Shelter Shorts June 2013 SHELTER SHORTS is a monthly newsletter intended to keep Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter

volunteers and supporters connected. With everyones hectic schedules, we know it is often difficult, if not impossible to attend monthly meetings or to work at all of our fundraisers. Everyone is invited to submit articles for the newsletter. To do so, please call Bev at 608-326-2914 or email her at wyalusing2012@gmail.com. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Prairie du Chien City Hall. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. Please use the back door. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 20th. Dog Obedience Classes We have 2 classes left for this session. The last class will be May 29th. I do hope to start another class in June or July. I hope that everyone is having as much fun as I am and also hope that the dog owners are beginning to understand the basics of dog obedience. Again, thanks to Tractor Supply for providing a perfect place to train dogs. Kwik Trip Gas Cards sales from April 19, 2013 through May 16, totaled $3,825.00 for a profit of $382.50. Once again, this months sales were considerably lower than what we were doing when we first started. Please remember, that this is an easy way for those who want to help our very worthwhile cause, but cannot do so because they do not have the time to actively volunteer. Again, I am not asking people to buy something they do not need, but almost everyone uses gas or buys grocery items from Kwik Trip. Most fund raisers require many hours of prep time prior to the event, as well as even more volunteer hours for the event itself. These jobs continue to be done by the same, small, dedicated group of people. Please consider purchasing the Kwik Trip cards (which can be used for in store purchases in addition to gasoline) from Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter. As we move closer to land acquisition, these gas cards will play a very important role as to how soon we start the building process and what type of building we will be able to afford. Please contact Jill, Donna or myself before filling your tank. A quick reply to this email or a phone call will result in delivery of your cards on the same day or the next (Jill 326-4870, Donna 608-379-2112 or myself 326-2914 or 306-1260). Again, thanks to everyone who supports Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter through the purchase of these cards. If you have purchased them in the past, but no longer do so, would you please reconsider doing so again? Bluebird Houses Anyone Mike Kluesner, (Randis husband) has been busy making bluebird houses. If anyone would like to buy one, please reply to this email or call Randi and Mike at 563-873-3839. We are looking for places to market these bird houses. If you have any ideas, please let Bev or Randi know. We hope to sell these at the McGregor Arts and Craft Fair the first 2 weekends in October. All proceeds from the bluebird houses will be donated to RABAS. Nelson True Value Food Stand and Bake Sale was held on will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 10th & 11th. Thanks to Donna, Bob, Diane, Jill, Joe and Randi K for spending 2 miserable days in the cold and wind raising money for the shelter. Thanks also to those who baked. The number of volunteer bakers and baked good for this fund

raiser was the lowest we have ever had. But there was not a big response to the baked goods, so we did have enough to get by on both days. We had $767.75 in sales and $135.39 in donations. I believe Jill said we made a profit of about $750. Rooster Andys Chicken Q at Rickleff Plumbing & Heating will be held on Thursday, May 30 from 11 a.m. 6 p.m. This is a very easy fund raiser all we have to do is show up, work for a few hours and leave no cleanup. Yeah! This year we are going to try two tents one for advance sales and one for walk-up sales. Hopefully this will eliminate the wait for those with advance tickets. This means we will need more volunteers to help. We will need people to deliver the chicken dinners as well as package the dinners. To better estimate the number of dinners we need to order, we would like to sell as many as possible in advance. We have to order a minimum of 300 dinners. If you would like a dinner, please call Bev 326-2914 or Jill 326-4870 (after June 23 rd). If you would like tickets to sell to co-workers, family members and friends, please call Bev this week. Design Homes has decided not to order from us as they did last year. Without their large order, we will need to make this up. Dinners will only be guaranteed to those who have purchased tickets in advance. Last year we made $3000 on this fund raiser. Cost of the chicken dinner is $8 and includes chicken, potato salad, baked beans and a dinner roll. Below is the list of people who have volunteered to work. If I missed your name, please let me know. Please remember that if you said you can work, we are counting on you. List of volunteers: Randy P, Randi K (part of the day), Jill, Bev, Joe, Julie, Betty, Brenda, Diane, Bob, Sue, John, Deb (hopefully). Even if you can help for just part of the day, especially over the lunch and dinner hours that would be greatly appreciated. I think everyone should be there by no later than 10:15. If you are a business owner or are employed in Prairie du Chien, would you please promote the Chicken Q at your work place? For the business owners, the Chicken Q is a great way to treat your employees for a job well done and support Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter at the same time. Pals and Paws For a Cause 5K Dog Walk is scheduled for Saturday, June 29th. Bob and Diane Witt will supply the colored paper for the applications.

