Q.1 N positive real numbers have a product of unity. Their sum must be (1) Divisible by N. (2) Equal to N+1/N (3) at least N (4) a natural number.

Solution: - if the product of N numbers is constant. Their sum is minimum when they are all equal. Therefore , if the product of N positive numbers is 1 . Their sum is minimum when they are all equal i.e. equal to 1 . The minimum value of the sum is N.

Q.2 A straight line passing through the points A(-3, 2) and B(6, 5) intersects the x-axis at the point P. Find the distance PA. (1) 8 units (2) 2_/ 10 units (3) 6 units (4) 5 _/10 units

Solution:- Given A(-3,2) and B(6,5) The slope of the line AB is m = ( Y2 Y1) / ( X2- X1) = { 5 -2 } / 6 (-3) = 3/9 = 1/3 The equation of the line AB is y y1 = m(x x1) i.e. y-2 = 1/3 {x (-3)} i.e. 3y-6 = x+3 = > x 3y +9 =0 Now substituting y =0 in the above equation, we get x-0+9 =0 => x = -9 As the line AB intersect the x axis at P(-9,0). So PA = _/ {-9 (-3)} 2 + (0-2)2 = _/ 36 + 4 = 2_/ 10 Q.3 The length of the shortest side of a scalene triangle is 8 cm and that of its longest side is 20 cm. The length (in cm) of its third side is an integer. Find the number of possibilities for the length of the third side. (1) 5 Solution:Range for third side 20 -8 < m 12 < m < 20 (2) 6 (3) 8 (4) 7

Q 4. In a group of boys and girls, there are three girls. On every friendship day, each of the members of the group would send an email to the others to wish them. On one friendship day, a total of N emails were sent. The total number of emails sent by the boys to other boys was N - 96. Find the number of emails that the girls sent to the boys. Assume that no emails were sent on that day except for wishing. (1) 51 (2) 54 (3) 45 (4) 48

Solution:- Let the number of members in the group be P. Total number of emails sent = P (P-1) Number of boys = P-3 Number of emails sent by the boys to the other boys = (p-3) * (p-4) So N = P (P-1) and N -96 = (P-3)* (P-4) P ( P-1) 96 = (P-3) * (P-4) P = 18 So there are 15 boys . Number of emails sent by the girls to the boys = 3 *15 = 45 Q.5) How many four digit numbers N have the property that the three digit number obtained by removing the leftmost digit is one ninth of N? (A) 5 (B) 6 (C) 7 (D) 8

Solution: - If the number is (a b c d) then, it means a.1000 + b.100 + c.10 +d = 9(b.100 + c.10 + d) => a.1000 = 8(b.100 + c.10 + d) that means if we divide the number (a.1000) by 8 we will get the respective three digit numbers. Now 'a' can take the vales of (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9). If a=1 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =125 If a=2 , the three digit no. will be =2x1000/8 =250 If a=3 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =375 If a=4 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =500 If a=5 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =625 If a=6 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =750 If a=7 , the three digit no. will be =1x1000/8 =875

Q.6) Find the remainder when (3264)7 is divided by (8)10. (1) 0 (2) 2 (3) 3 (4) 5

Solution: First convert given number (3264)7 in base 10 = 3 * 73 + 2 * 72 + 6 * 71 + 4 * 7 0 Now divide given expression by 8 and get the answer { 3 * (-1)3 + 2 (-1)2 + 6 (-1)1 + 4 } / 8 = { (-3) + 2 -6 + 4 } /8

= - 3 (as a remainder) = 5 (positive remainder)

Q.7) A cuboid of dimensions 80 cm 100 cm 160 cm is painted on all faces. The cost of painting was Rs.92. The cuboid is cut into several identical cubes, which are as large as possible. All the unpainted faces of all the small cubes were also painted. What is the cost, in rupees, of painting these unpainted faces of the small cubes? (1) 380 (2) 388 (3) 396 (4) 404

Solution:The edge of each of the small cubes is 20. There are 4 *5*8 or 160 small cubes The total surface area of these cubes is 160 * 6 * 400 = 3,84,000 The total surface area of the big cuboid is 2 * {80 *100 + 80 * 160 + 100 *60} = 73,600 The exposed area is 310400 To paint an area of 73600, the cost is Rs. 92 So to paint an area of 310400, it is {(310400) / 73600} * 92 = Rs. 388

Q.8) In a film shooting, a man is running towards a vertical mirror with a speed of 10 m/s along a line which is perpendicular to the plane of the mirror. The mirror is also moving towards the man with a speed of 6 m/s along the same line. Find the speed of the man's image in the mirror with respect to the man. (The image of the man forms on the other side of the mirror such that the distance between the image of the man and the mirror is equal to the distance between the man and the mirror.) (1) 16 m/s (2) 22 m/s (3) 26 m/s (4) 32 m/s

Solution:- One second before the man meets the mirror, He is 10 + 6 = 16 m from it. Hence , the image of the man is also 16 m from the mirror . One second later the man meets the mirror and hence his image also would, by then , meet the mirror. Hence , in that second , the man image covered 32 m w.r.t the man . relative speed = 32 m/s.

