1. Identify
a. Henry VIII
i. King of England that was given the nickname “Defender of the
Faith” by the Pope. He made the Act of Supremacy made him the
supreme head on Earth of the Church of England. Many Catholics
refused to accept this act and were executed. In the process, Thomas
Moore was also executed.
b. Elizabeth I
i. The Queen of England. Her policies were a compromise between
Protestant and Catholic practices. In the end, she made an England a
firmly Protestant nation.
c. Council of Trent
i. The Council that was called to establish the direction that reform
should take. It said salvation comes through faith and good works,
and that the Bible is not the only source of religious truth. Also it
took many steps to stop the many abuses of the Church.
d. Inquisition
i. What the Pope strengthened the deal with the Protestant threat more
directly. The Inquisition used torture and execution to root out
heresy. It also prepared the Index of Forbidden Books, a list of
works considered to immoral or irreligious for Catholics to read.
e. Jesuits
i. The Society of Jesus. It was founded by Ignatius of Loyola. Jesuits
became advisers to Catholic rulers to help combat heresy in their
lands.
f. Teresa of Avila
i. The person that symbolized this renewal feeling of intense faith. She
ate and slept very little and dedicated herself to prayer and
meditation. Her mystical writings rank among the most important
Christian texts of her time.

i. A settlement of a dispute in which two or more sides agree to accept
less than they originally wanted

i. Any segregated mode of living or working that results from bias or


stereotyping
3. Why were the Anabaptists considered radical?
a. They tried to achieve what they wanted through force and violence. Even
Luther himself disapproved of this and joined the Catholics to suppress the
Anabaptists.
4. Describe the steps in which England became a protestant country.
a. The king wished to get a divorce and the Catholic church wouldn't let him
so he broke away. He killed many Catholics that refused to accept the Act
of Supremacy, and were executed. Many disagreed with by and broke away.
5. What were the goals of the Catholic Reformation?
a. The goal was to return the Catholic Church back to what it was, and take
out all the corruption that polluted the Church.
6. If the Catholic Church had undertaken reform earlier, do you think that the
Protestant Reformation would have occurred? Explain.
a. Maybe not, because it was recently that the church heavily abused things
like indulgences. As time went one, the Church became more corrupt, so if
reform began earlier, a lot of problem might have not arisen yet.
