L+V32/40DF

Environmentally friendly and economical

MAN B&W Diesel
3 L+V32/40DF Environmentally friendly and economical
MAN Diesel & Turbo is the worlds leading designer and manufacturer of low and
medium speed engines. Our involvement with electrical power generators goes
back to 1904 when we supplied the first ever diesel generator sets to the Kiev Tram
System.
Since those early days, MAN Diesel & Turbo has never lost its technological pre-
eminence in the large engine field. Likewise, our engines have never relinquished
their status as the most efficient combustion engines available.
More than ever before, MAN Diesel & Turbos development focus is on the environ-
mental performance of our engines. Using our unrivalled grasp of large engine
technology, we aim to make our engines progressively cleaner, more powerful and
more efficient.
With our firm commitment to reducing emissions while increasing fuel efficiency
and power density, and with our active partnership with environmental institutions
and development banks, we intend to be part of the global emissions solution.
MAN Diesel & Turbo
The responsible way in leading technology
4 L+V32/40DF Environmentally friendly and economical
Rugged engine block
The engine is housed in a rigid monobloc frame,
further strengthened by continuous tie rods. These
run from the underslung main bearing to the top edge
of the engine frame, and from the cylinder head
through the intermediate plate.
Durable valves
All valves are armoured to reduce wear, and the
exhaust valve seats are water-cooled. The exhaust
valves have an exhaust-driven rotor, while the inlet
valves have rotocaps for clean, gas-tight valve seats.
Robust cylinder head
The strong cylinder head ensures high stiffness, with
bore cooling for efficient heat dissipation.
Cylinder liner with fire ring
The thick-walled design provides high resistance to
deformation, preventing cavitation. This leads to
better piston performance and a longer service life.
In combination with the stepped piston, the fire ring
prevents combustion residue accumulating on the
cylinder liner. This minimises liner bore polishing,
reducing oil consumption.
Connecting rod
The marine head design, with a joint in the upper
shaft, allows piston overhaul without removal of the
connecting rod bearing. A low piston height also
makes overhaul easier.
Proven Diesel Technology
The 32/40DF engine is based on the tried and tested 32/40 diesel engine, which is
designed for HFO operation. With the same key components as its famously robust
diesel counterpart, the 32/40DF offers the same high availability, durability and low
maintenance.
MAN B&W Diesel

Seamless changeover
Switching from gas to diesel fuel operation at full load
will not affect output or speed. This gives the oper-
ator complete flexibility to change fuels in line with
the supply situation guaranteeing availability under
any circumstance.
For this reason, the 32/40DF is highly suitable for use
in a back-up genset, in case of outages. Alternatively,
it can be used in a back-up diesel genset for use in
gas supply interruptions.
Prechamber injection
In gas operation, pilot fuel is injected into the two
cooled prechambers. This creates high injection
energy, which ensures the ignition of lean-burning
gas/air mixtures in the main combustion chamber.
As a result, NO
X
emissions are extremely low when
running on gas.
A separate pump for pilot fuel injection ensures
accurate, reliable metering of small amounts. The
main injection nozzle is activated only in diesel
operation.
Economical and environmentally friendly
When operating with gas, the pilot fuel amounts
to approximately only one per cent of diesel fuel
consumption in full diesel mode. Accordingly, the
engine produces very low emissions and requires
only small storage tanks for secondary fuel.
Precise metering
Electromagnetic valves accurately inject gas for each
cylinder. By minimising firing pressure fluctuations
between the individual cylinders, this ensures smooth
operation and high efficiency. That means lower NO
X
emissions.
Double camshaft concept
Injection and gas exchange are controlled separately.
As a result, the engine can easily accommodate
different natural gas qualities.
Dual-fuel Flexibility
6 L+V32/40DF Environmentally friendly and economical
Top turbochargers
The constant pressure turbocharging system uses
cutting-edge MAN Diesel & Turbo TCA series turbo-
chargers. Their high efficiency at full and part loads
and with any number of cylinders ensures
thorough combustion in both dual-fuel and diesel
operation.
Exhaust gas temperatures are well within permissible
thresholds, and exhaust gas piping is easy to install.
Special features for gas operation include a con-
trolled compressor bypass, which ensures the best
possible combustion air ratio.
Compact, easy-to-service GenSets
The engine and alternator are flexibly coupled and
installed on a steel foundation frame. Flexibly mount-
ing the engine reduces engine vibration transmission
to the frame, alternator and concrete foundation.
To save space, the engine lube oil tank is installed in
the frame. Whats more, the frames low-weight
design reduces the overall weight of the GenSet. The
design also allows a wide choice of alternators.
Piping to the engine is routed through a single con-
nection box. This makes it easy to connect to further
piping using flexible compensators.

Safe natural gas supply
In accordance with safety requirements, there is a
gas control system (overpressure) with gas lock and
pressure control.
Low-pressure gas injection means that no gas
compressor is needed at 5 bar main pressure (over-
pressure). The gas control system can safely be
installed within the power station. And the low risk
minimises the need for explosion protection and
heavy-duty safety devices.
Full compliance
The 32/40DF engine complies with all safety require-
ments in applicable standards and legislation (EU,
CE, DVGW). In addition to the gas control system, the
engine is fitted with relief valves for the crankcase,
charge air and exhaust gas pipes.

Engine control and monitoring
A modular management system controls and moni-
tors the engine and engine auxiliaries. This includes
anti-knocking control, Lambda control, and a speed
governor system.
The engine can automatically adapt to variations in
gas qualities. In fact, it can even switch from diesel to
gas operation, or vice versa.
The result of all of this? High efficiency and reliability,
high output, and low exhaust gas emissions.
