PRINCIPLES OF ECONOMICS Assessment 2 - Portfolio/ Report ( 50% weighting)

This is an individual assessment carrying 50 % weighting towards your final grade. The assessment has two elements: a. Maintaining a scrap book/portfolio on the current developments in a selected area/areas of Omans macro economy (50% weighting). b. Writing a report on the same of about 700 to 1000 words (50% weighting). Task Details: Diversification of income sources has always been a major worry for all GCC member countries, but since the oil crisis of the eighties the importance of this macro economics issue has increased manifolds. Oman has noticeably engaged in developing a number of income sources other than oil such as tourism, agriculture and fisheries, mining, animal wealth...etc. a. The student is expected to choose any two areas of economic development that are targeted by the Omani government as alternative sources of income. The student is required to maintain a Portfolio/Scrap Book consisting of news paper / magazine articles / internet sources or any other information from secondary sources to highlight the efforts of

the Omani Government to develop and enhance the contribution of his/ her two selected areas to Omans economic growth.

b. The student is also required to submit a short written report of around 700 to 1000 words, summarizing his/her findings on the current economic developments in Oman in the two selected areas and relate the findings to his/her knowledge of macroeconomic concepts.

General Guidelines for the Assignment: You are expected to maintain and submit a Portfolio/Scrap Book consisting of news paper / magazine articles/ internet resources or any other information from secondary sources to highlight the efforts made by the Omani Government in developing the two areas selected by you to research the issue of income diversification in Oman. You are allowed to collect articles from any secondary sources such as newspapers, magazines, published reports, internet sourcesetc. You are required to collect at least 30 articles for the portfolio task (15 articles for each area). The articles should be from the latest news papers/magazines/internet sources (February to June 2013) Please note that it is the relevance and quality of the articles collected that will help you in getting higher grades and not the number of articles. You are basically required to collect information related to Omans economy. Other economies information may be used for comparison purposes ( comparing other countries information with that of Oman). Source and date of each article should be provided 4 Majan College (University College)

The student is also required to submit a short written report of around 700 to 1000 words, summarizing their findings on the current economic developments in Oman in the two selected areas based on the articles collected and related to students knowledge of macro economics. Emphasis is on quality rather than quantity . Students are expected to focus on relevant news and to be able to relate their real findings to the economic concepts they learnt.
