T
HE Los Angeles Business Journal held the 2013 Women
Making a Difference Awards Reception and Luncheon event
at the Platinum Ballroom in the J.W. Marriott Hotel at LA
Live in Los Angeles on May 14th.
Described by attendees as an uplifting and inspirational event,
the celebration honored Los Angeles based women who lead by
example, successfully blending effective business vision with a pas-
sionate commitment to positively making a difference, both in
the world of business and in the communities they serve.
More than 250 prestigious nominees were submitted to the
judges by Los Angeles Business Journal readers this year. So the
judges had the unenviable task of narrowing the field down to six
honorees for this years big event.
It wasnt easy to select just six honorees for this years awards, so
we have also taken the time to single out, for honorable mention,
an incredible selection of finalists all superb examples of women
who genuinely make a difference in their own right. Each is also
profiled in these pages.
Specifically categorized Awards of Recognition were presented to a
group of women who have truly blazed a path of leadership and
inspiration for all Angelenos.
The 2013 Women Making a Difference honorees included: Paige
Adams-Gellar, Paige (Owner or CEO of the Year Award); Gwynne
Shotwell, SpaceX (Executive of the Year Award); Kelly Merryman,
Netflix (Rising Star of the Year Award); Nancy Bernstein, DreamWorks
(Volunteer of the Year Award); Karen Barter Fielding (Philanthropist of
the Year Award); and Monica Dodi, The Womens Venture Capital
Fund (Corporate Advocate of the Year Award).

PAIGE ADAMS-GELLER
Founder & Creative Director
Paige
Culver City
P
AIGE Adams-Geller founded her LA-based premium denim company,
Paige, after learning first hand about the intricacies of design and
production as a model for number of top brands. Adams-Gellar
launched Paige in 2005 via high-end retailers with every detail care-
fully calculated, from a contoured waistband to forward sitting side seams
and each style designed with the customer in mind. The designs became an
instant obsession of consumers, celebrities, and prominent fashion editors.
Paige continued to grow, and by 2007, the company had introduced mens,
maternity and petite lines that built off specific customer needs and the
brands perfected fits.
Harnessing her industry expertise, Adams-Geller has grown Paige into a
category leader in a field dominated by male designers, colloquially known
as the denim mafia. She is the first woman to make a name for herself in
the premium denim category and is the face of the brand as well as the com-
panys Creative Director, leading product design decisions. The business grew
more than 40% last year and continues to outpace the market, demonstrat-
ing its leadership position in the premium denim category.
Adams-Geller is not only a leading LA entrepreneur and business owner,
she is also passionate about philanthropy. She is a womens advocate, sup-
porting several charities including RAINN, which supports victims of sexual
abuse through education, resources and services for those who need recovery
and prosecution. She is on the national leadership council and created the
RAINN Collection of Paige denim in March 2012, donating proceeds to sup-
port sexual abuse survivors. Given the propensity for eating disorders in the
fashion industry, Adams-Geller is also an advocate for individuals facing this
challenge. She champions overcoming body image issues in multiple ways,
including by supporting the National Eating Disorders of America (NEDA).
Her passion for breaking down walls and for championing womens issues
shows that her leadership and courage have no bounds.

ONI Erickson Knight found-
ed WorldLink, one of the
worlds leading and fastest-
growing multiplatform advertis-
ing sales firms, in 1997.
Specializing in direct response
advertising, WorldLink is at the
forefront in demonstrating the
powerful messaging and attractive
return on investment direct
response spots create for advertis-
ers particularly in todays mar-
ket, where new technology fur-
ther empowers marketers to build

Knight launched WorldLink in

a year, the company was profitable
and enjoying surging growth.
Today, it has a global team of more
than 60 individuals with offices in
L.A. and New York all handling
200-plus companies throughout
the world. In 2012 WorldLink had
booked sales of $198 million. She
has built WorldLink into the

its kind.
Among WorldLinks diverse and

Comcast, MGM Television, Post-

Knight was one of the first
industry executives to identify the
potential of direct response mar-

