Township draws attention to Relay for Life
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Celebrate. Remember. Fight
Back is the motto that sur-
rounds the national efforts of
Relay for Life a community
fundraiser geared toward remem-
bering, honoring and spreading
awareness about the lives lost and
saved from cancer.
Voorhees declared May as
Paint the Town Purple Month in
the hopes of drawing attention to
the annual Relay for Life at East-
ern Regional High School. Ac-
cording to Relay for Life commu-
nity representative Dianna
Coscette, purple represents all
forms of cancer.
She said the hope is to get
Voorhees businesses involved in
promoting the event.
Relay for Live of Voorhees
chair Jeannette Golden said this
is the second year the event is
being held in Voorhees and the
first of the townships declara-
tion.
It is quite difficult getting peo-
ple involved, she said.
Golden and Coscette are hop-
ing awareness will spread if busi-
nesses and organizations partici-
pate in painting the town pur-
ple. Coscette said businesses
could do anything from decorat-
ing the outside of shops in purple
or hanging event-related posters
or signs.

Paws and Feet Run 5K Race
and Doggie Fun Day May 18
The Animal Welfare Associa-
tions annual Paws and Feet Run
5K Race and Doggie Fun Day is
set! Its time for dogs to grab their
best friends and join us on Satur-
day, May 18, at Cooper River Park
in Cherry Hill.
The AWA counts on the money
raised from the event to provide
shelter and medical care to more
than 2,000 homeless dogs and cats
AWA adopts out each year.
Last year, animal lovers and
members of the community help
raise $72,000 for the animals mak-
ing it the highest grossing event
in AWA history.
This year, the goal is set for
$100k, Maria Clarke, AWAs
Events and Business Relations
manager said.
Paws and Feet is growing in
scope and participation every
year with hundreds of runners
and walkers coming out to sup-
port the mission of the AWA. We
need your help to reach our
goal.
After the race/walk, fundrais-
ing teams can participate in the
AWA Games while others can
grab a bite to eat, participate in
doggie fun activities, or take a
stroll through Vendor Valley
for some pet-related shopping
and view adoptable animals from
non-profit animal shelters and
rescue groups in Rescue Lane.
There will also be a series of
educational workshops, includ-
ing an ER preparedness segment
provided by Red Bank Veterinary
Hospital.
Others helping bark up the
event are The Jersey Disc Devils
and their High Flying K-9 Ath-
please see ANIMAL, page 5
Golden said she would try to
get the schools involved in the
event next year, taking what is
now small and growing it in
Voorhees.
Last year, the event attracted
approximately 200 participants
and raised $22,000. To date, 79 peo-
ple have signed up to attend, rais-
ing $19,507.
We work all year long to get
teams together, Golden said,
adding people often mistake the
event as a race. A lot of people
start teams around a survivor or
in memory of someone who has
lost a battle with cancer. Thats
the basis of the relay.
According to Golden, each
team raises money by hosting
fundraising events.
Jeff Jaskol and his wife, Stacey,
raised $14,975 under their Al
Jaskol Memorial team. Golden
said this is the first year the
Jaskol family is participating,
and they hosted an at-home
fundraiser to raise the funds.
Survivors, supporters, family
and friends will gather, sharing
one thing in common.
The event will begin with a
Survivors Lap, followed by 12
hours of games and events, food,
fundraising, celebration and re-
membrance.
But the most touching experi-
ence is at dusk.
Golden said there is a lumi-
naire ceremony, where hundreds
of white bags with candles are
lined up. The line of bags glows
as the sun sets and the names on
the side of each bag stand out as a
reminder of the lives lost and
those who survived.
My kids always get a lumi-
nary for me, said Golden, who is
a cancer survivor. A lot of us in-
volved are survivors.
According to the American
Cancer Society, approximately
13.7 million Americans, both now
cancer-free or battling cancer, are
living as of Jan. 1, 2012. Approxi-
mately 1.6 million new cases of
cancer are diagnosed, and 1,600
people die of cancer every year.
If anybody didnt understand
what the Relay for Life is at that
very moment, when they pass the
bag, or the luminary of their
loved one, and all of you see the
glow of the bags, there is such an
emotional pull, Golden said.
Relay for Life at Eastern Re-
gional High School is from May 31
at 6 p.m. to June 1 at 6 a.m. The
proceeds from the event will go to-
ward the American Cancer Soci-
etys support programs, recovery
programs research and more.
Golden said some of those
funds would also stay local.

