THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY
The Naval Institute Guide to the U.S. Navys
Greatest Victory
Edited by Thomas C. Hone
The best way for todays sailors to learn about a battle is
from those who fought it. The Battle of Midway, com-
memorated annually in the U.S. Navy, warrants close at-
tention. This Naval Institute guide includes some of the
most vibrant and informed accounts by individuals who
fought on both sides of the June 1942 battle. The anthol-
ogy pulls together memoirs, articles, excerpts from other
Naval Institute books, and relevant government docu-
ments to help readers understand what happened and
explain why the battle was so signifcant to the naval
service. The core of the book focuses on events leading
up to the battle and the battle itself, with a separate sec-
tion examining how others have interpreted the battles
often desperate engagements.
When the U.S. Navy stopped the Japanese steamroller
off Midway Island, it not only turned the progress of
the war but set the Navys foundation for future coun-
ter offensives. The Navys comeback spread led to the
Solomon Islands and on to the other key strategic areas
in the Pacifc. While many know that Midway was a
crucial american victory, they often do not know the de-
tails of the battle. This book tells how, for example, the
american PT boats contributed to the victory, how the
carrier planes formed up for their attacks, and what role
radar played in the battle. In addition to excerpts from
books and articles, the guide includes selections from
several important Naval Institute oral histories. From the
enlisted mans perspective all the way to the admirals,
for both americans and Japanese, readers see the U.S.
Navys greatest victory as the participants saw it.
Thomas C. Hone is a former senior executive in the
offce of the Secretary of defense and a former mem-
ber of the faculty of the Naval War College with a Phd

coauthor of three books on naval administration and
innovation, the coauthor of a book on the Navy between
the world wars, and an award-winning author of articles
and essays on naval and military affairs. He resides in

THE MARINES TAkE ANBAR
The Four Year Fight Against al Qaeda
By Richard H. Shultz Jr.
A Leatherneck Original
The Marines campaign to secure Anbar Province
in Iraq will rank as one of the Corps historic battle
achievements. Dick Shultzs brilliant account of that
campaign is rich in lessons learned and examples of
adaptability. The Marines Take anbar will be a
classic study in counter insurgency.
Gen. Anthony C. Zinni, USMC (Ret.)
The U.S. Marine Corps four-year campaign against al
Qaeda in anbar is a fght certain to take its place next to
such legendary clashes as Belleau Wood, guadalcanal,
Peleliu, Iwo Jima, okinawa, Chosin, and Khe Sanh. Its
success, the author contends, constituted a major turn-
ing point in the Iraq War and helped alter the course of
events and set the stage for the Surge in Baghdad a year
later. This book brings to light all the decisive details
of how the Marines, between 2004 and 2008, adapted
and improvised as they applied the hard lessons of past
mistakes.
In March 2004, when part of the 1st Marine expedition-
ary Force (I MeF) was deployed to anbar Province
in the heart of the Sunni triangle, the Marines quickly
found themselves locked in a bloody test of wills with
al Qaeda, and a burgeoning violent insurgency. By
the spring of 2006, according to all accounts, enemy
violence was skyrocketing, while predictions for any
U.S. success were plummeting. But at that same time
new counterinsurgency initiatives were put in place
when I MeF returned for its second tour in anbar, and
the Marines began to gain control. By September 2008
the fght was over. richard Shultz, a well-known author
and international security studies expert, has thoroughly
researched this subject. His book effectively argues the
case for the Marines changing the course of the war at
anbar, which is contrary to the conventional wisdom
that the Surge was the turning point.
Richard H. Shultz, Jr., is professor of international
politics at the Fletcher School, Tufts University, where
he directs the International Security Studies Program.
He also is director of research at the National Strategy
Information Center in Washington, dC. His many books
include the widely reviewed Insurgents, Terrorists, and
Militias and The Secret War against Hanoi. He lives in
Medford, Ma.

