[Editors note: The following letter was addressed to unidentified Claremont City Councilmembers with a copy forwarded for publication. KD] Dear Respected Councilmembers: Recently, a sub-committee of the council made an appointment with me through the city clerk. I waited for more than one hour with no contact other than the city clerks advice that the committee was running behind. Two other voters waiting before me were kept sitting for similar times. There is no acceptable excuse for this. I told a member that this was poor time management and the reply was something like we will stay all night if needed. Meaning what? My doctor, dentist, nor lawyer would act in such manner. Your office as councilmembers depends on votes. You do not have mine.

There are alternatives to the neurologically and carcinogenic toxic chemicals Mr. Schwarznegger doesnt believe will damage humans or the environment. The question of toxic pesticide use versus best agricultural and landscape practice is increasingly relevent to human and planetary health. Our choice of pesticides, whether we buy or produce our own fruits and vegetables, makes the difference between health and illness for our neighbors, for health insurance costs, and for our ecosystem in general. However, dollars for Sacramento lobbying are not balanced between environmental needs and corporate profit needs so we need our local papers to help improve the balance through information to the public who cares.

The myth of the self-made man

Dear Editor: Im sorry this is a late submission: knee surgery intervened. In a recent letter, Jay Pocock informs us that he is a businessman who as such has never been given anything. He then uses that as a launching pad to criticize government activities. That is, he starts from his version of the Myth of the Self-Made man, a staple

of right-wing thought: whatever Ive accomplished in this world is entirely due to me. The myth continues: government only gets in the way of my accomplishing even more. The interesting question has nothing to do with being given something, rather it is a question about what government provides for the conduct of business. Since there are many businesses of many sorts, I cannot address Mr. Pococks specific circumstances. But just think about some government contributions to business success in such a place as the Village. There are streets and sidewalks and lights of various sorts. There is mail delivery, there is water and sewage. Prospective employees have been educated. There is police and fire protection. There is a banking system, private to be sure, but government regulated to make sure it functions for the benefit of everyone. Contracts are legally enforced. Those of course are some basics. It would be instructive some time to develop a more comprehensive description of the way that government makes the conduct of business successful. While the right prefers the Marlboro man myth, the left notices that our projects, whether business ones or not, are enabled to flourish by being located in a web of relationships with some important parts of that web constituted by government. Political analysis should start from that recognition.

Claremonter pleads guilty to bankruptcy fraud scheme

Claremont woman pleaded guilty last week to one count of bankruptcy fraud in a foreclosure rescue scheme case that involved $725 million in mortgages, according to federal prosecutors.
Robin Phillips, 53, of Claremont, admitted to filing bankruptcies that delayed foreclosure on nearly 500 properties and affected more than $200 million of delinquent mortgages. Ms. Phillips and 2 co-conspirators were charged in federal court for their roles in the scam that promised owners of hundreds of distressed properties that they could indefinitely postpone foreclosure sales. Once a homeowner paid a fee, typically $1,500 per month, the co-conspirators had the homeowner sign a deed granting a one-eighth interest in the house to a fictitious person, according to court documents. Without the knowledge of the homeowner, they filed a bankruptcy petition in the name of the fictitious person. Armed with the fraudulent bankruptcy petition and the deed in the name of the fictitious person, they contacted the mortgage lender to stop foreclosure proceedings. Because the filing of a bankruptcy gives rise to an automatic stay that protects a debtors property, the filings of the fictitious bankruptcy petitions forced lenders to cancel foreclosure sales and wait for the bankruptcy petitions to be dismissed. The lenders, small businesses, as well as large banks, had to pay

lawyers to file motions to dismiss the bankruptcies in order to move forward to collect money that was owed to them. As a result of the scheme, which continued through July, numerous lenders lost interest payments on the mortgages for up to 3 years, while to trio collected nearly $550,000 in fees from homeowners. Irving Cohen, 74, and Darwin Bowman, 74, both of Van Nuys were also charged in connection with the crime. According to prosecutors, Mr. Cohen allegedly started the scheme in late 2006. In 2007, he recruited Mr. Bowman to join the scheme, which Bowman allegedly ran for a period in 2008 while Mr. Cohen was serving a jail sentence for a fraud conviction in state court. Ms. Phillips became involved in the scheme in 2008 after paying for foreclosure-avoidance services from Mr. Cohen and offering assistance in exchange for the waiver of a monthly fee. The scheme was shut down on July 28 when special agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation executed a series of search warrants. In the wake of the housing crisis, foreclosure-rescue schemes have exploded in popularity, particularly in southern California, where both homeowners and lenders have been victims of various frauds, said United States Attorney Andr Birotte Jr., in a federal court news release. Homeowners facing foreclosure need to exercise extreme caution when seeking assistance with their financial problems. Mr. Cohen will make his initial appearance in