Dr. CECILIA JEFFERSON
CEO, Founder
Fred Jefferson Memorial Homes
Gardena
D
R. Cecilia Jefferson, a for-
mer social worker with the
Department of Children
and Family Services, developed
what would become her career
focus after discovering a crucial
need for quality care. As a social
worker, Dr. Jefferson witnessed
firsthand how abused children
were emotionally wounded and
how too many children also expe-
rienced great difficulty developing
healthy relationships and creating
gratifying productive lives. Dr.
Jefferson sought to assist children
in foster care by creating an excep-
tional organization that is cultural-
ly familiar with the needs of the
community it serves.
In 1989, Dr. Jefferson founded
the Fred Jefferson Memorial
Homes for Boys. Her love of chil-
dren inspired her to develop a
quality home-like environment for
children in need of out of home
placement. She has operated up to
five group homes at one time. In
1995, she also opened the Fred
Jefferson Foster Family Agency
where families are certified and
trained to provide out of home
care for children removed from
their birth homes due to abuse
and/or neglect. In 1996 she
opened Freeman Enrichment
Center, a non-public school,
designed to provide a nurturing
educational program for children
with special needs coupled with
behavioral problems.
Although she has been recog-
nized with multiple awards from
Los Angeles officials and govern-
ment agencies, perhaps her proud-
est moment came when she was
installed on June 28, 2006 by King
Otun Yeye Mokun Zebu-Ife and the
government of Nigeria as Chief
Yeye Mokun-Oodua Ijebu-Ife in
recognition of her persistent work
within the Nigerian community
aiding in the progression of educa-
tion and empowering women in
owning their own businesses.
SUSAN KENDALL
President
Kendall Frozen Fruits, Inc.
Beverly Hills
I
N 1976, when Kendall Frozen
Fruits, Inc. was doing less than
one million dollars per year,
Susan Kendall purchased the com-
pany from her father, who found-
ed it in 1939. Not content to keep
the company at this level, she
fought resentment and gender bias
in a male dominated industry and
helped the company climb to its
current status today with some of
the nations largest food compa-
nies as her clients.
Kendall overcame the naysayers
by working harder and smarter,
bringing new ideas to clients and
helping them question the way
things were done. Under her stew-
ardship, the company has been
one of the top fifty women-owned
businesses since 1993 and has
been instrumental in overcoming
male exclusivity in the field.
Kendall was instrumental in
matching product to customer and
customer to product, and was even
directly involved in launching
both the raspberry and boysenber-
ry industries in Australia and New
Zealand introducing these previ-
ously unknown down under
berry plants to those nations.
Kendall and her company also
pioneered the development and
marketing of specialty dried
products such as cranberries,
cherries and blueberries, now
widely accepted and used in trail
mixes and nutritional bars.
Kendall Frozen Fruits also helped
to popularize value added fruit
concentrates.
Aside from leading a pioneer-
ing food company to continued
success, Kendall also makes time
to serve on the Board of
Governors for Cedars-Sinai
Hospital, is an active member of
Friends of Sheba, also active in
the Womens Democratic
Leadership Forum and is philan-
thropically involved with various
charitable organizations.
CANDACE NELSON
Founder & Pastry Chef
Sprinkles Cupcakes
Beverly Hills
C
ANDACE Nelson is the
founder and pastry chef of
Sprinkles Cupcakes, the
worlds first cupcake bakery.
Started in Beverly Hills in 2005,
Nelsons sophisticated take on the
classic American cupcake made
Sprinkles an overnight bakery sen-
sation. Her cupcakes, made from
the best ingredients and baked
fresh throughout the day, inspire
long lines of devoted fans as well
as accolades from the likes of
Oprah Winfrey, Blake Lively, Katie
Holmes, Ryan Seacrest and Barbra
Streisand.
As delicious as the cupcakes are,
though, equally impressive is
Nelsons unique story. A former
investment banker, Nelson left her
six-figure salary to pursue her pas-
sion. She attended Tante Maries
Professional Pastry Program in San
Francisco. Upon graduating, she
catered cakes from her home
kitchen while her husband deliv-
ered them around town. Still, she
wanted to create an artful and
handcrafted dessert, yet one that
people could eat on a daily basis,
which led her to reinvent and ele-
vate the lowly cupcake. With that,
the idea for Sprinkles was born.
Today, Sprinkles has twelve loca-
tions nationwide, a traveling
Sprinklesmobile - the worlds first
cupcake truck, and sells its cupcake
mixes at over 250 Williams-
Sonoma stores throughout the U.S.
and Canada.
Nelson always knew that if she
were lucky enough to launch a
successful business, a core compo-
nent of Sprinkles mission would
be to give back to the communi-
ties in which it operates. Sprinkles
has donated over $4.5 million in
cash and cupcakes since opening.
Sprinkles also donates daily left-
overs to food banks and con-
tributes 100% of the proceeds
from its charitable cupcake to wor-
thy causes.

