Statement of Purpose

I , Jaspal Singh , am applying for PhD program in your esteemed institute. I believe that working towards PhD in your institute will be a mutually rewarding experience for me and the institute. I shall be benefitted by the infrastructure of your institute, while I shall be able to contribute towards the development of knowledge base of the institute. I consider myself to be a hard worker with above average intelligence and a keen sense of observation. My ambitions are also very high in tune with the motto of the institute. I am confident that I can keep up with the stringent standards and expectations of the institute and emerge with some real quality work. If given a chance, I shall make the authorities and faculty of the institute proud by producing some very good research material. To substantiate my claims I have mentioned some of my achievements below. I have done M.Sc (physics) from Meerut University in 2009. I chose physics because; I had been attracted to this area from high school. Physics is my favorite subject .I got highest marks in physics in SSC as well as HSC. In 2010 I got selected in Guru Gobind Singh Inderprastha University (GGSIPU) for M-Tech (Nanoscience & Technology) and in July 2012 I successfully completed the M-Tech. Nanotechnology since it combines Biology, Chemistry and Physics I felt challenged initially, but I could surpass the hurdles in a short period of time. In GGSIPU I got opportunities to access the advanced experiments and learned many research methods. For example I have learned Sol-gel method, Micro-emulsion method, hydrothermal method and reduction method. Also I did synthesis and characterization of different nano material like ZnO, NiO, CuO, ZnS, TiO2/ CdS , Core/shell etc. The characterization was done using different equipment like X-ray diffraction, UV visible Spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy, Electrometer, Sun simulator, Scanning Electron Microscopy Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. I am adept on handling some equipments like X-ray diffraction, UV visible Spectroscopy, Electrometer, Sun simulator, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy etc. I have giving presentation on Atomic force microscope, Dye sensitize Solar cell, Organic L.E.Ds Also I have the knowledge of Matlab7.2, Origin8.5. . Research background Some of the projects undertaken during M.Tech and MSc.:1) Synthesis of ZnO-CuO nanocomposite for the photocatalytic and DSSC application. 2) Synthesis of Ag@TiO2 nanocomposite for the photocatalytic application. 3) Effect of flower extracts on the photoconducting properties of TiO2. in M-Tech (June-July 2011) 4) Preparation of CdS/TiO2 core/shell nanoparticles for the photovoltaic application in M-Tech (octNov2011) 5) Study the Characteristics of Complementary-symmetric Amplifier in M.Sc (2009) Attending the conference NanoConclave at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University 2010 Giving poser presentation on my major and minor project at IIT Mandi NSNT-2012. Area of Specialisation:Solar cell, Sensors .Plasmonic, Optoelectronic devices, Photo-catalysis. Future Research Plan:My aim is to develop high potential nanomaterial sensors which can sense minor activities in our environment. Nano Materials which can absorb or respond to light of different wavelengths, hence to

improve the efficiency of solar cells. Nano Material which can be used as gas sensors of very high sensitivity, almost in the range of parts per billion. I am aware the Indian Institute of Technology () is a vibrant and exciting institute known for its high standards of teaching and supportive atmosphere for studies and research. It is my desire to obtain the best possible learning experience, knowledge and necessary skills that I need to fulfill the goals in my life. I strongly believe that my decision to go for PhD from your institute will turn out to be a landmark decision in my life. Hope that you may consider my candidature and oblige.
