Student Objectives

Freshmen Honors English: Lord of the Flies

Students will be able to draw on their memories of the book to explain certain events and reactions of the characters and predict what will happen in future chapters based on the actions of certain characters such as Jack and Ralph. Students will be able to draw on their knowledge about literary objects in the novel to create new meaning with those objects as symbols. Content Standards Common Core 9-10.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and rened by specic details; provide an objective summary of the text. Common Core 9-10.R.L.1 Key Ideas and Details: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Materials Students: Lord of the Flies book, composition book, pen/pencil, Homework (statuses) Teacher:, Study Guides, Lord of the Flies book, Symbols Handouts Check for Understanding By having the students complete a short quiz, I will be able to assess if students are completing the readings for the class discussions and see if they are comprehending the text on an individualized level. By asking students direct and indirect questions, I will be able to asses their understanding of the novel. Also, by instituting the use of index cards to call their names, I will be able to make sure that all students have to equal chance or opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge to the class.

Time Start of Class

Freshmen Honors English: Lord of the Flies

-Students know that they should immediately take out their composition notebooks and turn to the vocabulary section. -Tell students the numbers of the days vocabulary words (115 and 116) and place overhead transparency on the screen and tell students that they should be: -*silently* working on copying the vocabulary words, denitions, and sentences -completing the activities under the word -determining the sentence structure (simple, complex, compound, or compound/ complex) of the example sentences. -As student write the words and the sentences down, begin to go over the denitions and the activities. -Go over sentence structure for both words by having the students walk me through the process of marking the subjects, verbs, dependent, and independent clauses.

Lesson Instruction -Tell students to go put their composition notebooks on the back table for a notebook check. -Have students clear their desks of everything but a pencil or pen, as they will be taking a quiz on Chapters 1 through 6.

15 mins -Hand out quiz to all of students, and tell them they have 15 mins to complete the quiz. -Rotate around the room to make sure that the students do not have any questions. -Collect quiz from students. -Tell students that we are now going to be doing an activity with symbols of the novel. -Ask students to dene symbol. -Give students Teaching Symbols Handout, and read over the rst portion of the assignment description as a class. -Tell students as a class we are going to ll out the information for one of the major symbols of the book: Piggys glasses. -Go through example worksheet box by box and ll in the answers for Piggys glasses. (see teachers version of handout). -Have students ip over the handout, and nish reading the rest of the assignment. 5 mins -Tell students that before we go divide up into groups, I am going to do an example (bad) of the presentation they are supposed to do with their group members.

Freshmen Honors English: Lord of the Flies

-Have students count off by 5 and then have them get into groups by their numbers. -Assign group 1: Signal Fire, group 2: the beast, group 3: conch, group 4: face paint or the mask, and group 5: Parachute Man

Time 15 mins

Closure/Review -Allow students to have the remaining time to work on their project. -Rotate around the room to answer questions and make sure they say on task.