THE CHIEF CULPRIT
Stalins Grand Design to Start World War II
By Viktor Suvorov
A remarkable book. A delayed bombshell that includes
very pertinent new research and discoveries Suvorov has
made since 1990. He makes savvy readers of contem-
porary and World War II history, of a mind to reexamine
the Soviet past in terms of what historians call pres-
ent interest. None of the new Russian historians can
match his masterful sweep of research and analysis.
Albert Weeks, Professor Emeritus of International
Relations, New York University, author of Stalins other
War: Soviet grand Strategy, 19391941
In The Chief Culprit, bestselling author Viktor Suvorov
probes newly released Soviet documents and reevaluates
existing historical material to analyze Stalins strate-
gic design to conquer europe and the reasons behind
his controversial support for Nazi germany. a former
Soviet army intelligence offcer, the author explains
that Stalins strategy leading up to World War II grew
from lenins belief that if World War I did not ignite the
worldwide Communist revolution, then a second world
war would be necessary.
Suvorov debunks the theory that Stalin was duped by
Hitler and that the Soviet Union was a victim of Nazi
aggression. Instead, he makes the case that Stalin neither
feared Hitler nor mistakenly trusted him. He maintains
that after germany occupied Poland, defeated France,
and started to prepare for an invasion of great Britain,
Hitlers intelligence services detected the Soviet Unions
preparations for a major war against germany. This
detection, Suvorov argues, led to germanys preemptive
war plan and the launch of an invasion of the USSr.
Stalin emerges from the pages of this book as a diaboli-
cal genius consumed by visions of a worldwide Com-
munist revolution at any costa leader who wooed
Hitler and germany in his own effort to conquer the
world. In contradicting traditional theories about Soviet
planning before the german invasion and in arguing for
revised view of Stalins real intentions, The Chief
Culprit has provoked debate among historians
throughout the world.
Viktor Suvorov is the author of eighteen books that
have been translated into more than twenty languages,
including Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top
Soviet Spy and Icebreaker: Who Started the Second
World War? a Soviet army offcer who served in mili-
tary intelligence, he defected to the United Kingdom in
1978, where he worked as an intelligence analyst and
lecturer. He lives in england.

Saving the USS Samuel B. Roberts in the Persian Gulf
By Bradley Peniston
Foreward by Adm. William J. Crowe Jr., USN (Ret.)
like its World War II namesake of leyte gulf fame, USS Samuel B.
Roberts (FFg 58) was a small combatant built for escort duty. But its
skipper imbued his crew with a fghting spirit to match their forebears,
and in 1988 when the guided missile frigate was thrust into the Persian
gulf at the height of the Iran-Iraq War, there was no better ship for the
job. Forbidden to fre unless fred upon, Captain Paul rinn and his crew
sailed amid the chaos in the gulf for two months. Their bravery and cool
competence was credited with keeping the ship afoat, and its actions
have become part of Navy lore and a staple of naval leadership courses
ever since.

Robert Komer, Vietnam and American
Cold War Strategy
By Frank Leith Jones
History has not been kind to robert Komer, a casualty
of bad historical analysis and inaccurate information. a
Cold War national security policy and strategy adviser
to three presidents, Komer was one of the most infuen-
tial national security professionals of the era. The book
begins with a review of his early life that helped shape
his worldview. It then examines Komers infuence as
a National Security Council staff member during the
Kennedy administration, where he helped set its activist
course regarding the Third World. Upon Kennedys
death, lyndon Johnson named Komer his point man
for Vietnam pacifcation policy, and later general West-
morelands operational deputy in Vietnam.
The author highlights Komers activities during the
three years he strove to fulfll the presidents vision that
Communism could be repelled from Southeast asia by
economic and social development along with military
force. Known as Blowtorch for his abrasive personal-
ity and disdain for bureaucratic foot dragging, Komer
came to be seen as the right person for managing that
effort, and in 1968 was rewarded with an ambassador-
ship to Turkey. The book analyzes Komers work during
the Carter administration as special adviser to Secre-
tary of defense Harold Brown and Under Secretary
of defense for Policy and credits him for reenergizing
the North atlantic Treaty organizations conventional
capability and forging the military instrument that
implemented the Carter doctrine in the Persian gulf
the rapid deployment Joint Task Force. It also explores
his fnal role as a defense intellectual and critic of the
reagan administrations defense policies. The book
concludes with a useful summary of Komers impact on
american policy and strategy and his contributions to
counterinsurgency practices, a legacy now recognized
for its importance in the wars in Iraq and afghanistan.

