ELIZABETH COLBERT BUSCH CONCEDES TO CONGRESSMAN-ELECT SANFORD

YDSC Thanks Colbert Busch For Great Campaign, Vows to Press On
Dum Spiro Spero; while I breathe, I hope. Our state motto has never been more true, especially now. We knew the stakes going into the First Congressional special election, and they were high. This was a district that Mitt Romney won by 18 percent at the last general election. The fact that Elizabeth Colbert Busch cut this deficit in half is a testament to her team and the tenacity of Young Democrats here and across the country for candidates who turned out to help with this campaign. We congratulate our nominee, Elizabeth Colbert Busch on a great campaign, and we congratulate former Gov. Mark Sanford on his victory. It is our hope that the Congressman-elect learns from his experiences in his campaign, his first three terms in Congress, and his terms as Governor, and not completely ignore the people of his District in favor of his beliefs. We live in serious times, and opposing ideas to the left of Barry Goldwater out of hand is not a serious strategy. We would like to thank the countless Young Democratsboth here and across the nationwho made calls into the district; who took weekends off to canvass in Charleston, Dorchester, Beaufort, and Berkeley counties; who made donations to the

campaign. We also thank the Young Democrats of America, who set up our national phone bank for Elizabeth Colbert Busch in the final two weeks of this campaign. On behalf of the Young Democrats of South Carolina and its members, thank you. It is in times like these we find solace in the words of former President John F. Kennedy: We choose to go to the moonand do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills; because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept; one we are unwilling to postpone... President Kennedy may have been speaking on the moon shot, but our partys challenge in South Carolina has never been a sprint. On the way to the moon, the Apollo program faced significant setbacks and failures and it never stopped them. This special election wont stop us either. Even in the face of defeat, we press on. We will move forward. We will, as Vice President Biden told us last Friday, keep the faith.

The Young Democrats of South Carolina (YDSC) is the official youth voter outreach wing of the South Carolina Democratic Party (SCDP). We work aggressively to encourage voters under the age of 36 to actively participate in the democratic process while educating young people on the core values and principles of the Democratic Party. Our mission is to unite and educate the lives, minds, and practices of youth voters and serve collectively as the youth voice of the South Carolina Democratic Party.
