T
HE Los Angeles Business Journal held the 2013 Women
Making a Difference Awards Reception and Luncheon event
at the Platinum Ballroom in the J.W. Marriott Hotel at LA
Live in Los Angeles on May 14th.
Described by attendees as an uplifting and inspirational event,
the celebration honored Los Angeles based women who lead by
example, successfully blending effective business vision with a pas-
sionate commitment to positively making a difference, both in
the world of business and in the communities they serve.
More than 250 prestigious nominees were submitted to the
judges by Los Angeles Business Journal readers this year. So the
judges had the unenviable task of narrowing the field down to six
honorees for this years big event.
It wasnt easy to select just six honorees for this years awards, so
we have also taken the time to single out, for honorable mention,
an incredible selection of finalists all superb examples of women
who genuinely make a difference in their own right. Each is also
profiled in these pages.
Specifically categorized Awards of Recognition were presented to a
group of women who have truly blazed a path of leadership and
inspiration for all Angelenos.
The 2013 Women Making a Difference honorees included: Paige
Adams-Gellar, Paige (Owner or CEO of the Year Award); Gwynne
Shotwell, SpaceX (Executive of the Year Award); Kelly Merryman,
Netflix (Rising Star of the Year Award); Nancy Bernstein, DreamWorks
(Volunteer of the Year Award); Karen Barter Fielding (Philanthropist of
the Year Award); and Monica Dodi, The Womens Venture Capital
Fund (Corporate Advocate of the Year Award).
Congratulations to all the honorees, finalists and nominees!

after joining the
Dodgers and taking a 50-year-

improving it in a span of just
five off-season months is truly
a remarkable feat.
Smith, a renowned archi-
tect and urban planner,
joined the Los Angeles
Dodgers organization as
Senior Vice President of
Planning Development on
August 6, 2012. She was
reunited with Dodger
President Stan Kasten, who
she worked for in a similar
position to create the Atlanta
Braves Turner Field and the
Atlanta Hawks Philips Arena.
Smith is probably best
known in the baseball world

facility that blends with the
urban contest of downtown
Baltimore while taking inspi-

now brings to the Dodgers. In
the five short months she has
been with the Dodgers she
has made dramatic improve-

have earned raves from fans,
players and the media.

WOMEN MAKING A DIFFERENCE 2013 HONOREES
KARIN BARTER FIELDING
K
ARIN Fielding possesses an unwavering commitment to helping
others. She is dedicated to ensuring that those most in need
are given the opportunities and assistance they need to sur-
vive and thrive.
For the past several years, Fielding has volunteered her time as a Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), helping abused and neglected foster
children to receive the best outcomes possible as they move through the
dependency court system. For the past decade, Fielding has also been
involved with The Everychild Foundation whose mission is to ease suffering
of children whether due to disease, disability, abuse, neglect or poverty. Over
200 women are members of the Foundation and combine their financial
resources to support the funding of one $1 million community project each
year. This giving circle model is a growing and highly successful approach
to philanthropy that is gaining momentum across the country. Over the
past 12 years, Everychild has allocated $9.5 million in grant funding with
over 500,000 children benefitting from these projects. In 2005, she became a
member of the Kayne Eras Center Angels, a group of philanthropic women
who are committed to supporting the continuum of special education and
therapeutic services provided by the Kayne Eras Center (KEC).
With her deep commitment to improving the quality of community life
and public health, in early 2012, Fielding and her husband Dr. Jonathan
Fielding donated assets valued at $50 million to the renamed UCLA
Jonathan and Karin Fielding School of Public Health the largest gift in the
schools 50-year history.
Her volunteer work with abused and neglected children in the child wel-
fare system; her leadership at the Everychild Foundation; the phenomenal
gift she and her husband, Dr. Jonathan Fielding, made to UCLA to support
public health; and her involvement with ECF ensuring that children with
special needs receive the education they deserve all demonstrate not only
her civic responsibility, but also her caring, generous and giving spirit.

oni Jaramilla grew up in a working class family who
immigrated from the Philippines. Her life experiences shaped
her path towards a career as an equal rights attorney. She
has been practicing employment law since 1994. Jaramilla
is recognized as a erce and compassionate lawyer, successfully representing workers
in hundreds of claims involving discrimination on the basis of race, gender, pregnancy,
disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, political afliation, harassment, retaliation,
wrongful termination, and unpaid wages.
Since her college years, Jaramilla had always envisioned a career path that included
making a difference in peoples lives and creating positive social change through advocacy.
As a UCLA undergraduate, Jaramilla was a student activist and peer counselor, providing
encouragement and mentorship to low income and minority students so that they could
successfully graduate. In law school and immediately upon obtaining her law degree,
she took leadership positions in organizations that provide pro bono legal assistance to
low income and immigrant communities who have limited access to the justice system.
Jaramilla continues volunteering her time through outreach organizations to help educate
communities about their legal rights.
As the founder and sole proprietor of her law rm, Jaramilla successfully manages a
thriving law practice while vigorously representing her clients who are from all walks of
life ranging from minimum wage earners to top executives and professionals from many
industries. Despite having a demanding law practice and being a mother of two young
daughters, Jaramilla mentors many students and new lawyers who reach out to her for help.
Jaramilla is currently the Chair of the California Employment Lawyers Association, one
of Californias strongest employee rights group comprised of attorneys. While on the CELA
Board, she helped form the Diversity Outreach Committee with a mission to help increase
multi-cultural and gender diversity in the legal profession through scholarships and
fellowships. Jaramilla was the 2010 recipient of CELAs Joe Posner Award in recognition
of her tireless commitment to the betterment of the plight of workers and the expansion of
their rights...