Q.9) A, B and C have some coins among themselves. A gives to each of B and C one-third of what each of them already has. Then B does the same, i.e., he gives to each of A and C one-third of what each of them already has, after which, C also does the same. If all of them now have the same number of coins, what was the ratio of the initial number of coins with A, B and C respectively? (1) 25 : 21 : 18 (2) 18 : 21 : 25 (3) 3 : 7 : 6 (4) 6 : 7 : 3

Solution:- If A gives to B one third of what B has. The quantity (or number) with B gets multiplied by 4/3 or the initial quantity is of the final. As the transaction takes place twice for each person and since the final number with all is the same. It will be convenient to take the final number as 64. (16 will lead to fractional values). We can tabulate the number of coins with A, B, C at the 4 stages . we start at the bottom and work upward A INTIAL After A gives After B gives After C gives 75 36 48 64 B 63 84 48 64 C 54 72 96 64

The ratio of the number of coins with A, B, C at the beginning is 75:63:54 = 25:21:18

Solution :-

Let the midpoint of PQ be U. Angle PTU = 60o /2 = 30o Triangle PTU is 30o, 60o, 90o triangle So TU = _/3 PU = (8_/3) /2 = 4 _/3 cm. OU = 4 cm OT2 = UT2 - OU2 = (4 _/3)2 - 42 = > OT = 4_/2 cm . Q.11 There is a square field with three cows tethered at three different corners of the field. The ropes, used to tether the cows, are all of length if the area of the square field is 784 m2, what is the area of the field that cannot be accessed by any of the three cows? (Assume = 22/7) (1) 184 m2 (2) 168 m2 (3) 161 m2 (4) 84 m2

Solution: - Let the cows be tethered at A, B and C. Each side is 28 m. The length of each rope is 14_/2 Now the shaded area is left ungrazed. = {area of square 2(area of quadrant covered by each cow)}

= {282 2 ( =1/2 (784 - 616) = 84 Sq. m

) (14 _/2)2}

Q.12 Nine boxes are numbered 1, 2, 9. Each box must be filled with a ball which is of one of the three colours white, black and yellow. Boxes which are filled with either a white ball or a black ball must have consecutive numbers. At least 6 boxes must be filled with a yellow ball. Find the number of ways in which the boxes can be filled. (1) 83 (2) 107 (3) 93 (4) 97

Solution :- We consider the following possibilities. a) 6 boxes are filled with a yellow ball. In this case, each of 3 boxes must be filled with a white oor a black ball. These boxes can be chosen in 7 ways and can be filled in 23 ways So total no of ways = 7 * 8 = 56 b) 7 boxes are filled with a yellow ball. In this case , each of 2 boxes must be filled with a white or a black ball. These boxes can be chosen in 8 ways and can be filed in 2 *2 ways i.e. 4 ways for each chosen way. So total no ways = 8*4 = 32 ways c) 8 boxes are filled with a yellow ball. In this case 1 box must be filled with either a white ball or a black ball. This box can be chosen in 9 ways and can be filled in 2 ways so total no of ways = 18 d) 9 boxes must be filled with a yellow ball in this case there is only 1 way of filling possible. Total no of ways of filling = 56 + 32 + 18 + 1 = 107 Q.13 The pth and the (p + 3)th term of an arithmetic progression are in the ratio p : p + 3. The sum of the first 3p terms of the arithmetic progression and the sum of its first 4p terms are in the ratio 61 : 108. Find the value of p. (1) 10 (2) 15 (3) 18 (4) 20

Solution :- let the first term and the common ratio of the arithmetic progression be a and d respectively . given { a + (p-1)d } / { a+(p+2)d } = p / ( p + 3 ) Pa + 3a + d * ( p-1 )* (p+3) = pa + d*p(p+2)

3a =3d a =d

also given (3p/2){2d + (3p-1)d} / (4p/2) {2d + (4p 1)d} = 61 /108 3(3p+1) / 4 (4p+1) = 61 / 108 P =20 Q.14 A tap takes 8 seconds to fill a jar and 6 minutes to fill a drum. Ram has to fill the drum with the jar. First he fills the jar and then brings it to the drum and pours the water into the drum and immediately returns to the tap and so on. The time Ram takes to travel from the tap to the drum, or vice versa, is 10 seconds. Unfortunately, Ram discovers that the jar has developed a leak, which can empty the full jar in 40 seconds. If at t = 0, Ram starts with an empty faulty jar at the tap, then the minimum time by when Ram can fill the drum is at t = (1) 30 minutes. (3) 28 minutes. (2) 18 minutes. (4) 29 minutes and 50 seconds