NANCY BERNSTEIN
Producer
DreamWorks Animation
Glendale
N
ANCY Bernstein most recently produced DreamWorks Animations
Rise of the Guardians in 2012. Prior to her producing role, Bernstein
served as Head of Production at DreamWorks Animations Glendale
campus, overseeing all aspects of physical production in Glendale.
In February of 2011 after experiencing a series of discomforts, Bernstein was
diagnosed with Stage 3b Colorectal Cancer. In February of 2012, one year to the
date of her original diagnosis, check-up scans revealed seven new tumors show-
ing that the cancer had metastasized to Bernsteins lungs. She was diagnosed
with Stage IV Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, the average life expectancy being two
years. Faced with this news, Bernsteins oncologist recommended that she seek
treatment at the USC Norris Cancer Hospital under the care of Dr. Heinz-Josef
Lenz. It was at this point that Bernstein decided that she needed to help raise
funds and awareness for Colorectal Cancer. After evaluating where money and
time for her cause would be utilized most effectively, she determined that she
would help raise money that directly funded the research at USC Norris, led by
Dr. Lenz for the benefit of Colon and Colorectal Cancer Patients.
With the help and support of DreamWorks Animation SKG, Bernstein has creat-
ed Call To Cure through the Nancy Bernstein Research Program, at USC Norris
Comprehensive Cancer Center. The program is currently raising specific targeted
amounts of money for research programs that need funding. The first program
that received funding is to further research the efficacy of the colon cancer drug
Avastin. Bernstein raised $200,000 to begin the research and her foundation is now
moving onto the next phase of fundraising.
The least funded of all Cancer Charities, Colorectal Cancer is known as the
silent killer, as colonoscopy screenings are not covered under insurance until the
age of 50, and routinely diagnosed too late. Bernstein has become an important
voice in the cause and her efforts have brought new attention and ammunition
to the fight against Colorectal Cancer.

TACEY Gordons remarkable volun-
teer activities began in 1996 when
she was one of the first volunteers
to assist Nancy Lublin in starting up Dress
for Success in New York City. She spent
countless hours creating marketing mate-
rials, establishing volunteer procedures,
setting standards, fundraising for events
and working with the women who need-

she ended her work with Dress for Success
in order to attend law school in 2001, the
organization had grown to more than 50
affiliates in three countries.
Later, Gordon started the first profes-
sional chapter of MBA Women
International in 2007. Women in Los
Angeles flocked to the organization where
Gordon and her Board of Directors created programs, support systems and net-
working events where professional women could meet, collaborate and sup-
port one another in their careers.
Continuing her desire to better her community, Gordon is also a founding
member of Pepperdine Universitys Black Alumni Council. For more than three
years she has collaborated with council members and the university to create
resources for alumni that previously did not exist. She is currently working to
raise $100,000 to endow a scholarship for minority students at Pepperdine.
As if that wasnt enough, Gordon is also a member of the Palos Verdes
chapter of the Links, Incorporated. The mission of the chapter is to empower
those in need in the South Bay and Los Angeles communities to take charge of
their health, education and welfare and bring about positive change that tran-
scends race and socio-economic disparities.

N September of 2010, OMelveny
attorney Gloria Borges was diagnosed
with Stage IV colon cancer, and given
long odds at survival. Her initial prognosis
gave her a year to live two years at most
and promised incredible pain, a steep
decline in health, and a certain and early
death. Undaunted by the challenges that
lay ahead, Borges attacked her disease
head-on and with confidence, and started
the WunderGlo blog, an informative,
description of her treatment experiences
which has now reached over 100,000
unique visitors in over 100 countries.
Sensing that she had the ability to help
people in a meaningful way, Borges in
September of 2011 launched The
WunderGlo Foundation, the only colon
cancer non-profit headquartered in California. Its goal is to support cutting-
edge research for the cure, to promote healthy lifestyle choices for patients and
non-patients alike, and to empower patients. In its first year, The WunderGlo
Foundation raised $100,000 and made its first research grant of $50,000 to the
USC GI Oncology Program in June of 2012.
In February of 2013, Borges took a leave of absence from OMelveny to
embark upon a revolutionary and game-changing initiative. With her oncolo-
gist and armed with a medical team of clinicians and researchers, Borges and
The WunderGlo Foundation launched The Wunder Project. The goal of The
Wunder Project is simple: to raise $250M for cutting-edge, large-scale research
aimed at finding the cure for colon cancer within 8-9 years. Borges is commit-
ted and focused on leading this movement for the cure and changing cancer
treatment and research forever.

