Pender United Methodist Church Council Meeting March 20, 2013

Worship and Reflection KT Tarro called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm and led the group in worship and reflection, citing John 16:23. Holy Spirit Moment Meredith Kinerney commented that the Leadership session this past Saturday was awesome and caused her to think about what God wants us to do. The Visitation Team is available to implement assistance where needed, those individuals who need assistance just need to be identified. It was suggested that publicizing the Visitation Teams mission in the bulletin and mass e-mail to church members would be one way to find out who needs assistance. Celebration Minutes Doug Gaskell commented that the Leadership session was very encouraging as it demonstrated how far we have come in the past 5 years. We are doing much better in crossing cluster boundaries. KT felt the clusters and ministries are planning better, coordinating events among the various ministries where needed, and getting events recorded on the church and website calendars. John Amos reported that Dave Shuping attended an Area meeting of Mission Committee leaders at Centreville Presbyterian Church for a discussion on what is being done for short term and long term mission trips. Prayerful Consideration of Church Matters: Review of Upcoming Ministry Events (6-3-1) (KT Tarro) KT reviewed the various events listed on the calendar for September, June, and April. Doug Gaskell and John Amos will meet separately to discuss the format for the September 8 Kick Off Sunday. An interactive idea will be developed and shared with the other clusters so that each cluster can develop a similar format. Ideas for possible activities were explored. The Brazil mission trip needs to be added to the calendar for June. The United Methodist Men are sponsoring the Easter Sunrise Breakfast. The agenda for the monthly mens meeting on March 27 is being finalized and guest speaker, Brad Smith of Men of Valor International has been scheduled. Kay Creel, Military Ministry Leader, will be attending a fundraiser dinner for the Wounded Warriors Project in May. She has also been networking with other military organizations and information will be published in future bulletins and emails.

Leaders were encouraged to provide the church office with the Resource Request Form for any events that are being planned so that the event can be posted on the church calendar.

Recognition Program (Meredith Kinerney) Background: At Januarys Council meeting, Butch Kinerney discussed a recognition ceremony held at an out of state church he attended. An individual who did something special that was above and beyond what was normally expected is recognized during the worship service and presented with a red rose. He suggested a similar program be started at Pender. Meredith volunteered to lead this program and discussed how it might operate: 1. The suggested name for Penders program is Hands and Feet Recognition. 2. During one Sunday each month, a volunteer or group of volunteers will be recognized. For an activity such as the hypothermia center, the entire group will be recognized rather than a single individual. 3. On alternating months, the recognition will be based on events held at Pender and for events held outside of Pender. 4. A committee will be established to nominate the volunteer/group. 5. Five minutes will be set aside during the worship service to recognize the volunteer/group. 6. A lapel pin or prayer coin may be provided to the volunteer/group. 7. This program differs from the Man or Woman of the Year Awards as the recognition will be for specific events whereas the Man or Woman of the Year Awards recognizes a full year of activities. 8. Volunteers may only receive this designation once every 2 years. 9. Recognition serves to highlight the various jobs done at Pender. The event does not have to be grand; it can be routine or something done behind the scenes. The event should also be recent. Following suggestions were offered: 1. Guidelines should be developed on how the recipients will be selected (Doug Gaskells suggestion). 2. Rather than call the recognition an award, Dave Cacner suggested the term, featured volunteer. 3. Rather than ask individual or group to come forward during the service, Rev. Kevin suggested a poster with a picture and reason for the recognition. The poster could be placed in narthex on an easel. Information could also be placed in the bulletin or in mass e-mail to the congregation. 4. A quarterly luncheon could be held to recognize all volunteers (Dave Cacners suggestion). Important Upcoming Dates/Reminders April 17, 2013, 7:30 pm next Council meeting Closing and Benediction: Pastor Kenny closed the meeting with prayer at 8:25 pm. Respectfully submitted, Mary Ann Hinkle Recording Steward
