Tenth GHRSST Science Team Meeting, Santa Rosa, California, USA 1-5th June 2009

Welcome note
Hello: ...and welcome to Santa Rosa California USA and the 10 th GHRSST Science Team meeting! Now that the GHRSST Pilot Project has completed its work and the new Group for High Resolution SST (GHRSST) has been formed, this meeting provides an important opportunity to critically review where the GHRSST activity must focus its effort for the future benefit of the stakeholders that have invested in the project to date. The outputs of this meeting will provide the basis on which GHRSST will move forward. The meeting format is once again biased toward plenary discussion using keynote talks to identify issues. This year we also plan to use poster sessions to reserve more time for breakout discussions. We will use breakout groups to focus the attention of world expertise within the GHRSST TAG and WG and try to limit the number of parallel sessions. Breakouts can be difficult to report and the teams should try and support breakout chairs and their rapporteur with sufficient information to provide a report fit for the Workshop proceedings. This format has worked exceptionally well during previous GHRSST workshops and please come prepared with slides, questions and practical solutions that can be incorporated into GHRSST plans and specifications. As members of the international Science Team of GHRSST we all have an obligation to serve the RDAC and GDAC projects with a clear roadmap, based on our collective scientific judgment and consensus opinion to guide and nurture a globally integrated and sustainable high resolution SST operational system for the benefit of all. On behalf of the GHRSST Science Team I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chelle Gentemann and the Remote Sensing Systems team for all of their help and support in Hosting and preparing this workshop. Thanks also to all the sponsors and you, the participants, who make these important events possible. I thank each of you for your contributions, support and dedication to GHRSST and I look forward to meeting you all once again in the United States for a productive and stimulating workshop.

Craig Donlon (Chair of the GHRSST Science Team)

4 Guidelines for session leaders

Breakout session Chairs are responsible for coordinating presentations and a local agenda for their session.

4.1 Breakout Session Chairs

Each breakout Session chair is responsible for: Preparing the breakout session in advance in order to focus on the key issues for GHRSST (in the form of questions to be answered and issues to be resolved) Arranging short overview presentations and timetabling these to allow as much discussion as possible Reporting the session back to plenary on Wednesday morning Reporting the session formerly (based on notes from the Rapporteur) as part of the Science Team proceedings in a written summary report to be delivered by Thursday Evening before you leave the ST meeting (otherwise experience shows you might not do it at all!)

Breakout sessions are only as good as the reports and plenary presentations that are generated and I urge you to take this part of the breakout session seriously.

4.2 Session Chairs

The main tasks of a session chair are to briefly introduce each speaker, keep the presentations to the time allowed, and to lead/moderate the discussion after each presentation. The plenary sessions are your domain and please try to use the General discussion questions above as a guide. Finally, the chair should work closely with the rapporteur to prepare a short summary of the session . The report should be of a standard suitable for publication in the Workshop proceedings including appropriate figures and text concluding with the breakout session recommendations.

4.3 Rapporteurs
The purpose of the rapporteurs is to capture important information during the session for the follow-up of the workshop by the GHRSST-PO and Science Team . The rapporteur will be expected to present their reports to the plenary session on Friday afternoon, as a basis for the general discussion and review of the workshop, and for the preparation of conclusions and recommendations for future actions within GHRSST. In preparing your rapporteur reports, you should avoid making lengthy summaries of the presentations and discussions. Please try to concentrate on issues which relate directly to the objectives of the workshop, the mandate of GHRSST and the future development of GHRSST ocean products and services. Your presentation should be short and provide a general overview of the main session outcomes/conclusions rather than a regurgitation of each presentation made. In order to generate a representative report of the meeting, please can you provide the GHRSST-PO with a soft copy of your report by the end of the meeting: this is particularly important for the breakout sessions as the report relies completely on these inputs what you provide will constitute the final proceedings for these sessions so please, capture as much information as you can. Your inputs will be used as the basis for the conclusions of the 10th Workshop proceedings.

AVHRR HRPT meeting

There will be a meeting for those interested in the reprocessing of AVHRR HRPT and/or LAC data at the Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel, where the 10th GHRSST Science Team Meeting is being held. The focus of this meeting is to identify groups that would like to participate in a global HRPT and LAC reprocessing effort and how these efforts might be coordinated. We will not discuss in any detail improvements to retrieval algorithms, cloud screening techniques, or error estimation - all of which are likely to be discussed in course during the Science Team meeting itself. If you are interested, please contact Ken Casey using kenneth.casey@noaa.gov so that we have an idea for the size of the room needed. Informal dinner in Santa Rosa, meet in the Hyatt Hotel Foyer.