MONICA DODI
Co-Founder & Managing Director
The Womens Venture Capital Fund
Los Angeles
M
ONICA Dodi has demonstrated strong leadership skills through-
out her extensive career. Having founded and built four suc-
cessful companies including MTV Europe and AOLs
Entertainment Asylum, she has enjoyed being an entrepreneur
on the cutting edge of the new media landscape.
Dodi is a passionate believer that there are opportunities today for
women to create new businesses with innovative products and services and
that those opportunities have been growing in appeal as career paths and a
chance for women to get excited about their jobs and build personal wealth
and satisfaction. To this end, Dodi most recently co-founded the Womens
Venture Capital Fund (WVCF) based in Los Angeles and Portland to invest
in high potential, yet largely overlooked female entrepreneurs.
The Womens Venture Capital Fund is built upon the simple idea that
women-led companies represent great investment opportunities for venture
investors. Initially surprised to see the sheer lack of venture capital going to
teams with at least one woman in a founding role, Dodi and her business
partner Edith Dorsen decided they would do something proactive to make a
change. Driven by the philosophy that diversity of any kind leads to better
decision making by incorporating different points of view, the Womens
Venture Capital Fund is focused on gender-diverse teams that have proven
market traction for their business. The WVCF is specifically interested in
early stage (post angel), capital efficient companies in the digital media and
sustainability (health, wellness, eco/green) sectors. Dodi and her team see
these sectors are poised for expansive growth, especially on the West Coast.
Women-led technology companiesarestill underrepresented in theranksof
venture-backed companiesgenerally (with 95% of venturecapital going to all male
teams), but thanksto pioneerssuch asDodi and organizationssuch asWVCF,
thosenumbersaresteadily changing for thebetter. TheWVCF hasalready invest-
ed in two women-led digital media companiesthusfar, IvyCorp and Proxio.

L
ISA Adams of LA Closet Design
is one of the Founding
Sponsors of the West Coast
Regional Office of Dress for Success
Worldwide. Dress for Success pro-
motes the economic independence of
disadvantaged women by providing
professional attire, a network of sup-
port and the career development
tools to help women thrive in work
and in life.
When the office was scheduled to
open in Winter 2009, she worked
tirelessly with vendors and sponsors
and donated design services to Dress
for Success to create the offices recep-
tion area and dressing boutique,
where clients of the organization
receive professional attire to support
their journey to gain and maintain
employment. LA Closet Designs
underlying mission statement is to
serve and empower other women, so
Adams designed a space that shifts
the Dress for Success experience for
underprivileged women from receiv-
ing charity to an empowering and
enjoyable boutique shopping
opportunity that provides a fashion-
able foundation for achieving their
goals and aspirations.
In addition to being one of the
founding sponsors of Dress for
Success Worldwide West, Adams
has also lent her creative design and
support to the annual Shop for
Success popup store fundraiser, the
organizations signature shopping
event where 100% of the proceeds
benefit the programs of Dress for
Success Worldwide- West. Her partic-
ipation on the Shop for Success
event committee has set the tone
both visually and aesthetically for
the event space, all while contacting
and sourcing her professional and
personal contacts for product and
other in-kind donations so that
expenses for the event can remain as
low as possible.

AIL Becker is a business-
woman who continues to
drive the public relations
industry forward, and is working to
leave this world a better place than
when she found it. In her role as a
high-ranking executive at Edelman,
she is responsible for the firms
operations in Latin America and
Canada and has strategic oversight
for the U.S. Western Region. In
addition to her day-to-day responsi-
bilities, she goes above and beyond
to ensure Edelman is a great place
to work for all employees and works
to support several Los Angeles-area
organizations.
In 2011, Edelman CEO, Richard
Edelman, asked Becker personally to
chair a new company initiative
known as GWEN, Edelmans Global
Womens Executive Network aimed
at achieving a 50/50 ratio of
women/men in terms of leadership
by 2016. Under Beckers stewardship,
the initiative has made progress in
five areas: Mentorship &
Sponsorship; Education; Policy;
Career Paths; and Recruitment.
Meanwhile, Becker is making
strides on a global level as well In
2011, she wrote, directed and pro-
duced a short documentary with
her 13 year-old son Joshua, which
followed her son (then nine) on a
journey with his grandfather, a
holocaust survivor. Together, the
family traveled to Auschwitz where
the grandfather was imprisoned at
age nine. Narrated by Joshua, the
film captures the essence of that day
in a way that impacts all who wit-
