Lets Make a Community

Lets Make a Community Social Studies Lesson Plan Summary of the Lesson Plan: Teacher will have the students construct a community by using what they have learned in this unit. This model will include buildings, homes and other places need for their imaginary community. Target Population: Second Grade All levels Whole Group, Small Groups Materials:
Pencils Cardboard Wooden cubes Popsicle sticks Markers, crayons, colored pencils Large sheet of flat cardboard Software-Community Construction Kit-by: Tom Snyder

Objectives: Standard: G6.2.2 Describe neighborhoods and communities as places where people live, work, and play. G6.2.2 I can describe neighborhoods and communities.

Procedure: 1. The teacher will review what makes a community and what students have learned. 2. The teacher will tell the students they will be making an imaginary community. Teacher will show the students how to use the Construction kit. 3. Teacher will put the students in groups of 4-5. Each group will make a plan for their city Students will give their community a name. The students will gather the materials that they need Each group will read the information in their Community Construction Kit. 4. Students will make their models of their community. 5. Closure: Student will share their projects with the class. The class will provide feedback for each group. Assessment: Teacher will assess group projects and presentation of projects.

Reflection:
Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think that the easiest part will be telling the students about the task. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most challenging part of the lesson is making sure the students fully understand the task. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will follow up with a final test on the Unit and a simply essay about what the students have learned. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concepts I could put them in a group that they can learn and work with.. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I might want extend this lesson into two parts depending on the amount of time it takes. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of the lesson was making sure the software is ready for the students to use and having a back-up plan in case technology fails.
