SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Proposed business is Private School Bus Service called SMKS Transport and Tours Company Limited . The Company will concentrate its efforts on transporting the students ages three to eighteen (318) years, within the corporate area and not limited to Portmore and Spanish Town environs. Our operation will be mainly on the bases of drop offs and pick-ups. The operation of the business will be carried out by the company executives, namely Ms. Safiyyah Plummer, Ms. Shaneace Mundy, Mr. Maldini Mullings and Mr. Kirk Richards. We will all seek funding from a reputable funding agency such as NCB for the start-up of the business. Through the conduct of a feasibility study, we at SMKS Transport and Tours have established that there is a need for our services by parents who seek a reliable and convenient pick up service for their children to be both transported to and or from school and then back home. There was found to be safety issues as well as the problem of high taxi fares. In addition, parents tend to make grave sacrifices when it is time to collect their child. This is mainly prevalent with the high traffic motorists encounter daily in the lunch hour parents have from work. Often times the parents missing out on important work related duties as well as wastage of fuel consumption. We at SMKS believe that we can satisfy the needs of Kingston Metropolitan Region to those parents with the need for safety, comfort and reliable transport service. Our capital outlay is projected to be $25 million dollars. This is inclusive of all technical, operational and marketing needs. This cost will see us through the initial set-up and for three months post commencement of operations. Our main objective will be to provide transport service for our future generation which will be creatively marketed. We intend to provide fast, efficient, affordable and customer friendly service to all our clients. Depending on the responsiveness of the market, we plan to expand the business after success is achieved, to accommodate corporation transportation services on various excursions in the corporate area.

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

Our main competitors will be route taxis, hackney carriages, Kosmos Tours, Knutsford Express and a few other small tours providers in and around the corporate area as well as Lin-Blacks Tours and Bright Stars Transportation out of Pembroke Hall and Portmore St. Catherine. However, based on our findings the market share we currently possess is adequate to sustain the business; in fact, we see that we are able to capture other markets, but that is in phases to come. We see ourselves as socially responsible company and as such we tend to foster economic and social growth in our community. We hope that through our business venture we will provide a means of generating revenue for the community and for us as share holders of this innovative company.

2. INDUSTRY ANALYSIS
2.1 Overview of the Industry
From the extensive research done, it was found that our competitors are located in the Portmore, Duhaney Park, Constant Spring, Hagley Park and Downtown areas. They too operate private transport services similar to our proposed offerings. Some operate within a minute area, relatively close to their home office. A few offer the service to a wide cross section of the market. None of which are properly marketed to attract the major unfulfilled market that is obviously present to the naked eye. The existence of the competition is not expected to affect our business significantly, as it is assumed that they have not seriously decided to delve into the market the way it ought to. The risk level is thus far very timid and unsure. After analyzing our target area, it is noticeable that our proposed business should be located in the central part of Constant Spring Road Area. Here, it would be easily accessible by our clients and current target market. The cost for our services is more economical and customer service is of a higher standard than that of our competitors. We plan to have a reduced waiting time for those wishing to take up the service. We will start our pick-ups as early as 6am in a logistic format. One which will give us the optimum response time in order to ensure a timely drop off of our young and energetic clients. Our service will be reliant on effective time management skills and early childhood training for our driver/staff members. It must also be noted that as for existing taxi service providers, do not have vehicles available for periods up to an hour, which means that customers have to wait lengthy periods for available taxis. We are aware of this problem and will ensure that this does not occur under our management. We know that communication is vital to our type of business when we are carrying around precious cargos. What is therefore highlighted as our main competitive edge, is the introduction of a closed circuit system whereby parents and guardians alike may view their childs safety and where-about as many times they wish. They could also tap into the speed of travel and the various cognitive activities and sing-alongs while en-route to their respective destination.

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

The ultimate advantage that we will have however is the price that we are proposing. We intend to operate at a lower cost. Our study have shown that a main reason why more persons are not taking advantage of this lucrative service, is because their prices are just too high and as such, they will be willing to pay less while still receiving quality service. From the surveys conducted and also by means of face to face interactions with some of the respondents, they have disclosed that they would prefer to utilize our service being proposed. Our aggressive marketing strategy will be geared towards placing us in a position to be the front runner and will allow us to compete against all hackney carriages. Based solely on the respondents, the proposed business seems to be a feasible one to pursue.

2.2 Consideration of the Competition

Analysis indicates that in terms of competition, cost, financing, quality of service and uniqueness will be SMKSs main selling point. Therefore the major concerns with breaking into the industry will be mostly consumed with that of introducing a new and somewhat radically different service to the targeted persons at an affordable price.

2.3 Legal Constraint and Statutory Requirements

The company will comply with all the legal requirements for the business to operate. As stipulate under the Jamaican Constitution under the Registrar of Companies Act, new businesses have to fulfill certain requirements before establishment which includes: 1. Licensing and bonding requirements 2. Permits 3. Health, workplace, or environmental regulations 4. Special regulations covering your industry or profession 5. Insurance coverage 6. Trademarks, copyrights, patents (pending, existing, or purchased)

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

2.4 Regulatory Bodies
The governing bodies that will determine how the company is established and operated, in order to ensure product safety, social responsibility, tax compliance as well as environmental protection are:1. Companies Office of Jamaica (The Office of the Registrar of Companies) 2. Registrar General Office (to get TRN) 3. Ministry of Labour (to get NIS) 4. Bureau of Standards 5. Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (for a trade mark) 6. Consumer affairs Commission 7. Fair Trade Commission 8. Price Control agencies 9. National Environmental Protection agency (Nepa) which s the body that regulates the National Resource Conservation Act (NRCA)

Ministry Of Transport & Works This Ministry of Transport & Works was established with the mandate to provide a safe and efficient transportation system, the building and maintenance of high quality infrastructure works, including roads. National Works Agency Formerly the Public Works Department, the National Works Agency is responsible for the management of the islands public works infrastructure. Island Traffic Authority The island Traffic Authority administers the provisions of the Road Traffic Act, which speaks to the testing of vehicles to ensure fitness and worthiness and general compliance with safety standards. SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd. 3. DEFINITION OF THE BUSINESS

3.1 The Business Concept
The business concept being proposed by SMKS Transport Service is the launch of a school bus pick-up service exclusively available to pre-school, primary, preparatory and a few high school students mainly in the congested area of Kingston Metropolitan region. This concept came about because we thought that there was a need for Children to have its own personal and private transport service. One that would unknowing to them , take away from the parents the immense toll in having to do it themselves, day in, day out. For some, it would have otherwise be an expensive venture to solicit reliable service from other providers. In addition, there is often time the case of parents struggling to inconvenience other family members and friends in order to pick up their own children from school to a final destination such as extra curriculum activities, home or work even. With the high incidence of robberies and kidnappings that have been prevalent in many random communities. We therefore decided to explore the idea of providing an alternate solution to commuting between home and school.

3.2 The Current Offering

Presently, SMKS Ltd will place much of its focus on plying the routes where students are living in high concentration and in particular of the scheduled thoroughfare. Students can therefore reach on school on time, while parents and guardians can focus in also getting to their respective office on time with less financial woes. Parents can be assured of a reliable, safer and economic means of their children getting home or to any place they wish for the child to be. The significant difference with SMKS ltd. However lies in the fact that we will go directly to our clients place of residence, or directly to every childs class room to pick up. We aim not only to meet the parents expectations, we aim to exceed it.

10

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

3.2 Projected Growth
SMKS ltd. aims at establishing a long term business relationship within a wide cross section of schools Parents Teachers Association and other recognizable bodies such as the Portmore School Bus Association. We believe that this venture will aid to facilitate us in driving costs like carriage insurance down. Thus, SMKS will be able offer further discount to our clientele. We however believe that our main aim now is to provide the students with a safe, reliable and comfortable means of transportation. We plan to also tap into the excursion market so as to fill the gap in our down time operations when schools are not in sessions. There is a clear demand for many young adults and party promoters that tend to struggle to get comfortable buses for their respective events. In addition, SMKS ltd. will also share a high interest in the corporate world of luxury buses whenever they put on their tours and special events. Heavy marketing and promotions will be the driving force to be able to attract many of the interested and profitable ventures in mind. The intervention of SMKS ltd. thus would be to provide a solution for such opportunities. For the medium and long term, beginning by the end of year three would be to establish a niche market for those students outside of our main target points of Kingston & St. Andrew, Portmore and St. Catherine. Thus, we do intend to transport an increasing student population located no more than 30km outside of Spanish Town. Hence for example, we would seek to target high school students into Kingston & St. Andrew and back. We believe that this will be a very lucrative opportunity where our focus could turned to after acquiring an additional fleet of energy saving busses. Finally, as we aim to increase our resources to satisfy our target market, SMKS ltd will conduct further research to determine how feasible it is to operate an after care service as part of a new product design and strategy to stimulate the demand for one or a combination of both services. We are hopeful to commence those operations to include an after care venture by years four or five.

4. PURPOSE OF THE BUSINESS PLAN
A business plan is a blueprint of the business. It is aimed at defining the path in which the business should go and the approaches that should be taken to get the business on that path. The business plan provides the opportunity to examine the status of the business, whether it will be successful or not and also if it can be done to make the idea fruitful. There are several components of a typical business plan. These include the following: I. II. III. IV. The Organizational and Management Plan The Marketing Plan The Financial Plan The Human Resource Plan A business plan for any business venture is expected to fulfill several purposes aimed at benefitting the business. One of its Purposes includes obtaining financing for the business. Financing can be obtained from banks and other institutions. When approaching such agencies for financing, they normally require an overview of the business plan for that venture. The agencies will need to see the plan because they will need to assess the viability of the business for which they are granting a loan. The loan is granted based on their assessment of whether or not the entity has the potential to generate capital to repay such loans if granted. This business plan serves as a means of attracting investors also. Potential investors will want to view the business plan because plan because they will want to know how successful the business idea is. Hence, if they plan to invest, then it could be determined the possible rewards that could be reaped. Therefore, it is ideal that the business plan is well thought out and presented properly.

12

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

The business plan also aims at attracting key employees. These employees will want to know the plans of the business and the path in which the business is heading. Top managers with years of expertise for example will request a business plan before they sign a contract or commit themselves to a firm. One of the reasons for this is that they may prefer to associate themselves with business ventures that seem more profitable and prosperous. They also may prefer working with a company that has a good reputation. A business plan will also assist in monitoring the longevity and the future of the company. The business plans projections and operations normally spans over a long term period, usually up to five years.

To give your new business the best possible chance of success.

Writing a business plan will ensure that you pay attention to both the broad operational and financial objectives of your new business and the details, such as budgeting and market planning. Taking the time to work through the process of writing a business plan will make for a smoother startup period and fewer unforeseen problems as your business becomes established. To make business planning manageable and effective.

A business plan is essential if you're thinking of starting a business, but it's also an important tool for establishing SMKS. Viable businesses are dynamic; they change and grow. The company's original business plan needs to be revised as new goals are set. Reviewing the business plan can also help you see what goals have been accomplished, what changes need to be made, or what new directions your company's growth should take. To attract investors.

In order for SMKS to attract investors, a well strategized business plan is needed. A presentation may appeal their interest, however they'll need a well-written document they can take away and study before they'll be prepared to make any investment commitment. Be prepared for your business plan to be scrutinized; both venture capitalists and angel investors will want to conduct 13

extensive background checks and competitive analysis to be certain that what's written in your business plan is indeed the case.

5. BUSINESS FEASIBILITY 5.1 Analysis of Demand The demand for the school bus service is relatively high. The feasibility study conducted revealed that approximately 80% of the respondents indicated that they would utilize the service if the business got started. Additionally, just about the 50% percentage indicated that the service would make them feel safer. This signifies that the business concept is viable and would be able to supply the demand of the targeted market and this market would be enough to sustain the business venture. With the majority of schools locating in the corporate area in company with the demand for our service we are also expecting a large number of person to become aware of the service which revert back the expansion of the business.

5.2 Analysis of Risk Risks and uncertainties are associated with any business. The major risk associated with starting this venture would be a lower than anticipated level of responsiveness towards the service for a number of reasons. The feasibility study indicated that the demand for the service would be high. However, once the service is implemented, it is therefore believed that a heavy reliance would be places on potential customers who were anticipating this new product. Thus, the demand is expected to make the company sustainable until word of mouth and heavy marketing campaigns become on-going in order to stimulate demand. The marketing strategy will need to be strong before, during and potentially even after demands have gain substantial growth being reflected in revenues. It is therefore believed that the main aim during the introduction of the transport service would be keep prospects aware of the existence of the service and also to attract and retain new ones so as to allow them the experience of the major benefits of utilizing such service.

Financial Risk Every business has the potential to fail, but this risk is normally higher within the first three years of existence. Our weekly rate of $1200 - $1600 one way and $2200 - $3000 two way was decided upon by carefully analyzing the result of our feasibility study. The biggest danger of SMKS comes from not providing a quality service that satisfies both the children and parents who are our main clients. When our customers are satisfied they will contribute to our business for years, through their recommendations and referrals. SMKS will make sure that the environment is comfortable for the child/children are safe. We will

17

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

employ certified and highly trained staff to oversee the children, but most of all they will love what they do. The start-up capital will be sourced by a general loan from the bank along with the partners pooling their individual funds. The accumulated funds received will be used to lease the space on Constant Spring Rd and with the first option to buy after two years. The money from the loan will also help in paying for the expense that SMKS may incur for the first year. Operational Risk Within the transport industry most of the operational risks have to deal with children. As a result, the transport authority makes its mandatory to have certain requirements in place. Staff Screening All staff shall be of responsible character and suitable to meet the needs of children. Staff will not be permitted if they have been convicted of child abuse or neglect. Staff will be asked to sign an authorization allowing the SMKS to investigate past employment and request information from previous employers.

Health of Personnel All employees will have a current physical on file, signed by a physician. All physicals will be updated annually as mandated. Sick employees will be encouraged to stay at home and will be replaced with qualified substitute.

Staff Qualifications

18

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

All drivers must obtain certification by a reputable and accredited institution and also possesses driving experience within the industry.

A 24-hour security system will be implemented by Guardsman Alarms to constantly monitor the premises. A fire management system will be implemented; staff and children will be trained on how to evacuate buses/premises in the event of accident/fire and how to use fire extinguishers. 5.3 Environmental Impact The business being proposed will pose some amount of threat to the environment. The threats being acknowledged is mainly air pollution resulting from the exhaust from the vehicles. Currently, the Jamaican society has not adapted to the concept of going green, hence the rate of pollutants that are given off from motor vehicles will add to the pollution. Though technically a threat, the heightened awareness of air pollution will be our selling point to those that are sensitive towards the needs of the environment. This will be a subject of our marketing campaigns thus bringing the attention for families to help in the reduction of emissions. It is SMKS ltds intention to acquire and employ eco-friendly resources in order to help preserve the environment.

19

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

6. JUSTIFICATION OF THE BUSINESS 6.1 Economic Benefits The ultimate purpose of business, in comparison to a charity or outreach program, is to make money and to satisfy a demand. We have observed that parents as well as the students suffer alike in the mornings and evenings to get safe and reliable transportation. Whether the parents have their own transportation or not, it is indeed still a challenge for most to get ready and drop kids to school then rush back into the morning traffic in order to get to work on time. Here, SMKS ltd. believes that it will spell great economic benefits to parents, especially those who attend evening classes themselves, to have a reliable bus service to transport their kids to and from school. Savings can also be established too in the form of a lower gas bill. SMKS ltd holds the view that parents will no longer need to leave work within their lunch hour only to go and pick up their children from school. Through analysis of this business concept, we are confident that this service is one that can satisfy the demand of the public and meet their requirements. This will be achieved by focusing our efforts towards the satisfaction of our customers reliability of the service and going the extra mile in developing new ideas and products to meet customers demand. 6.2 Social Benefits The advent of such a service would provide job opportunities through the contracting of drivers and other administrative representatives to the company. In addition to job satisfaction, the nature of the service is one that promotes sustainability, efficiency, convenience and safety for students when travelling.

