News Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 4 Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is a 5th grade history lesson that will teach the students about the different aspects of major news events. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History (p. 658). Target Population: Fifth Grade. All levels Whole group reading, individual assessment. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History. Paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons, pencils Large poster board, books, computer, projector YouTube clips Objectives: H3.5.5 Provide and discuss major news events on local, state, national, and world levels. H3.5.5 I can discuss major news events on multiple levels. Procedure: 1. Teacher will ask the students if they watch the news. Call on someone if they say yes and ask them what kind of information is spread on the news. Read page 658 and discuss why it would be important to keep up to date with the news at this time. Show the class different clips on YouTube of current news events. Show them local, state, national and world news. A clip of each one. Have a class discussion of their opinions on each clip. Ask them if they think its important to keep up with the news happening around their community and around the world? 2. Split the class up into groups of four. Each group will either be assigned local, state, national, or world. Groups will have to research a current event that is happening within that region. They will create a poster board making the rest of the class aware of this event. The poster board must include a picture and bullet point facts about the event. Each group member will write a short paragraph explaining why they picked this event and why we need to be informed about it. 3. The groups will present the poster to the rest of the class. The class will ask questions if they have any after the presentations. The teacher will collect the posters and paragraphs.

News Social Studies Lesson Plan Day 4 Assessment: The teacher will collect and grade the posters and paragraphs. The teacher will also assess by the group discussions about the events shown through the clips. Reflection: Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be for me to teach them about the news and understand that it the news shows things from all around the world. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most difficult part will be trying to get them to understand that its important to understand whats going on in the world around them. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I could follow up this lesson by showing more news clips when something important is going on in the world. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept I would give more examples and pull them aside for additional help. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The only part of the lesson that may need change is the number of clips that I show. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? 5th graders probably wont care about the news, so the most difficult part was trying to show them that news is important.
