The SOTAS system consists of a Central Switching Unit with Crew Boxes attached in a star configuration The star configuration is a robust solution for hostile environments, and is highly resilient to battle damage. Coaxial cabling distributes both power and data between the Central Switching Units and Crew Boxes enabling efficient use of space. Robust digital data link is designed for slip ring routing, using a modulation method that is virtually immune to noise. Simple, lightweight, flexible coaxial system cabling supports field repair without special tools

SOTAS is a modular system with a scalable number of audio and data access interfaces. Configurable Central Switching Units use the same software, have a common hardware core, and share several optional building blocks enabling easy customization both for current vehicle configurations and emerging requirements. All Crew Boxes share common modules and flexible interfaces while maintaining a simple user interface.
12
SOTAS has been designed from the outset as a highly scalable system. With a family of configurable system building blocks and programmable interfaces, SOTAS can be scaled to provide solutions for all types of installations and operational requirements. The SOTAS family of equipment is scalable through daisychained switches to a virtually limitless number of peripheral interfaces (headsets and radios).
13
Field Telephone
SOTAS is a software defined open system that uses common open standards. SOTAS is fully software upgradeable for e.g. Human-Machine Interfaces, applications, network communication stacks, device drivers, codecs and voice processing capabilities.

Figure 1 illustrates the connectivity graphs of a VHF and WLAN network The relative bandwidth is indicated by the thickness of the edges. Figure 2 shows how a multiband enabled router network could exploit the low bandwidth high range VHF network (link u2 and u3) to glue together the WLAN islands of Figure 1.

In this case one VHF-link (link u1) is also preferred over 3 WLAN hops. The VHFlinks that can be covered by WLAN are not used.