United States District Court on December 20 while Mr. Bowman is currently scheduled to go on trial on February 8. Ms. Phillips is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge John F. Walter on April 4. The crime of bankruptcy fraud carries a statutory maximum sentence of 5 years in federal prison. The cases against the co-conspirators are the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the assistant from the United States Trustees Office.

Lieberman named University of La Vernes 18th president

Commission member, lawyer disbarred for mishandling clients funds

he State Bar of California has disbarred an area lawyer who currently serves on the citys Community Services Commission.
Stacey Annette Matranga, 43, a Claremont resident with her law office based in Ontario, was cited for 17 acts of misconduct leading to her disbarment. The action took effect October 28. According to the State Bar Court of Californias recently published decision, the transgressions spanned interactions with 7 separate clients. In one case, Ms. Matranga allegedly misappropriated over $21,000 of a clients funds during a 5month period in 2006. A total of $30,000 was given to her by a client to be maintained in a trust account, where the accounts balance was to remain at $30,000. But according to the decision, at one point, the balance on the account fell below $9,000. She knew or should have known that the balance was dipping below $30,000, particularly since she had written at least 15 checks totaling $20,700 payable to her office during this period, State Bar Court Judge Richard Honn wrote in the decision. Thus, [Ms. Matranga] committed an act of moral turpitude. In other cases, Ms. Matranga did not return advanced, unearned fees of $3,200, $2,840 and $299 to separate clients. Only after a client obtained an arbitration award against her did the commissioner return the $2,840 unearned fee to one of the clients. She also failed to communicate promptly with clients, did not provide appropriate accounting to clients, failed to obey court orders, failed to cooperate with state bar investigations and did not perform legal services with competence, the decision reads. [Her] misconduct significantly harmed a client,

the public or the administration of justice, the decision goes on to say. [She] has yet to return all the client papers, file, unearned fees and client funds. She still has not obeyed a court order, instructing her to pay $10,000 to the opposing party attorney fees. Ms. Matranga was admitted to the practice of law in the state of California in 1999. Since that time, she has been an attorney at law and a member of the State Bar of California. Aside from losing her ability to practice, the court recommended Ms. Matranga pay $3,200 plus interest in restitution to one former client and $1,799 plus interest to another. A telephone message seeking comment left at Ms. Matrangas Ontario office was not returned. There are various levels of disciplinary action taken by the state bar against members including private or public reproval, probation, suspension and disbarment, said Diane Curtis, Public Information Officer for the State Bar. Disbarment is the most severe action that can be taken. Someone who is disbarred may apply for reinstatement with the State Bar after 5 years unless they get credit for an interim suspension, Ms. Curtis said. In order to be readmitted, the former member must demonstrate rehabilitation and present moral qualifications, as well as present learning and ability in the law. The Community Services Commission advises the city council on matters of maintenance of city property. The commission makes recommendations on development, improvement, and maintenance of city parks, buildings, sanitation, streets, and street trees. There are currently 7 commissioners on the Community Services Commission. Ms. Matrangas term as a commissioner runs through 2011.

Tree lighting puts Claremont in the holiday spirit

hrongs of residents made their way to the Village on Friday night to celebrate Claremont's welcoming of the holiday season.

At the Claremont Depot, the crowds gathered to watch the annual lighting of the tree. The Wonderelles entertained the crowd with holiday songs, and city council members made their welcoming speeches. Then 2 children were chosen from the crowd to light the tree. More singing followed before Claremont got a special visit from Christmas favorite fat man, Santa Claus. Arriving in a patrol car, Mr. and Ms. Claus greeted the audience and headed down to city hall to pose for photos along with a sleigh and real reindeer. There was more entertainment for the crowds at the city's first ever ice skating rink. Located in the parking lot at Indian Hill Boulevard and Second Street, the rink featured synthetic ice made of a polymer compound sprayed with a glide enhancer to improve mobility. It was packed with skaters throughout the day and well into the night. Sponsored by the Village Marketing Group, organizers said theyd like to make ice-skating a regular part of the holiday event in the coming years. All she could talk about today was going ice skating, said Brian Teuber, while watching his 8-year-old daughter Faith glide around the rink. She was so excited. Over 30 merchants participated as Cheer Stops this year through the Village. Many businesses stayed open late into the night to take advantage of the heavy foot traffic. I probably wont close until 11 oclock tonight, said Arman Ariane, owner of Susa on Indian Hill Boulevard. Throughout the evening, the Village was alive with

