103A University House 816-235-5569 November 14, 2011 To Whom It May Concern: I am very pleased to offer my complete support

for Lauren Gepford in her quest to build a career in public policy formation. I came to know Ms. Gepford through her work in my course, Press Politics and Public Policy. I demand critical thinking, analysis, and leadership development in this course, and Ms. Gepford may very well be the best and brightest student I have had in the 19 years since I stole (with his blessing) the concept and application of this course from Marvin Kalb during my time at the Harvard Kennedy School in 1992-93. Ms. Gepford delivered all three of the above qualities better than anyone else. Her classroom comments and arguments were always on the mark; her examination answers and papers were consistently incisive and illuminating. She always went beyond what was asked or expected. She was a teachers delight. During this time she also worked hard in politics and policy formation. Her resume undoubtedly speaks toward those activities, so I will not repeat them here. But you should know that I have heard from independent sources that those who employed her were extremely pleased with her intelligence, knowledge and performance. Ms. Gepford blends keen intelligence with personal qualities of curiosity, empathy and understanding. She consistently exhibited the ability to choose a course and follow it without doubts and second-guessing. I have no doubt at all that she will employ all that in her professional life as well. Most of all, Ms. Gepford has the good judgment and maturity to function well in the workplace. Many, as you know, do not. Clearly I believe in this young woman. I know she will be an exceptional asset to you. Give her a chance. You will be glad you did. Sincerely,

Robert B. Unger Professor, Urban Journalism
