Additional notes
The word ensiferum is Latin, and upon translation it literally means "the bearer of iron." In context, the word means "the wearer of the sword," or "sword wearer."
Frontman Jari Menp quit in 2004 after creating his own project, Wintersun. Petri Lindroos of Norther was brought in, inititally to cover for live dates, and eventually agreed to join permanently. Markus Toivonen is now the only founding member left in the band. Markus Toivonen never played in Scent of Flesh - there are two different persons with the same name.

On January 4th, 2006, Infernus was taken to court on charges of kidnapping, participation in gang rape and illegal weapon possession. With exception of admitting some [...] [read more]

Additional notes
An influence on death metal, though they basically played sloppy, mostly fast black metal. (Notable exception: Triumph of Death, which is sloppy, kinda slow to midpaced black metal.) Thomas Gabriel Warrior was never a member of Coroner; he only did guest
vocals on their "Death Cult" demotape. The last thing planned with Hellhammer was to record a full-length called "To Mega Therion" in mid 1984 with new tracks called "Beyond The Beyond", "Ride On The Wings Of Sabbath", "Defeat Of The Serpent", "Demon Entrails", "Phallical Tantrum" and others. But these plans never happened, and also the songs were never recorded, but only partially written.

The original name of the band formed in 1985 was Purgatory but was later changed to Iced Earth before they released their last demo. Gene Adam was originally going to perform on "Night of the Stormrider." Jon Schaffer was concerned that Gene wouldn't be able to handle the vocal melodies for the new material and asked him to take singing lessons. Demonaz (1989 - 1997) left the band due to severe tendonitis in his arms but continued to contribute with lyrics. He used to live in the basement of Abbath's [...] [read more]

One of the pioneers of the melodic-death sound.

Additional notes
***ATTENTION: DO NOT add any of the Gull Records repackagings of 'Rocka Rolla' and 'Sad Wings of Destiny'. Not only are these pointless reissues, but they are not supported, and even opposed by Judas Priest.*** The band ``Freight`` was formed by schoolmates Kenneth ``K.K.`` Downing and Ian Hill in 1969. They quickly found drummer John Ellis, and decided that they needed a vocalist. In 1970, a band called Judas Priest had broken up, and Al Atkins was out of a job. [...] [read more]

Lordi's music has been described as a mix of AC/DC, KISS, and W.A.S.P. Kalma and Enary left in the second half of 2005. Lordi won the Eurovision song contest 2006 in Athens (Greece) with the song ``Hard Rock Hallelujah.`` Mr. Lordi was born and grew up in Rovaniemi, north of Finland. After the Eurovision contest, a central square in Rovaniemi will be called Lordi.

Many credit Macabre as being one of the first bands to play a style of music which would influence death metal. They weren't really a death metal band themselves but their lyrical content and grindcore sounds furthered what would become death metal. Macabre has been known to refer to their style of music as ``murder metal`` which is also the name of their 2003 full-length album. Corporate Death interviewed serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer (for the "Dahmer"-album) and John Wayne Gacy while they were still alive.

Manowar means in old English "the ancient wooden Battleship". Manowar were once in the Guinness Book of World Records during the 80's as being the worlds loudest band, with the vocalist singing at a record breaking decibel rate of 136. Scott Columbus left Manowar between "Kings of Metal" and "The Triumph of Steel" to care for his ill son. He rejoined for 1996's "Louder than Hell" along with new guitarist Karl Logan.

Ignominious is an internet bootleg. Do not add it! Known as one of the pioneering bands of the death metal genre. They're the first death metal band to have a significant commercial success, selling over a million albums throughout their career. This is due in part to them being the first death metal band to get signed to a major record label called Giant. Giant records was in association with Warner Brothers records. From 1986 - 1989 the band was called Damage. In 1989 they changed their name to Morgana Lefay. In '97, Morgana Lefay split up. Persson, Heder and Soderling kept the name, but changed style completely. Rytknen and Eriksson were joined by members from Fantasmagoria, and continued under the name Lefay. In September of 2004 Lefay resigned with Black Mark and regained the rights to use their full name.

Will Rahmer was Incantation's vocalist during the period John McEntee played in Mortician. The band has an obsession with horror and scifi movies, which is where their main influences comes from lyric wise. In every album, they use stock sample footage from movies on about every track. Will Rahmer is the owner of Redrum Records (aka Mortician Records,) which has a line-up of death metal locals like Fecal Corpse. Will Rahmer is [...] [read more]

Additional notes
Upon forming Motrhead in 1975, bassist and vocalist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister already had quite a lengthy career behind him - most of it as a guitarist. After short stints in Manchester outfits The Rainmakers (1963-1966) and Motown Sect (1966), he joined The Rocking Vicars on guitars. Releasing two singles and achieving popularity in northern England, they earned the distinction of being the first band to play behind the Iron Curtain - in Yugoslavia - and were invited, oddly enough, as special guests [...]

Additional notes
``Black Metal Ist Krieg`` album featured both Butcher and Occulta Mors on session drums. The band's year of creation, as well as the dates for the release of the first two demos, and the time some of the songs supposedly were written can be seen as doubtful, due to contradicting interviews. Upcoming releases, scheduled for early 2007: ``Semper Fidelis`` CD / LP box limited to 99 copies ``Dead-Ication`` live DVD ``Left Behind In Suicide`` limited 7`` picture EP NOTE: Do NOT add the album ``Kriegsnebel``, it's a BOOTLEG.