W
ith each passing day, it
seems as though it gets
harder and harder for peo-
ple to smoke cigarettes in public.
Not that thats a bad thing, necessar-
ily. It has been medically proven, after-
all, that cigarettes are addictive and
harmful to the health of both the
smoker and the people who inhale sec-
ond-hand smoke.
But at what point are we taking the
regulation of smoking too far? Or,
rather, is there a too far when regu-
lating smoking?
Much like alcohol and gambling, cig-
arettes are a highly taxed and regulat-
ed, yet completely legal, vice.
Unlike alcohol and gambling,
though, the act of smoking itself is
harmful to others, whereas drinking
alcohol and placing a bet are not. So it
makes sense, then, that the govern-
ment is doing everything it can to pro-
tect non-smokers from being negative-
ly affected by smokers.
That deserves an obvious bravo.
The move toward healthier public
living began with the outlaw of smok-
ing inside bars and restaurants. No
longer were there smoking and
non-smoking sections; smokers had
to travel outside to enjoy a puff.
These restaurants and bars coun-
tered by building decks, porches and
other attached structures where smok-
ers could inhale, and non-smokers
could frequent at their own risk.
Next came the outlawing of smoking
in cities and publicly-owned property
such as parks and recreational areas.
Now, these health improvements
have begun to trickle down to the local
level.
Municipalities throughout New Jer-
sey are beginning to propose, and pass,
smoking bans on public property, at
parks and recreational facilities.
We applaud any move that improves
the health of the majority, but we cau-
tion municipalities to be careful not to
take it too far.
Cigarettes are not a controlled sub-
stance, so rules that govern how they
can be regulated are limited.
Earlier this year, Oregon tried to
make cigarettes a controlled substance
in their state, but that idea didnt pass
as of yet.
Were all for improved public health
and for not punishing non-smokers.
But we dont want to do it at the ex-
pense of the rights and freedoms of
smokers.
No smoking, no problem?
Is our government taking smoking bans too far?
Your thoughts
Do smokers have a right to puff outside
in public places? Are we taking smoking
bans too far, or are we not taking them
far enough? Let your voice be heard.

Camden County Road and

Bridge Improvement Projects
Each year the Free-
holder Board identi-
fies roadways and
bridges that are in
need of improvement
across our County. As
liaison to the Camden
County Department
of Public Works, I am
happy to report that
we have begun work
on an aggressive list of projects this
construction season.
I consider the resurfacing and re-
construction of County roads and
maintenance of bridges a top prior-
ity of the Freeholder Board. Conse-
quently, we have allocated over $8
million for this round of improve-
ment projects alone.
This summer, the following road-
ways will be repaved:
Cedarbrook Road (CR 536) in
Winslow Township from Blue Anchor
Road to South Cedarbrook Road.
South Cedarbrook Road (CR561-3)
in Winslow Township from Cedar-
brook Road to Route 73.
Cove Road (CR 616) in Pennsauken
Township from River Road to West-
field Avenue.
East Atlantic Avenue (CR 727) in
Barrington and Lawnside from
Gloucester Pike to Haines Avenue.
Jarvis Road (CR687) in Gloucester
Township from Prospect Avenue to
Sicklerville Road.
Kaighn Avenue (CR 607) in Cam-
den City from Park Boulevard to Had-
don Avenue.
Somerdale Road (CR 677/678) in
Somerdale from the White Horse Pike
to the Somerdale border.
West Park Boulevard (CR 641) in
Haddon Township from Crystal Lake
Avenue to Cuthbert Boulevard

