5/2/2013 11:52:00 PM Modernity: started in the renaissance in Europe When did globalization of the world start?

When commerce started to connect the globe, trade routes - turbulent time, medieval and feudal systems were disintegrating - Believe and hope that science and technology will better the world - Believe in political systems, and the good of humanity

Post-Modernity - involve a loss of faith in science and rationality - a loss of belief in progress and increased scepticism about any theories that claim to be able to produce a better future. intimacy has its own reflexivity - self identity today is reflexive. Self-identity is based on your preferences and pursuits. - self identity/opinion of ones self in the past was a function of your actions, your family, the place of birth. One was assigned an identity. The evolution of concept of self identity is directly related to modernity/post-modernity Trajectory of self Brands decipher the values we attach to ourselves (Brain identity) Perception of who you are determines your success and satisfaction What happened to the main character in Its a Wonderful World - he abandoned his dreams of being an architect and was planning to move out of town - he recognised his roots are more emotionally important than he imagines, and integrates into a new sense of self - relationship between him and his love interest is authentic and honest What we call relationship today has roots in romanticism "pure relationship" based on the idea that the relationship exists as much as we love each other >> parity and mutual love & respect

How is jules & Jim filmed? Camera movements are larger in this film The film clearly illustrates that Jules, Jim and Catherine have multiple identities and the contradictions Gender stereotypes (A part of the street where men can piss, and men smoke cigars) & gender-free stereotypes (lady dressing up as a guy, promiscuous ladies) Rationality & Emotionality (not wanting to throw away the acid) Manhattan by Woody Allen - montage at the beginning of the film: What is particular about all the images? They are all from dusk to night images. No day images Because NY is a city that is more alive at night, tremendous energy and glamour in the city Similar to Jules et Jim and Its a Wonderful World because they both begin with a voice over to tell the beginning of the story. Manhattan changes the perspective : Protagonist was engaging in a monologue. He wants to control the way he appears through his autobiography. His repeated correction shows that he is unsure about himself. Music (Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue) Emotionally oriented, helps to see the city with the emotions of the author. The jumpcuts that coincides with the rhythms of the music helps to emphasize the storyline.