Solution :- to minimize the total time taken , the jar must be filled to the brim each time it is used to transfer water from the tap to the drum . Now as the leak takes 5 times as much time to empty the jar as the tap takes to fill the jar The filing rate = 5 the empty rate of leak net rate = 4/5 times rate of the tap. So actual time taken to fill the jar = 5/4 (8) = 10 seconds Now each cycle of operation will take 30 seconds But during carrying 10/40 or of the jar is emptied by the leak Hence in every 30 seconds, only th of the jar is poured in to the drum Now the volume of the drum = { 6 minutes / 8 seconds } * volume of the jar = 45 time the volume of the jar now number of cycle required = 45 / (3/4 ) = 60 So total time = 60 * 30 seconds = 30 minutes but after the drum is filled completely there is no need to come back at tap Required time 30 minutes - 10 seconds = 29 minutes 50 seconds Q.15 The perimeters of a circle, a regular hexagon and a rectangle are equal. If the areas of the circle, the regular hexagon and the rectangle are denoted by C, H and R, which of the following holds true? (1) C > H > R (2) R > H > C (3) C > R > H (4) H > R > C

Solution :- Let p units be the perimeter of the circle , the hexagon and the rectangle So C = { p / (2 ) }2 = p2 / 4

H = 6 * (_/3/4) (p/6)2 = _/3 p2 /24 = p2 /8 _/3 So C > H The area of rectangle will be maximum possible, if it is a square So R = (p/4)2 = p2 /16 As H > R So C > H > R Q.16 A and B are two points on a co-ordinate plane. All the points, in the same plane as A and B, whose distance from B is twice that from A lie on (a) a straight line intersecting AB at a point O such that 2AO = BO. (b) a circle with centre at a point O on AB such that AO = 2BO. (c) a circle with centre at a point O on AB extended such that 4AO = BO. (d) None of these. Solution: - Let the co-ordinates of A and B be (0,0) and (a,0) respectively. Let the co-ordinates of point C be (h, k). Given: 2AC = BC 2 _/ h2 + k2 = _/ (h-a)2 + k2 4(h2 + k2) = (h-a)2 + k2 4h2 + 4k2 = h2 + a2 -2ah + k2 h 2 + K2 + (2/3) ah (2/3) a2 = 0 ( h a/3 )2 + k2 = (2a/3)2

The equation written above is that of a circle with centre at ( -a/3, 0 ) and radius 2a /3 . The centre 0 ( -a/3, 0 ) divide AB externally such that 4 AO = BO. Q.17 Three boys A, B and C start running at constant speeds from the same point P along the circumference of a circular track. The speeds of A, B and C are in the ratio 5:1:1. A and B run clockwise while C runs in the anticlockwise direction. Each time A meets B or C on the track he gives them a card. What is the difference in the number of cards received by B and C if A distributes 33 cards in all? (a) 3 (b) 7 (c) 5 (d) 11

Solution:- Let the speed of A, B and C be 5v, v and v respectively. Let the circumference of the track be 12vt. Instance when A meets: B 3t, 6t, 9t, 12t, 15t, 18t .... C 2t, 4t, 6t, 8t, 10t, 12t .... In every 6t units of time A meets B twice while A meets C thrice. So in 36t A would give: B 2 6 = 12 cards C 3 6 = 18 cards. (total 30) Now, at 38t A gives C a card (his 31st) at 39t A gives B a card (his 32nd) and at 40t A gives C a card (his last) So the required difference = (18 + 2) (12 + 1) = 7. Q.18 The cost price of four articles A, B, C and D are a, b, c and d respectively. A, B, C and D are
sold at profits of 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% respectively. If the net profit on the sale of these four articles is 25%, a, b, c and d cannot be in the ratio (a) 4 : 1 : 4 : 3 (b) 1 : 2 : 2 : 1 (c) 2 : 3 : 6 : 1 (d) 5 : 2 : 7 : 3

Solution: - As per the information given in the question, we can conclude that {0.1a + 0.2b + 0.3c + 0.4d} / {a+ b + c + d} = 0.25 The ratio 5: 2:7: 3 does not satisfy the given condition

Q.19 f(x) = x2 + b x + c The equation f(x) = 0 has two distinct roots which are from the set { 3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3}. How many different expressions of f(x) are possible such that f(0) is non-negative? (a) 3 (b) 6 (c) 12 (d) Infinite

Solution: - If f (0) is non-negative, roots of f(x) = 0 cannot be of opposite signs. So the possibilities for the two roots are (0, 3), (0, 2), (0, 1), (1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 3), (0, 3), (0, 2), (0, 1), (1,2), (1, 3) and (2, 3). Hence the required answer is 12.

Q.20 from a solution that has milk and water in the ratio 5: 3, x percent is removed and replaced with water. The concentration of milk in the resulting solution lies between 30% and 50%. Which of the following best describes the value of x? (a) 25 < x < 50 (b) 20 < x < 52 (c) 20 < x < 48 (d) 25 < x < 60

Solution: - Let the quantity of total solution be 800 units. So, quantity of milk is 500 units and water is 300 units. Now x percent of 800 = 8x units mixture is removed. The quantity (in units) of milk and water removed is 5x and 3x respectively. Final concentration of milk (in percentage) is: { ( 500 5x ) / 800 } * 100 so 30 < ( 500 5x ) / 8 < 50 240 < 500 5x < 400 20 < x < 52