Reconstruction work also contin-
ues on the West Park Boulevard
Bridge in Haddon Township. When
completed this summer, the project
will include new concrete curbing
and handicap ramps,
new inlet and man-
hole castings, road-
way striping and
markings, and full
resurfacing of the
roadway approach-
ing the bridge. Work
is also progressing on
the Baird Boulevard
Bridge and State
Street Bridge in Camden City.
Both bridges, barring any unfore-
seen setbacks should be completed
in the late summer/early fall. These
spans over the Cooper River are
being completely replaced with
modern structures that will serve
the needs of motorists for the next
100 years.
We appreciate the patience and
understanding of motorists for any
inconvenience they may experience
due to traffic delays or detours
which will be posted if necessary. If
your travel plans involved these
roadways, please consider alternant
routes during these improvement
projects.
The Camden County Department
of Public Works is responsible for
maintaining over 400 center line
miles of county roadway and 50
bridges. They are dedicated to mak-
ing our area safer for motorists and
pedestrians through county high-
way construction projects, snow re-
moval and road maintenance,
including pothole repairs, street
sweeping, grass cutting and storm
drainage upkeep. The Public Works
Department is located in Linden-
wold where personnel are on call 24
hours a day, 7 days a week to serve
the residents of Camden County.

County roadways, call our Public
Works Hotline at (856) 566-2920 or

School lockdown on May 8
deemed a false alarm
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
A suspicious vehicle that
caused Eastern Regional High
School and Kellman Brown Acad-
emy to be placed on lockdown on
Wednesday, May 8, was deemed a
false alarm, according to Jason
Laughlin, spokesman for the
Camden County Prosecutors Of-
fice.
Gibbsboro Police responded to
a report of a suspicious vehicle
parked at a dentists office on
Haddonfield-Berlin Road.
The vehicle had an empty gun
holster on the dashboard and a
bag thought to be an ammunition
case, which turned out to be for
tools, Laughlin said.
The Voorhees Police placed the
schools on lockdown and closed
Route 561 for precaution, accord-
ing to a release.
Additional officers were also
assigned to area schools while
the investigation was in process,
the release said.
Eastern students remained in
class, and at 11:05 a.m., police lift-
ed the lockdown, an announce-
ment said.
The Camden County Sheriffs
Bomb Squad, Gibbsboro Police,
Voorhees Police, Clementon Po-
lice and more responded to the
incident.
Although the protective meas-
ures were taken as a precaution,
Laughlin said the incident in
Boston caused the quick reaction
to secure the area.
Nobody wants to be the per-
son to walk past it and not do
anything about it, he said.
The driver of the vehicle will
not face any charges.

Middle school to start new program
this summer: One School, One Book
Every year, Voorhees Middle
School provides students with a
list of book titles to read during
the summer. The goal is to pro-
mote reading and literacy beyond
school walls. This summer, VMS
is trying something new, One
School, One Book.
Every student, teacher, staff
member and administrator at the
VMS will read the same book at
the same time. In addition to im-
proving literacy and engaging
learners, the program builds
community within the school,
while expanding learning into a
social context.
On the book list is Miracle in
the Making: The Adam Taliaferro
Story by Scott Brown, Sam
Carchidi and Joe Paterno.
Taliaferro was a Signal Hill El-
ementary School, Voorhees Mid-
dle School, and Eastern High
School student, before being re-
cruited by Penn State to play foot-
ball. The book chronicles his re-
markable and courageous recov-
ery from a career-ending spinal
cord injury during the fifth game
of his college career. Adams
story is one of hope and inspira-
tion that is sure to engage stu-
dents and faculty, while it builds
kinship and unity within the
school.
Working in conjunction with
The Adam Taliaferro Foundation,
VMS was able to purchase copies
of the book at a reduced cost of
$10 and $1 per book will go back to
the foundation.
For more information about
Taliaferro or The Adam Taliafer-
ro Foundation visit www.taliafer-
rofoundation.org.
VMS is also hosting an au-
thors brunch on Wednesday, May
22, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the
school library. Carchidi and Talia-
ferro will be the guests of honor.
In addition, a culminating cele-
bratory Walk-a-Thon is scheduled
for early October.