Yin, Yang and a glass of wine

by John Watkins

n Monday of last week, I sponsored a wine event at Packing House Wine Merchants in an effort to get as many people from the No on CL group and the Yes on CL group together to get together and talk in a neutral venue (with a little booze to grease the skids).

view point
50 people filling up Sals fabulous wine shop and staying for pretty much the full three hours. Attendees included Terry Nichols (CUSD Superintendent), Hilary LaConte, Sam Pedroza, Corey Calaycay, Bill Fox, Jeff Hammill and Jay Pocock to mention only a few. People who had very strong feelings and in some cases, strong words, spent hours together enjoying fine wine and good company as well as discussing CUSDs looming financial crisis. There were conversations all around about thoughts and ideas of what we can do as a community to help CUSDs budget issues in a way that the entire community will find acceptable. I have always joked that Claremont is a city of 30,000 with the politics of 300,000. During the CL campaign, there was so much back and forth between

My thinking was that with the election past, it is now time to figure out how to get both sides to communicate and work together. The theme for the event was Yin and Yang: Two different approaches to the same problem can both be well intended. Several of us on both sides of the CL issue reached out to our friends, neighbors and school board members in an effort to see who would be willing to come. What we initially thought might be a dozen people stopping by for a quick drink rapidly turned into over

both sides of the issue about who was right and wrong, that it was easy to forget that in reality both sides wanted exactly the same thing, only the approaches to a solution was different. We all want financially healthy, well run schools and well educated children. We need to have a functioning theater and an energy efficient district. The night ended the way it should have, with Bill Fox and Jay Pocock (two people who couldnt be farther apart over Measure CL) being the last two people having a lively (but friendly) discussion about what we should be doing to help CUSD. Thank you Betty, Jay, Bill, Joe & Joe, Terry, Hilary, Sam & Corey (and those I forget to mention) for your help and for showing your support through your attendance. My question to all the attendees: What are you going to do from here? Please continue the conversations you started at the Packing House Wine Merchant and make a difference in the community and with CUSD. And be kind to each other. Federal health care reform: What does it mean?

by Ellen Taylor, President, League of Women Voters of Claremont Area

veryone is unhappy about health care, particularly health care costs, but not everyone realizes that a national health care reform bill is law, or what is in it. Research shows that many Americans dont even know that a reform bill has passed. Start by informing yourself about what isand is notin the bill, and then make it a point to talk to your friends and neighbors.
Some of what is included in the landmark Affordable Care Act: a guarantee that insurance companies can no longer discriminate based on pre-existing conditions an end to lifetime caps a requirement that insurance companies can no longer can drop people when they get sick. In addition, the bill: gives tax credits to small businesses for providing coverage for employees

view point
requires insurers to cover preventive care at no cost. There is misinformation being circulated about the bills effects on Medicare. Dont let the naysayers scare seniors! Medicare is actually being improved and strengthened. The Affordable Care Act attacks waste and fraud. The bill adds benefits for those on Medicare: helps seniors stay in their homes bans discrimination based on pre-existing conditions provides preventive care with no co-pays. Yes, there are taxesbut only for those with incomes over $200,000-$250,000. These taxes will provide for the largest investment in the health care workforce ever made. There is a huge need for primary health care providers, and the Affordable Care

