Coordinator of Residential Education Student Services Professional II

Purpose of the Position
The Coordinator of Residential Education (CRE) is a live-in position responsible for the daily oversight of the housing and residential education program within their assigned village. This oversight includes development and maintenance of an engaged community, which provides a positive and holistic educational experience for a diverse group of students.

Position Description
Duties & Responsibilities The CRE serves as the lead staff member responsible for the daily operation of an assigned village housing area of over 450 students; living area responsibilities may include living areas on the main campus, in University Glen, and/or in off-campus housing locations. Responds to daily requests for information and assistance from staff, residents, and other interested parties. Recommends solutions to problems and changes in program procedures to the Associate Director for Residential Education (ADRE). Establishes a positive community atmosphere within assigned living areas promoting responsible citizenship and the academic and personal development of students. Resolves conflicts and encourages communication among staff and residents. Cultivates effective and mutually supportive working relationships with members of the campus community. When appropriate, provides for the promotion of Housing and Residential Education (HRE) events throughout the campus, and represents HRE at university events. Serves on divisional and campus committees as needed. Supervises one Assistant Coordinator of Residential Education (ACRE), a full-time position that supervises Resident Assistants (RA) and assists with the coordination and oversight of the living area(s). The CRE assists with the recruitment, training, and evaluation of the ACRE. The CRE provides direction, leadership, and assures successful implementation of the CREs special assignment of either the First-Year Transition Initiatives or the Academic Support Resources program. The CRE provides leadership training for all student staff, residents and volunteers. Assist with the recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of the Senior Community Advisors (SCA), a student supervisor position which oversees some RAs. Assists with the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of the RA and Desk Assistant (DA) staff. Supervises the work and development of up to 3 SCAs, and 14 RAs. Plans, implements, and assess summer and winter SCA and RA training programs. Collaborates within the division, with other campuses, and with community entities to provide an excellent RA program. Provide for on-going training and performance review through formal and informal training sessions and regular individual meetings. The CRE liaises with other staff, both within HRE and outside the department, to respond to student needs as appropriate. Meets with students on a regular basis to address behavioral, adjustment, roommate, and other concerns. Requests assistance and provides referrals, as appropriate. Advises the RAs in the planning, implementation, execution, and assessment of co-curricular programs as outlined in the educational event planning model. Builds upon existing signature programs and collaborates with other departments in the division and other staff and faculty throughout the University to provide programs that meet student needs. Provides for the promotion of campus events within their assigned living area. Educates residents regarding their rights and responsibilities as a member of the campus and residential community. Reviews incident reports and assists the ADRE with timely and appropriate resolution of student conduct issues. Works within the guidelines of the Six-Step Disciplinary Process and the philosophy of discipline with an emphasis on educational and developmental outcomes. Meets with students to discuss violations and delivers sanctions up through step five of our six-step process. Provides reports to the ADRE, the Executive Director of HRE, the Vice President Student Affairs, and the Dean of Students. Interprets and explains HRE standards, expectations, procedures, and the developmental/ educational goals of the conduct process to RAs and residents.

Advises SCA in facilitation of the student Community Resolution (CR) Team. The CR Team serves as a peer-review body for low-level conduct violations within HRE. The CRE plans and implements the CR Team training and updates manuals, forms, and resources utilized by the CR Team. Assists in the coordination of facility maintenance work through facilitating access to apartments or suites, reporting problems to the Associated Director for Administration and Operations, and coordinating the check-out process for students wherein a room condition is documented and from which students may be assessed charges for cleaning or repair. Provides assistance on an as-needed basis during summer months to the Coordinator for Student Housing Conferences in the form of customer service, emergency response, and on-call duty support for conference clients. Assumes day, evening, holiday, and weekend on-call responsibilities in rotation with other HRE staff. Provides on-call services including crisis and emergency response, facility maintenance, direction and support for SCAs and RAs, and conflict resolution for all members of the residential facilities. Works closely with University Police Officers in the immediate response and resolution of student conduct or health concerns. Provides appropriate judicial, counseling, and health center referrals. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
Bachelors degree is required. Masters degree and experience as a graduate/assistant resident director or resident director are strongly preferred. Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of group dynamics and multicultural issues, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student, staff and leadership development; working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other departmental and university-wide goals; solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, and students; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations; the ability to acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of the Housing and Residential Education area. As a condition of employment, this position may require a background check. The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Equipment used in the performance of this assignment includes a computer with MS windows operating system, printers, copy machines, artistic tools, and recreation equipment. This position requires moving from one office location to another, and moving to and from various campus locations. May be required to lift loads of up to 40 lbs. More than 50% of normal work hours will occur within a typical office environment.
