Why is MAFA important to you? The Midwest Association of Filipino-Americans is very important to me because of what the organizations goal is: to unite Filipino-Americans and other Asian-Americans in the Midwest region of the United States and to help them grow much more familiar with their own cultures. As someone who was not in sync with his culture in the past, the MAFA conferences had helped me understand who I am as a Filipino-American member in our current society. Not everyone knows the history of their cultures and MAFA is there not only to provide that, but to also show them that they can become leaders in their colleges or communities with that culture. MAFA helps to empower individuals by promoting their conferences, which include many leadership and Filipino history workshops. MAFA is a great organization and with such a diverse amount of schools as a part of it, it helps us to grow stronger as individuals and be proud to be raised with the culture that we were born in.

How would you define innovation and creativity? In what ways would you use innovation and creativity towards your position as Media Relations Chair? To me, innovation is the ability to think of or bring something new to the table. It essentially represents new ideas or new strategies for preconceived goals. Creativity is what goes along with that and is the physical representation of an individuals innovative ideas. Being creative can either involve usage of tools in ways that were never thought of before or can even involve a lot of imagination. Innovation and creativity could be used in the Media Relations position by providing different media sources for everyone to get involved with. Were all (mostly) familiar with Twitter and Facebook as social media outlets and advertisement pools, but weve all seemed to have forgotten the joys of a simple cell phone. Nowadays, a huge majority of individuals have upgraded to smart phones, allowing them access to a plethora of applications. If not that, most individuals are familiar with the act of texting. Not only is texting a huge deal in the Philippines, it is also utilized very much here in America. My innovation is to involve more usage of the cell phone by providing either a text message listserv or suggesting an application (such as GroupMe) that most people with or without smart phones can utilize in order to chat with various individuals within the MAFA organization. I also plan to incorporate videos, such as the previous Media Relations Chair did, with different styles of advertising and relaying information.

One of the most difficult tasks as Media Relations Chair is balancing the use of social media outlets and making sure the information you are sending out is informative and consistent. How would you use each social media outlet and how would you work with the other members on board to properly balance tasks and relay information?

The Social Media Chair is but one position out of several within the MAFA board. Acting purely on impulse and relaying irrelevant information is something that should be taken into account by all of the members. I plan to contact a majority of the MAFA board before I relay different pieces of information to the MAFA general members. This is not to say that all of my ideas and social media reliance will be dependent on the responses of everyone else, but I really feel as if everyone should have a say in the matter. Its also a great way to get some constructive criticism and feedback in order to make sure Im doing everything correctly. Balancing tasks within the board can also be efficient with proper communication. If individuals in the board are willing to cooperate with one another, I would have no problem asking them with favors for certain MAFA-related tasks, and vice versa. Balancing social media outlets can also be done by moderating all of the social media sites and making sure that everything is updated at the same time. One social media outlet should not be favored over the other. Once again, feedback would also help to maintain the balance. If any board member- or general member- notices that one social media outlet is being utilized more than the other, then contacting me or anyone on the board to make changes will be a great method of keeping everything on point and organized.
