Apart from standards for bathing waters and bivalve aquaculture waters, there are no general microbiological standards applicable to seawaters to help decide if bacterial pollution is within acceptable ranges. This study represents an attempt towards the issue of comparing the susceptibility of different marine invertebrates subjected to polluted seawater with a high microbial contamination. We explored the survival rates and the microbiological accumulation of mollusc bivalves, echinoderms and crustaceans species exposed to sewage-polluted seawaters. Microbiological analyses were performed on the polluted seawater and on the homogenates of exposed and unexposed specimens. Culturable bacteria (22 C and 37 C) and microbial pollution indicators (total coliforms, Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) were measured. When exposed to the sewage-polluted seawater, the examined invertebrates showed different survival rates. In the filter feeders, bacterial densities at 22 C and 37 C rose after 96 h of exposure to sewage. The highest concentrations of total coliforms and intestinal enterococci were found in exposed bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. The concentrations of bacteria growing at 37 C were lower in the exposed deposit feeders compared to the polluted seawater. Some yeasts were absent in several exposed species although these yeasts were present in the polluted seawater. Our data suggest that the examined filter feeders, given their capability to survive and accumulate bacteria, may counteract the effects of sewage and restore seawater quality. 2012 Springer-Verlag. We examined the accumulation of bacteria in the Demospongiae (Hymeniacidon perlevis). Analyses were performed on homogenates from unstarved and starved sponges in seawater from their sampling site (the Ionian Sea). Culturable heterotrophic bacteria (22C), total culturable bacteria (37C) and vibrios densities were measured on marine agar 2216, plate count agar and TCBS agar, respectively. Total and fecal coliforms, as well as fecal streptococci, were determined by the most probable number method (MPN). H. perlevis was able to accumulate all of the six microbiological groups. Bacterial groups differed in their resistance to digestion by H. perlevis. Our data suggest that H. perlevis may accumulate, remediate and metabolize bacteria and that they may be employed as a useful bioindicator and bioremediator. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Paralytic shellfish toxin concentration and cell density changes in Pyrodinium bahamense - Noctiluca scintillans feeding experiments Azanza, R.V., Cruz, L.J., Cario, F.A., Blanco, A.G., Butardo Jr., V.M. 2010. Toxicon 55 (5) , pp. 1017-1023; Azanza, R.V.a , Cruz, L.J.a, Cario, F.A.b, Blanco, A.G.a, Butardo Jr., V.M.a a The Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City 1101, Philippines b Institute of Chemistry, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines View references (15) Abstract For the first time the potential of Noctiluca scintillans, a non-toxic mixotrophic dinoflagellate, in bioconverting and/or excreting saxitoxin has been illustrated, thus contributing to the limited knowledge on the aspects of toxin pathways in the food chain/web and predator-prey preferences. Noctiluca growth rate increased with higher Pyrodinium concentration but the ratio of Noctiluca to Pyrodinium should at least be 1:250 cells per mL. Noctiluca fed with Pyrodinium alone was found to decrease in number suggesting that the nutrients from this prey were insufficient. This was confirmed by the improved cell density of Noctiluca upon addition of 0.01% casitone to the Pyrodinium-fed Noctiluca. The alternative prey (Gymnodinium sanguineum) slowed down the grazing impact of Noctiluca on Pyrodinium. Noctiluca depleted Gymnodinium earlier than Pyrodinium showing preference over a prey with less saxitoxin. After the feeding experiments, total saxitoxin levels decreased to 72% in the Noctiluca-Pyrodinium setup whereas no saxitoxin was detected in the Noctiluca culture fed with Pyrodinium and G. sanguineum. It is possible that Gymnodinium can provide some nutrients needed to make Noctiluca more efficient in bioconverting saxitoxin. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Author keywords

The results showed that seasonal difference of self-purification of permanganate index, total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH 4 +-N), nitrate (NO 3 --N), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll (Chl-a) in small shallow lakes were remarkable. Effects of self-purification were better in spring and winter, and were worse in summer by NH 4 +-N and NO 3 --N and in autumn by TP and Chl-a. Organic pollution was light, TN and TP pollution were seriously in four seasons. Concentrations of TN and TP brought a well condition to algae growth, and lakes were eutrification easily by the limiting factor of phosphorus. Concentrations of Chl-a were showed that lakes were eutrophic in summer or autumn and mesotrophic in winter or spring. Growth and blooms of phytoplankton impacted water quality and self-purification of lakes. Species and quantity of aquatic plants were the main factors to affect the change of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO), and loss of fertilizer and domestic wastewater were the main reasons for high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in lakes. Organic nitrogen was the main portion of TN by using excessive organic fertilizer in summer, NO 3 --N was the main portion in other seasons. The principal component analysis result showed that the three principal components of self-purification ability were phytoplankton factor (water temperature, pH, permanganate index and Chl-a), farm drainage factor (pH, DO and TN), nutrient factor (TN and TP). The cluster analysis result showed that the water quality of four seasons in 11 sampling sites of three lakes could be divided into two categories: first, in spring, autumn and winter; second, in summer. This was caused by the temperature changes and agricultural drainage. Water temperature and pH were used to calculate the concentrations of permanganate index, TN, TP, Chl-a by linear equations, which improved the quick prediction ability in locale.