Additional notes
The idea of Nightwish was "born" in July 1996 at midnight when Tuomas was spending a night with his friends around a campfire. The first three songs, which were acoustic mood music, were recorded between October and December 1996. At that time the band had three members: Tuomas, Tarja and Emppu. Originally, Tarja Turunen wasn't into metal at all (nor did she
even know what it was). She was approached by the first two members at her school at the time and asked to join because they knew she was one [...] [read more]

Additional notes
Nevermore was formed after Dane and Sheppard's previous band, Sanctuary (US), bit the dust. Despite maintaining an admirably consistent line-up since their formation, securing a regular axe partner for Jeff Loomis has always been a problem for Nevermore. Curran Murphy (Annihilator), Chris Broderick (Jag Panzer) and Steve Smyth (Testament), have filled in the second guitarist spot for various tours in the past, with the latter being given the job permanently in 2004. Jeff Loomis tried out for Megadeth after Chris Poland was fired in 1987. Not to be confused with Nevermore from New York. Opeth have never distributed any demo. Their only official recording prior to "Orchid" is a promo that was only sent to labels. Do not add more demos! The band's name came from a Wilbur Smith novel. Opeth is the name of a city on the moon, though in the book it was Opet, without the h. Opeth started with Mikael kerfeldt and Anders Nordin, long-time friends, forming Eruption in 1987. They practiced in a cellar in Srskogen, playing mostly death metal covers. In 1988, the band became [...] [read more]

Additional notes
Currently enjoying megastar status due to an MTV docu-sitcom starring the man himself and his family called "The Osbournes." Currently, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne are holding a reality show on MTV called "Battle For Ozzfest," which is a show that'll have one local band in the US to perform on the second slot stage in 2005, plus they'll get a record deal and mainstream stardom. Ozzy Osbourne was also guest vocals for Rob Zombie's solo project and for Black Label Society. He was also guest (backing) vocals on Gary Moore's "The Law of the Jungle" (album"Victims of the Future") - although, the album info fails to mention this.

(L to R) Phil , Vinnie, Dime and Rex Pantera was formed in 1981 by brothers Darrell Lance Abbott and Vincent Paul Abbott. They started out as a KISS-influenced glam band. They added bassist Robert ``Rex`` Brown, and changed their names to Diamond Darrell, Vinnie Paul and Rexx Rocker, respectively. They found vocalist Donnie Hart, who sang for a few rehearsals, and then Terry Glaze "Terrence Lee". Queensrche kept their original lineup until their 1997 album "Hear in the Now Frontier," after which guitarist Chris DeGarmo left the band. However, he rejoined around 2001, but left again after the release of the 2003 album "Tribe". Kelly Gray is more well known for being a producer for non-Metal bands than his time in Queensrche (although he did a widely-panned job of producing Nevermore's 2003 "Enemies of Reality" album). Queensrche were briefly detained in Amsterdam on 11/06/2006 for being suspected of secretly bringing a firearm into the country it was, in fact, only a prop used in their stageshow.

Additional notes
Contrary to popular belief, Satyricon was never called Omnipotence. According to CarlMichael Eide, he and Wargod started the band in 1990, playing death metal influenced by Cadaver, Carcass and Napalm Death. Hvard joined later on. At that time they were called Eczema. In 1991, they decided to start playing black metal, so the name was changed to Satyricon and then Satyr joined [...] [read more]

Additional notes
Sentenced began as a Death Metal band with some melodic elements, with Miika Tenkula on vocals, then progressed to become even more melodic, switching to Taneli Jarva on "North From Here". Jarva departed after "Love and Death", and Sentenced became closer to Heavy Metal, with the new singer. Today they're considered to be suicide rock. Sentenced split up in 2005 after a farewell album called "The Funeral Album" and an extensive farewell tour. At their last gig in their hometown of Oulu, the band even played some of their second death metal album North From Here with Taneli Jarva doing guest vocals. The Sentenced logo was originally made by Taneli Jarva.

Additional notes
A side project band started by Chris Barnes and Allen West of Obituary fame. Originally, the band was intended to just be a side thing, but Chris Barnes decided to persue the idea of having a groove-laiden death metal band that just wasn't about blast beats and speed. In due time, because Chris was making Six Feet Under a priority band, his original band Cannibal Corpse asked him to leave the band because he never made time to practice with them and he focused way more on Six Feet Under than Cannibal Corpse. Guest appearances through various Six Feet Under albums include Ice-T on True
Carnage's "One Bullet Left" and Karan Crisis of Crisis fame on the True Carnage song "Sick And Twisted." (Many consider this the first death metal duet between a male and female.) World reknowned tattoo artist Paul Booth is known to do most of Six Feet Under's album art.

This is not the Skid Row that was an Irish blues rock band. The band's "also known as" name Nirvana has never been popularized and is not to be confused with the popular grunge band of the same name, which featured a famous young singer Kurt Cobain who died in 1994. Skid Row was started by bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave "The Snake" Sabo, who was a big fan of Kiss (yes, the band) and also a former member of of the popular hard rock band Bon Jovi, but never appeared on their albums. Additional notes
The word Therion is Greek for ``wild beast``. Back in the year 1987, Christofer Johnsson did form the metal band Blitzkrieg in Upplands Vsby, a suburb of Stockholms. What genre they played is discussed, as their influences mostly were major thrash bands but they sounded more like the big extreme bands of that era. He played the bass and sung the vocals. The line-up was completed with Peter Hansson on guitar and Oskar Forss on drums. This line-up however, only lasted for two gigs, and they decided [...] [read more]

Additional notes
Rob Zombie was a big fan of horror films and named the band White Zombie in reference to the film "White Zombie" released in 1933 which starred Bela Lugosi. Ivan DePrume became a producer and studio owner. The band briefly reformed in July 2006 for a guest appearence on Vans Warped Tour, but at the moment, it is not known if White Zombie will stay reunited full-time. Despite rumors to the contrary, John Ricci of Exciter (Can) did not play with White Zombie in the late 1980s.