YMCA to
conduct
needs
survey
If you live in Burlington or
Camden County, the YMCA wants
to hear from you! Through May
23, the YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties, a cause-driven
organization, is hosting an online
Community Needs Assessment
Survey to seek input from com-
munity members.
The YMCA is working with the
YMCA of the USA to conduct the
assessment.
Based on survey findings, the Y
will design and deliver new pro-
grams and services that address
critical issues in the areas of
youth development, healthy liv-
ing and social responsibility.
Were encouraging members
of the community to take the on-
line survey and provide feedback
so we can better understand the
needs of our community and de-
sign programs and services based
on those needs, said Tim Kerri-
hard, president & CEO, YMCA.
To participate in the survey,
visit www.ymca-bc.org.
Responses will not be individu-
ally tracked and will be kept con-
fidential. The survey should take
no more than five minutes to com-
plete.
The Y is also seeking partners
to assist them in distributing this
survey.
Contact Laura Lane, VP of
Marketing and Communications
by phone at (856) 234-6200 Ext. 206
or by email at laural@ymca-

Camden County metro
division now operational
The Camden County Police De-
partment Metro Division became
fully operational on May 1.
The swearing in of Police Chief
John Scott Thomson took place
during a ceremony at Camdens
Maladra Hall attended by Gov.
Christie along with state, county
and local representatives.
An additional 66 officers also
joined the Metro Divisions grow-
ing ranks.
This is a significant day for
Camden County as it marks the
final milestone in the establish-
ment of the Camden County Po-
lice Department, said Freeholder
Director Louis Cappelli, Jr. Chief
Thomson and the entire Camden
County Police Department have
come together as a professional co-
hesive unit, and we know they will
surpass all of the expectations we
have for them.
Earlier this month, the Camden
County Police Department Metro
Division began deploying officers
into Camden City neighborhoods
on foot.
Dispatching more Boots on the
Ground enables police to proac-
tively patrol the neighborhoods
while cultivating relationships
with residents and business own-
ers. This is essential to their mis-
sion of preventing crime rather
than reacting to reports of crime.
We all knew in our hearts that
this was the right thing to do for
our children and families.
The Metro Division is putting
hundreds of officers on the street
to patrol the neighborhoods of
Camden City on foot and by bicy-
cle.
This has created an imposing
police presence that is already
making criminals think twice be-
fore committing a crime in our
county. The Metro Division is not
being funded by county property
taxpayers, but through Camden
Citys property tax revenue and
state funds for municipal aid. If
other towns wish to join the re-
gional police department, they
will pay for police protection as a
shared service.
Our No. priority is to keep the
residents of Camden County
safe, Cappelli said. These sworn
police officers are making a
tremendous impact in our County
Seat, and by doing so are making
Camden County a safer place to
live for all residents.

Dispatchers using
new broadcasting
radio system
The Camden County Emer-
gency Communications Center
dispatchers began broadcasting
on a new 700 MHz radio system.
This $35 million investment by
the freeholder board enables our
first responders to provide criti-
cal emergency services in a more
effective and efficient manner
than ever before.
The first call on the new sys-
tem was a medical emergency in
Camden City, which was handled
flawlessly.
The freeholder boards No.
priority is to make sure the resi-
dents, families and children of
Camden County are safe, Free-
holder Scot McCray said. When
you call 911 it is imperative for
the system to work and for first
responders to have the ability to
communicate with one another.
The new Public Radio Commu-
nications System provides true
interoperability for police, fire
and EMS communications with-
in Camden County and our sur-
rounding region.
We will also have the ability to
communicate with surrounding
counties and the state using a re-
gional repeater.
The new system has numerous
advantages over the one it re-
places.
It utilizes microwave technolo-
gy, which is recognized as the
most reliable form of radio com-
munication and allows for up to
eight incident specific channels
for first responders on the scene
to communicate without inter-
ruption from other calls.
It also incorporates GIS map-
ping software to pinpoint more
accurate dispatch locations, and
offers military grade encryption
capabilities to prevent criminals
from being alerted to police activ-
ity. Most importantly, it elimi-

