Palos Verdes school students, prior to 1925, attended schools in Redondo Beach, which was then part of the Los Angeles City School District. A separate Palos Verdes school district was created in 1925, however it was only for grades K-8. The first school constructed, in 1926 in Malaga Cove, housed all school grades from elementary school through eighth grade, with high school students continuing to attend schools in Redondo Beach. During the construction of Malaga Cove School, students temporarily attended classes in the Gardiner Building in Malaga Cove Plaza. Palos Verdes High School was originally planned and constructed as a six year school for grades 7 through 12 by the Los Angeles School District in 1960, but when the Palos Verdes Unified School District was formed
to include high schools as well as grade school students, the partially completed campus of Palos Verdes High was converted to a high school in 1961 as the first high school of the Palos Verdes Unified School District. When the school opened, construction was not complete. Some classes had to be held in the lunch area and others met in the school buses. (PVPUSD owned a large fleet of yellow school buses at that time.) Originally, the school had a print shop and an auto shop, but both were never used for those purposes. Prior to the opening of Palos Verdes High School, high school students on the Peninsula attended such schools as Redondo Union High and Narbonne High. Rolling Hills High School opened in the fall of 1964 for grades nine through eleven. Seniors stayed at Palos Verdes High School. Miraleste High opened in 1968.

In 1991, due to declining high school enrollment, the three high schools were consolidated on the campus of Rolling Hills High School, and renamed Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. Peninsula High School was the name that was supposed to have been given to the 4th high school that had originally been planned to be built on 35 acres across Highridge Rd. from Ridgecrest Intermediate School. However, that school was never built, 10 acres was developed as Highridge Park, and 25 acres was sold for $6,000,000 to a developer in 1986 (which caused quite a fervor since many thought it was below market value) and so when the consolidated high school was named, it got the Peninsula High name. At the time of consolidation, Palos Verdes High and Miraleste High were converted to intermediate schools, and the former intermediate schools at Malaga Cove and Margate were closed and temporarily leased to other preschools and prep schools. When Palos Verdes High school was reopened in 2002 (with just freshman and sophomores), Verdes and the school at Margate was reopened as Palos

HOUSING PRICES ARE GROWING AS FAST AS THEY DID BEFORE THE BUBBLE BURST
Since January 2013, the S&P/Case-Shiller indexes, which measure housing prices, have risen at their fastest rate since 2006, before the housing bubble burst. Prices are still around 30% less than they were in their peak days, but Forbes cites research like that of the Barclays Economic Team to estimate that, in general, US home process will go up an additional 6-7% on average in the remainder of 2013. Barclays points out that sales of newly constructed homes went up 13% from December 2012 to January 2013. Growth is steady, but there are still about 2 million homes underwater or in foreclosure, which banks are holding onto tightly and have not been put on the market yet.

Sandra Sanders founded RE/MAX Palos Verdes in the 1980s after working as an agent since 1974. Her sons James and John are business partners and her daughter Diane is also a part of the family business, and she hopes that her grandchildren will be, too. This comes on the heels of RE/Max Estate Properties being awarded the RE/MAX total volume multi-office achievement award for having reached a goal of almost $3 Billion in 2012. The Sanders are opening a new building in Manhattan Beach, currently being remodeled, along with a new building in Marina del Rey. Were recruiting a lot of people, says Sanders, who recently added 40 new agents to her fold. I worked very hard for a lot of years. And Ive been very very lucky. I have been in the right spot at the right time to recruit agents we constantly try to give our agents every tool and benefit to be productive. If you are fair and honest and try very hard and work very hard, people want to work for you. Along with their recent additions, RE/MAX has included new technology like Street Advisor to their websites, and provides many tools for all RE/MAX agents to stay competitive in todays highly high-tech market. We have a training room in our Hawthorne building where we train 5 days a week. We have networking meetings almost every day. We have sales meetings. We constantly have somewhere for our agents to go, to network and to learn. We want our agents to be somewhere productive. As far as local Peninsula developments and business, Sanders is excited about the local economy. The St. John Fisher Catholic Church buildings in Palos Verdes are currently being upgraded; Marymount College is now a four-year college, with rumors of upcoming Masters programs. Sanders is excited about the luxurious local Terranea Resort, which is doing incredible business as a vacation destination. Its very popular with locals as well as out-of-towners, she says. Also of note is that the Peninsula Center shopping center has been sold to new owners and should be stocked with new businesses soon. Sanders knows the local buyers and property owners on the Peninsula very well; she finds that the unique flavor of the Peninsula is due mostly to its residents, which she describes as highly intelligent, and conservative. In relating to us why the Peninsula is sought-after as a destination for homeowners, she replies that the community is relatively safe, the weather is wonderful, the schools are fantastic, and the people are really nice and its beautiful.