The session will focus on reference data sources, match-up processing and SSES. It will be run as a series of topics, for which a topic leader will give a presentation as way of an introduction to the topic, highlighting the key issues and questions for discussion. This will then be followed by an open discussion with some additional contributed talks. Each additional contribution is allocated a maximum time of 7 minutes, which

There may be a couple of additional contributions, so please ensure your caffeine levels are topped up at lunch time as you might not get your usual afternoon fix! Agenda 14:00 14:10: 14:10 14:25: 14:25 15:00: Introduction and objectives for the session (G Corlett) Topic 1: Buoys and match-up processing (G Corlett) Open discussion including contributions from S Eastwood (GHRSST MDB monitoring) J-F Pioll (GHRSST MDB developments) & C Merchant (ARC validation) Topic 2: Ship-based radiometry (P Minnett) Open discussion including contribution from W Wimmer (ISAR validation & MDB matchup limits) Topic 3: Other reference sources (P Le Borgne) Open discussion including contribution from C Gentemann (Issues for microwave sensors) Topic 4: Single Sensor Error statistics (P Le Borgne) Open discussion including contributions from C Merchant (Modelled SSES) and Bob Evans (MODIS improvements) Wrap-up actions and future plans (G Corlett).

Goal 1: Collect updates on the SST reanalysis / reprocessing activities from around the world. To achieve this goal, I am requesting a one-slide summary (see below for details) from everyone in advance of the meeting regarding their reanalysisrelated projects and activities. We won't spend time presenting all of them (like we did last year). Instead, I'll compile them into a "booklet" (a single collection on a CD), representing a status summary of the current state of global efforts. This booklet will be the deliverable for this goal. During the breakout, I will provide an overview of the current status, compare it to where we where last year to give us a sense for the progress being made, and perhaps ask for some more detailed explanations. Goal 2: Access and Inter-comparison Tools and Requirements. For this goal, I ask each of you to consider if the existing suite of inter-comparison tools such as the GHRSST Multi-Product Ensemble (GMPE, http://www.ghrsst-pp.org/Todays-global-SST.html), GCOS Inter-comparison site (http://ghrsst.nodc.noaa.gov/intercomp.html), and the HR-DDS (http://www.hrdds.org) systems meet our reanalysis needs. What about the data access systems at the Global Data Assembly Center (GDAC, http://ghrsst.jpl.nasa.gov) and Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility (LTSRF, http://ghrsst.nodc.noaa.gov)? What are they doing right? How can they be improved? Are there other tools that should be developed? The deliverable for this goal will be a clear set of requirements and recommendations for improved GHRSST data access and inter-comparison tools. To support this goal, I will ask each of you with an interest to submit your requirements and recommendations (see below for details). Please don't forget to include not just criticisms but also compliments if they are warranted! Goal 3: Identify priority efforts for the coming year(s). Based on what we've learned from the GCOS intercomparions, tool assessments, recent work looking carefully into "grid vs. analysis" resolution, lessons from the GMPE, and perhaps some of the large reprocessing efforts (Pathfinder, (A)ATSR Reanalysis for Climate, others?), what should be the priority efforts be for the coming year(s)? The deliverable for this goal will be "The GHRSST Reanalysis Priority List of Actions". Importantly, I'd like this process of reviewing/discussing what we've learned in the last year to bring to light possibly hidden or forgotten issues. To support this goal, everyone with an interest is asked to submit critical focus areas for a set of internationally coordinated

Final remarks The scope of topics within STVAL is already quite large and there are other topics that we might want to consider including calibration, retrieval algorithms and cloud screening. Consequently, we need to consider an STVAL working meeting in the future. Please give some thought to holding an STVAL working meeting, as well as how these additional topics should be addressed within GHRSST.

Reviewing the ISO metadata model.

The goal is to complete the working model for L2P/L3P/L4 to be completed by Friday 5th June with the UML diagrams that will form the engineering foundation for the metadata records. The outline of the session will be: Presentation by on some use cases where current model is failing or lacking (15 min) Review the current UMLs and a working L2P XML example. (30 minutes) Working session to modify, add, refine the metadata model

BG-6: GDS TAG Reviewing and accepting the GDS 2.0 The goal of this session is to review and accept the current GDS 2.0 documentation and endorse its application within the GHRSST R/GTS. It is expected that if you attend this session you will have read and are familiar with the GDS2.0 documentation prior to the session which is available at https://www.ghrsst.org/documents.htm? mode=viewDocument&parent=444. Please consider these carefully as one adopted, changes must be made through a controlled change procedure which has typically required endorsement by the GHRSST Science Team and can be a lengthy process. Where you raise problems and issues please come prepared with solutions and options so that the documents can be accepted. The session will be a working session and small groups will be expected to work to solve issues and problems as they arise. 09:00 Introduction: The status of GDS2.0 and aim of the session (Gentemann/Donlon) 09:20 Discussion of Priorities and issues. 09:30 Summary review and acceptance of each GDS-2.0 document with major changes reported in summary overview presentations. Inputs, comments and requested changes from the ST accepted before and during the session. Each document will be taken in turn as follows: L2P format specification L3 format specification L4 format specification GHRSST filename specifications GMPE format specification HRDDS format specification CF Conventions GHRSST User Manual

All the relevant ISO metadata documentation and current UML diagrams can be found at: https://www.ghrsst.org/GHRSST-PP-XML-TechnicalAdvisory-Group-(XML-TAG).html These will form the basis of our discussions and working session for the XML breakout group.
