EFFICIENT COOKSTOVES, KILNS AND THE SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY OF WOOD BIOMASS ENERGY THROUGH COMMUNITY FORESTRY AND COMMUNITY

PROTECTED AREA WOODLOTS

OBJECTIVES

SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT

The general objective is to contribute to environmental sustainability in Cambodia by strengthening sustainable forest management practices, quantifying potential green house gas emission reductions and promoting carbon finance opportunities in bio-energy markets. The specific objectives are: To increase institutional capacity in wood energy supply and demand, To increase adoption of energy efficient charcoal kilns, To promote Community Forestry / Community Protected Area woodlots as a sustainable source of woody biomass energy, To enable rural households to improve their livelihoods through access to improved cookstoves. Rural households, village communities and their extended networks for wood biomass energy supply in the provinces of Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, and Battambang. Agri-business entrepreneurs and rural development researchers studying sustainable biomass energy supply and demand. Officials of policy-making institutions at both the national and sub-national levels with responsibility for sustainable wood biomass energy development.

BACKGROUND
Approximately 13.5 million people in the rural areas of Cambodia depend on fuelwood as energy for their daily cooking needs. It is expected that the use of wood biomass energy resources will continue to increase into the future. These current practices, in addition to ongoing land conversion and timber extraction, will have devastating impacts on deforestation in Cambodia. The Sustainable Forest Management project will be implemented by the Forestry Administration of the Royal Government of Cambodia and financed by UNDP. Project activities will have a three year timeframe from April 2012 to February 2015 and will focus on four provinces within the Cardamom Mountain Complex, namely Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat and Battambang. GERES Cambodia has been contracted by the Forestry Administration to provide technical inputs for institutional and communal capacity-building, knowledge management and skills development in the use of community woodlots, improved cookstoves, charcoal kilns and stove production centers, towards the achievement of the project objectives.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Sustainable supply of solid biomass 5 Community Forestry woodlot management plans developed using participatory processes. Baseline established on forest condition and woody biomass supply potential in the 4 target provinces. Robust monitoring system is in place and functioning. biomass fuel technology

Improved solid dissemination

16 additional efficient charcoal kilns installed. Baseline with local level indicators established. Database for carbon project monitoring stores information on quantity of sustainably produced charcoal from energy efficient kilns. 20 rural communities have replaced traditional cooking methods and are incorporated within the supply chain of Improved Charcoal Stoves.

Capacity-building and policy development regarding wood energy supply and demand Wood Energy Working Group established and functioning. Training programmes, including rural enterprise development, based on needs assessment. Increased local awareness on sustainable charcoal production.