8 Impact of dam construction on water quality and water self-purification capacity of the Lancang River, China Wei, G.L., Yang, Z.F., Cui, B.S., Li, B., Chen, H., Bai, J.-H., Dong, S.K. 2009. dam segment and downstream flowing segment. The long-term series of water quality and river flow data over 20 years were analyzed in order to study the impact of dam construction and operation on water quality and water self-purification capacity of these different river segments. From pre-dam period to the first 7 years after Manwan Dam had been accomplished, the water quality of Manwan Reservoir became worse due to the accumulation of pollutants, and then to the next 5 years the water quality became better in virtue of the water self-purification of the reservoir. The cooperative operation of Manwan and Dachaoshan Dam had cumulatively positive impacts on water quality of their belowdam segment but no impacts on that of downstream flowing segment. From pre-dam period to the first 7 years after the closure of Manwan Dam, the water self-purification capacity of Xiaowan-Manwan segment for BOD5, CODMn and NH3N decreased. Also, the water self-purification capacity of ManwanDachaoshan segment for BOD5 and CODMn decreased but for NH3-N increased. However, the water self-purification capacity of Jinghong-Ganlanba segment changed contrary to Manwan-Dachaoshan segment. In general, the construction of Manwan Dam negatively affected the water self-purification capacity of reservoir and below-dam segment but impose little impact on that of downstream flowing segment. This study suggested that it is necessary to pay attention to the effect of complicated temporal and spatial characteristics of dam on aquatic ecosystem. Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2008. The experience was carried out under laboratory conditions, by using natural seawater collected from the sponge environment. The study demonstrates a high efficiency of the sponge in removing bacteria. Bacterial concentration significantly decreases in presence of the sponge, with a marked drop after 2 h from the start of the experience. The maximum clearance rate was 210 ml h -1 g -1 DW at 60 min. Retention efficiency reached the highest value of 61% at 120 min. The bacterial density removed by the S. officinalis filtering activity was 12.31.810 4 cells ml -1 corresponding to a biomass of about 11.71.4 g C l -1. The sponge fed preferentially large- and medium-size bacteria, whereas the small ones are fed after the removal of the largest size categories. The results obtained suggest that S. offcinalis is a suitable species for marine environmental bioremediation. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Water quality of effluent-dominated ecosystems: Ecotoxicological, hydrological, and management considerations Brooks, B.W., Riley, T.M., Taylor, R.D. 2006. Hydrobiologia 556 (1) , pp. 365-379. Because effluent-dominated and dependent water bodies have previously received limited scientific study, we reviewed select contemporary topics associated with water quality of ephemeral streams receiving effluent flows. Our findings indicate that these ecosystems present numerous challenges to aquatic scientists and water resources managers, including: 1) appropriate ecosystems or upstream conditions used reference sites in biomonitoring are difficult to locate or do not exist; 2) water quality criteria, particularly for metals, are dramatically influenced by unique site-specific stream and land use conditions; 3) effluent-dominated streams represent worse-case scenarios for evaluating and predicting aquatic responses to emerging contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals and personal care products); 4) low-flow and drought conditions often preclude effective biomonitoring and water quality interpretation, or skew ambient assessment results; 5) chemical-physical water quality parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature) are dramatically altered by effluent and stormwater characteristics; and 6) beneficial reuse of reclaimed effluent waters potentially conflict with sustainability of ecological integrity. Subsequently, we recommend several water quality research priorities for effluentdominated water bodies. Springer 2006. During the last fifteen years, the lake has shown significant signs of degradation, such as disturbance of its aquifer bed, algal blooms, fish mass mortalities, and the

transformation of its trophic status from an oligotrophic to a meso-trophic and, even, an eutrophic one. Such a transformation has an additional impact on terrestrial, avian and aquatic fauna, with alteration in species' composition, and a considerable decline in local fisheries and tourism. This study focused on investigating the role that gully Pentavrisos has on the physicochemical water quality status of Lake Vegoritis. Most parameters inside the lake (nitrates 0.55-1.95 mg.l-1, nitrites 0.008-0.031 mg.l-1, ammonia 0.011-0.158 mg.l-1) indicate the existence of a natural purification process occurring between the sites of gully Pentavrisos, receiving the treated/untreated effluents, and the final recipient of those effluents, Lake Vegoritis. Suggested mitigation measures for the restoration of the lake and the management of the respective aquifer bed, mainly consist of rationalization of water consumption for irrigation purposes, recycling of industrial effluent water, establishment of depuration plants for the biological treatment of industrial and urban waste, appropriate planning and demarcation of land-use in the littoral areas of the lake, and qualitative upgrade of Pentavrisos gully. by PSP Volume 14 - No 12a. 2005.