They have a small RABAS logo on the left front and a large RABAS logo on the back. Prairie Pool Puppy Paddle Saturday, August 24 Pizza Hut Guest Server Night Both Bev and Jill have been in contact with Cindy from Pizza Hut. Cindy is working on Guest Server Night to benefit RABAS in mid to late September. Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event Mike and Shelly Rider have once again offered us the opportunity for a sizeable donation by hosting the Villa Louis Carriage Classic Wine and Cheese Event on Friday, September 6 th. This will involve 4-5 people at the most Phoneraiser Thanks to everyone who saves their inkjet cartridges and old cell phones for RABAS. Thanks also to Donna Heilmann who takes care of shipping these items to Phoneraiser on a regular basis. Adoptions, Losses, People Looking for a New Pet, Pets in Need of a Forever Home John and Judy Ryan are the happy parents of a new dog Bo. John found a beautiful black lab running along Highway P. He stopped his car and called the dog. It came right to him. John took him home and tried to find the owner, but to no avail. They decided that it was meant to be and that he was a perfect fit for them. They were a bit worried that this great dog did have an owner who was looking for him. And in fact, John and Judy did locate the dogs owner who decided that Bo was much better off and happier with John and Judy than with them. Bo is truly devoted to John and Judy. Congrats to all 3 of you. My good friend and hairdresser, Heather Schroeders 12 year old Pomeranian, Ozzie died recently. Heather and family, you have our sympathy in the loss of your best friend. We all know anyone who says Its just a dog or Its just a cat has never loved or been loved by a dog or a cat. There is a red heeler that as far as I know is still in need of a home. It was found running at large in Cabelas parking lot. According to the person who found her, this dog is a wonderful, loving dog and would make someone a perfect pet and companion. Please let me know if you can help give this deserving dog a forever home. were at the Iowa County Humane Shelter looking for suitable dogs for 4-H dog training Therapy Dog Teams The Family Dog Center has not returned any of the number of phone calls and emails regarding the rescheduling of the evaluation for Therapy Dogs International. This is very disappointing to say the least. But Merilee and Tuck visit Prairie Maison every Monday and I believe Marjie will soon be making regular visits with Emmy. Kathy and Digger continue to visit Praire Maison every Tuesday and Paula and Maggie visit once a week as well. Paula and Maggie have recently started hospital visits. This is a great opportunity for the patients at the hospital. Bev and Nicki will made their debut visit on Tuesday, April 30. As always, it was a very rewarding experience for dogs, patients and me. As soon as my schedule (dog classes, 4-H dog classes, gardening and finishing up the 5k dog walk fund raiser) allows, I hope to get a bit more involved. Bev and both dogs, Vegas and Nicki, visit Wyalusing Academy about twice per month.

Land Acquisition Discussion and meetings continue with the city. Randy P has contacted Aaron Kramer about a $1 payment to hold an option to lease 2.2 acres north of PdC. More on this next month. Pounds Off People and Pooches (POPP) Weekly Dog Walks will begin on Tuesday, May 21st. The dog walk will start at 6 p.m. We meet just east of the Villa Louis and north of the Sculpure Park. There is a parking area there for cars. Please bring water for your dogs as well as bags to pick up after your dogs. Dogs must be leashed and flexileads are discouraged. Good-bye and good luck, Tammy. Congratulations to Tammy, RABAS Secretary, on the sale of your house. Tammy will soon be moving to Missouri to be closer to her sons. Tammy, I enjoyed getting to know you and we appreciate your work as secretary. Welcome aboard, Merilee Pleggenkuhle. With Tammys resignation, Merilee has accepted the nomination for Secretary of RABAS. She was elected unanimously by board members in attendance. Merilee has certainly proven herself as a committed member of RABAS in the few months she has been a member. Merilee, thank you for your acceptance and future commitment as secretary of RABAS.