he holds the general dwight d. eisenhower Chair of
National Security. a retired member of the Senior
executive Service, he served in several high-level policy
and strategy positions in the offce of the Secretary of

PHASE LINE GREEN
The Battle for Hue, 1968
By Nicholas Warr
The bloody, month-long battle for the Citadel in Hue during 1968 pit-
ted U.S. Marines against an entrenched, numerically superior North
Vietnamese army force. By offcial U.S. accounts it was a tactical and
moral victory for the Marines and the United States. But a survivors
compulsion to square offcial accounts with his contrasting experience
has produced an entirely different perspective of the battle, the most
controversial to emerge from the Vietnam War in decades. In describing
the most vicious urban combat since World War II, this account offers
an unparalleled view of how a small unit commander copes with the con-
ficting demands and responsibilities thrust upon him by the enemy, his
men, and the chain of command.
Nicholas Warr was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for partici-
pation in operation Hue City and was honorably discharged as a frst
lieutenant in March 1970. Today he enjoys a successful career in computer
technology sales. He lives in alpine, California.

FLYING FROM THE BLACk HOLE
The B-52 Navigator-Bombardiers of Vietnam
By Robert O. Harder
air Force navigators and bombardiers have long labored under the
shadow of pilotstheir contributions undervalued, misunderstood, or
simply unknown to the general public. This was especially the case
with the non-pilot offcer aircrew in the Vietnam and Cold War-era
B-52 Stratofortress. of the six people who operated the bomber, three
wore navigator wingstwo of those men were also bombardiers, the
other an electronic warfare offcer. Without the navigator-bombardiers
in particular, executing the nuclear war strike plan or fying Southeast
asian conventional bombing sorties would have been impossible.
This book reveals who these men were and what they did down in the
Black Hole, a story told by one of their own.

LESSONS FROM THE HANOI HILTON
Six Characteristics of High Performance Teams
By Peter Fretwell and Taylor Baldwin Kiland
With Dr. J.P. London
Why were the american PoWs imprisoned at the Ha-
noi Hilton so resilient in captivity and so successful in
their subsequent careers? This book presents six prin-
ciples practiced within the PoW organizational culture
that can be used to develop high-performance teams
everywhere. The authors offer examples from both the
PoWs time in captivity and their later professional lives
that identify, in real-life situations, the characteristics
necessary for sustainable, high-performance teamwork.
The book takes readers inside the mind of James Stock-
dale, a fghter pilot with a degree in philosophy, who
was the senior ranking offcer at the Hanoi prison. The
theories Stockdale practiced become readily understand-
able in this book. drawing parallels between Stockdales
guiding philosophies from the Stoic epictetus and the
principles of modern sports psychology, Peter Fretwell
and Taylor Baldwin Kiland show readers how to apply
these principles to their own organizations and create a
culture with staying power.
originally intending their book to focus on Stockdales
leadership style, the authors found that his approach
toward completing a mission was to assure that it could
be accomplished without him. Stockdale, they explain,
had created a mission-centric organization, not a leader-
centric organization. He had understood that a truly
sustainable culture must not be dependent on a single
individual.
at one level, this book is a business school case study.
It is also an examination of how leadership and organi-
zational principles employed in the crucible of a Hanoi
prison align with todays sports psychology and modern
psychological theories and therapies, as well as the
training principles used by olympic athletes and Navy
Seals. Any group willing to apply these principles can
move their mission forward and create a culture with
staying powerone that outlives individual members.
Peter Fretwell is the general manager of The Classical
Network, based in New Jersey. during his MBa studies
in strategic leadership, he became convinced the lessons
the PoWs brought home could beneft other organiza-
tions and spent more than seven years researching the
topic. He lives in robbinsville, NJ. Taylor Baldwin
Kiland, a former naval offcer, is a management consul-
tant with a large technology and strategy consulting frm
and lives in alexandria, Virginia. She is the author or
coauthor of three books, including Open Doors: Vietnam

RESURRECTION
Salvaging the Battle Fleet at Pearl Harbor
By Daniel Madsen
aimed at the general reader with an interest in World War II and the
U.S. Navy, this book looks at the massive salvage effort that followed
the attack on Pearl Harbor, beginning with the damage control efforts
aboard the sinking and damaged ships in the harbor on 7 december
1941 and ending in March 1944 when salvage efforts on the USS Utah
were fnally abandoned. dan Madsen describes the Navys dramatic
race to clear the harbor and repair as many ships as possible so they
could return to the feet ready for war. Numerous photographs, many
never before published in books for the general public, give readers a

RED STAR OvER THE PACIFIC
Chinas Rise and the Challenge to
U.S. Maritime Security
By Toshi Yoshihara and James R. Holmes
If you are going to read one book about the Chinese
military, read this one.
Robert D. Kaplan, national correspondent for
The atlantic and senior fellow at the Center for a
NewAmerican Security
Red Star Over the Pacifc offers an in-depth assess-
ment of the impact of the rise of Chinese sea power
on U.S. maritime strategy in asia. Benefting from the
co-authors unique blend of skills and talents, the book
combines Yoshiharas close knowledge of asia and his
ability to tap Chinese-language sources with Holmes
naval combat experience and expertise in sea-power
theory to argue that Chinas ascent as a naval power
must be addressed.
Yoshihara and Holmes argue that China is laying the
groundwork for a sustained challenge to american
primacy in maritime asia, and to defend this hypothesis,
they look back to alfred Thayer Mahans sea-power
theories now popular with the Chinese. The book con-
siders how strategic thought about the sea shapes Bei-
jings deliberations and compares Chinas geostrategic
predicament to that of the Kaisers germany a century
ago. While offering insight into the infuence of Western
strategic thought on Chinese maritime strategy, the au-
thors also consider the infuence of Chinese thinkers like
Sun Tzu and Mao Zedong. They examine the Chinese
navys operational concepts, tactics, and capabilities
and appraise Chinas ballistic-missile submarine feet.
debunking dismissive attitudes toward Chinese mari-
time prowess and exaggerations of U.S. naval superior-
ity, they also stress that the Chinese navy has a long
way to go. However, unless Washington responds to this
strategy, then Chinas rise as a maritime power presents
a serious threat to americas long range strategic posi-
tion in asia.

THE BLITZkRIEG LEGEND
The 1940 Campaign in the West
By Karl-Heinz Frieser
Now available in paperback, The Blitzkrieg Legend is an illuminating
german perspective on the decisive blitzkrieg campaign. This account
provides the defnitive explanation for germanys startling success and
the equally surprising military collapse of France and Britain on the eu-
ropean continent in 1940. First published in 1995 as the offcial german
history of the 1940 campaign, this book goes beyond standard explana-
tions to show that the german victory was not inevitable and that French
defeat was not preordained. Friesers groundbreaking interpretation of
the topic has been the subject of discussion since the german edition
frst appeared. This english translation is published in cooperation with
the association of the United States army.
Karl-Heinz Frieser was a colonel in the germany army and head of the
department of World Wars I and II at the Military History research Insti-

SHEPHERDS OF THE SEA
Destroyer Escorts in World War II
By Robert F. Cross
Shepherds of the Sea is a wonderful and well-written study of the
noble role U.S. destroyer escorts played in winning the Second World
WarHighly recommended!
Douglas Brinkley, author of The Wilderness Warrior:
Theodore roosevelt and the Crusade for america
This compelling tale of courage, heroism, and terror is told in the words
of ninety-one sailors and offcers interviewed by the author about their
World War II service aboard ffty-six destroyer escorts. Unseasoned
teenage recruits when they frst went to sea, these sailors were led by
inexperienced college boys and their ships were viewed as a waste of
money. Yet these sailors helped turn the tide of the war in the atlantic,
and destroyer escorts fought in every major battle in the Pacifc.
Robert F. Cross is a trustee of the USS Slater, the last destroyer escort still
afoat in the United States, and is the author of Sailor in the White House:

THE MEASURE OF A MAN
My Father, the Marine Corps, and Saipan
By Kathleen Broome Williams
Maj. roger g. B. Broome, USMCr, died from wounds
received on Saipan before his daughter had a chance
to know him. Now a well-known naval historian and
author of award-winning books, that daughter, Kathleen
Broome Williams, has turned the research skills she
honed studying naval technology to fnd her lost father.
For this biography, she makes full use of an extensive
collection of her fathers colorful and articulate letters
along with the testimony of surviving leathernecks
who served with Major Broome, backed up by offcial
records.

