Grocery deliveries common

In the early 1940s Clinton folks were used to going to the phone to tell the grocer to rush right out with a loaf of bread, when the breadbox is discovered empty just as the family sat down to the table. But as rationing got going in the early days of WWII, that soon became just another fond memory of pre-war days. Because grocery trucks were not included on the privileged list of those for which tires must be purchased, a number of local food merchants were forced to eliminate delivery service entirely, and several others inaugurated schedules which would cut down on use of equipment. Kayser Grocery and Market at 715 Frisco announced, Were not making any arbitrary ruling. Well continue to deliver as often as possible during the day, but we are asking our customers to cooperate by eliminating all possible orders and so far they have seemed glad to do so. Piggly Wiggly at 517 Frisco announced that they would continue to do two deliveries each day but only one to each customer. Orders placed in the forenoon would be delivered in afternoon, those in afternoon, on succeeding forenoon. Robert McAbee, proprietor of Kash & Kary Food Market, 115 S. 6th announced, Delivery will go on as usual until they stop me. Ive got plenty of tires. Collier and Walton at 700 Avant announced, Service as usual. Deliveries as fast as the boy can get around to it until further notice. M System would continue to make two deliveries a day but only one to each customer. Orders must be placed before 10 .m. and 2 p.m. Pucketts Grocery and Market at 520 Avant eliminated deliveries entirely. The two large chain grocery stores at the time were Bestway and Safeway. They did not make any deliveries. Clinton Daily News January 6, 1942

I remember it well . . .
Do any of you remember seeing Eileen Stack and Dorothy Ricks tap dance in the minstrel shows? Dorothy was 6 feet tall and Eileen was 5 feet tall. They were hysterical! Kitty Fisher Facebook Sometimes wed go to Bluncks with Brandy Goss, and she would take us upstairs. There was all kinds of stuff up there, and wed just mess around. It was so big with a bunch of offices. Julie Burden Menge I got arrested once. I was driving back from Arapaho on 6th Street in the Pontiac. Now that car liked to run! All of a sudden I saw lights and heard the siren. We lived right there in the Hamilton Apartments, so I just kept coming and pulled in home and parked.

In 1962 the Clinton Public Library celebrated it 50th Anniversary with a grand opening of it new facility at 8th and Frisco. The library first started in 1912 with 56 volumes that had been donated by members of the Literary Club. It had previously been housed in space donated by C.I. Randolph, who was then city attorney, and in the city hall. The libary was remodeled and expanded in the fall of 1994.

That policeman came rushin up there and wanted to see my license. I didnt have it with me, so he let me go in and get it. Then he said I owed a $10 fine. Well, I didnt have 10 dollars, and neither did Roy, so he had to go down the alley to the Bungalo to cash a check and bail me out. It was pretty scary for me, Ill tell you, but now its just funny.
