The Forget-Me-Not

News for alumnae of Alpha Phi at the University of Maryland

Spring 2013

Senior lands prestigious position

hen Chelsea Dubrofsky joined Alpha Phi in 2010, she anticipated a fun distraction. She would make new friends, dress up for formals and wear T-shirts bearing billboard letters and creative slogans. She never expected that she could turn Alpha Phi into a career. This winter, Dubrofsky was selected for an Educational Leadership Consultant position with Alpha Phi International. Educational Leadership Consultants, or ELCs, are traveling alumnae who are paid to develop chapters in recruitment, officer training, goal setting and more.
In 1894, Alpha Phi became the first womens fraternity to use traveling delegates, now known as Educational Leadership Consultants.

Phi Fact:

The application process comprises a written component and several interviews. Dubrofsky is among 15 current trainees chosen from thousands of applicants.

The process is competitive, but very worthwhile, chapter advisor and former ELC Brittany Fertig said. I feel that by working together with like-minded women, we were able to help each other reach our fullest potentials, live fulfilled lives and continue to be philanthropic. When Dubrofsky received notification in December that she would join the ELC team, she was ecstatic. The ELC position is an amazing way to begin my career, she said. I have the opportunity to bring my passion to other chapters and connect with thousands of my sisters. Dubrofsky will train at Alpha Phi headquarters in Evanston, Ill. for three weeks in July and begin traveling immediately. After her contract ends in March, she may choose to continue as an ELC. According to Alpha Phi Internationals website, each ELC travels to 14 states, visits 19 chapters and collects an average of 22

T-shirts, a prospect Dubrofskys freshman self would love. Its amazing that I will be representing our chapter across the country, Dubrofsky said. I cant wait to put my best foot forward and bring a little bit of Terp spirit everywhere I go.

Gold explained that the fraternity hired a company to provide casino tables and slot machines. Guests dressed in cocktail attire and Phi Delt brothers in bow-ties served refreshments. The Greek organizations with the most participants won money toward their philanthropies. This year, FIJI and Kappa Alpha Theta claimed the $500 prizes. We ended up raising more than $13,000 and had about 400 people come out, a huge improvement from last year, Gold said. We hope to make it even bigger and better in the future.

We got to have a lot of fun while also raising money for great causes. Congratulations to this years winner, Eric Bose of Alpha Tau Omega! n April 20, men representing 15 different fraternities flaunted formal wear, swimsuits and a choreographed dance routine to compete for the title of Mr. Greek. Since 2009, Alpha Phi and Tau Kappa Epsilon have presented the Mr. Greek pageant to benefit the Alpha Phi Foundation and TKEs philanthropy, the Ronald Reagan Association. This year, the competition received sponsorship from 20 Greek organizations on campus, in addition to corporate sponsors

Alpha Phi chapter house receives long-awaited face-lift

Home sweet home

The forget-me-not is an official flower of Alpha Phi and is included in our house to honor alumnae.

Phi Fact:

hen construction on the Alpha Phi chapter house commenced in the summer of 2011, it was unclear when the residence would be livable again. They just kind of dove head first into the project, house manager and sister Michelle Fernandez said. Once they got going, they promised us we could move in the fall of 2012, which ended up happening. So that was great. Phi Sigma Sigma and Alpha Phi were the final sorority houses at the university to receive facelifts. Together, the renovations cost $13.7 million. Each house retained its foundation and exterior, but was completely rebuilt from the inside. The chapter house was certainly due for the updates.

Things were falling apart and the dcor needed serious updating, Fernandez said. Luckily, we were able to consult several designers who are actually Alpha Phis themselves. The chapter has been saving for the recently completed improvements since its founding in 1961. The Alpha Phi House Corporation Board helmed the project, but consulted house officers and housemother, Carol Lindblom. Lindblom, known affectionately as Ms. Lin, also benefited from the upgrades. She has her own apartment within the house, which includes a living area, office, bathroom and spacious master bedroom. The updates to the rest of the

house include a study lounge, two flat-screen televisions in each hallway, and the addition of two basement suites. All furniture is also brand-new. Our house is amazing. The whole sorority loves to come here just to hang out. Its really helped us become closer as a chapter, sister Maggie Sundel said. For the most part, sisters have offered positive reviews of the new and improved digs. Overall, I really like the new house, sister Ana Simon said. Its very pink, but when will I ever get the chance to live in a pink house again? To view pictures of the renovations, visit www.umdalphaphi. com. Alumnae may also visit the house at any time to take a tour with a current sister.