The book reconstructs her fathers life as a University
of Virginia law School graduate who obtained a com-
mission in the Marine Corps despite his colorblindness
and eventually won the combat command he lobbied so
hard to receive. In april 1944 Broome took command of
the regimental Weapons Company, 24th Marines, 4th
Marine division. But his pursuit of glory came to an
abrupt end just twenty-four days into the Saipan inva-
sion when he sustained the wounds that condemned him
to a lingering death. The author not only found a hero
who was awarded the Navy Cross for his courageous ac-
tions, but also uncovered a profoundly human individual
with strengths as well as obvious faults. In unfolding
Broomes story, she takes signifcant world events
from seventy years ago and places them in an intimate
context, to show how they affected americans on and
off the battlefeld. Her efforts provide an inside look at
the U.S. Marine Corps during the pivotal years of World
War II, including recruit training, amphibious assaults,
high casualties, and, not least, the personal feuds and
rivalries that shaped it.
Kathleen Broome Williams, a graduate of Wellesley
College and Columbia University, holds a Phd from
City University of New York. She is the author of Grace
Hopper: Admiral of the Cyber Sea, a North ameri-
can Society for oceanic History award winner, Secret
Weapon: U.S. High-Frequency Direction Finding in the
Battle of the Atlantic, and Improbable Warriors: Women
Scientists and the U.S. Navy in World War II, which won
a History of Science Society book award. Currently, she
is a professor of history at Cogswell Polytechnical Col-
lege in Sunnyvale, California, and lives in oakland, Ca.

THE BATTLESHIP BUILDERS
Constructing and Arming British
Capital Ships
By Ian Johnston and Ian Buxton
The launch in 1906 of HMS Dreadnought, the
worlds frst all-big-gun battleship, rendered all
existing battle feets obsolete while at the same
time wiping out the royal Navys numerical
advantage. Britain urgently needed to build an
entirely new battle feet of these larger, more
complex and more costly vessels. In this she suc-
ceeded spectacularly: in little over a decade ffty
such ships were completed, almost exactly double
what germany achieved. This heroic achievement
was made possible by the countrys vast indus-
trial nexus of shipbuilders, engine manufacturers,
armament frms and specialist armor producers,
whose contribution to the creation of the grand
Fleet is too often ignored.
Ian Johnston has had a lifelong interest in ship-
building. His most recent book, Clydebank
Battlecruisers, was published in 2011. Ian Buxton,
a retired naval architect, is an acknowledged expert
on shipbuilding, and is perhaps best known for his
book Big Gun Monitors. Both authors live in the
United Kingdom.

X.1
The Royal Navys Mystery Submarine
By Roger Branfll-Cook
The X stood for experimental, but it might equally have meant extraor-
dinary, exotic or extravagant, as this giant submarine attracted superla-
tivesthe worlds largest, most heavily armed, and deepest diving sub-
mersible of the day. X.1 was a controversial project conceived behind the
backs of politicians, and would remain an unwanted stepchild. This book
explores the historical background of submarine cruisers, the personali-
ties involved in X.1s design and service, the spy drama surrounding
her launch, the treason trial of a leading rN submarine commander, the
ships checkered career, and her political demise. Well-illustrated with
technical drawings and historical photographs, this book pays belated
tribute to the real importance of the mysterious X.1.
Roger Branfll-Cook is a professional translator from French into
english. He has written numerous articles for specialist magazines and
is both a novelist and an author of non-fction books.

