ruling over the entire Church, who brings about that wonderful communion of the faithful and joins them together so intimately in Christ that he is the principle of the Churchs unity. Unity is of the essence of the Church (CCC, n. 813)

The Body and Blood of Christ

In this informative presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn, a former Presbyterian minister, provides the biblical basis for the Church's teaching on the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the significance of the Feast of Corpus Christi, and gives us a greater understanding of our vocation to be the living presence of Christ in the world.

Parish and State Knights Encouraging Us in Prayer

As you may know, a bill redefining marriage in Illinois is currently before the General Assembly, which is scheduled to complete its spring session May 31. The Bishops of Illinois strongly oppose the proposed legislation and have warned, "When the ways of nature and natures God conflict with civil law, society is in danger." At the 130th Supreme Convention, the Knights of Columbus unanimously resolved that we "will never waver in our efforts to promote the Churchs understanding of marriage as the faithful, exclusive, and lifelong union of one man and one woman joined in an intimate partnership of life and love." There is concern that some in the Assembly may try to pass a bill redefining marriage in the closing days of its spring session. Encourage your friends, family members and fellow parishioners to do the same. As before and as always, pray that the Holy Spirit enlightens our elected officials to adopt laws that affirm the family and the authentic nature of marriage. Pray also for the State of Illinois and for our country. Fraternally, Knights of Columbus

St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry at Christ the King Parish

Thank you to all of the parishioners at Christ the King for your support of our mission to feed the needy in our area. Each month we provide food to approximately 472 people. We are also able to help with food for Pads, the 3rd Sunday of each month. We share our abundance with Diecke Home and with the York Township Seniors. It takes a lot of hands to help this many people. Our parish community is very generous with your monthly donations. Members of the parish also drop off items for distribution: eggs, cereal, garden vegetables. In addition to your donations, we pick up weekly from local businesses. Jewel provides produce and bakery weekly and often meat and dairy as well. Ultra Foods has been a great partner for many years. Capital Grill, Chipotle, Starbucks, Panera Bread, Pizza Hut and Bread Smith, also provide donations each week. We purchase food from Northern Illinois Food Bank monthly. The prices we pay are reasonable and each month we are also able to receive some items for free. We benefit from food drives from the Elmhurst and Villa Park Post Offices, Congregation Etz Chaim, Montini High School. The Youth Group at Christ the King and our parishioners. Not only do our clients need food items but we also make available personal care items, shampoo, laundry soap, diapers, dish soap, etc. We provide an Ultra food voucher to clients once a month, so they can purchase additional items they need. In May, we had a representative from the State of Illinois with us when the clients came in. She offered to help them apply for the SNAP food stamp program. Several of our clients were interested. She left us information to pass out to other clients and offered to come back anytime we need her. St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry at Christ the King Parish also coordinates with the parish for the children of our clients to receive Christmas Gifts through your generosity of the Giving Tree in the Narthex each year. One family in our parish has also donated new coats for the children each winter for several years. Their generosity is sincerely appreciated. I was hungry and you gave me food; thirsty and you gave me drink; a stranger and you welcomed me. (Matt 25: 35) God Bless our contributors. The volunteers at St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry at Christ the King Parish

A Stewardship Prayer for June

Dear Heavenly Father, As we dedicate this month of June to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we ask you to grant to us compassionate hearts; hearts rich with your love, embraced by your compassion. Grant us generous hearts: Hearts that never count the cost; hearts that seek to serve and not be served. Grant us hearts that love peace: Hearts that promote truth and justice, transform hatred and anger, and seek unity and reconciliation. Grant us hearts of a steward: Hearts that are filled with gratitude, eager to share, and long to give back to you. Grant us hearts filled with your Spirit: Hearts open to conversion, filled with hope, and on fire with your Word. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen
