ABSTRACT

The problem of motivation and job satisfaction in Nigerian organizations especially in Dangote cement plc, gboko plant is that of poor productivity, and performance. it centered on poor environmental conditions, non monetary incentives, poor working schedules, and high level of stress. It is therefore in view of this that the researcher seeks to examine this problem understudy. The objective of this study therefore, is to expose those factors that are responsible for poor level of motivation and job satisfaction in organizations. The methodology applied for testing the formulated hypothesis is the simple correlation analysis. In order to achieve this, three hypothesis where formulated from relevant primary and secondary data gathered through questionnaires. A total of 111 questionnaires where administered but due some errors only 98 questionnaires where rightly completed and returned to the researcher, therefore presentation and data analysis is based on the 98 questionnaires returned to the researcher. Major findings show that motivation and job satisfaction brings about employee performance, increased productivity, and job satisfaction of employees. This can be achieved through proper remuneration, in service training, good working relationship between employee and management and recognition of staff in the management process. On the other hand the absence of motivation will result in a poor employee performance, decrease in productivity, poor commitment and job dissatisfaction. It is therefore recommended that Management must ensure that its employees are motivated and satisfied with their jobs at a healthy cost. Management should make provision for adequate remuneration, in service training, job security, participatory management, and a conducive and peaceful working environment so that organizational goals can be readily achieved in Dangote cement plc, gboko plant.

Job satisfaction, employee commitment, performance and productivity are areas of major interest in this research as the level of motivation and job satisfaction within an organisation will have a direct bearing on these variables. Therefore to achieve organisational goals, managers must understand what motivates people to work hard, what does a person want or need from work and what brings about job satisfaction? This will help managers design a reward system that will satisfy these needs. This research seeks to examine motivation and job satisfaction and its impact on productivity, employee performance, and commitment in Nigerian organisations for result oriented performance and national development.

measures that will enable them to improve their performance and competitiveness (Dodd, 2003). SCOPE OF THE STUDY The researcher believes to a large extent that the quality of any study involves a wide range of

activities in the gathering of data within a given period. This study examines motivation and job satisfaction, and its impact on productivity, and employee performance with specific reference to Dangote Cement Plc, Gboko plant. The study seeks to examine the effects, impact of motivation and job satisfaction on organisational productivity, how motivation and job satisfaction can bring about employee performance, commitment and job satisfaction. The scope of this study extends also to the negative effects of motivation and job satisfaction on productivity, performance, effectiveness, commitment, and service delivery and how they can be improved to bring about positive results such as profitability, increased service delivery, improved decision making and also create a harmonious working relation between employers, employees and the unions.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Findings from the study have a lot of bearing on certain groups such as employers, employee,

and students. The study concerns on aspect of personnel management that deals with human relations. The study seeks to provide some additional knowledge for effective management of personnel and how it will contribute to productivity, employee performance, increased commitment and job satisfaction of employees. This research work will be of great importance to organisations in understanding and implementing motivation and job satisfaction processes to arrive at desired results of profitability,

improved decision making, increased service delivery, productivity and, performance. Members of the public and students will find in this research significant materials of interest.

DELIMINATION OF THE STUDY This research work is limited to Dangote Cement Plc Gboko plant as a case study. The research is limited to materials sourced from journals, textbooks, papers and the internet.

Therefore availability of of materials is a challenge. Not left out is the fact that there is limited time allocated for completion of the project. That is why the research is limited to Dangote Cement Plc, Gboko plant. Another challenge is that of finance which constrained the ability of the researcher to source for materials. This challenges the researcher was able to manage by limiting this work to the chosen case study and resorts to available secondary and primary source that are relevant to the study.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

1. Productivity: is a measure of the efficiency of production. Defined as the ratio of production output to what is required to produce it(inputs). It is measured in output per hour. Can also be seen as change in gross domestic product per hour of labour. 2. Employee commitment: this is the degree to which employees are bound emotionally or intellectually to their organisation. 3. Leadership style: is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans and motivating people. Can also be defined as the different approaches by which a leader may fulfil his or her leadership role. 4. Staff turnover: refers to the number or percentage of workers who leave an organisation and are replaced. Can also do be referred to the movement of people out of an organisation.

5. Job satisfaction: refers to the attitude and feeling people have about their work. Positive and favourable attitude towards the job indicates job satisfaction. Job satisfaction is measured using rating scales where employees report their thoughts and reactions on job. 6. Employee performance: is a rating system used in corporations to determine the abilities and output of an employee. employee performance is measured in terms of product quality, cost effectiveness, timeliness. It is a continuous process.