Act will help fill the gap by investing in education and training, and providing incentives for these desperately needed caregivers. Finally, for those who advocate repealing the act: this is an even more costly choice than enacting it! Repealing the act would cost an estimated $455 billion. What about California? California is on the forefront of federal health care reform. This fall, the governor signed two bills creating the California Health Benefit Exchange. Jane G. Sanders
anthropology professor, longtime League of Women Voters member, integration advocate
Shortly after her 100th birthday, Mt. San Antonio Gardens resident Jane Gabbert Sanders died on November 28, 2010. It was really touching that for her 100th birthday, she received close to 100 cards, many from newcomers to the Gardens telling how much she welcomed them into the community, said her son, Ed Sanders. She was a very warm and welcoming person. Born in Oxnard on November 20, 1910 to newspaper publisher John Raymond Gabbert and Elizabeth Gordon Gabbert, Ms. Sanders moved with her family to Riverside at age 2 when her father purchased the Riverside Enterprise. Following education in Riverside public schools and graduation from Riverside Poly High School, Ms. Sanders attended Riverside Junior College, enjoying most of all a course in geology, a foreshadowing of later anthropology pursuits. Studies in anthropology indeed followed at the University of California, Berkeley where Ms. Sanders achieved academic excellence while earning bachelors and masters degrees. At Cal, she was a member of the academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. During graduate school and beyond, Ms. Sanders taught in the classroom, working in this capacity at Oceanside and Riverside Junior Colleges following her time at UC Berkeley. In 1937, she married college educator Edward Sandy Sanders who she had met a few years earlier on an ocean cruise throughout Europe. The cruise, titled a bargain cruise, cost only $202. Even in those times, this offer was beyond belief, Ms. Sanders wrote in Sheltered Gardens, the autobiographical account of her familys California history that she penned in her 80s. Ms. Sanders and her husband came to Claremont in 1942. Almost immediately upon arrival, their home became a dormitory for female Pomona College students who had been displaced when the colleges dorms were taken over by personnel being trained for the US Army and subsequent service in World War II. At the time, Mr. Sanders served as dean of students and admissions at Pomona. Over the course of 10 years, Ms. Sanders and her husband opened their home to more than 50 students, often with as many as 8 living with them at a given time. In addition to teaching a few anthropology courses at Pomona, Ms. Sanders was also affiliated with the institution through membership and leadership within Campus Women, the Rembrandt Club and the Pomona Campus Club. For 4 years, she ran an academic counseling clinic for students of the Claremont Colleges. As a longtime member of the Intercultural Council in Claremont, Ms. Sanders worked hard for many years to help incoming Mexican families acclishe participated in a meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady at the time, and the International Refugee Commission, which resulted in Claremonts assisting displaced persons with housing, employment and life opportunities. This particular impact on peoples lives through Ms. Sanders service with the league represents only one of countless examples of why, in 1994, the National League of Women Voters named her as one of 15 women across the country who have most impacted their city or the larger community during the leagues history. For many years, Ms. Sanders started the day by rising early and enjoying a 6 a.m. swim in the Mt. San Antonio Gardens (MSAG) pool. Although illness slowed her down the last few months, she continued a form of this daily exercise until almost the end of her 100 years. Also at MSAG, Ms. Sanders helped organize Great Discussions meetings during which residents convened to talk about important world affairs. Ms. Sanders delighted in reading voraciously and traveling extensively. Private services were held. Ms. Sanders is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ed and Peg Sanders of Boulder, Colorado and John and Jan Sanders of Compton; her 2 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and by her 101-year-old brother, John Gabbert of Riverside.

mate to life in Claremont and fully integrate into the community. She also focused her efforts on the issue of integration outside of Claremont and California, working with the Delta Project of the American Council of Churches, which was established to help the cause of integration in the Mississippi Delta Region. And, in 1965 at Pomona College, she helped obtain funding for a nationwide integration conference that attracted several hundred students from across the country. It was in the 40s that Ms. Sanders began her long association with the League of Women Voters. As president of the local league shortly after WWII,

Ruth E. Borden
Pilgrim Place resident and retired YWCA leader Ruth Eleanor Borden died on October 4, 2010 in the Pilgrim Place Health Services Center. She was 97. She lived a wonderful, quality life blessed with good health and vitality, shared her niece, Barbara Snitkin. She was so blessed living her senior years in Pilgrim Place, a special community that continues the beautiful work of service to our nation by all members who have lived and worked worldwide being Gods way showers. Born on March 13, 1913 in Tacoma, Washington, the only daughter of Morrill H. Borden and Alice G. Borden, Ms. Borden grew up with her 2 brothers in Tacoma. Following the death of her parents, she moved to California, attended Fullerton Junior College and earned a degree in social science at San Diego State College. Following 2 years of medical social work at San Diego County Hospital, Ms. Borden began her lengthy and influential career with the YWCA, beginning as a member of their USO (United Service Organizations) Division. As World War II came to a close, the YWCA asked Ms. Borden to shift into a new division, which led to serving as program director in Spokane, Washington and then in New Haven, Connecticut. Numerous positions within the YWCA followed, including advisory secretary with the Seoul, Korea YWCA, associate executive director and administrator for the YWCA Job Corps out of Houston, Texas and executive director positions with YWCAs in Jamestown, New York; Montclair, New Jersey; Indianapolis, Indiana;