The Christie administration
announced that 24 Camden Coun-
ty municipalities will share $5.27
million in local aid grants to ad-
vance street, safety and quality-
of-life improvements without bur-
dening local property taxpayers.
Twenty-three Camden County
municipalities will receive a mu-
nicipal aid grant worth a com-
bined total of nearly $4.7 million.
Two Transportation Enhance-
ment grants worth $590,000 will
benefit two Camden County mu-
nicipalities, including Mer-
chantville Borough, which also
will be receiving a municipal aid
grant.
The grants are part of a pack-
age of 406 Local Aid grants worth
$86.5 million announced for mu-
nicipalities across the state.
The bulk of the local aid grants
will be awarded under the Munic-
ipal Aid Program, with 377 grants
totaling $76.2 million.
Another 29 Transportation En-
hancement grants for quality-of-
life, bicycle and pedestrian safety
projects totaling $10.3 million
were also announced.
Both grant programs are com-
petitive, with applications rated
on their merits by NJDOT and
other transportation officials.
The grants will provide re-
sources to 382 different munici-
palities.
In most cases, the grant recipi-
ent is the municipality, but in a
few instances the grant will go to
a specific organization or other
governmental unit advancing a
project in one or more municipal-
ities.
A total of 660 applications were
submitted for this round of state-
funded Municipal Aid Grants.
The department encouraged
municipalities to submit applica-
tions for bikeway, pedestrian safe-
ty and streetscape projects.
Six percent of the projects se-
lected for funding represented
such types of projects, with the
remaining 94 percent of the
grants going toward traditional
road improvement projects.
The federally funded Trans-
portation Enhancement program
supports projects that preserve
and protect natural and cultural
resources and promote alterna-
tives to driving. The successful
applications advance quality-of-
life, bikeway and pedestrian safe-
ty projects. Under the Municipal
Aid Grant program, each county
is apportioned a share of the total
funding based on population and
the number of local centerline
miles. Municipalities compete
for portions of their countys
share.
NJDOT provides 75 percent of
the grant amount when a town
awards a contract and the re-
maining 25 percent upon comple-
tion of the project.

Officials: Police getting
results with new system
nates the problem of interference
from digital television stations
from as far away as North Caroli-
na and New England.
The signal strength and clari-
ty of the new system is unsur-
passed. We tested the new radios
in areas that had previously
posed problems to our public
safety community, and they more
than impressed us, McCray
said. From the top of a Cherry
Hill high-rise, inside a bank vault
in Haddon Township and the
middle of an orchard in Winslow,
we experienced crystal clear
communications.
The project included the con-
struction of new radio towers.
You may have noticed the new
towers that have gone up in Cam-
den City, Cherry Hill, Gloucester
Township, Lindenwold,
Pennsauken, Runnemede,
Voorhees, Waterford Township
and Winslow Township.
They have been strategically
placed to provide the most
coverage during emergency situ-
ations.
As I have said previously, I
personally understand the im-
portance of providing our first
responders with the tools they
need to perform their jobs, Mc-
Cray said.
Last year, during a fire at my
home, I saw firsthand the roles
these radios play in making sure
my children and wife got out of a
burning building alive.
All of the countys fire and
emergency medical services from
each of our 37 municipalities are
now being dispatched on the new
700 MHz system.
The Voorhees Police Depart-
ment has been using the new sys-
tem since April 8, with excellent
results.
Over the course of the next
year, 33 additional municipal po-
lice departments will also mi-
grate to the new system.
