Classic Ethernet Modules

4-port Gigabit Ethernet and 12-port 10/100 TX

SmartEdge® Classic Ethernet modules provide service providers with a cost-effective and flexible range of carrier-class Ethernet-
based connectivity choices that enable the construction of efficient and highly-scalable next generation Smart Broadband Networks.
Leveraging the flexible modular design approach of the SmartEdge Multi-Service Edge Router, Classic Ethernet Modules are
supported in any SmartEdge chassis and are compatible with any generation module and route processor for complete trans-
generational interoperability. Service providers can mix modules in the same chassis to achieve a highly-flexible and cost-effective
configuration enabling tailored service delivery.

HIGHLIGHTS PRODUCT OVERVIEW

SmartEdge Classic Ethernet modules are IEEE 802.3 standards-based and deliver

• Distributed processing with no single- interface and density choices. The 12-port 10/100 TX module is an auto-sensing,
point-of-failure and local, wire-speed IP copper-based module that supports both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps connections at
services and forwarding including RIP, wire-speed and offers standard RJ-45-based cable connections. The 4-port Classic

and support for copper 1000Base-T Additionally, flexible queue management with up to 1024 queues is provided along
interfaces with granular rate limiting and policing capabilities. Other advanced services include
authentication of inner and outer VLANs with accounting and statistics, and support
for subscriber-level PPPoE and L2TP management. In addition, these modules
provide robust support for MPLS Martini-draft Private Wire services.
Meeting critical requirements for non-stop operation, SmartEdge interface modules
are hot-swappable and highly resilient with full state and session maintenance
capabilities. Each interface module also supports ASIC-level microcode updates and
in-service, per-subscriber level reconfigurations without requiring system restarts or
impacting active sessions.