lifelong YWCA professional, womens advocate, volunteer

Nashville, Tennessee; and Savannah, Georgia. Ruth was a modest woman who lived from her heart. She guidedyoung women to move forward in creating their lives to be all they could be with passion andintegrity. This was a time that was evolving in awareness of women leading fulfilling careers, as well as being housewives and mothers, said Ms. Snitkin. Ruth quietly took a stand for women having this distinction in their lives. During Ms. Bordens era with the YWCA, issues of race and integration both challenged and fueled her work. In New Jersey, she was instrumental in helping the YWCA develop and solidify its Interracial Charter; and, in Georgia, she was called to help resurrect and re-affiliate the YWCA with the World YWCA after it had disaffiliated and dissolved over racial policies. She was loved, respected and admired in her leadership, Ms. Snitkin commented. Of particular importance to Ms. Borden during her years with the YWCA and at Pilgrim Place was her close friendship to lifelong YWCA leader and fellow Pilgrim Betty Genne and her family. They were special, like loving family, to her, said Ms. Snitkin, noting that both Ms. Genne and her husband predeceased Ms. Borden. Even in retirement at Pilgrim Place, Ms. Borden remained involved in the work and advocacy of the YWCA, helping to bring together YWCA world leaders who had settled in California for discussions on important womens and world issues. the organization and served for 3 years as executive director of the Tennessee Mental Health Association (MHA). Beyond her professional service, Ms. Borden also served in many volunteer capacities, including spending 6 years as secretary of the Georgia MHA and the Chatham County MHA; acting as secretary, treasurer, international relations chairperson and editor of the governmental directory for the League of Women Voters (LWV) in Georgia; and also serving on the LWV board of directors as chairperson of the Legal Status of Women during what she once referred to as the years of a losing battle for the ERA. Additionally, Ms. Borden traveled around South Africa, speaking on womens rights in 7 cities. Ms. Borden is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and CDale Borden of Tacoma, Washington; by 4 nieces and nephews, Barbara Snitkin of Houston, Texas, Beverly Lipinski of Manistque, Michigan, Glen Borden of Chesapeake, Virginia and Jack Borden of Tacoma, Washington; and by many great-nieces and greatnephews as well as many great-greatnieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert M. Borden; and by her nephew, Gerald Borden. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, December 8, 2010 in Decker Hall at Pilgrim Place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pilgrim Pace Residents Health and Support Program, 625 Mayflower Rd., Claremont, CA 91711.

Ruth was definitely a leader, and her passion for the YWCA was certainly something she carried through to her final days. She always kept up her interest in the YWCA and was always curious to know what was going on in this country and the world, said fellow Pilgrim Place resident and retired YWCA executive director, Mary Douglas. She was a quiet woman, but I always saw in her the light of her passion for the YWCA. Ms. Douglas laughed about the chief, cook, and bottle-washer roles that she, Ms. Borden and other early executive directors played during the first years of YWCA work. We were executive directors, but we were also involved in fund development, program development, personnel, a little bit of everything, explained Ms. Douglas. Prior to her last post with the YWCA, Ms. Borden took a hiatus from

The joy of the game

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Eleven-year-old Joy Krupa was a stand out member this year of the Junior Pee Wee division of the Claremont Wolfpack Junior All American Football league. Joy led her team in tackles, interceptions and receptions during the recently completed season.