BIG GUNS, BRAvE MEN
Mobile Artillery Observers and the
Battle for Okinawa
By Rodney Earl Walton
although it was the largest and fnal battle of the Pacifc
War, the Battle for okinawa has long been overshad-
owed by other dramatic events in 1945. The books
that have been written about it emphasize the role of
infantrymen, armor, and U.S. Marines. This work takes
a fresh perspective and focuses on the vital role played
by the U.S. armys forward artillery observersthe
eyes and ears of american artillery who were among the
least recognized heroes of the war. according to rodney
earl Walton, U.S. artillerymen matched Japanese gun-
ners in intensity and surpassed them in effectiveness
because their forward observers were able to provide
a much shorter response time to requests for artillery
support. divided into teams consisting of four or fve
men led by an artillery lieutenant, these observers would
spend three days on the front lines directing artillery
against enemy positions, return to their artillery battery
for three days, and then rotate up to the line of battle
again. While trying to maximize the damage inficted
on the enemy, the men had to deal with the ever-present
possibility of fring on their own forces. The ability to
shift artillery fre throughout the battlefeld was a new
development in World War II, and its evolution is fully
examined in the book.
Walton, the son of one of the forward observers on oki-
nawa, spent more than twenty years investigating what
happened to his father and other artillerymen during the
confict. Interviews with the artillerymen and the infan-
trymen they supported are central to his story, which is
flled with gripping and sometimes humorous accounts
of what happened. The work stands as a stirring trib-
ute from the baby boom generation to the greatest
generation.
Rodney Earl Walton served in the U.S. army from
1969 to 1973, including a year with military intelli-
gence in Vietnam. In 1976 he earned a law degree from
Cornell and worked as a civil litigation attorney in South
Florida for more than twenty years. In 2009 he earned
a Phd in history from Florida International University,
where he now teaches. He lives in Miami, Fl.

FALLUJAH AWAkENS
Marines, Sheikhs, and the Battle Against
al Qaeda
By Bill Ardolino
The cradle of an insurgency that plunged Iraq into years
of chaos and bloodshed, Fallujah conjures up images of
the brutal house-to-house fghting that occurred during
the 2004 U.S. invasion of the iconic city. But attacks in
the area actually peaked two years later, when american
and Iraqi government forces struggled with a reinvigo-
rated insurgency and the prospect of premature with-
drawal by U.S. forces. Fallujah Awakens tells the story
of the remarkable turnaround that followed. Journalist
Bill ardolino explains how local tribal leaders and U.S.
Marines forged a surprising alliance that helped secure
the famous battleground. It is one of the few books to re-
count events from both american and Iraqi perspectives.
Based on more than 120 interviews with Iraqis and
U.S. Marines, ardolino describes how a company of
reservists, led by a medical equipment sales manager
from Michigan, succeeded where previous efforts had
stalled. Circumstance combined with smart, charismatic
leadership enabled americans to build relationships with
members of a Sunni tribeonce written off as danger-
ous and intractable who pushed al Qaeda and other
insurgents from their notoriously rebellious area.
accidental killings, intertribal rivalries, insurgents,
and intrigue all conspired to undo the tenuous alliance
forged between the americans and tribesmen on Fallu-
jahs Peninsula. But the partnership was cemented after
a Marine commanders risky decision to welcome nearly
100 injured civilians onto a secure american facility
after a ruthless chemical attack by al Qaeda.
The books gripping storyline will appeal to readers of
historical nonfction. Its exhaustive documentation will
prove valuable to military students, analysts, and histo-
rians and will help policy makers better understand what
is possible in counterinsurgency. Photographs and maps
further enhance the readers understanding of everything
from tribal dynamics to the geography of frefghts.
Bill Ardolino is an associate editor of The Long War
Journal. He was embedded with the U.S. Marine Corps,
the U.S. army, the Iraqi army, and the Iraqi Police in
Fallujah, Habbaniyah, and Baghdad in 2006, 2007, and
2008, and later with U.S. and afghan forces in Kabul,
Helmand and Khost provinces in afghanistan. His
reports, columns, and photographs have received wide
media exposure and have been cited in a number of aca-
demic publications. He lives in Washington, d.C.

History Emigration
PASSAGE TO THE WORLD
The Emigrant Experience 18181939
By Kevin Brown
From the early nineteenth century onwards, millions of people left their
homes to cross the seas. Some, like the convicts transported from eng-
land to australia, had no choice; others like the indentured Indian and
Chinese laborers had almost no alternative; but the vast majority of emi-
grants were driven to escape war, famine or grinding poverty. Whatever
their circumstances and wherever their destination, the one experience
they all shared in common was the sea voyage.
This history traces the story of the emigrant, from the decision to emi-
grate, to the journey to the port and the voyage itself, to arrival in the
new world. It describes the differing conditions on board sailing ships
and steamers, convict and coolie ships, and the perils of overcrowding,
epidemics, fre, shipwreck and even cannibalism. It also investigates the
varied receptions emigrants were likely to face.
Kevin Brown is the Curator of the alexander Fleming Museum at St.
Marys Hospital, Paddington, United Kingdom. His previous books in-

