Attention: Mr. Dane Doleman, P.Eng.
Dear Sirs,
Re: Burrard Bridge - Close-up Visual nspection of Sliding Bearing Areas
1. Introduction
During the Detailed nspection and Condition Assessment of the approach bearings
carried out on 2010 November 23 and 24, Buckland and Taylor Ltd. (B&T) noted that it
was difficult to closely examine the sliding bearings at the South Abutment and Bent 4 due
to the accumulation of debris caused by leakage through the deck joints (see B&T report
No. 1939-RPT-GEN-001-0A). Therefore, the City of Vancouver (CoV) sent out crews to
clean these areas to permit B&T to complete the close-up visual inspection of the sliding
bearings. This letter report summarizes the findings of the follow-up inspection of the
sliding bearings.
The scope of this inspection is limited to:
i. Confirm the inspection findings from the B&T inspection of 2010 November, and
conduct a close-up visual inspection to review the condition of the sliding bearings and
the structural components (girder ends, diaphragms and corbels) adjacent to the
sliding bearings;
ii. Establish whether the sliding bearings and/or adjacent components require
rehabilitation; and
iii. Prepare a letter report detailing the findings, identifying deficiencies and propose
possible remedial repairs.
The inspection was visual with limited chipping and hammer sounding of concrete. Crack
widths were measured as deemed appropriate.
The inspection was conducted on 2011 January 11 and 12 by Murray Johnson, P.Eng.,
Andrew Griezic, P.Eng., and Ki Kim, P.Eng., of B&T supported by City staff.