leven-year-old Montclair resident Joy Krupa has just finished fulfilling one of her dreams this fall by playing tackle football for the Claremont Wolfpack Jr. All American Footballs Jr. Pee Wee team. Yet Joy didnt just play, she excelled.
Joy made a spectacular debut in the San Gabriel Valley Jr. All American Football League this past season by leading her team in tackles, receptions and interceptions. The 11-year-old was one of the key reasons her team was the only Claremont squad to advance to the postseason in 2010. I loved my experienceit was really fun, Joy said. I could do it for the rest of my life. It was everything I thought it would be. Leading my team in tackles, interceptions and receptions feels good because I feel like I accomplished something big. Joys parents, Ted and Delores Krupa, gave her the green light to participate in the junior football league this year after noticing her ongoing desire to play tackle football. Joy had participated in basketball, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball and track. But those experiences could not match the passion she had for the gridiron. Shes [Joy] been pretty persistent and when she played flag football, I thought she would get it out of her system, Ms. Krupa said. But after basketball season, she asked to play [tackle] football again. Then I thought, maybe if she ever played tackle football, she would just get it out of her system. Whats interesting was that when we saw a sign for Claremont football, she was the one who called and asked if they accepted girls. Then we did the sign-ups and the rest is history.

sporting life
Joys interest in football came from her brother, Chris Krupa. The 2 would play catch in the backyard when Joy was younger. Seeing how much her older brother enjoyed the sport had a significant impact on her growing desire to compete on the field. Though football features running, throwing and catching, it was the physical part of the game that Joy wanted to experience most. Donning #99, she never shied away from physical contact but embraced it and even initiated it. When I made my first tackle, it felt good, Joy said. It was so exciting and I couldnt wait to line up and do it again. But when I was playing Covina, a guy went for my knees when he was trying to tackle me and he injured me. My knee hurt a lot. Then in a game against West Covina, I had the wind knocked out of me when I went out on a fly pattern and 3 guys came up and knocked me in the stomach. Yet each time she was knocked down, the 11-yearold would get back up. According to Coach Kevin Place, her determination was one way she was able to win over her teammates. Throughout the season, Joy played wide receiver, linebacker and cornerback while helping Claremont to a 6-3-1 record. Her team lost in the first round of the playoffs but the Wolfpack still ended the season on a good note with a 28-0 win over Glendale in the River Bowl in Laughlin, Nevada last Saturday. I think she [Joy] has the potential to be something special, Coach Place said. By looking at her big smile, you would have no idea that she was a terror on the football field. She is the ideal teammate by always

encouraging and helping out her teammates. The team has embraced Joy as one of the boys, and she, without a doubt, was one of the leaders of our team. She, hands down, was the crowd favorite in every game we played. Coach Places coaching style helped to put the Krupas at ease during Joys first season. His style made his players accountable without having to raise his voice. He knew exactly what he wanted and he was able to get it out of the kids without yelling, Mr. Krupa said. It was a great experience. Joy is currently playing basketball and more importantly is continuing to excel academically. The 7th grader is homeschooled through California Virtual Academies and holds a 4.0 GPA. Her sisters, Gabriela and Sabrina, are also students of the same organization. Ms. Krupa said that homeschooling gives her children a greater opportunity to follow their passions and be involved in a variety of activities. My husband and I believed in strengthening their gifts and putting them in everything we could, she said. Then we saw which ones had this strength and that strength and we support that. Joys parents confirmed that she will participate in the junior football league again next year. Even while she goes through the current basketball season, she cant help but think of the upcoming 2011 football season. I think about next year but because I know Im going to play, I dont worry about it that much, Joy said. What I like about football is the excitement of it. It gives you a good release.

Athenas race out to strong season start

ith Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play still a month away, the Claremont-MuddScripps Athenas are making the most of their basketball preseason so far. After a 70-45 smashing of Cal State Maritime last Friday, the Athenas followed up with a similar dismantling of Southwestern (Arizona) on Saturday to close out the CMS-Caltech Classic with a 5-1 record. C-M-S forward Frannie Hemmelgarn recorded her 2nd double-double of the season on Saturday with a 13-point, 11rebound performance. The sophomore from Seattle, Washington is currently leading the Athenas in 3 categories by averaging 14.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest. Taylon Johnson was the leading scorer for C-M-S on Saturday with 21 points off 5-of-9 from the field and 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. As a team, the Athenas shot 44 percent from the field and outrebounded Southwestern by a 49-32 margin. The Athenas jumped out to a 41-13 halftime advantage against Cal State Maritime last Friday en route to its 25point win. Once again, C-M-S outshot (49 percent to 33 percent) and outrebounded (41-30) its opponent. Both Hemmelgarn and Johnson scored 12 points apiece. C-M-S will play the next 4 games at