20

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

6.3 Personal Benefits Embarking on such a venture will provide great benefits to us as entrepreneurs. Firstly, we benefit in terms of being independent from bureaucratic decision making and the red tape usually associated with being an employee in someone elses establishment. We would also have the added benefit of working flexible hours. Secondly, there is added benefit to be gained from the direct profits earned by the organization. Finally, it is indeed an innate pleasure and satisfaction to know that we have contributed to the development and well being of our country as a whole in what little way that we can.

10 MARKETING PLAN 10.2 Product SMKS is a school bus service that is offered on in the corporate area as well as Portmore and Spanish Town, St.Catherine. For the first 3-5 months of this service, ten (10) drivers will be contracted to work for us. The routes designated to run are Barbican, Mona, Havendale, Constant Spring Rd, Red Hills Rd, Prembroke hall, Hagley Park and downtown just to name a few. The service will provide a safe and efficient transport from one location to the next. We operate on a 24hr service with regular office hour between 10am - 8pm This product is offered at the introductory stage where sale and awareness of the service will be very low; but this is expected to change as the service move onto the other stages of the Product Life Cycle. 10.3 Target Market The target market of a product/service is that segment of the market that will most likely purchase your product or use the service. When selecting your target market one must ensure that the market is accessible and substantial for firms to make profit. SMKS target market was selected based on geographic location, on behavioral variables such as benefits, occasion and readiness of the parents/guardian to use the school bus service. The company identifies that its target market consists of individuals in all social class. The potential clients will be mostly those who work and conduct business in the Half Way Tree and surrounding areas. We believe that the heavy traffic occurring both mornings and evenings will be enough to deter workers from spending too much time in traffic before going to work or within their lunch times.

34

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

10.4 Place The second P which we will discuss is place. This consists of a number of elements such as distribution. These are channels that a marketer uses to ensure that the product/service reaches the final users. SMKS distribution service is passed directly to the consumer (passenger) from the source. Here, the owners have deliberate control over the operations such as scheduling. This helps in reducing conflicts that may often times arise. Tickets can be obtained easily from most of the corporate schools upon demand. 10.5 Price Price is the cost that consumers will pay in-order to acquire or use a product. It is also the most flexible p in the market mix and is the only means by which the firm gains revenue. SMKS will use many competitive advantage strategies to provide better and quality service than the competitors in the market. Target Return Pricing will be used for the transportation service offered by SMKS Ltd. This pricing method would satisfy a predetermined return on investment (ROI) set by the partners. The return on investment calculation is the total amount the partners believe has been utilized to bring the excellent and superior service in the transportation industry so as to establish and retain a position as an industry leader. SMKS will offer lower fares than established players in the market. See appendix for specific prices for the different services offered by SMKS Ltd. The three pricing objectives we chose to take into consideration are: Revenue-Oriented Pricing Operations-Oriented Pricing 35

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

Target Market Pricing Revenue Oriented Pricing We will be setting a price for the service that will maximize revenue for the target market. For example, our main focus will be catering for parents who encounter difficulties transporting their kids to school. Operations-Oriented Pricing This seeks to balance supply and demand for our ervice. We will introduce cheaper prices during the lull periods (or when demand is low) and increase prices during peak periods (when demand is higher) for example, during the holiday season.

Target Market Pricing We will be using different prices for different target markets. For example, we will be offering parents who put more than one child at the service a discount as opposed to those who only have one child. The pricing strategy we intend to adopt in order to achieve our service pricing objectives set above is by Market skimming which is to skim maximum revenues layer by layer. This is where we plan to utilize the highest possible price because of the following reasons: The service quality of being a 24-hour service and the image will support its higher price.