killed him. In 2011, to better understand what happened,
Jampoler retraced Taunts expedition in an outboard
motorboat. Striking photographs from the authors trip
are included to lend a visual dimension to the original
journey.
readers join Taunt in his exploration of some 1,400
miles of river and follow him on two additional assign-
ments. a commercial venture to collect elephant ivory
in the rivers great basin and an appointment as the U.S.
State departments frst resident diplomat in Boma,
capital of King leopold IIs Congo Free State, are flled
with promise. But instead of becoming rich and famous,
he died alone, bankrupt, and disgraced. Jampolers ac-
count of what went so dreadfully wrong is both thrilling
and tragic. He provides not only a fascinating look at
Taunts brief and extraordinary life, but also a glimpse
of the role the United States played in the birth of the
Congo nation, and the increasingly awkward position
Washington found itself as stories of atrocities against
the natives began to leak out.
Andrew C. A. Jampoler spent twenty-four years as a
naval aviator before his retirement from the U.S. Navy
in 1986. a resident of loudoun County, Virginia, he has
been writing history books and magazine articles for
more than a dozen years, winning the Naval Institute
Presss author of the Year in 2003 for Adak and Naval

FRENCH CRUISERS, 19221956
By John Jordan and Jean Moulin
The French produced some of the most striking and
innovative interwar cruiser designs. a large amount
of new information about these ships has become
available over the past twenty years in France, but
this book is the frst to make this information acces-
sible to an english-speaking readership.
Part I explains the design philosophy behind
each of the classes built after 1922, and outlines
the characteristics of each type, accompanied by
detailed data tables and a comprehensive set of
specially-drawn plans based on offcial docu-
ments, as well as carefully-selected photographs.
Part II deals with the historical side, covering
not only the eventful careers of these ships in
both war and peace. like its highly successful
predecessor, French Battleships, this beautifully
presented book subtly blends technical and his-
torical analysis to produce what must become the
standard reference work.
John Jordan is the editor of the Warship annual and
a lifelong student of French naval history. Jean Mou-
lin, his collaborator on this book, is a leading French
authority on the ships of the Marine Nationale.

TO CROWN THE WAvES
The Great Navies of the First World War
Edited by Vincent P. OHara, W. David Dickson,
and Richard Worth
The only comparative analysis available of the great
navies of World War I, this work studies the royal Navy
of the United Kingdom, the german Kaiserliche Marine,
the United States Navy, the French Marine Nationale,
the Italian regia Marina, the austro-Hungarian Kaiserli-
che und Knigliche Kriegsmarine, and the Imperial rus-
sian Navy to demonstrate why the war was won, not in
the trenches, but upon the waves. It explains why these
seven feets fought the way they did and why the war at
sea did not develop as the admiralties and politicians of
1914 expected.
after discussing each navys goals and circumstances
and how their individual characteristics impacted the
way they fought, the authors deliver a side-by-side anal-
ysis of the conficts feets, with each chapter covering a
single navy. Parallel chapter structures assure consistent
coverage of each feethistory, training, organization,
doctrine, materiel, and operationsand allow read-
ers to easily compare information among the various
navies. The book clearly demonstrates how the naval
war was a collision of 19
th
century concepts with 20
th
century weapons that fostered unprecedented develop-
ment within each navy and sparked the evolution of the
submarine and aircraft carrier. The work is free from the
national bias that infects so many other books on World
War I navies. as they pioneer new ways of viewing the
confict, the authors provide insights and material that
would otherwise require a massive library and mastery
of multiple languages. Such a study has special rel-
evance today as 20
th
-century navies struggle to adapt to
21
st
-century technologies.
Vincent P. OHara is the author of The German Fleet
at War, The U.S. Navy Against the Axis, and Struggle
for the Middle Sea all published by the Naval Institute
Press. He lives in Chula Vista, Ca. W. David Dickson
is the author of The Battle of the Philippine Sea and
lives in Hernando, MS. Richard Worth is the author of
Fleets of World War II, In the Shadow of the Battleship,
and Raising the Red Banner. He lives in Bolivar, Mo.

