Tapp 1 Anthony Tapp INTL 3111 Robert Arnold 15 April 2013 1984 This book is about a dystopian society

that regulates the community by watching there every move. Tactics such as telescreens, Big Brother, and the party are used to control the minds of the individuals living in Oceania. This mind control is dictated by a political system called Ingsoc, under the control of the Inner Party, that persecutes any individualism and thinking as thought crimes. Big Brother is the head of this tyranny but has never been seen which leads to the suspicion of his non-existence. Throughout the story Winston evolves into and individual who attempts to over throw the party, with the help of a woman named Julia. This dystopian society was made up for a reason because it would never become a success in modern day America. A society as the one displayed in Oceania, would never be a success in modern day America. Simply because of the extensive diversity and cultures that this country possesses. Culture in America is what keeps traditions and customs alive. Its what reminds us of where we have come from and where it has taken us today. Culture lives and breaths inside every individual in America, therefore it at least gives them one thing that they would be proud to express. With that being known, these courses of actions would not be permitted in Oceania. The consequences would resort in everyone being tortured and killed because of expression. But even though that would happen, Americans

Tapp 2 would out number any officials that would try to implement the consequences. It would become to overbearing for the officials to try and torture everybody, which would quickly discredit their intentions. From there Americans would not fear expressing themselves, therefore the Party would be diminished. Another reason why this society would not exist in modern day is because Americans have a hard problem being forcefully being told what to do. This country has so many individuals that will not tolerate direction given to them, regardless of the form initiated. Due to all of the emotional responses that Americans give to individuals when in disagreeance to a command given, there would be too many riots, fights and even deaths, if this society were to be true. The dictatorship that existed in 1948 in this novel would have an extremely difficult time trying to put parameters on how an individual could act in a public and private setting. In this time most Americans have been taught to be themselves no matter what, therefore trying to reverse what years of implementing has accomplished, it would take millenniums to even scratch the surface of change. Because of all the history with civil rights and boycotts, Americans have served the right to stand up for what they think is right so trying to force them into submission would be nearly impossible. It is very interesting how this society lasted but than again it was a fictional novel. A dystopia is a made up world full of negativity and fear that intends to gain control over a large group of people. It fits well into stories and novels, but will never fit into a real life setting. There are too many stipulations in a dystopian society that would not agree with how Americans have learned to live their life. Freedom is the right that we have earned,

Tapp 3 therefore having a society such as this one would only contradict what it means to live free in a nation, under God, indivisible and with liberty and justice for all.