Reflecting back on her beach volleyball career, Kerri Walsh Jennings cant help but be amazed at the experiences and success shes attained. As a three-time Olympic Gold medalist and one of the most decorated beach volleyball players of all-time, Walsh Jennings isnt done yet. South Bay Digs caught up with her on the sand in Manhattan Beach to talk about her love of the South Bay, her growing family and just how excited she is to get back to playing volleyball.

Whats the energy like and how does it feel when you compete in local tournaments? KWJ: It is much more intense when competing in the South
Bay. The tournaments and footprint are bigger. They have been around for so long, and the support from the public, its loud and rowdy. They understand the gravity of how big the tournaments are. It is kind of like our Superbowl. It is that legit and storied. People love to be apart of it.
What are some of your favorite spots on the beach and in town to hangout at?
KWJ: We moved a little over a year ago to Manhattan Beach in this little triangle for the past 10 years and havent found a bad spot yet. I love training here. I used to do it just north of the Manhattan Beach Pier before London. It feels private, but is a very public beach. People would always come and watch. I love all of the shops in Metlox. I am so in to shopping, so it is a
blessing and a curse to live in this town. You can go to so many places and have fun!

Do you play volleyball with your kids and hope theyll be involved in sports as they get older, especially volleyball? KWJ: The beach is our playground. We are here a lot and not just for our jobs. After school, the kids love to come here. Well play volleyball, soccer, baseball, all sports really. Ironically, Im not much of a water girl, but Im working on it. It could be a freezing cold day and the boys will be in there. Im excited for our daughter to become apart of that. How hard is it to balance having a family and being a professional beach volleyball player? KWJ: It has been the best thing ever. It has taken me outside of myself. Part of the nature of being an athlete is being focused on yourself. It is crazy how self involved you can get. Not that it is a bad thing, but I was just so sick of worrying about myself, so to have what we have now is such a beautiful thing. My whole life Ive wanted to be a working mom. And to have the relationship I do with my husband and chase crazy dreams together, we have that and we work really hard at it. It is overwhelming sometimes, but this is what we want. My parents were great role models. Do you have the itch to get back and compete again? KWJ: Im ready. I was dead tired after London. We had a few tournaments after that and I felt like I had a great year. Ive been staying very fit and active and gave my body to the pregnancy. Im doing the same things, but the intensity and intention is different. I just cant wait to have that goal and focus back. I love chasing things. This has been a great focus. When its time to go to work, I cant wait! Ive had this sense of urgency and desire to get back, but I dont want to sprint. I want to enjoy this time and not worry about kicking peoples butts right away. Have you begun to think about the 2016 Olympics in Brazil? Will it be weird not to have Misty by your side? KWJ: I definitely have. My goal and dream is to beat one of their teams for the gold medal match. I want to beat the Brazilians on their home turf. I started thinking about that right when I left London. It is such an exciting prospect and I have much time between now and then, but it goes by in a heartbeat. Weve done this
routine before, but every four years is different. I am really looking forward to the whole process, the good and the tough. It has been so worthwhile. It will be bittersweet not to have Misty there, but it is what it is. Once I get on that sand and it officially isnt with Misty, it will be sad. With that being said, we had the most amazing career together and Im so excited to see her chase the dream of starting a family. Well be doing so much more together off of the court. She lives in Long Beach, but sometimes it feels like she lives along the East Coast because we dont connect as much. Well talk here and there. The love is like a family member, you dont have to see them all the time. I love her and am such a big fan of hers.