ROUGH RIDER
The Life of Theodore Roosevelt
By M. David Key
Rough Rider is a snapshot study of the signifcant career of President
Theodore roosevelt. Partly biographical sketch and partly analysis,
the book provides an overview of his actions, ideals, and written works,
highlighting important events from roosevelts early public life, his
presidency, and later career. david Key sees roosevelt as a statesman
who well understood how to create his own popular image, but equally
important was roosevelts place as one of the foremost historians of his
time, a man who understood the traditional criteria for greatness and
did not hesitate to shape his own legacy. Written especially for college
students, Rough Rider examines pertinent primary sources and criti-
cal analyses of other historians to aid in understanding the legacy of
Theodore roosevelt.
M. David Key is a native Floridian and a graduate of the University of
New Mexico, where he earned a Phd. He taught at the University of
New Mexico and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and now teaches
at Tusculum College. He currently resides in greeneville, TN.

CENTURY MAHAN
Sound Military Conclusions for the Modern Era
Edited by Benjamin Armstrong
alfred Thayer Mahans The Infuence of Seapower upon History is well
known to students of naval history and strategy, but his other writings
are often dismissed as irrelevant to todays problems. This collection
of fve of Mahans essays, along with Benjamin armstrongs informa-
tive introductions, illustrates why Mahans work remains relevant to the
21
st
-century and how it can help develop our strategic thinking. People
misunderstand Mahan, the editor argues, because they have read only
what others say about him, not what Mahan wrote himself. armstrongs
analysis is derived directly from Mahans own writings. He demonstrates
that Mahans ideas continue to provide todays readers with a solid foun-
dation to address the challenges of a rapidly globalizing world.
LCDR Benjamin Armstrong, USN, is a 1999 Naval academy graduate
and naval aviator. His writing has appeared inProceedingsand the Infnity
Journal. Currently, he is a MPhil/Phd candidate with the department of
War Studies at Kings College, london.

Memoirs
Ten Years and Twenty Days
GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DOENITZ
Preface by Jak P. Mallmann Showell
Introduction and Afterword by Jrgen Rohwer
The Officer Commanding U-boats was like the god, Janus.
One of his faces was turned towards the Atlantic, the other
towards home. With one face he watched over his U-boats far
out in the Atlantic. He and his Operations staff, in the anxieties
which beset them and in the plans they made, felt that they were
sharing the grim battles, the dangers and the hardships at sea.
Whenever I possibly could, I always visited and talked to the
crews at once, as soon as they returned to base.
It was, I must confess, when I saw them thus, emaciated,
strained, their pale faces crowned with beards of many a week at
sea and in their leather jackets smeared with oil and flecked with
the salt of the ocean, that they seemed nearest to my heart. There
was a tangible bond between us.
GRAND ADMIRAL KARL DOENITZ
Commander of Nazi Germanys U-boats throughout the Battle
of the Atlantic and Hitlers successor as Head of State for twenty
days in 1945, Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz wrote these memoirs
after serving a 10-year sentence in Spandau Prison having been
convicted at the Nuremberg war crimes trials.
With a new Preface by Jak P. Mallmann Showell and an
Introduction and Afterword by the German historian Jrgen
Rohwer, who knew Doenitz well and has contributed a
commentary on his handling of the Battle of the Atlantic, this
book is not only an invaluable work of reference but also an
absorbing and fascinating memoir of an outstanding war leader.

THE kISSING SAILOR
The Mystery Behind the Photo that Ended World War II
What a wonderful detective story about a
kissing sailor and a beautiful nursethe most
famous couple celebrating the end of WWII.
Famous by anonymous until now. I loved it.
Tom Brokaw, author of The Time of Our Lives and
The Greatest Generation
By Lawrence Verria and George Galdorisi. Fore-
word by David Hartman. on august 14, 1945,
alfred eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kiss-
ing a nurse in Times Square, minutes after they
heard of Japans surrender to the United States.
For almost two decades lawrence Verria and
george galdorisi were intrigued by the contro-
versy surrounding the identity of the two prin-
cipals in eisenstaedts most famous photograph
and collected evidence that began to shed light
on this mystery. With this book, the authors solve
the 67-year-old mystery by providing irrefut-
able proof to identify the couple in eisenstaedts
photo. It is the frst time the whole truth behind
the celebrated picture has been revealed.
