For the first time ever, the American Academy of Pediatricsin collaboration with the National Coalition for Health Professional Education in Geneticswill present a live, 1 day course dedicated to providing primary care pediatric professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to integrate genetics into their everyday practice. Dive into the Gene Pool offers cutting edge research and practical guidance for navigating new technologies and information that will support the early identification and management of patients with genetic conditions using family health history, expert referrals, and genetic testing. Dive into the Gene Pool is designed for: Primary care pediatricians Pediatric specialists/subspecialists Family physicians  Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other pediatric health care clinicians WHY SHOULD YOU DIVE INTO THE GENE POOL? Have you ever felt like you were missing some pieces of the puzzle when diagnosing or treating patients in your primary care practice? Genetics, genomics, and epigenetics play a profound role in health and disease. By enhancing your understanding of genetic medicine and pediatric genetic conditionsand their impact on every child and family in your practiceyou may be surprised by how easy it is to incorporate genetic thinking into your practice and how seamlessly the puzzle pieces then fall into place. Through your participation in this course, you will:  Recognize the role of genetics, genomics, and epigenetics in health and disease.  Identify the role of the primary care clinician in the identification and management of patients with genetic conditions using family health history, expert referrals, and genetic testing.  State the importance of family history in prevention, diagnosis, and management of children and adolescents in primary care, and utilize practical and innovative tools to construct a problem-based family history, a living history or a pedigree in the medical chart.  Apply effective communication strategies when conducting a genetic evaluation, interpreting test results, or engaging in difficult discussions with patients and their families.  Demonstrate appropriate coding for genetic conditions, and utilize the electronic health record to capture valuable genetics information.  Apply a wide range of available resources, technologies, and tools that promote early identification, referral, and management of patients with genetic conditions.