We have great athletes and the fields seem so much deeper. However, our domestic standing is really sad. The AVP is coming back this year though and they are planning really big things. The sport has had ebbs and flows and if the domestic situation for our sport was better, I would be so happy. My mission for the next few years is to get the sport to where it should be in the mainstream and keep it there forever. I see myself as an ambassador for the game and just love it so much. I am really trying to fight for the integrity and stability of the sport. Im seeing it from every single angle and it really is such an amazing sport that I dont know why we cant be stable here in the states. We need to change that. I love that I am an ambassador and role model. I take it really seriously. When you were younger, did you ever imagine youd be this successful? KWJ: That isnt something you think about until it happens to you. I always wanted to be successful and have worked really hard for that. Ive been able to surround myself with amazing people and feel really blessed. I was raised in a very athletic family and knew I wanted to be an athlete, and once I found volleyball, I knew I wanted to go as far as I could. I pictured the Olympics at some point, but not the rest of it. What is the life of a professional athlete? I still dont know. Now I have the best of both. Im living my dream on and off the court. What are your plans like for the future? KWJ: I feel like the best is yet to come and thats why I still want to keep playing. People kept asking me why
I didnt hang it up after London. Its because I know I have more in me and better in me. I want to see what that looks like. Im excited for the challenge of a new partner however bittersweet it may be initially. I definitely have a few girls in mind. I havent made anything official, partly because I am so preoccupied. The girls Im thinking of are partnered up for the year. That conversation will be had when it is the best time, but little conversations have taken place. Whoever I do wind up with, I want them to challenge me and compliment me and the girls Im thinking of do that. I know theyll make me better. I cant wait to find that chemistry and rhythm again. It is a really fun challenge and you grow so much from it, so Im excited.

Jason Podlaski has been skateboarding for as long as he can remember. Yet, the same thing continued to happen as Podlaski and his friends rode their boards: they broke. Thats when Podlaski, the founder of deckstool, had an idea. Hed create furniture out of the broken skateboards. Sitting on that thought for a few years, it wasnt until 2010 that Podlaski began manufacturing recycled skateboard furniture in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. I love the skateboard graphics and markings, Podlaski said. That is the core beauty of the skateboard. You think about what went into the board and the passion that was infused into the material. Its pretty neat when you see it turn into something. Podlaski first started out creating stools ($199.99) that use between 2 K to 4 K boards. He has now moved onto benches ($749.99-$899.99) that use between 4 to 8 boards. The amount of boards used for each piece is determined by its size and how each board broke. Hes even begun making magnets ($20) and keychains ($10) from the recycled boards and is considering making a line of clocks. Ive never seen anything where FOR MORE INFO, VISIT: DECKSTOOL.COM they take advantage of the entire board, Podlaski said. That is something that we do. It may be a big process, but it is definitely worth it. Podlaski starts out each piece by sorting the boards based on how they broke. He cleans them, cuts the parts, sands the edges and then does the heavy labor (drill holes, etc.) before the furniture is complete and ready to sell. While Podlaski gets most of the recycled skateboards from local skate shops and parks in Pennsylvania, interest for his pieces have been everywhere from California to Florida and even Europe. Its his goal to continue the reach of deckstool and begin expanding up and down the East Coast and to places like Wisconsin and Texas. It all started as a side project, Podlaski said. Im shocked that its continued to get bigger. It really gets me excited and committed to continue to build more and make them last.