36

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

Based on research, there are quite a number of persons that are interested in the service at a reasonable price. Based on what we are offering competitors will not be able to enter the market easily and undercut the high price. SMKS promotional strategy will match all the elements in the marketing mix while taking into consideration each stage of the service life cycle. The various promotions will be communicated to the respect market segment in a quick, easy and effective manner utilizing the following medium:

Meeting/Seminars In an effort to get to know our parent and for them to meet the drivers and attendants we

would use meeting and seminars to promote our service. Based on the feaslibilty study we found that the best way to promote the service is the build a personal relationship with our client and teachers. We aim to build our service on trust and integrity and in order to do so we need a mutual relationship with our clients. Television Advertising is described as a paid, non-personal communication by an organization using various media such as the television to reach its target market. SMKS will promote its services on the number one television station in Jamaica TVJ. Ads will be aired during the popular programs such as; Smile Jamaica, Rising Stars, Entertainment Report, and the Ity and Fancy Cat Show. This type of promotion will help to increase the brand awareness and the services offered. 37

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

Radio SMKS Ltd. plans to use popular radio stations such as Zip 103, Ire FM, Fame, RJR and Power 106 just to name a few to promote the services that will be offered. This media will allow us to target a wide demographic group. We will also promote the services on News Talk 93 Fm which operates on the campus of the University of the West Indies which tend to cater for late teen to mid twenties age group. The ads will be aired during the most popular programs in hope of attracting new clients. Newspaper Advertisements will be placed in the Daily Gleaner, The Jamaica Observer and Star, three times per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) during the introductory stages of the product life cycle and so that persons can be aware of all the services offered by SMKS. Special ads will also be placed during peak periods such as the beginning of the school semesters, Christmas and the party seasons and through the wedding seasons too. Social Media Web pages will be set up on popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, to reach potential clients who are more technologically included and spend most on their time on these social networks. YouTube will also be used to show video clips of the various services offered. Telemarketing The firm will also utilize the receptionist to do telemarketing via identifying large prospective companies and seek to make arrangements to have audience with the employees of these companies to promote SMKS services. In addition, special discount packages will be 38

SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

offered to the company if ten or more employees from the same company visit our establishment over a consecutive two week period where each person spends a minimum for either service.

The capital injections will come about with usage of land, homes and motor vehicles as collaterals owned by each business partner. However, there are investment capital friends and family of the partners and finally a line of credit from the Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica.

SMKS Ltd. is making the following assumptions as it regards the projected cash flow; Revenue is received from core services. Depreciate is done straight line basis of ten percent (10%) per annum. . Sales will increase in the second year by 13% and 16% in the third. There are no intentions to invest in any additional capital equipment within the first 3 years. SMKS Transport and Tours Company Ltd.

12.1 Implementation Schedule The partners of SMKS have seen a great opportunity for the company to thrive and be successful in selling our services. The partners have decided to see how feasible their assumptions were and if there were potential customers. They conducted a feasibility study over a three month period observing, gathering information and feedbacks of potential customers. The feasibility study will provide essential evidence to decide whether or not there is a real need for the service; identify the segment of the market and the different aspects of running the business. Shortly after analyzing the findings of the study, a business plan will be drafted based on the business itself, marketing considerations, management and human resources, technical and operational considerations and financial considerations. We will take approximately two months to complete the business plan; the partners will then seek to obtain legal requirements and approvals that are necessary for the development of SMKS to the public. Upon completion of all legal documents which will take us in the third month the necessary equipments will be acquired to begin operation. The company will do various forms of advertising within the fifth to the sixth month. We will depend on client referrals and community exposure as our main way to reach new clients. During the sixth month the managers will be finishing up with the interviews and assignment of the staff. Our primary focus for the next six months is to incorporate our services in full-scale. We will leverage our skills and reputation and our highly visible location to increase our client base with more extensive marketing campaigns on the benefits of our services. 12.1 Gantt Chart

CONCLUSION After carefully analyzing the result from the survey carried out, we came to the conclusion that the study was a success. The results revealed that this is a lucrative business to venture into and the time for such a new innovative business (SMKS Ltd.) is now, as customers are demanding more than just the ordinary bus services and experience. They also need quality, comfort, clean environment and good customer service. The Half Way Tree area is the location of choice to maximize our revenue but there are future plans to expand to other areas outside of St. Catherine such as Linstead to capture potential customers that find it difficult to traverse to Kingston for school.
